Spiced Baked Whole Fish

June 5, 2024

If you’re looking to impress at your next dinner, spiced baked whole fish is the way to go. This dish brings out the natural flavors of the fish while infusing it with a beautiful mix of spices. With minimal effort and maximum flavor, it’s an elegant and healthy choice that works for any occasion, whether it’s a weeknight meal or a special dinner for guests.

The first step is choosing the right fish. A whole fish, like snapper, bass, or sea bream, works best for this recipe. Whole fish retains moisture while cooking, ensuring a tender, flaky texture that’s full of flavor. You’ll start by cleaning and scaling the fish, leaving the head and tail on for presentation. Don’t worry, it’s much easier than it sounds!

Next, prepare the spice mixture. A combination of aromatic spices like cumin, coriander, paprika, garlic, and a bit of cayenne for heat will infuse the fish with warmth and depth. You can also add fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley and a squeeze of lemon juice to brighten the flavors. Rub the spice mixture all over the fish, inside and out, allowing the flavors to marinate for at least 20 minutes (or longer if you have the time).

Once seasoned, place the fish on a baking sheet and bake it in the oven at 400°F (200°C) for about 20-25 minutes, or until the fish is cooked through and the skin crisps up. The result is a beautifully spiced fish with crispy skin, tender flesh, and an explosion of flavor in every bite.

Serve the spiced baked whole fish with a side of roasted vegetables, couscous, or a fresh salad for a balanced and satisfying meal. Whether you’re preparing a dinner for two or feeding a crowd, this dish is sure to become a favorite in your cooking repertoire.

Just made this—my kitchen smells amazing. The diagonal cuts really helped the seasoning soak in. Super flavorful and the lemon makes it feel restaurant-level.

Too many spices for my liking. I’m more of a salt and pepper person.

Can you use any fish for this? I only have tilapia.

Yeah, tilapia should work fine! Just make sure to adjust the cooking time since it’s thinner than a whole fish.

Loved it! But I cooked it too long and it was a bit dry. Oops! Next time, less time in the oven! 😂

It was okay, but I think I put too much cumin. Next time less cumin! Just saying.

The spice paste was legit, but I think I put too much cumin? It became a bit overpowering for me. Next time I’ll scale it down.

Yeah, cumin can sneak up on you. If it felt overpowering, I’d cut it to 1/4–1/3 tsp next time or balance with a touch more coriander/paprika.

I tried this and my fish turned out kinda dry. Did you really bake it for 25-30 mins? Seems too long to me!

I tried this recipe too, but my fish came out dry. Maybe I cooked it too long? Anyone else have this problem?

  13. 2 stars
Um, does anyone else think cumin is too strong for fish? Just me? 🤨

I dunno, cumin with fish sounds weird. Maybe stick with lemon and herbs instead? 🤷‍♂️

I think cumin adds a nice touch! It’s all about balance. Just don’t overdo it! 👍

A whole fish? Really? Who even eats that? I prefer fillets, it’s cleaner. 🤷‍♂️

    1. 3 stars
Nah, I don’t like the eyes staring at me. Fillets are way better. Just saying.

    2. User avatar rocio.hauck1972 says:

Whole fish is the best! You get all the flavors. Fillets just can’t compete. 😋

Honestly I was skeptical of baking a whole fish without a foil tent, but it worked. Flaked perfectly and didn’t dry out.

No way! I loved it as it was, the spices were just right for me. You might have used too little or something.
