If you’re a fan of classic upside-down cake and also happen to love chocolate, this chocolate banana upside down cake might just be your new go-to dessert. It’s nostalgic, rich, and comforting, with a twist. Instead of the usual pineapple topping, ripe bananas are caramelized in butter and brown sugar, then crowned with a soft, chocolatey cake that stays moist for days.
The magic starts with the base (which becomes the top once inverted): slices of ripe bananas nestled in a pool of melted butter and brown sugar. As the cake bakes, the bananas soften and the sugar caramelizes, creating a glossy, golden topping that’s both sweet and sticky. The contrast of the rich chocolate cake against the tender bananas is a perfect marriage of flavors—bittersweet meets tropical sweetness.
This cake is also a wonderful way to use up bananas that are just a bit too ripe for snacking but perfect for baking. The riper they are, the more flavor they’ll bring to the top layer. The batter comes together easily with pantry staples: cocoa powder, flour, eggs, butter, and a touch of vanilla. For an extra decadent version, try folding in chocolate chips or a handful of chopped walnuts.
When it’s time to flip the cake out of the pan, don’t stress. Just let it cool slightly, run a knife around the edges, and invert it confidently onto a serving plate. The aroma alone, warm banana caramel and deep cocoa, is worth the effort.
Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a dollop of whipped cream, or just as it is. It’s the kind of dessert that doesn’t need much dressing up to make an impression. Whether you’re baking for guests or just indulging yourself, this chocolate banana upside down cake is a sure crowd-pleaser.

I tried this but it came out super soggy. Not sure what I did wrong 😕.
This cake is amazing! So moist and the bananas are divine!
Yummy!!! Best cake ever! So good I ate half. 😋
I substituted almond milk for buttermilk, and it didn’t taste right. Stick to the recipe!
I don’t like bananas. Can I use apples instead? Just wondering.
Using apples sounds like a great idea! It’ll give it a different flavor but still be yummy. Let us know how it turns out!
Tastes like heaven! My family couldn’t get enough of it. Will definitely make again! 🍌🍫
LOL, upside down cake?? I just flipped it and made it right side up! 😂
Really easy to follow tho I messed up the caramel; it burnt! I’ll try again.
Nice cake!
Too many steps!! I’m just gonna buy a cake next time. 🙄
I understand! But the steps really make it worth it. This cake is so delicious! 😍
Too complicated!! Who has time for all that? I’ll just buy a cake from the store. 🙄
Yum yum! I added nuts to the mix! Next level, guys! 🤤
Yummy! But what is 350°F? I just used high heat, lol. It works too!
LOL, high heat works too? That’s kinda brave! I always follow the temp exactly, but glad it turned out yummy for you! 🌟
350°F is important! If you use high heat, the cake might burn or not cook good inside. Just sayin’.
I was skeptical about the bananas but wow! It’s delicious!
Wow. So good. So sweet. I want more! 🍌🍫
I totally agree! This cake is just the best. Can’t wait to bake it again!
Easy to make! I didn’t have buttermilk, so I used regular milk with a bit of vinegar instead. Still turned out great!
Can I use cirtrus fruits instead? Because I didn’t have bananas 😅
Heard bananas r bad for dogs? Idk, but maybe leave it out for them. Cake was alright tho.
This cake is absolutely delicious! The bananas caramelize perfectly. 5 stars!
I totally agree! This cake is to die for! The caramelized bananas add such a great flavor, I can’t wait to make it again!
Looks good, but why add butter twice? Seems like too much. I’m not sure about the flavor combo of chocolate and banana either.
Best cake ever, OMG!!! I Made it for my friend’s birthday and everyone loved!
Flop! My cake came out super dense. I think I messed up somewhere. Any tips for fluffier cake?
I followed the recipe but the cake turned out a bit dry. Maybe I overcooked it. Not sure I’ll try again.
Maybe try reducing the baking time next time? Sounds like a yummy recipe otherwise!
I think you probably did it wrong. I never have dry cake when I make this! 🤷♂️
Eh, I’m not so sure about the buttermilk part. Why not just use regular milk? Can anyone explain?
I think buttermilk adds a richer flavor and makes the cake super moist! Regular milk won’t do the same. Trust the recipe!
Nah, not for me. Too sweet and sticky. Not a big fan of banana either.
I get that! Bananas can be super polarizing. Have you tried it with other fruits instead? Maybe apples or berries would work better for you!
Bananas should be green for this right? I used ripe ones and it was too mushy.
I’m skeptical about the upside-down part—my bananas always turn mushy. Surprisingly these held up okay though. Taste was excellent, texture was decent.
Is 350 too high for baking? I usually do 300.
Yum! Can’t believe I’ve never tried upside down cake before! This is way better than I imagined.
Easy to make but mine collapsed. Is it supposed to do that? Help!
Chocolate and banana? Perfection! My family loved it. A big success at our dinner party.
Yum! This is a great cake for birthdays. Everyone loved it! 😍
