Okonomiyaki is a beloved Japanese comfort food that brings together a flavorful, savory pancake with endless possibilities for customization. Traditionally made with a base of flour, eggs, and shredded cabbage, Chicken and Mushroom Okonomiyaki adds a rich twist by incorporating tender chicken and earthy mushrooms for a hearty, satisfying meal that will leave you craving more.
The beauty of okonomiyaki lies in its versatility. In this version, thinly sliced chicken is sautéed until golden brown, then combined with mushrooms, which soak up the flavors of the savory batter. The mushrooms add an umami-rich depth to the dish, enhancing the chicken while keeping everything moist and tender. The batter is mixed with finely shredded cabbage, which gives the pancake a nice crunch and freshness, creating a satisfying contrast to the soft interior.
Once cooked, the okonomiyaki is topped with a drizzle of sweet and tangy okonomiyaki sauce, which ties all the flavors together and adds an irresistible depth of flavor. A sprinkle of bonito flakes and a dusting of chopped green onions finish off the dish, adding both flavor and visual appeal. For those who like a bit of heat, a dash of chili flakes or a drizzle of spicy mayo can elevate the dish further.
What makes Chicken and Mushroom Okonomiyaki especially appealing is its flexibility. You can easily swap out the chicken for another protein like shrimp or pork, or make it vegetarian by omitting the meat entirely. It’s also a great way to use up leftover vegetables or meat from the fridge.
This dish works perfectly as a main course for lunch or dinner, but it also makes a fun and interactive meal for gatherings, where everyone can enjoy customizing their pancakes with their favorite toppings. Chicken and Mushroom Okonomiyaki brings a delicious fusion of flavors that’s both comforting and exciting, offering a fresh take on a traditional Japanese favorite. Whether you’re new to okonomiyaki or a longtime fan, this recipe is sure to become a staple in your kitchen.

Yummy! First time trying okonomiyaki and I’m hooked! ❤️
Such a simple recipe! My kids loved it. Will make this for sure!
Yummm!!! This is legit! We had it for dinner and I couldn’t stop eating, lol.
Looks tasty!!! But can I use shrimp instead of chicken? Anyone tried that?
Okonomiwaki? Never heard of it but I like pancakes. This sounds different but who’s to say?
This is absolutely delicious! I never thought I could make okonomiyaki at home, but this recipe is so straightforward. The combination of flavors is spot on!
This sounds easy but I can’t trust that chicken cooks through that quick. What if it’s raw??
I’m glad you liked it! Okonomiyaki is one of my favorites. Did you try adding any extra toppings?
Simple and tasty. Can I use shrimp instead of chicken?
This recipe looks complicated. I don’t think I can do it. 🤔
Really delicious! I didn’t have bonito flakes, but it was still great.
This turned out amazing! I never thought I could make okonomiyaki at home. Thanks for sharing!
Pretty good, but the texture was off. Maybe add an egg next time? Not sure.
👌🏻
Looks delicious! Can’t wait to try this recipe! 🍴
Why no salt in the batter? I felt it was bland until I added extra soy sauce. Could be just me, but seasoning matters.
Super easy! I added some shrimp too, was delish!!
Yum! Shrimp sounds like a great addition. I gotta try that next time!
Shrimp? I thought this was chicken. That sounds a bit weird, but maybe it works.
Dunno what I did wrong, but mine burnt on the outside and raw on the inside.
Sounds like you might’ve cooked it on too high heat. Maybe try lower temp next time!
I followed the recipe and it came out perfect! Maybe you mixed up some steps?
Made this last night and it was a hit! The kids even liked it. Thanks for sharing!
Bonito flakes on top are the best part. I didn’t have aonori, but I used sesame seeds and it was still nice.
Totally agree—bonito flakes make it feel fancy even when it’s simple. Sesame seeds sounds like a great substitute! Did the flavor come out a little nuttier?
I was skeptical but it was really good! The sauce made it taste even better.
Okonomiyaki vibes! I used more cabbage than listed because… cabbage is life. Texture was nice and chewy. Bonito flakes on top made it feel legit.
Yes!! Cabbage IS life 😄 I love the chewy texture you mentioned—bonito flakes on top is the perfect “legit” touch. Did you use any aonori too?
Okay but… my batter was kinda thick? maybe my cabbage was extra wet. I added a splash more water and it fixed it. Still good though.
My kids loved it! They thought it was like a pizza pancake. Definitely making this again, but I might add some cheese next time.
Easy to make and my kids loved it! Will make again.
OK, so that sauce you mix is a game changer!!! Love it! Thanks for the recipe!
The idea of this recipe is nice, but it turned out a bit soggy for me. Maybe I added too much water? Not sure if I’ll try again.
Soggy can happen if you don’t get the water right. Maybe try less next time? I think it’s worth another shot!
Absolutely delicious! I made this for my family and they all loved it. Will be making it again for sure!
I tried this recipe but honestly, it doesn’t taste like the ones I had in Japan. Maybe I’m doing something wrong?
Tasted awesome! I added some shrimp too. So good!
Instructions were easy to follow. Will make again for sure!
I followed it and it came out kind of gummy in the middle. Maybe my cabbage was too wet? Next time I’ll squeeze it. Flavor was okay, just not the texture I wanted.
I didn’t have bonito flakes, so I skipped them. Still tasted good, but I feel like I missed out on something special.
