Creamy Herb Dip

March 20, 2024

A good dip has the power to bring people together, and this creamy herb dip is no exception. Whether you’re hosting a casual get-together or just snacking solo, this easy-to-make dip is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

At the heart of this dip is a rich and tangy base made from sour cream and mayonnaise. It’s the perfect canvas for layering in bright, fresh flavors. Add a mix of finely chopped herbs like parsley, chives, and dill, and you’ll get a burst of freshness in every bite. Garlic and a squeeze of lemon juice round out the flavor profile, giving it just the right amount of zing.

What makes this dip so special is its versatility. Serve it with an array of crisp raw veggies like carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers, and cherry tomatoes for a healthy snack. It’s also a fantastic match for potato chips, pretzels, or pita bread. Want to upgrade your sandwiches or wraps? Spread a spoonful of this dip inside for an herby, creamy boost.

You can easily make this dip your own. Swap sour cream with Greek yogurt for a lighter version, or stir in a little hot sauce or Dijon mustard for a spicy twist. If you like a chunkier texture, fold in diced cucumbers or shredded carrots. The dip can also serve as a great topping for grilled meats, baked potatoes, or grain bowls.

The best part? It takes just 10 minutes to whip up, and it tastes even better after a short rest in the fridge. This gives the flavors a chance to meld and deepen, so it’s a great make-ahead option.

This creamy herb dip is a go-to recipe you’ll keep in your back pocket for every season. Fresh, flavorful, and endlessly adaptable, it’s the kind of simple pleasure that turns any moment into a delicious one.

I added extra garlic (like 2 cloves) and I think I messed it up lol. Still good but definitely sharper than I expected. Follow the recipe and you’ll be fine.

    1. User avatar abraham.smith7 says:

      4 stars
Honestly extra garlic can be so risky 😅 Glad it’s still tasty though—next time just do less and let it mellow in the fridge.

  3. User avatar camie.hoeger73 says:

    2 stars
meh. it could use more flavor or something. like maybe a lot more garlic.

  4. User avatar annett.ortiz1955 says:

    5 stars
Yummy! I served this with fresh veggies and everyone loved it! 👏

    1. 2 stars
I dunno, Greek yogurt and mayo together? Seems weird to me. But if it works for you, good for ya!

    2. User avatar Rob McKenna says:

      5 stars
Sounds delicious! I’ll definitely try it with veggies next time. Thanks for sharing! 😊

  5. User avatar Cammar Pilru says:

    3 stars
Mine came out a bit thin and not as “herby” as I expected. Maybe my garlic was too weak or I chopped the herbs too small?

  6. User avatar Na Powlowski says:

    3 stars
I used sour cream instead of yogurt because I don’t like Greek yuck. It was still good!

  7. User avatar pia.beahan says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have chives so I substituted with green onions and it turned out fine! Very fresh!

  8. User avatar ebony.gorczany says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I prefer my dips a bit spicier. Maybe add some cayenne next time?

  9. 3 stars
I followed everything exactly but forgot to chop chives super small and now I’m chewing herb chunks lol. Still tasty, just texture weird.

  10. User avatar isaac.upton says:

    5 stars
Made this for a weeknight veggie platter and it’s insanely good. The herbs taste super fresh and the garlic isn’t overpowering. I let it chill closer to 3 hours—big difference!

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! Chilling for longer really does make it taste more “herby” and less sharp—glad you noticed the garlic balance too. 🌿

  11. User avatar cheryll.morissette64 says:

    5 stars
This dip is absolutely delicious! So creamy and full of flavor. I served it at my party and everyone loved it!

  12. User avatar arlen.lynch88 says:

    4 stars
This dip is amazing for chips, but I’d warn people: it’s super garlicky. Could be perfect for some and too much for others.

  13. 4 stars
My kids actually ate veggies with this! Miracle dip!

  14. User avatar karyn.trantow13 says:

    3 stars
I forgot the dill, but it still tasted ok. Next time I’ll try not to mess it up!

    1. User avatar Magrathean sperm whale says:

      4 stars
Hey, don’t worry! Dill is nice, but the other herbs are great too. Glad it turned out good!

    2. 2 stars
Umm, how could you forget the dill? It’s kind of important for the flavor. Just sayin’.

  15. User avatar trula.hilpert16 says:

    5 stars
I was skeptical because I don’t usually mix yogurt + mayo, but wow. Creamy with a nice herby kick. Would totally serve at parties.

  16. User avatar Grìma Wormtongue says:

    2 stars
Didn’t taste much, I might try adding some spice next time. 🤔

  17. User avatar kristian.fahey1 says:

    5 stars
Made it for veggie night—big hit. The garlic amount feels spot on, not overpowering. I refrigerated overnight and it got even better.

  18. 5 stars
This dip is super creamy and delicious! My family loved it, thank you!

    1. User avatar genevieve.crooks says:

      2 stars
I think the mayo kind of makes it unhealthy tho? Too much fat, I guess.

    2. User avatar Carl Arm says:

      5 stars
So glad your family enjoyed it! It’s a crowd-pleaser for sure. 😊

  19. 4 stars
I thought this was gonna be bad, but it’s pretty good! 😄 Thank you!

  20. User avatar julianna.shanahan says:

    3 stars
I thought it would be more tangy with Greek yogurt but it was just.. okay. The flavors didn’t really pop for me.

    1. User avatar mack.roberts1979 says:

      4 stars
Have you tried letting it chill longer? Sometimes the flavors need more time to really mix! I loved it!

  21. User avatar barrie.leannon says:

    5 stars
This dip is awesome! So creamy and flavorful! Perfect for a party!

  22. User avatar ying.klein1981 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about the mayo + yogurt ratio. Turns out it works—texture is silky and not too tangy.

    1. User avatar The Allitnils says:

      5 stars
Same here! I thought it would be weirdly heavy, but the tang balances out nicely. Definitely making this again for crudités night.

    2. User avatar wilson.bogisich1964 says:

      3 stars
I tried it once and I think I used too much garlic—mine tasted kinda “sharp.” Still, the texture was good. How garlicky is yours supposed to be?

  23. User avatar Falmer Warmonger says:

    3 stars
Just ok, nothing special. Expected more flavor.

  24. User avatar livia.connelly25 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about using yogurt instead of sour cream, but it turned out great! Just as good, if not better!

  25. User avatar anya.gulgowski53 says:

    5 stars
This is my new go-to dip. Super creamy and flavorful even after only 30 minutes in the fridge—though 1 hour is better.

  26. User avatar amos.cronin says:

    2 stars
Why do you need mayo if it’s already Greek yogurt? I get it’s creamy but it feels unnecessary. I tried just yogurt once and it was thicker, not the same.

  27. User avatar Death Hound says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I found it tasted a bit bland until it sat longer. After the full hour (and honestly more like 2), flavors melded nicely.

    1. User avatar boris.raynor2 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—when I first made this it felt kinda flat too. Waiting longer really makes a difference. I usually do overnight if I’ve got time.

  28. 3 stars
Didn’t have chives, so I used scallions and it turned out good but not great. Still edible.

    1. 4 stars
Scallions are a great substitute! It happens to the best of us. Glad it still turned out edible!

  29. User avatar alphonse.jones72 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but mine turned out a little thick. I think my Greek yogurt was thicker than yours—next time I’ll add a spoon of milk to loosen it.

  30. 4 stars
The recipe sounds easy, but I don’t have fresh herbs. Can I use dried?

  31. User avatar lesley.torphy32 says:

    4 stars
So easy and it actually tastes like restaurant dip. I’m surprised at how quickly it comes together. Refrigeration is key though.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—1 hour in the fridge makes a big difference. We made it for a party and it vanished fast 😄

  32. User avatar lewis.ziemann says:

    3 stars
I don’t think dip needs mayonnaise. Why not just use more yogurt?

  33. User avatar Zaphod Beeblebrox says:

    2 stars
My grandma made a dip like this and I wanted to try, but it just tastes plain to me 🙁

    1. 4 stars
Maybe try adding some lemon juice or a bit more seasoning? That could help with the flavor!

  34. User avatar vanetta.okeefe85 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical of dips with that much raw garlic, but it worked. Flavor’s strong though—would recommend mincing super fine.

    1. 3 stars
I used a whole clove the first time and it was *too* garlicky for me. Next time I’ll use less or even roast it first. Still, the herbs with yogurt are really tasty—just go easy on the garlic.

    2. User avatar walton.leuschke71 says:

      5 stars
Same! I usually worry raw garlic will overpower everything, but I tried it once and yeah—strong, in a good way. Mincing super fine really helps it blend instead of biting.

  35. User avatar pilar.emard90 says:

    4 stars
I don’t like garlic, so used onion powder instead. Still turned out great!

  36. 5 stars
Absolutely loved this dip! It was a hit at my party. So creamy and flavorful! Will definitely make it again.

  37. 1 star
This is basically just a fancy name for ranch dressing. Why?

  38. User avatar jed.smith says:

    1 star
Yuck! I thought this was gonna be good but it tasted weird. Not trying again.

  39. User avatar Leandra Bauch says:

    4 stars
Tried it with chips and it was perfect. Next time I’ll serve it with cucumbers like my grandma used to do. Simple stuff wins.

  40. 5 stars
So easy to make! I used cream cheese instead of mayo, was really tasty!

  41. User avatar sandy.mcdermott says:

    5 stars
I added some cayenne pepper for a kick. Whooo! Spicy!

    1. 4 stars
Cayenne pepper? That’s bold! I usually stick to just garlic. But I bet it adds a good zing!

    2. User avatar jeanene.ledner80 says:

      2 stars
Why would you ruin a nice dip with cayenne? Seems too spicy for my taste. 🤷‍♂️

  42. User avatar dane.dare1950 says:

    5 stars
Really easy recipe! Made it for my kids and they loved it with the veggie sticks.

    1. User avatar jenice.davis78 says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad your kids loved it! We tried it with potato chips and it was a hit too.

    2. 2 stars
But isn’t Greek yogurt kinda sour? My kids wouldn’t eat that. 🤔

  43. User avatar steve_maga says:

    5 stars
Absolutely delicious! Perfect for our game night! Will make it again!

    1. User avatar Joe Parisian III says:

      3 stars
Game night? Isnt that a bit fancy for just dip? 🤔

    2. 5 stars
Glad you liked it! It’s a hit at my parties too!

  44. User avatar moses.spinka2010 says:

    2 stars
I made this for a party, but no one really liked it. It was kind of bland.

  45. 3 stars
hmmm tastes alright I guess, but I don’t know about this herb stuff.

    1. User avatar thomas.jerde says:

      3 stars
Herbs are good! But sorely overused in many dips. Maybe they should stick to simpler flavors

    2. 4 stars
I totally get you! The herbs can be a bit much if you’re not used to them. Maybe try it with less herb next time?

  46. 4 stars
So creamy! Perfect for chips, but I’d say too much garlic for my taste.

  47. User avatar cristen.koepp48 says:

    4 stars
Very easy to make, but I think it needs more garlic. Next time I’ll double it for sure!

    1. User avatar Shadout Mapes says:

      5 stars
I think garlic is awesome too! Can’t have enough of it in a dip, right? Enjoy your next batch! 😊

  48. User avatar Ford Prefect says:

    5 stars
Made this for a veggie platter and it totally disappeared. The garlic + fresh herbs combo is spot on, and it’s way lighter than most dips.

    1. 3 stars
I tried it and it was okay but I think the garlic was too strong? Also I only had dried herbs so maybe that’s why. The yogurt taste came through a lot for me.

    2. User avatar nanci.boyle63 says:

      5 stars
Totally get that “disappeared” feeling 😄 Made it for a veggie tray too—hits that fresh garlic/herb vibe but doesn’t feel heavy. Will be making this again.

  49. 5 stars
This is so creamy and the herbs really pop. I used dried dill because I was out, and it still tasted great—just not as bright. Will definitely make again for parties.

  50. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    2 stars
Really? This is just plain yogurt with herbs. Not impressed. I prefer a store-bought dip.

  51. 4 stars
This is pretty much my new go-to dip. I used dried dill because I didn’t have fresh and it was still tasty, just a little less bright. Next time I’ll grab fresh herbs.

  52. User avatar ermelinda.bauch42 says:

    5 stars
This is awesome! I used sour cream instead of yogurt and it was still amazing. Can’t wait to try it again!

    1. User avatar izetta.brakus says:

      3 stars
But isn’t yogurt key for creaminess? I don’t know how you made it taste amazing with sour cream.

    2. 5 stars
Sour cream is a great substitute! Glad it turned out well for you. Can’t wait to try it too!

  53. User avatar riley.considine says:

    2 stars
Meh, not impressed. My friend said it tasted like a mix between dish soap and blandness. Sorry!

  54. User avatar Arwen Evenstar says:

    5 stars
    Yum 😋

  55. User avatar Supreme Kai says:

    4 stars
Really easy recipe! I added some lemon juice for extra zesty, everyone liked it! Thanks for sharing!

    1. User avatar dewayne.hermiston41 says:

      5 stars
Sounds delicious! I love the idea of adding lemon juice. Can’t wait to try it out myself!

    2. User avatar gino.lebsack1976 says:

      2 stars
Really? I don’t think lemon juice goes well in a dip like this… but whatever floats your boat.

  56. 1 star
Ugh, I don’t like Greek yogurt. Is there an alternative? I should’ve read the ingredients better.

  57. User avatar odell.gutmann says:

    2 stars
This is okay I guess… but why so much dill 😅

  58. User avatar Falmer Nightprowler says:

    4 stars
Really good, but I added extra lemon juice because the yogurt flavor felt a tiny bit flat to me. Next time I might also use less mayo.

    1. User avatar Galaxia Woonbeam says:

      5 stars
Love that idea—lemon really wakes up yogurt dips. I’ve done the same when it tastes a little “meh.”

  59. User avatar tess.barrows says:

    2 stars
Bread crumbs? Sorry I mean I totally forgot the garlic in step 1 because I was making other stuff. It still tasted decent, but bland. Would do again with garlic.

    1. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      5 stars
Happens to the best of us 😅 Garlic really makes a huge difference in this dip—glad it still tasted decent!

  60. User avatar florrie.mclaughlin59 says:

    5 stars
Made this for a family BBQ and it disappeared within minutes!

    1. User avatar Mordekaiser says:

      5 stars
Wow, that sounds amazing! I need to try making this for my next gathering. How many servings does it make?

  61. User avatar Frank N. Beans says:

    5 stars
Made this for a party and it disappeared fast. Super creamy and the fresh herbs really come through—definitely doing it again.

  62. User avatar chuck.shields90 says:

    1 star
Why cover it? Isn’t that like trapping the flavors inside? Cuz dat seems wrong!

  63. User avatar deedra.muller42 says:

    4 stars
Yogurt instead of sour cream? I wasn’t feeling it at first, but it actually turned out nice!

  64. User avatar elliot.harber says:

    2 stars
I don’t know, it seems too simple. Where’s the fun in that?

  65. User avatar camila.koch1953 says:

    2 stars
Too many herbs for my taste. Can I make it without them? Just curious if it would still be good.

    1. User avatar ruben.gorczany25 says:

      4 stars
You could definitely make it without the herbs! It might lose that fresh taste, but it should still be creamy and good. Maybe add a little lemon juice instead?

  66. 3 stars
Not bad at all, but I found it a bit salty. Maybe my salt was bigger flakes? I’d cut salt to 1/4 tsp next time.

  67. 5 stars
Yumm! Made this for the game day, devoured it so fast! Recommend with pita chips!

  68. User avatar ervin.veum1966 says:

    5 stars
Yummy! But I added some jalapeños for a kick. 🔥 Worth a try!

    1. 5 stars
Jalapeños sound like a great addition! I’ll definitely try that next time. Thanks for the tip!

  69. User avatar Ima B. Leever says:

    5 stars
Made this for a party and it was gone in minutes! So good!

    1. 5 stars
Sounds fantastic! I always love finding new dip recipes for parties. Can’t wait to try it myself!

  70. User avatar leesa.gorczany says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have fresh herbs so I used dried parsley/dill and it was… not the same. Still tasted okay, just less vibrant.

    1. User avatar filiberto.hand says:

      3 stars
Hmm dried parsley/dill gives me weird vibes. I bet it tasted bland, but you said okay—maybe next time add a squeeze of lemon or extra garlic to perk it up.

    2. 4 stars
Totally get that—fresh herbs make it taste way more “alive.” Dried can work, but I usually use a lot less since it’s stronger, and it won’t hit as bright.
