Apple-Sausage Hash

January 3, 2025

Apple-sausage hash is a comforting, flavorful dish that combines the savory goodness of sausage with the natural sweetness of apples, creating a perfect balance of flavors. Whether enjoyed for breakfast, brunch, or even dinner, this hash is a satisfying meal that’s easy to make and full of delicious textures. The caramelized apples bring a slight sweetness, while the sausage adds richness and depth, making each bite a delightful combination of savory, sweet, and slightly smoky.

To make apple-sausage hash, you begin by browning your choice of sausage, whether it’s mild or spicy, in a large skillet. The sausage is broken into crumbles as it cooks, releasing its savory flavor into the pan. Once the sausage is cooked through, it’s removed from the pan, and diced onions and garlic are sautéed in the leftover sausage fat, building a savory base for the hash.

Next, cubed potatoes — usually Yukon Gold or russet potatoes — are added to the skillet. These potatoes are pan-fried until golden and crispy on the outside, while remaining tender on the inside. The key to achieving the perfect crispy potato is letting them cook without stirring too much, allowing each piece to get a nice golden crust.

The star ingredient, apples, are sliced and added to the skillet towards the end of cooking. The apples caramelize slightly in the heat, enhancing their sweetness and providing a pleasant contrast to the savory flavors of the sausage and potatoes. A dash of cinnamon or a sprinkle of fresh thyme or rosemary can be added to give the dish a warm, aromatic note.

Once everything is combined and heated through, the apple-sausage hash is ready to serve. It’s delicious on its own but can also be topped with a fried egg for extra richness. You can also serve it with a side of toast or a fresh green salad for a complete meal.

Apple-sausage hash is a versatile dish that can be made in advance and reheated, making it perfect for meal prep or busy mornings. The combination of savory sausage, crispy potatoes, and sweet apples makes it an irresistible, hearty dish that’s sure to become a breakfast favorite.

I don’t know about mixing apples with sausage. Seems weird. But I tried it and wow, it’s tasty!

  2. User avatar Maggie and her father says:

    5 stars
This recipe was surprisingly good! The apples add a nice sweet touch. Will make again!

  3. 4 stars
I didn’t have thyme so I used rosemary and it still turned out great. Just make sure to cook the potatoes longer.

  4. 5 stars
    lol so good

  5. User avatar arthur.carter2006 says:

    2 stars
I’m skeptical about thyme + apples with sausage. It’s probably tasty, but it sounds like a weird flavor mashup.

  6. User avatar jacinto.kozey96 says:

    5 stars
Made it exactly as written and it came out hearty. I did cook the potatoes a tiny bit longer to get them more tender, but otherwise perfect.

    1. User avatar chase.corkery49 says:

      5 stars
Nice! I love that hearty combo—apples + sausage is such a good pairing. Cooking the potatoes a little longer makes total sense too.

  7. 3 stars
I think 1 lb sausage is too much for only 1 cup potatoes. It was a bit sausage-heavy for me, but the flavor is solid.

  8. 2 stars
Taste good, but my kids didn’t like it. They said it was weird mix of flavors.

  9. 4 stars
Followed the steps pretty much exactly. The potatoes got tender, onions were sweet, and it tasted hearty. Next time I might add a little garlic too.

  10. 3 stars
I think I might have used too much salt… 🤔

  11. 3 stars
Not gonna lie, I didn’t measure thyme and accidentally used a lot. Still edible, but it was kinda overpowering. The rest was decent though.

    1. 5 stars
Haha that happens! Thyme can go from subtle to “whoa” fast. Next time maybe start with half and add more at the end if it needs it. Glad it was still edible though—your flavor balance sounds pretty close.

  12. User avatar lizzie.beer says:

    2 stars
Tried it, but it didn’t taste right. Maybe I did sumthin wrong? 🙁

  13. User avatar sebastian.kulas65 says:

    5 stars
So good! the kids ate it ALL! yay!

  14. 5 stars
I used breakfast sausage and it still worked. The thyme flavor comes through nicely. Would definitely make again for weekend brunch.

    1. User avatar rufus.grady says:

      4 stars
Wait, thyme actually comes through? I usually go heavy on it and then it tastes kinda medicine-y lol. Did you use dried or fresh? Also how browned were the potatoes—crispy at all?

    2. User avatar Septimus says:

      5 stars
Good to know! I’ve been tempted to swap in breakfast sausage but wasn’t sure if it would overpower the thyme. Sounds like it balanced out nicely—adding this to my brunch list.

  15. User avatar kymberly.bins40 says:

Apple and sausage? Gross. Can’t believe people eat this.

  16. User avatar judie.kessler says:

    2 stars
The ingredient list says 2 pcs apples—mine were huge and I doubled everything else… it got kinda sweet. Still edible though. Lol.

  17. User avatar Su Shenlong says:

    4 stars
Tasty! But I added a little bit of garlic and it was bomb!

  18. 5 stars
This turned out way better than I expected—sweet apples with savory sausage is such a good combo. I added a pinch of smoked paprika and it was perfect.

  19. User avatar nicky.boyer70 says:

    4 stars
Pretty tasty and hearty. I think next time I’ll dice the potatoes a bit smaller so they cook through faster (mine were a little firm at 10 min).

  20. 4 stars
Easy to make! I added some cheese on top. Yum!

    1. 2 stars
I dunno… apples and sausage? Seems weird to me. Not sure if I like it.

    2. User avatar Stanford Hoeger says:

      5 stars
Cheese on top sounds amazing! I’ll have to try that next time.

  21. User avatar Yooden Vranx says:

    3 stars
I made this and it was kinda bland until I added more pepper and salt at the end. Thyme might be subtle depending on brand.

  22. User avatar mose.heaney says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I think it needed more seasoning. Little bland for my taste.

    1. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      5 stars
I agree! A little sprinkle of garlic powder would really kick it up a notch! 😋

  23. User avatar jesse.harber20 says:

    3 stars
Didn’t have thyme so I used basil and it was ok.

  24. User avatar Frost Giant says:

    2 stars
I dunno, sounds weird to put apples with sausage. Like, who does that?

  25. User avatar foster.boyer1988 says:

    5 stars
    Delicious!!

  26. User avatar leopoldo.schneider says:

    2 stars
meh. Sausage was fine but the whole thing needed more seasoning for me. Also apples released a lot of juice, so it got a little mushy.

  27. User avatar andres.pagac1989 says:

    5 stars
I added some garlic and it was bomb!! Thanks for the recipe!

  28. User avatar ian.bailey89 says:

    1. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

      5 stars
Wow, adding cinnamon sounds like a great idea! I’ll have to try that next time. 😋

    2. User avatar Spider Soldier says:

Not sure about apples with sausage. Seems weird to me. 🍏🍖

  31. User avatar salvador.harber69 says:

Loved the flavors, but the directions are a tiny bit vague—like potato size matters. I diced small and it cooked fast, which I liked.

  32. User avatar kristan.farrell1987 says:

    5 stars
Yummy! I added some garlic for extra flavor, came out great!

  33. User avatar Frankie and Benjy says:

    1. User avatar adelaide.pfeffer says:

Yum, I love this dish! The combination of flavors is just perfect!

  34. 5 stars
This was such a cozy combo—sweet apples with savory sausage is weirdly perfect. I added a little extra thyme and it smelled amazing.

  35. User avatar Thalassa says:

    3 stars
My potatoes took way longer than 10 minutes. I ended up adding a splash of water and covered it for a bit—then it worked.

  36. User avatar Denethor says:

    4 stars
Simple and tasty! It was a hit at dinner, even my kids loved it.

  37. User avatar estrella.ziemann says:

    3 stars
Easy recipe, but potatoes took too long to cook for me. Might try microwaving next time.

  38. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    4 stars
This was my first recipe I ever tried. I’m so proud of it turning out good! 😊

  39. User avatar mathWizard says:

    2 stars
Wasn’t a fan, the apples got too mushy for my taste. I think I prefer my sausage with just potatoes.

  40. User avatar latarsha.baumbach says:

    4 stars
Delicious! The thyme gave it a nice flavor. My family loved it!

  41. 3 stars
I ain’t ever tried apple and sausage together before. Idk about this one. But I guess it’s worth a shot??

    1. User avatar moriah.mraz says:

      5 stars
You should totally try it! The sweetness of the apples really balance out the savory sausage. Trust me, it’s a game changer!

  42. User avatar aldo.larkin says:

    5 stars
I’m skeptical about apple in savory stuff… but wow. The apples add this caramel-ish vibe and it’s not overly sweet.

  43. User avatar alejandro.trantow46 says:

    4 stars
Good idea with the apples, but mine was a little too salty—maybe because my sausage was already seasoned. Next time I’ll halve the salt.

    1. User avatar raphael.tremblay says:

      5 stars
Yep, that sounds exactly like it—seasoned sausage can basically “bring its own” salt. Halving the added salt next time is a smart fix. 👍

    2. 3 stars
Hmm. I don’t know if I’d cut it just because sausage is seasoned—maybe your potatoes were bigger? Like they soak up flavor different? Also I think 1 tsp salt is too much for a whole skillet but what do I know 🤷‍♀️

  44. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    5 stars
Followed the steps exactly and it turned out great. Thanks!

    1. User avatar basementDweller says:

      5 stars
Glad to hear it turned out great! I always love when a recipe comes together perfectly. Did you add anything extra?

    2. User avatar Tom Bombadil says:

      2 stars
Really? This was a mess for me. I think I burnt the sausage or something. Maybe I didn’t do it right.

  45. User avatar Anibal Abshire says:

    5 stars
This dish was amazing! The apples add a nice sweetness. Will make again!

  46. 4 stars
Not sure about the apples… I was skeptical, but honestly they add a nice sweet tang. Texture was great too.

  47. User avatar omar.lynch96 says:

    4 stars
Followed the steps pretty closely. The hash was tasty, but mine felt a little dry—next time I’ll cook the potatoes with a lid on part of the time.

    1. 5 stars
Good call on the lid—potatoes can definitely dry out if they’re cooking too open. I’ll try partially covering next time too. Did you dice them pretty small or more chunky?

  48. User avatar antione.kautzer58 says:

    1 star
Hash? Is that a food or just someone’s leftovers? 😂

    1. 5 stars
Haha, it’s definitely food! A mix of apples, sausage, and potatoes that makes a yummy dish. Give it a try! 😋

  49. User avatar troy.steuber says:

    4 stars
Easy to make and super filling! I made it for brunch and nobody could stop eating. Will definitely make again. Thanks!

  50. User avatar salvador.leannon65 says:

    5 stars
Yum!! 🍏🍽️ I used sweet potatoes instead and it was still delicious! Maybe a little too sweet, but very good overall.

  51. User avatar giuseppe.weissnat says:

    5 stars
I made this for breakfast and it was amazing! The apples add a sweet touch! 🍏

  52. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

    5 stars
This recipe is amazing! The sweetness of the apples with the sausage is a game changer. A family favorite now.

  53. User avatar Michael83 says:

    4 stars
I followed the recipe pretty closely, but my onion never felt fully translucent after 5 minutes (maybe my pan runs hot). Tasted awesome anyway!

    1. User avatar keven.weimann2000 says:

      4 stars
Mine never goes translucent either unless I add water or cover the pan 😅 5 minutes seems too short for onion chunks. But yeah, flavor-wise this hash sounds legit—apples + sausage is a weirdly good combo.

    2. 5 stars
Glad it still turned out awesome! Onions can definitely stall if the pan is hotter/colder than expected or if they got diced a bit bigger—5 minutes is kind of a “best case” timeframe. I usually give them closer to 7-8 and keep things moving.

  54. User avatar elise.kulas35 says:

    4 stars
I used green apples instead of red and it came out sharper—still good though. Would make again with maybe a sweeter apple.

  55. User avatar neville.brakus0 says:

    5 stars
Great weeknight meal. I topped it with a fried egg and it tasted restaurant-level. Will make again for sure.

  56. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

    5 stars
This turned out so good—sweet apples with savory sausage is a surprisingly perfect combo. I used fresh thyme and it smelled amazing while cooking.

  57. User avatar joshua.streich17 says:

    4 stars
Yummm!! Just the perfet balance of sweet and savory. Will make again!

  58. 3 stars
I tried this but I think cooking the apples too long just makes them mushy. Maybe just add them last?

  59. User avatar Leto II Atreides says:

    3 stars
It’s alright I guess. Not my kind of dish but whatever. I made it anyway.

  60. User avatar lucretia.ankunding says:

    4 stars
Pretty tasty, but my hash felt a bit dry—maybe because my skillet ran hot and I cooked the potatoes too long. A splash of water or more oil might help.

  61. User avatar mack.glover27 says:

    3 stars
Mine stuck a little to the pan. Probably my heat was too high, but the flavor was still good.

  62. User avatar Tierra Kozey says:

    4 stars
The instructions are clear, but I wish it said how dark to brown the potatoes. I cooked them longer than 10 min and that helped a lot.

  63. User avatar carlton.denesik24 says:

    5 stars
This sounds like the perfect comfort breakfast—sweet apple + savory sausage is a combo I didn’t know I needed. I’ll definitely try it with smoked sausage.

    1. User avatar yulanda.dietrich says:

      5 stars
Wow, that combo totally makes sense—sweet apples balancing the savory sausage. I like that it’s quick too. I’ll try smoked sausage like you said.

  64. User avatar queenie.kunde10 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about apples in savory food… but wow. It doesn’t taste like dessert at all. I actually liked the tang.

  65. User avatar arnita.hand59 says:

    4 stars
Hash is just a fancy word for mixed up food, haha. But this was good.

  66. 2 stars
Why would you put apples in a hash? That’s just weird. 🤔

  67. 5 stars
I substituted maple sausage, and WOW! This recipe just got better. Try it! 😋

    1. User avatar geraldo.beer says:

      5 stars
That sounds amazing! I love maple sausage! Can’t wait to try it myself.

    2. User avatar maragaret.yundt72 says:

      2 stars
Really? I don’t know about that, maple sausage seems a bit weird for a savory dish. 🤔

  68. User avatar lynn.macgyver says:

    4 stars
    Yum!

  69. 3 stars
The ingredient list says 2 tbsp olive oil, then it’s just “heat oil.” Wish it said if you’re supposed to cover the skillet or stir constantly, but I managed.

    1. 3 stars
Not gonna lie, it’s kinda annoying when recipes skip details like whether to cover it or how often to stir. I made this once and my hash stuck to the pan a lil. Tasted good though.

    2. 4 stars
Yeah, I ran into that too—“heat oil” is super vague 😅 But your process sounds like it worked out. I usually stir a bit more than “occasionally” just so the potatoes don’t stick as much.

  70. User avatar zola.russel says:

    4 stars
Easy steps, and the timing seems reasonable. I’d probably add a little extra pepper though because 1/2 tsp feels light for me.

  71. User avatar ned.robel1992 says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely but it tasted a little flat. Added more black pepper and a pinch of garlic and suddenly it was great.

    1. User avatar luciano.satterfield41 says:

      5 stars
Glad you figured it out! I’ve noticed black pepper really wakes this up—also thyme can be subtle depending on the brand. Next time I’d also try a tiny pinch of salt right at the end if it still feels flat.

  72. User avatar Dan Streetmentioner says:

    2 stars
Way too salty for me. I used 1 tsp like it says, but my sausage was already seasoned. Next time I’ll go half.

    1. User avatar clora.greenholt7 says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—sausage seasoning varies a lot. If yours was already salty, half the salt is a smart move.

  73. User avatar wellRespected says:

    3 stars
Can we talk about “2 pcs apples”? Like… are we talking medium? I used small ones and it was kinda apple-heavy. Flavor was still okay though.

  74. User avatar Lisbeth Maggio says:

    3 stars
dis is what my mom used to make but i never liked it. maybe u will tho.

  75. User avatar ahmad.paucek says:

    3 stars
My potatoes were mushy. Maybe I cooked them too long? Not sure if I’ll try again.

    1. User avatar chang.rath2003 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, mushy can happen if you cook them too long. Try cutting them a bit bigger next time or checking them earlier!

    2. 3 stars
I dunno, potatoes are tricky sometimes. Mine always come out fine! Maybe just try again with less time.

  76. 2 stars
I dunno about this combo. Sausage and apples? Seems off to me.

  77. 1 star
Why do you put apples in a hash? That’s just weird, not gonna lie.

  78. 3 stars
Not bad, but the thyme felt overpowering to me. Maybe my thyme was too strong or I measured wrong.

  79. User avatar felix.kemmer95 says:

    5 stars
This was sooo good! I never thought apples would go with sausage. My kids loved it!

    1. User avatar adalberto.bailey says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad you and your kids loved it! Apples and sausage is a genius combo. 🍏🍖

    2. User avatar graham.bergstrom85 says:

      2 stars
Really? Apples with sausage? I don’t know about that. Sounds kinda weird to me.

  80. User avatar glenda.jones80 says:

    1 star
This recipe is a waste of time. Took forever to prep! 😤

    1. User avatar georgia.grady78 says:

      4 stars
I get that it’s a bit of work, but the taste totally makes up for it! 😋

  81. User avatar stacy.sauer56 says:

    3 stars
Honestly the salt and pepper “to taste” is vague. I used more than I usually do and it turned out okay, but not gonna lie I was guessing.

    1. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, “to taste” can feel super vague. I usually start with half the salt/pepper the recipe says, then taste after the sausage is in—because salt really depends on how salty the sausage is.

  82. 3 stars
Not bad, but the potatoes didn’t really get soft for me at 10 minutes. Probably my pieces were bigger. Still tasted good.

    1. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      5 stars
Yeah, 10 minutes can be tight for potatoes depending on size. I usually go closer to 15-20 unless they’re super small dice. Next time try smaller cubes or cover the pan for a bit so they steam-soften.

    2. User avatar juanita.welch75 says:

      4 stars
Mine never gets soft in 10 min either 😅 I cut the potatoes kinda thick though. Maybe the pan was too dry? I added a splash of water last time and it helped a lot. Tasted good either way!

  83. User avatar brook.boyle26 says:

    5 stars
This tasted like something my grandma would make, in a good way. Simple, filling, and I didn’t need fancy stuff.

  84. User avatar Yooden Vranx says:

    3 stars
It’s okay. My boyfriend liked it, but I found it a bit too sweet.

    1. User avatar cockroach says:

      4 stars
I can see why you’d think it’s sweet! Maybe less apple next time? My whole family loved it though!

  85. User avatar moises.nitzsche82 says:

    4 stars
I made something similar but with just apples and onions. Adding potatoes + sausage makes it way more filling—nice idea!

    1. User avatar earlie.roob12 says:

      5 stars
Yes! Potatoes + sausage totally upgrades it—more comfort-food vibes. 🍳 Next time I’ll add a little garlic too.

  86. User avatar roger.schinner2009 says:

    4 stars
My onions never got translucent in 5 minutes because I was at too high heat. After lowering the burner it worked. Good recipe, just pay attention to your stove.

    1. User avatar hermine.steuber26 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—onions are picky. I always start medium and give them a little longer than 5 min if my pan runs hot. Nice save lowering the burner!

  87. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
Not bad! The thyme is key. I didn’t have fresh thyme so I used dried and it was fine—just go easy on it.

    1. User avatar zackary.cassin says:

      5 stars
Good to know! I’ve only used fresh thyme before, so I’ll go easy with dried next time.

  88. User avatar Android 20 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about apples + sausage, but wow. The apple sweetness really balances the savory. Will make again.

  89. User avatar beverly.gottlieb58 says:

    2 stars
I think the thyme is doing too much—tastes kinda medicinal to me. Would maybe use less or try rosemary instead.

    1. User avatar ollie.konopelski8 says:

      5 stars
Yeah I get that—thyme can come off kind of “medicinal” if you go heavy. I usually start with 1/2 tsp and only add more if I want it bolder.

  90. 5 stars
Five stars. Also super easy—weeknight dinner win. My whole family went back for seconds.

  91. User avatar jon.christiansen1996 says:

    3 stars
Not sure about cooking apples only 5 minutes—mine never soften fast enough unless I dice them super small. Still, smells good.

  92. User avatar niesha.hickle13 says:

    3 stars
I used breakfast sausage and it came out greasy. Still good, but I think using leaner sausage or draining would fix it.

    1. User avatar lita.heidenreich says:

      5 stars
That tracks—breakfast sausage usually has enough fat to make it pretty greasy. Next time I’d drain off some grease after you crumble it (or use a leaner sausage like you said). Still sounds tasty though!

  93. User avatar Ice Wraith says:

    5 stars
This is actually a super easy skillet meal. I added a fried egg on top and it leveled it up a lot.

    1. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I love when these hash recipes come together fast. The apples make it taste way more “restaurant” than it should 😄

Easy? Maybe for you haha. I cooked it and my potatoes were still kinda hard after 10 mins, so I had to add more time and a splash of water. Tasted good tho—just wish the instructions mentioned that.

meh… I guess it’s okay. The apples got mushy.

Super easy. I’m not a great cook and this was forgiving. Also my kitchen smelled amazing.

Yes! I love when a recipe is forgiving—this sounds like it would come out good even if I’m distracted. The smell probably takes it to another level.

Good idea but I wish the potatoes got more crispy. I cooked a bit longer and that helped a lot. Still tasted great.

Totally get that—hash needs that hot, dry-ish surface time. Next time try cranking the heat a bit and spreading the potatoes out (not crowding), and maybe let them sit undisturbed for 2–3 minutes before flipping. Glad cooking a bit longer helped though!

Apple in a hash? Honestly I was skeptical, but it surprised me. The apples break down just enough and it’s not sweet at all.

I was skeptical too, but that savory-sweet combo can work way better than I expected. The apples not getting too sweet is the key—this sounds like a solid weeknight hash.

My hash got brown fast before the potatoes were done. Medium heat my butt 😅 but when it finally cooked through it was tasty.

My potatoes were undercooked after 10 minutes. I ended up adding like 5-8 more minutes and a tiny splash of water. Still good!

This turned out way better than I expected—sweet apples with savory sausage is such a good combo. I used smoked sausage and it gave it tons of flavor.
