Valentine’s Day Kir Royale

January 29, 2024

The Kir Royale is a sophisticated cocktail that combines the sparkle of champagne with the rich, fruity sweetness of blackcurrant liqueur. Light, refreshing, and beautifully simple, it’s an ideal drink for special occasions, whether you’re celebrating a milestone or just enjoying a little indulgence.

The origins of the Kir Royale date back to France, where it was first created as an elegant variation of the classic Kir cocktail, which traditionally uses white wine and crème de cassis (blackcurrant liqueur). By swapping in champagne or sparkling wine, the Kir Royale adds a touch of festivity, making it the perfect choice for toasting. It’s often seen at weddings, brunches, and New Year’s Eve celebrations, but there’s no need to wait for a special occasion to enjoy one, its crisp, fruity profile makes it ideal for any moment that calls for a little sparkle.

Making a Kir Royale is incredibly easy. Start by filling a champagne flute about three-quarters full with chilled champagne or sparkling wine. A dry or brut sparkling wine works best, as the blackcurrant liqueur already brings sweetness to the drink. Then, add just a splash of crème de cassis, the blackcurrant liqueur, and stir gently. You want the liqueur to infuse the champagne without overpowering the delicate bubbles.

For a garnish, you can drop in a fresh raspberry, blackberry, or even a twist of lemon peel for an extra touch of color and elegance. The resulting drink is a beautiful blend of effervescent champagne with the deep, fruity flavor of blackcurrant, creating a light yet complex taste that’s perfect for sipping.

The Kir Royale is all about enjoying the moment, light, refreshing, and a little bit fancy. Whether you’re celebrating with friends or simply treating yourself, it’s a cocktail that’s guaranteed to add a touch of glamour to any occasion.

A romantic and elegant cocktail perfect for Valentine’s Day.

So festive and simple! The crème de cassis + bubbles combo feels super romantic for Valentine’s. I’ll definitely try it with extra raspberries on top.

Meh, didn’t really taste like anything special. Just sparkling wine with some syrup… not impressed.

  3. User avatar Vroomfondel says:

    5 stars
So simple but fancy—this is definitely going on my Valentine’s list. The cassis + bubbles combo is perfect, and the raspberries make it look restaurant-level.

Isn’t crème de cassis like a fancy jam? What even is it? I might just use grape juice instead!

  5. 3 stars
Not a big fan of champagne, but the raspberries made it tasty. Might try again.

    1. User avatar harmony.kuphal says:

      4 stars
Glad you enjoyed the raspberries! They really add a nice touch. Maybe try a different sparkling wine next time?

Champagne ain’t for everyone. But you should try using other fruits too, like strawberries, if you don’t like bubbly!

  6. User avatar verona.marquardt8 says:

Okay but is it supposed to be pink? Mine came out super dark like… grape juice. Still drank it lol.

    1. User avatar alita.heller says:

      5 stars
Mine looked pretty pink too—if yours went super dark, it might’ve been a stronger crème de cassis (or you used a heavier pour). Still, that stuff is basically grape juice anyway 😅 Glad you drank it!

  7. User avatar junior.lemke1974 says:

    3 stars
Kir Royale? Sounds fancy! But honestly, I’m more of a beer person.

It’s not just champagne tho! That crème de cassis gives it a totally different taste. You should try making it again, you might like it! 😉

    2. 3 stars
I get what you mean, it kinda seems underwhelming for such a fancy name! Maybe just stick to rosé? 🍷

I don’t really get why people love bubbly drinks. This was okay, but not my thing.

Could I use blackcurrant syrup instead of crème de cassis? I don’t have the proper bottle. Also, do you stir it or just layer?

  27. 4 stars
Easy peasy, just like it said! But why champagne? Can’t I use soda? Thx!

    1. User avatar Tracey Marvin says:

      4 stars
You can definitely use soda! It won’t be the same, but it can still be tasty!

    2. User avatar Ford Prefect says:

      5 stars
I think champagne is way better than soda for this recipe. It’s like, a special drink!

  28. User avatar guinea pig says:

Wow this is easy! Can I use soda instead of champagne? Asking for a friend!

    1. 4 stars
You can try soda, but it won’t taste the same. Champagne gives it that fancy feel! 🍾

  30. User avatar charlyn.kessler26 says:

Crème de cassis is kinda expensive where I live. If I can find it on sale I’d make this again—otherwise it’s a one-time treat.

  34. User avatar gay.rosenbaum1968 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why people make such a big deal over cocktails. Just drink beer, it’s simpler.

    1. User avatar Feral Falmer says:

      5 stars
Cocktails are fun! Kir Royale is so pretty and delicious. Beer is cool, but sometimes you gotta treat yourself! 🥂

    2. User avatar chong.gottlieb says:

      2 stars
Why bother with all that? A beer’s a beer. Sounds like a lot of effort for something fancy.

  35. User avatar Vroomfondel says:

    3 stars
I tried this and it was just ok. The crème de cassis was too sweet for me.

  36. User avatar Blue Dartwing says:

    3 stars
Tasted yummy but kinda hard to find crème de cassis where I live!

  37. User avatar tyler.bailey says:

    5 stars
Quick and easy, thumbs up! 👍

  38. User avatar williams.larkin1973 says:

    5 stars
I tried this and it was way better than I expected. Not too sweet, nice color, and the raspberries made it look like a restaurant drink.

  39. User avatar Frankie and Benjy says:

    3 stars
Why do people make these kinds of drinks? Just give me a beer! 😂

    1. User avatar clarisa.johnston1998 says:

      5 stars
Because sometimes you wanna feel fancy! This drink is great for special occasions. 🍾❤️

    2. User avatar earline.grant43 says:

      2 stars
I dunno, sounds kinda pretentious. Just pour me a cold one, please. 😂

  40. User avatar jules.powlowski80 says:

    1 star
Why does the sparkly drink need berries? Seems pointless.

    1. User avatar dahlia.lang says:

      5 stars
The berries add a nice touch of flavor and color! It’s all about the presentation for special occasions like Valentine’s Day.

  41. User avatar audria.lockman8 says:

    2. User avatar jose.hayes84 says:

      3 stars
I dunno, it sounds a bit simple. I was expectin’ more ingredients for a fancy drink. Does it really taste that good?

  43. User avatar jodi.hills67 says:

    3 stars
I tried making this but it turned out too sweet. Maybe I used too much crème de cassis? 🤔

    1. 4 stars
Yeah, that can happen! Maybe try less crème de cassis next time. It’s really sweet stuff!

    2. 3 stars
I dunno, I think that’s how it’s supposed to taste? But I don’t really like sweet drinks anyway.

  44. 2 stars
Bland. I mean, it’s not gross, but for $ I expected more. Also, the raspberries kinda sank? Idk maybe my glasses were too full.

  45. User avatar sharika.bechtelar78 says:

    5 stars
Easy and classy! I’ll impress my date with this. 🥂

I dunno, I don’t like raspberries, can I leave them out?

    1. 5 stars
Sure, you can totally leave out the raspberries! Just don’t forget, the drink’ll look a bit plain without them. But hey, it’s your drink! Enjoy! 🍾

  51. User avatar Margot Fenring says:

    4 stars
Honestly, I’m skeptical this needs more than “pour and garnish.” But I did it anyway and it tasted pretty balanced. Would make again for a party.

    1. User avatar Ted Mayert PhD says:

      5 stars
Totally get your skepticism—“pour and garnish” sounds too simple 😂 But I’ve made it a few times and it really does come out balanced. Great for parties because you can prep fast and it looks fancy.

  52. User avatar Shiela Nicolas says:

    5 stars
This was a hit at our Valentine’s dinner! So elegant and delicious! ❤️

  53. User avatar marisha.dickens says:

    2 stars
1 oz crème de cassis?! That’s a lot compared to what I expected. Next time I’ll measure again because I may have eyeballed it.

  54. User avatar vita.ruecker says:

    3 stars
Not bad but can someone explain what crème de cassis is? Sounds weird.

  55. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    3 stars
Can you substitute the champagne with soda? I’m not a fan of alcohol.

  56. User avatar misty.stokes31 says:

    4 stars
Would it be okay to use blackberries instead of raspberries? I had those on hand and it still tasted great.

  57. User avatar carroll.anderson says:

    5 stars
I love this drink! Made it for my girlfriend and she was so happy! 😊

  58. User avatar clemencia.keebler88 says:

I used sparkling water instead of champagne and it was still good! 😄

  59. 3 stars
Why raspberries? What if someone likes strawberries better? You should say that too.

  60. User avatar mauricio.willms30 says:

    5 stars
OMG this was delish! I drank too many though, lol. 💖

  62. User avatar Kasey Predovic says:

    4 stars
One ounce? Seems tiny. lol Still tasted good tho. ❤️

  63. 3 stars
How much champagne do you really need? I thought it was too much! Just saying.

  64. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

    4 stars
Um, so does it have to be champagne? Could soda or something work too? 🤔

  65. 2 stars
Crème de cassis is too sweet for me, might try it without. 😒

  66. 3 stars
I used “champagne” from a cheap bottle and it tasted kinda flat. If you use a good sparkling wine, I bet it’s way better.

    1. 5 stars
Yeah, I’ve noticed that too—cheap sparkling wine can taste a bit flat or too sweet. A better bottle really makes a difference in the bubbles and finish.

  67. User avatar matt.cruickshank says:

    5 stars
I made this for my girls’ night, and everyone loved it! Way to go!

Isn’t crème de cassis the stuff that made me sick at a party once? Not trying this one… 🤢

    1. User avatar Spriggan Matron says:

      4 stars
I totally get it! Crème de cassis can be a bit much for some. Don’t let one bad experience ruin your Valentine’s Day though! 🥂

  69. User avatar nickolas.aufderhar46 says:

    3 stars
Who drinks wine with raspberries? Why not strawberries? 🤔

    1. User avatar cinda.orn54 says:

      4 stars
I think raspberries just add a unique tartness that strawberries can’t match! Plus, they look prettier! 😊❤️

  70. 2 stars
I dunno, it was too sweet for me. I like my drinks stronger. 😒

  71. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

    2 stars
I tried it with soda instead of champagne and it was terrible! Stick to the recipe.

  72. User avatar arielle.schulist says:

    4 stars
Kir Royale? Sounds fancy! I just call it berry fizz.

  73. User avatar Sau Bernhard says:

    3 stars
Cassis is hard to find around here. Is there a substitute? 🤔

  74. User avatar samatha.torp says:

    5 stars
So simple but feels fancy—perfect for Valentine’s. The crème de cassis gives it that lovely berry depth. I used prosecco and it still worked great!

  75. User avatar julius.treutel says:

    5 stars
Did this for a date night and everyone thought I worked harder than I did 😂 Tastes sweet and pretty balanced for how easy it is.

    1. 5 stars
That’s exactly the vibe I’m after—easy but looks fancy 😄 Sweet and balanced sounds perfect for date night. I’m stealing this!

  76. 4 stars
Does anyone know if I can use regular wine instead of sparkling? Not everyone likes bubbles.

  77. User avatar Grunthos the Flatulent says:

    3 stars
Not bad! I had to improvise because I couldn’t find crème de cassis—ended up using blackcurrant syrup and it worked… kinda. Would probably be even better with the real stuff.

    1. User avatar phillip.wolff says:

      3 stars
Crème de cassis is like… the whole point, though. Blackcurrant syrup might be close but it’s not the same flavor profile. If you like it then sure, but I’d say get the real stuff for Valentine’s.

    2. 5 stars
Oh nice—blackcurrant syrup makes total sense. “Worked… kinda” is exactly how I feel about most kitchen experiments too 😄 Next time try a touch less syrup so it doesn’t get too sweet, and you’ll be golden!

  78. User avatar sebastian.wilkinson1998 says:

    5 stars
Super impressed with how pretty it looks! Will definitely serve this at my next party. 💕

  79. User avatar alisa.ryan62 says:

I prefer whiskey, but tried this for my wife. She loved it, so I guess that’s a win! 🙂
