Tomato Soup

August 15, 2024

There’s something timeless about a warm bowl of tomato soup. It’s one of those dishes that instantly brings a sense of comfort and nostalgia, reminding us of cozy afternoons or family dinners. Simple yet satisfying, tomato soup has a way of warming you up from the inside out, making it the perfect meal for chilly days or when you just need a little pick-me-up.

The beauty of tomato soup lies in its simplicity. With just a few basic ingredients, ripe tomatoes, garlic, onions, and a little bit of seasoning, you can create a velvety, rich soup that’s bursting with flavor. The natural sweetness of the tomatoes pairs beautifully with the savory depth of garlic and onion, while a touch of cream or milk adds a comforting creaminess that elevates the entire dish.

What makes tomato soup so great is how versatile it is. You can enjoy it as a light lunch on its own, or pair it with a grilled cheese sandwich for the ultimate comfort food duo. Add a sprinkle of fresh basil or a drizzle of olive oil for a burst of freshness, or make it heartier by tossing in some croutons or roasted vegetables.

Tomato soup is also incredibly easy to make. Whether you’re using fresh or canned tomatoes, the process is straightforward. Sauté the onions and garlic, blend in the tomatoes, season to taste, and let everything simmer until the flavors meld together. For a smoother consistency, you can blend the soup until it’s silky and smooth, or leave it a bit chunky if you prefer more texture.

This dish is not just about nostalgia, it’s also a great way to enjoy the health benefits of tomatoes, which are packed with vitamins and antioxidants. Tomato soup can be easily adapted to suit different dietary preferences, whether you want it dairy-free, gluten-free, or with extra herbs and spices to suit your taste.

Tomato soup is truly a classic that never goes out of style. Whether you’re looking to nourish your body or simply enjoy something warm and comforting, a bowl of homemade tomato soup is always the answer.

Made this last night—so cozy. I used fresh basil and a little extra pepper. The blending step is key; super smooth.

This was good, but my soup turned out a bit too acidic even with the sugar. Next time I’ll use less broth or add a pinch more sugar gradually.

It was ok, but I thought there was too much garlic. I prefer a more mild flavor.

    1. 4 stars
I totally get what you mean! Garlic can be overpowering sometimes. Maybe try using just one clove next time?

My immersion blender splashed everywhere lol. Tasted good after, but next time I’ll blend in batches like the instructions say.

The instructions are clear but “to taste” salt/pepper is always a little annoying lol. I over-seasoned at first, then fixed it with more broth. Still a solid soup.

Heavy cream optional is true—i tried it without and it was kinda acidic? The sugar fixed it, but next time I’ll add cream for sure.

Hmm I tried this once and it was also kinda acidic… but I didn’t add enough sugar, I think. Next time I’ll try the cream like you said. Does the basil help too or not really?

Yes! Tomato can be so sharp if you don’t mellow it out—cream or even a pinch of sugar makes a huge difference. Glad you figured out what was going on!

Not gonna lie, I found it a little bland until I added more black pepper. Also I didn’t have fresh basil so I used dried—still decent.

Too creamy for my taste. 😬 I prefer more of a broth type of soup.

    1. 5 stars
I totally get what you mean! Maybe you could try reducing the cream or leaving it out altogether. A lighter broth sounds good!

  9. 4 stars
The amount of garlic feels right, but I think 1/2 cup cream is too much for me. Next time I’ll use less or add a splash at the very end so it doesn’t get too heavy.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—1/2 cup cream can make it feel super heavy. I usually start with about 1/4 cup and add more only if it needs it. That “splash at the end” trick is perfect!

  10. 5 stars
Easy peasy. My kids actually ate it! Shocked, haha!

The instructions were a bit confusing first time, I mixed up the broth and tomatoes…oops! Still tasty tho!

  12. User avatar daphne.kerluke19 says:

Pretty good for a quick tomato soup. I used regular broth and didn’t bother with heavy cream (still tasty). Next time I’ll blend a little longer to get it extra smooth.

I tried it but it turned out kinda bland. Maybe I didn’t use enough salt? Not sure if I’ll make it again.

Maybe you just need to add more seasoning next time! A pinch of cayenne pepper could spice it up too. 😄

    2. 3 stars
I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you. Sometimes tomatoes can be super bland too if they aren’t in season. Try some fires roasted ones next time.

I love this recipe! It’s the perfect way to use up tomatoes. Plus it’s really healthy.

  15. User avatar Wellington Yueh says:

The texture came out smooth, but I think 20 minutes simmer isn’t enough for super sweet tomato flavor. Next time I’ll simmer a bit longer.

Tomatoes are not good for soup. They make it taste weird. I prefer chicken soup. 😕

I followed the recipe but my soup turned out too watery. What did I do wrong? 🙁

  18. User avatar annabell.fisher2024 says:

I followed it mostly, but my blender splashed everywhere when I tried batches—pro tip: vent the lid. Still delicious though.

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about the sugar step, but it actually balanced the tomatoes like it says. I might reduce the sugar to 1/2 tsp though.

Made this tonight and it was super comforting. The immersion blender made it perfectly smooth, and the fresh basil at the end really pops. I skipped the cream but it still tasted rich enough for me.

    1. User avatar freeda.altenwerth says:

      5 stars
Yes! Same here—immersion blender + fresh basil at the end is the magic combo. Glad it still worked great without the cream.

    2. User avatar zola.jones51 says:

I tried it but mine turned out kinda acidic, even with the sugar. Maybe my tomatoes were too tart. Still tasted good tho, just not super “rich.”
