Yakitori-Style Chicken and Green Onion Wraps

August 9, 2023

If you love bold, savory flavors and are looking for a fun, delicious twist on a classic Japanese dish, Yakitori-Style Chicken and Green Onion Wraps are a must-try. Inspired by the popular yakitori skewers, these wraps bring the sweet and savory glaze of grilled chicken and green onions to a handheld, easy-to-eat meal. Packed with flavor and perfect for lunch, dinner, or a fun appetizer, they’re sure to become a new favorite.

The key to yakitori-style cooking is the savory-sweet marinade, typically made with soy sauce, mirin, and a touch of sugar. This glaze infuses the chicken with a rich umami flavor, while the caramelized edges add a delicious depth. When combined with green onions, which become tender and slightly charred when grilled, you get a perfect balance of smokiness, sweetness, and freshness.

What makes these wraps stand out is how they transform the traditional yakitori skewers into something even more portable and convenient. Instead of threading the chicken and green onions onto skewers, they’re wrapped up in a soft tortilla, creating a flavorful and satisfying handheld meal. The tortilla holds the filling together while adding a subtle warmth and texture that complements the savory filling.

These wraps are versatile and can be customized to suit your taste. You can add extra vegetables, like bell peppers, cucumbers, or even shredded carrots for added crunch and freshness. A drizzle of extra yakitori sauce or a sprinkle of sesame seeds can elevate the dish, adding extra flavor and visual appeal.

Yakitori-Style Chicken and Green Onion Wraps are the perfect blend of tradition and innovation. They bring the familiar flavors of yakitori in a new, easy-to-enjoy format that’s ideal for busy days or casual gatherings. Whether you’re craving something savory, sweet, or simply want to try something different, these wraps are sure to impress with their irresistible combination of flavors.

Just okay. The chicken was a bit dry, maybe I cooked it too long?

    1. User avatar Draugr Death Overlord says:

      4 stars
That can definitely happen! Make sure to keep an eye on the chicken while grilling. Next time, try pulling it off the heat a little earlier.

This is awesome! I love Yakitori! The marinade is so tasty!

    1. 3 stars
Looks good but I think Yakitori should be grilled on actual skewers, not wrapped. Just saying!

    2. User avatar Loonquawl and Phouchg says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! The marinade makes all the difference. What’s your favorite part of the recipe?

  11. User avatar chester.towne says:

Can I replace the chicken with tofu? I don’t eat meat.

    1. User avatar khadijah.schamberger2025 says:

      3 stars
Tofu?? I dunno, man. Chicken’s kinda the main thing here. Won’t it taste different? But whatever, give it a shot.

    2. User avatar anabel.mayert2007 says:

      5 stars
Sure, tofu should work fine! Just make sure to press it to get excess water out, then marinate like the chicken.

  12. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! The marinade is so flavorful, my family loved it!

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! The marinade really takes it to another level. I’ve made it twice already!

    2. User avatar cyrstal.cormier says:

      3 stars
Really? I found it a bit bland. Maybe I should’ve added more spices or something.

  13. User avatar anisha.bauch35 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is amazing! The flavors are spot on, and it’s super easy to make. My family loved it! 🍽️

  14. User avatar Lunkwill and Fook says:

I tried this but used honey instead of sugar and it was way too sweet. Maybe adjust that for next time?

    1. 5 stars
Thanks for sharing! I always find honey too sweet in recipes too. I think your idea to adjust sugar is a great tip.

  15. User avatar dylan.boyle2012 says:

    2 stars
Just okay. Chicken was dry. Maybe I grilled it too long?? Idk.

  16. 2 stars
Why do we need mirin? Can I leave it out? I’m on a budget and can’t find it anywhere.

    1. User avatar fredric.nicolas says:

      4 stars
You can totally leave out the mirin! Just add a little extra sugar to keep it sweet, or maybe try using some apple juice instead? It should work fine!

    2. User avatar andreas.hagenes says:

      2 stars
You need mirin to give it that authentic flavor. If you skip it, it won’t taste the same! Just find another way to affrod it, maybe buy in bulk? It’s worth it.

  17. User avatar Ilban Richese says:

    4 stars
Quick and easy but wasn’t enough for the whole family. You might need more than just 4 chicken breasts. 🐔

  18. 3 stars
Not sure about the tortillas—lettuce wraps sounded cooler. I love chicken and onions, but the sweetness from the sugar + mirin was stronger than I expected.

    1. 4 stars
Hmm I made it once and mine was kinda sweet too, but I think it’s because my mirin was more “sweet” than usual. Next time I’ll use less sugar and maybe add a splash more sake to balance.

    2. User avatar verlene.okuneva65 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, I get that. I swapped a bit of the sugar for more soy and it toned down the sweetness a lot. Lettuce wraps also sound way better for this vibe.

  19. 4 stars
I had no chicken, so used tofu instead, turned out decent!

    1. 4 stars
Tofu is a great substitute! I never thought of that, maybe I’ll try it next time.

    2. 2 stars
Ugh, tofu instead of chicken? That’s totally not the same! Stick to the recipe, please.

  20. 5 stars
This is such a fun weeknight twist on yakitori—sweet-salty marinade is spot on. I used lettuce wraps and they were super fresh.

  21. User avatar walter.lueilwitz91 says:

    2 stars
Ehh, I don’t know. My kids wouldn’t even try it. Maybe if I took out the green onions? 🤷‍♀️

  22. User avatar rodrigo.mccullough41 says:

    2 stars
Made this last night, but forgot to baste it. Tasted dry… my bad!

  23. User avatar kelley.medhurst87 says:

    5 stars
Yum! Best wrap ever! Will make again for sure!!!

  24. 3 stars
Quick question: step 4 says remove chicken from marinade but basting with reserved marinade—did you boil it? I’m always worried about raw chicken contamination.

  25. User avatar bernard.balistreri58 says:

    4 stars
Not bad, but 3–4 minutes per side might be short depending on your pan and strip thickness. Mine needed a couple extra minutes.

  26. User avatar Samwise Gamgee says:

    4 stars
I’m a skeptic about the tortillas part, but honestly it was good. Next time I’ll use lettuce wraps for a lighter vibe.

  27. 1 star
Too many ingredients! I just want chicken and green onions. No need for fancy soy sauces!

    1. User avatar gilma.crist1997 says:

      4 stars
You can simplify it, just skip the sauces! Just cook the chicken and green onions. It’s really good with just a pinch of salt too!

  28. User avatar Will Dach says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have mirin, so I used a little extra sake + honey. Not exactly the same, but still tasted sweet-salty and worked on the grill.

  29. User avatar alberto.morar49 says:

    5 stars
Yum! I substituted the chicken for tofu and it worked great! Perfect for my vegetarian friends.

    1. User avatar troy.jacobson84 says:

      4 stars
Tofu instead of chicken? That’s interesting! I wouldn’t have thought it would taste good in this recipe, but I’m glad it worked for you!

  30. User avatar lavinia.hayes2021 says:

    5 stars
Oh man, best dinner ever! I paired it with some rice, heaven!

  31. User avatar toney.adams says:

    2 stars
Not sure about this one. Chicken and green onions? Sounds weird. 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar Hillman Hunter says:

      4 stars
Weird combo? Not really! It’s called yakitori for a reason! Just because you don’t see chicken with green onions at every restaurant doesn’t mean it won’t taste good. Just try it!

    2. User avatar rigoberto.corkery68 says:

      5 stars
I totally get it, but trust me, the marinade makes it delicious! Give it a try. 👍

  32. 3 stars
I wasn’t sure about the sake. Can I just use more soy sauce instead? Wouldn’t that be better?

  33. User avatar syreeta.wiza70 says:

    2 stars
Too much soy sauce, it was way too salty for our taste. I won’t make this again.

    1. User avatar Super Saiyan Gohan says:

      4 stars
I totally get that! Soy sauce can really overpower if you’re not careful. Maybe try less next time? More sugar can help balance it too! Just a thought.

  34. User avatar lucky777 says:

    1 star
I don’t have sake. Can I just put more soy sauce? Gonna try it.

    1. 4 stars
Sure, more soy sauce should work! Just make sure to balance the saltiness. Hope it turns out yummy!

  35. User avatar sheldon.yost says:

    5 stars
Yum! These are like a taste explosion! Everyone loved them at the BBQ last night.

  36. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! The chicken was super flavorful. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar myles.olson says:

      5 stars
I tried this recipe too and it turned out great! The marinade really makes a difference. 👍

  37. 3 stars
This was okay. The sauce was a little too sugary for my taste, but I guess it’s supposed to be. Would try less sugar next time.

  38. User avatar grover.lowe says:

    2 stars
Ugh, I couldn’t find mirin so I used apple juice 😬. Didn’t turn out great.

  39. User avatar Omar Ritchie says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! But I had to use brunch wraps instead of tortillas, and it still worked out! Thx for sharing!

    1. 3 stars
Brunch wraps? Really? That doesn’t seem right, but if it taste ok, who cares?

    2. User avatar arletta.jerde78 says:

      5 stars
Using brunch wraps sounds creative! Glad it worked for you. Gonna try that next time!

  40. User avatar The Allitnils says:

    4 stars
Very delicious but I couldn’t find mirin, so I skipped it. Still tasted good!

  41. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have mirin so I used rice vinegar + a tiny bit more sugar (kinda cheating, I know). It was still tasty, just a bit tangier than expected.

    1. User avatar Wonko the Sane says:

      3 stars
Wait… mirin is sweet rice wine, right? So vinegar makes it tangier—did it turn out kinda sour or just balanced? Thinking of trying it but worried it’ll be too sharp.

    2. 5 stars
Honestly rice vinegar + extra sugar doesn’t sound too “cheaty” — mirin is mostly sweetness + mild tang. Glad it still tasted good!

  42. User avatar celina.sawayn74 says:

    2 stars
Gotta be honest… seems a bit too much sugar for chicken. And why do we need both sake and mirin? I might scale the sugar down next time.

  43. User avatar otha.schowalter1951 says:

    2 stars
I don’t have sake or mirin so I used white wine vinegar and honey… not the same vibe. Still ate it, but it was kinda sour and weirdly sticky.

    1. 3 stars
I do this sometimes: use a splash of vinegar but add more sugar to balance. Maybe also simmer it a bit so it’s less sharp? Your “sticky” makes sense—honey caramelizes faster.

    2. User avatar marilu.douglas says:

      4 stars
Oh wow, I feel that—sake + mirin are such a specific sweet/softening combo. Vinegar + honey can definitely swing sour. Still though, at least you didn’t waste it 😄

  44. 3 stars
Pretty good but I kinda botched it—I forgot to reserve marinade for basting and just used the leftover sauce. Still tasty though.

  45. 2 stars
I tried these but I don’t understand why they call it yakitori if it’s wrapped. Is it supposed to be on rice? Anyone? 🤔

  46. User avatar Snow Bear says:

    5 stars
My kids are picky eaters, but they gobbled these up! Will make again!

    1. 5 stars
That’s awesome! It’s always great when kids actually like what we cook. What did you serve with it?

  47. 2 stars
Meh. Mine stuck to the grill even with oil, and the wraps were kinda messy. Flavor was okay but not wow.

    1. User avatar trinidad.carroll23 says:

      2 stars
Totally agree—mine stuck too. I oiled the grill and it still clung like crazy. Flavor was decent, but the wraps were a mess to roll. 😕

    2. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      5 stars
Hmm, I made this and it was “wow” for me! I think the key was letting the chicken drain a bit before grilling so it wasn’t too wet with marinade. Also used a hot grill and didn’t touch it for the first minute or two.

  48. User avatar johanne.beahan74 says:

    5 stars
These wraps were a total hit—sweet-salty chicken with the green onion made everything taste “real” yakitori. I used tortillas and it worked way better than I expected.

  49. 2 stars
Ok but like… could you really call it yakitori if it’s inside a wrap? Lol. Tastes good anyway.

  50. 3 stars
I found this a bit bland. Maybe I need to marinate longer? Not bad but not great either.

  51. User avatar Slartibartfast says:

    5 stars
Absolutely delicious! My family loved it! Will make again for sure.

  52. User avatar inger.stoltenberg33 says:

    3 stars
The ingredients are straightforward and it came together fast. Only thing is I kept the chicken on skewers without soaking them and the onions kinda charred.

  53. 2 stars
This looks complicated. Who has time for all these steps? I’ll just order takeout.

  54. 2 stars
I’m sorry but tortillas? Lettuce wraps I get, but tortillas felt kinda off. It wasn’t bad, just not my thing. Maybe pita would be better.

  55. 3 stars
Not bad, but I think I overcooked the chicken. It got a bit dry. Next time, I’ll watch the time more closely.

    1. User avatar danille.schmidt70 says:

      4 stars
Dry chicken happens! I usually put a timer on my phone to avoid this. But glad you still enjoyed the flavors! 😊

  56. User avatar hung.ruecker21 says:

    3 stars
I tried this but it was a bit salty for my taste. Maybe less soy sauce next time?

  57. User avatar ebonie.franecki says:

    5 stars
Made these last night—so flavorful. The marinade on the grill really tastes legit, and the green onions add that perfect bite. I used lettuce wraps and they were a hit.

    1. User avatar brent.prosacco50 says:

      3 stars
Not sure I follow on the lettuce vs tortillas—wouldn’t lettuce get soggy when you baste with the marinade? I might try but I’d probably pat the chicken dry first.

    2. User avatar wellRespected says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Lettuce wraps are the move—love how the green onions keep it fresh. Glad the marinade tasted legit on the grill too.

  58. User avatar kristal.witting91 says:

    4 stars
Pretty straightforward, but my chicken strips were too thick so they needed longer than 3-4 min per side. Still tasty and the green onion flavor came through.

  59. User avatar zelma.homenick1953 says:

    5 stars
Absolutely delicious! Grilled the chicken just right, and my kids keep asking for more! Definitely a keeper!

    1. 5 stars
So glad your kids loved it! I made it too and my family enjoyed it! Definitely a tasty dish!

  60. User avatar gianna.larkin59 says:

    4 stars
The recipe says to remove the chicken and reserve marinade—smart. Just make sure you don’t use it without basting carefully. Tastes very yakitori-ish.
