Shrimp Pasta Salad

December 6, 2024

Shrimp pasta salad is a refreshing and satisfying dish, perfect for warm weather gatherings, picnics, or as a light yet filling meal. The combination of tender shrimp, cooked pasta, and crunchy vegetables tossed in a creamy dressing makes it a flavorful, versatile dish that everyone will love. Whether served as a side or a main course, this shrimp pasta salad is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

To begin, cook your favorite pasta—short shapes like rotini, penne, or farfalle work best for pasta salad—until al dente. Drain and set it aside to cool. You can rinse the pasta with cold water to speed up the cooling process if you’re short on time.

Next, prepare the shrimp. You can use cooked shrimp for convenience, but if you prefer to cook your own, sauté peeled and deveined shrimp in a bit of olive oil with garlic, salt, and pepper until pink and fully cooked (about 2-3 minutes per side). Let the shrimp cool slightly before adding them to the salad.

For the vegetables, chop up fresh ingredients like cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, red bell peppers, and red onions. You can also add corn, celery, or olives for additional flavor and texture. The vegetables not only add color to the dish but also a nice crunch to balance the creamy dressing and tender shrimp.

For the dressing, combine mayonnaise, a bit of Greek yogurt or sour cream, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. You can adjust the creaminess by adding more or less mayo, depending on your preference. For extra flavor, add minced garlic, a pinch of dried herbs like oregano or dill, and a dash of hot sauce or paprika for a little kick.

In a large bowl, combine the cooked pasta, shrimp, and chopped vegetables. Pour the dressing over the mixture and toss everything together gently to coat. Taste and adjust the seasoning, adding more salt, pepper, or lemon juice as needed.

Chill the salad in the refrigerator for at least an hour before serving, as this allows the flavors to meld together. Serve the shrimp pasta salad cold, garnished with fresh herbs like parsley or basil for an added touch of freshness.

This shrimp pasta salad is light, flavorful, and easy to make. It’s a great dish to bring to a potluck or enjoy on a sunny day. With its combination of shrimp, pasta, and fresh veggies, it’s a perfect balance of flavors and textures that everyone will enjoy.

Why do you need to chill it? Seems weird. I’m eating it right away!

  2. 2 stars
Can confirm: 3-4 minutes shrimp is risky if your pan runs hot. I overcooked mine slightly and they got a little rubbery. Otherwise delicious.

This salad is amazing! Perfect for summer days. The flavor is just right.

Not gonna lie I was skeptical about shrimp in pasta salad. But after chilling 30 mins, the flavors actually melded. My family went back for seconds.

I get the skepticism—shrimp in pasta salad sounds a little weird at first. But the 30-minute chill really does help everything come together. I’ve had similar luck with chicken pasta salads too. Glad your family liked it!

  5. 5 stars
    So good, so refreshing! ❤️

  6. User avatar mckinley.ebert2019 says:

Yum! Can’t wait to serve this at the picnic! Perfect for summer.

  7. User avatar carla.morissette85 says:

Do u really need the shrimp? I don’t like seafood but I tried it anyway. Too fancy for me.

  8. 4 stars
My kids refused the dill (typical) so I swapped with parsley. Still came out nice and refreshing. Also I used grape tomatoes instead of cherry—close enough!

  9. User avatar Lynn Senger says:

    5 stars
Wow!! This is perfect for summer picnics! My family loved it!!!

    1. User avatar Frodo Baggins says:

      3 stars
Really? I tried it and it was kinda bland. I thought it would be more flavorful, maybe I missed something?

    2. 5 stars
Glad to hear it! It’s a family fave for sure! 😍

  10. User avatar Enola Howell says:

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about mixing shrimp into pasta salad, but the cold shrimp with the veggies is actually really good.

  11. 2 stars
I don’t like pasta salads, but this one was okay. Also why use shrimp? Not everyone likes it.

    1. 4 stars
I totally get what you’re saying! Not everyone is a shrimp fan, but I think you could easily swap it out for chicken or just add more veggies instead. Glad you found it okay, though!

    2. 2 stars
Why do people keep puttin shrimp in things? GROSS! I’d choose veggies over shrimp any day, but I’m sure others might enjoy this.

  12. User avatar nery.powlowski says:

Easy and delicious! The kids even ate it! 🙂

30 minutes in the fridge wasn’t enough for me—flavors felt separated. I let it sit an hour and it was way better.

    1. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

      5 stars
Good point! I always find salad dressings need more time than the instructions say—30 min is barely a “hello” for the flavors. Glad an hour worked for you!

  15. User avatar allene.wolff43 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and it turned out bland. I added more black pepper and a bit more lemon and it improved, but it still needed something like garlic.

  16. User avatar agnes.krajcik says:

    4 stars
Easy and quick to make! I added some garlic and it was super delicious. A keeper for sure!

  17. User avatar meryl.hansen26 says:

Nice recipe, but where’s the seasoning? I think it needs more than just salt and pepper.

  18. User avatar genevive.beer90 says:

    2 stars
I tried making this but it came out kinda soggy. Did I overdo the mayo? Not sure if I’ll try again.

  19. User avatar robin.wunsch97 says:

    3 stars
Tastes pretty nice but my shrimp got a bit overcooked, so it was chewier than I wanted. Don’t rush step 2!

    1. User avatar melida.heller says:

      5 stars
Oh no—yeah, shrimp can go chewy fast. I always do the 3 minutes max and pull them the second they turn opaque. Thanks for the reminder on step 2!

    2. User avatar Majikthise says:

      3 stars
I think 3-4 minutes is a bit long, mine did the same thing 😅 Next time I’ll do less. Also, does rinsing the pasta with cold water make it soggy or just stops it from cooking?

  20. User avatar kyoko.beahan2014 says:

    4 stars
I don’t like dill, so I used parsley instead. Came out really tasty, just a tip!

  21. User avatar Hubert Ortiz says:

My kiddo loves it! Even the tomatoes. That’s saying something! 😄

  22. User avatar clair.lesch9 says:

5 stars! Perfect dish for my BBQ. Everyone loved it.

  23. User avatar thomas.dubuque says:

    2 stars
Shrimp and pasta? Not a good mix, man. I usually love shrimp, but not in salad.

  24. 2 stars
What’s the point of putting cucumber? It was soggy. I don’t think I’ll try this again.

    1. User avatar shawn.altenwerth says:

      4 stars
I actually think the cucumber adds a nice crunch! It’s refreshing in the dish. Maybe try cutting it smaller next time?

    2. User avatar maynard.volkman84 says:

      3 stars
Not everyone likes cucumber, but I like it! Soggy or not, my kids ate it, lol. 😊

  25. User avatar fannie.hamill says:

    3 stars
I don’t know, sounds a bit bland to me. Needs more spices maybe?

  26. User avatar hiram.renner42 says:

    2 stars
Looks nice. I don’t have dill though—can I use oregano? Also can I use frozen shrimp? Sorry if these are dumb questions.

  27. 4 stars
Love the texture—pasta + cucumber + tomatoes is such a satisfying mix. I used red onion and it was a bit strong; next time I’ll soak it or use less.

  28. 4 stars
Garlic would make this elite. Also I didn’t have fresh dill so I used dried—still tasty, just not as bright.

    1. User avatar hans.bradtke says:

      3 stars
I did something similar but I used like way too much dried dill once and it tasted kinda… grassy? Maybe that’s just me 😅 Still, shrimp pasta salad sounds good. For the garlic, what kind—powder or fresh?

    2. User avatar jessie.beahan says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—garlic would level this up. Dill + lemon is already a great combo; garlic would just add that extra punch. Nice save on using dried too!

  29. User avatar danita.treutel says:

    4 stars
Very easy to make! I added some garlic and it took it to a whole new level! Yum!

    1. User avatar laure.parker61 says:

      4 stars
Garlic is a great addition! I always thought it would overpower the dish, but I guess it really depends on how much you use. Can’t wait to try it your way!

  30. User avatar waldo.abbott says:

    5 stars
Made it for a picnic, and it was a hit! Everyone wanted the recipe.

  31. User avatar Flame Atronach says:

    4 stars
So good, but I think I would add more lemon juice. Gets a bit bland after a while.

  32. User avatar Synthia Ebert says:

    5 stars
This shrimp pasta salad is fantastic! The flavors meld so well together. I’ll definitely make it again.

  33. 5 stars
I followed it exactly and the flavors melded well after chilling. The cucumber keeps it crisp. Great summer salad vibe.

    1. 5 stars
Yes! The cucumber + lemon + dill combo is *chef’s kiss*. I did 1 hour chilling and it was even better—will make again for sure.

    2. User avatar ashley.kihn2005 says:

      3 stars
I tried this too but my shrimp came out kinda tough even though I cooked 3-4 mins… maybe my pan was too hot? Still tastes good though, kinda refreshing.

  34. User avatar deanne.okeefe62 says:

    1 star
Shrimp? I thought we were gonna use chicken! What a let down.

    1. User avatar alphonso.schiller says:

      5 stars
But shrimp is yummier! Chicken gets dry sometimes, ya know?

    2. User avatar kristyn.leuschke43 says:

      4 stars
You can always swap the shrimp for chicken if you want! Just cook it the same way. It’s not the end of the world. 😅

  35. 4 stars
Yum! Just made this and my husband loved it! Will definitely make again.

    1. 5 stars
I’m so glad to hear that! It’s a family favorite for sure. What did you serve it with?

  36. User avatar jacqueline.glover says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but I think 3-4 minutes for shrimp might be a little too long if your shrimp are small. Mine got slightly chewy. Still good though, especially with the cool pasta.

  37. User avatar owen.legros59 says:

    5 stars
This shrimp pasta salad is so refreshing! Perfect for summer, I added some avocado too.

    1. User avatar miguel.wehner1960 says:

      5 stars
I love shrimp pasta salad! It sounds so good with avocado. I might try it with some feta too!

    2. User avatar steve_maga says:

      3 stars
Doesn’t this salad get soggy after a while? I prefer my pasta hot. Just seems weird to me.

  38. User avatar nakia.turner0 says:

    5 stars
Reminded me of a dish my grandma used to make! Nostalgia on a plate.

    1. User avatar brigid.bergstrom55 says:

      2 stars
But shrimp pasta salad? My grandma never made that! Are you sure that’s what you meant?

    2. User avatar cyril.nienow says:

      5 stars
That sounds delicious! I love when food brings back memories. Can’t wait to try it out!

  39. 3 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but mine turned a bit bland even after tasting. I think I under-salted the dressing—still tasty though.

  40. User avatar cortez.ferry62 says:

    3 stars
Too much mayo! I’d say cut it down. Gonna try it again with less.

  41. User avatar mikel.vonrueden36 says:

    5 stars
This was SO good! I added some cheese and it made it even better! Will make again.

    1. User avatar paul.reilly28 says:

      5 stars
Cheese?! I never thought of adding that! Sounds delicious though!

  42. User avatar quentin.strosin says:

    2 stars
Shrimp pasta salad? Why not just eat the shrimp alone? Feels like overkill!

  43. User avatar domenica.farrell67 says:

    3 stars
I might be doing something wrong, because my pasta salad came out kinda dry. Maybe I used low-mayo or overcooked the shrimp? Still edible though.

  44. User avatar veronika.keebler says:

    4 stars
So tasty! I was skeptical about mayo with shrimp, but it worked!

    1. User avatar marvin.runolfsdottir42 says:

      5 stars
I never thought mayo could go with shrimp either! But now I’m a believer. This recipe is a winner!

  45. User avatar keturah.lebsack43 says:

    3 stars
I thought this was gonna be better. The mayo taste was too strong for me, maybe less of it next time?

  46. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I wasn’t convinced mayo + seafood would work, but it actually did. Kind of like a shrimp version of potato salad.

  47. User avatar mathWizard says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! I used rotini and it held the dressing nicely. Next time I’ll add a bit more pepper and maybe a splash more lemon for extra zing.

  48. User avatar angelique.kessler1956 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about mayo in pasta salad, but it works. The dressing clings nicely and the tomatoes pop. Will make again for sure.

  49. 2 stars
I tried it and my pasta was soggy. Didn’t turn out well for me.

  50. User avatar alena.kovacek1950 says:

    5 stars
Super easy! The only change: I added a pinch of smoked paprika and it made it way more interesting. Cold leftovers slap.

  51. User avatar amira.rath1957 says:

    5 stars
Made this for lunch and it’s super refreshing. The lemon + dill combo is spot on, and the shrimp stayed tender. Will definitely make again.

  52. User avatar cesar.boyer78 says:

    3 stars
I found it kinda bland. Maybe needs more seasoning or a sauce? Just my opinion.

  53. 5 stars
This is bussin 🔥 chilled shrimp pasta salad is my new thing.

  54. 1 star
    Ok…

  55. 5 stars
The instructions are clear and the ingredients are simple. I used penne and it held up well. The dressing is creamy without being too heavy.

  56. User avatar domonique.hilpert95 says:

    5 stars
Wow this is amazing 😭 I brought it to a potluck and everyone asked for the recipe. The shrimp stayed juicy!

  57. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    5 stars
This shrimp pasta salad is just like how my grandma used to make it! So good!

  58. User avatar orval.moore says:

    3 stars
It was ok. Not my favorite, but better than some.

  59. 5 stars
This looks super fresh and perfect for summer. The lemon + dill combo is exactly what I’m craving. Can’t wait to make it!

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—lemon + dill makes it feel so light and summery. I bet the chilled flavors will be amazing. Let me know how you season it!

    2. User avatar lloyd.thiel26 says:

      3 stars
Wait, 3-4 minutes for shrimp? Mine always gets rubbery if I blink 😅 also do you rinse the pasta after cooking like… really cool it off? Sounds good though.

  60. User avatar Feral Falmer says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I think the mayo was too much for me. Maybe less next time?

    1. User avatar erik.auer12 says:

      4 stars
I totally get that! I think mayo can be really overpowering sometimes. Maybe try yogurt instead next time?

    2. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      3 stars
Nah, I think the mayo makes it creamy and delish! Just add more shrimp to balance it out. 🦐

  61. 1 star
Yuck!! I couldn’t even finish it! The shrimp tasted weird and the dressing was slimy.

  62. 4 stars
The recipe is fine, but 1 cup cucumber + 1 cup tomatoes felt like a lot of water. I drained the cucumbers and it improved a lot.

    1. User avatar collin.klocko1983 says:

      4 stars
Huh I didn’t think cucumber was that watery 😅 but maybe mine were extra juicy. I usually add less cucumber next time or just let it sit and pour off any liquid.

    2. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

      5 stars
Good point! Cucumbers can hold a ton of water. Draining and patting them dry (or salting briefly) usually helps the salad not get watery. Glad it improved for you!

  63. 5 stars
Shrimp pasta salad is my weakness lol. This one tastes like something you’d get at a deli. I added extra dill because why not.

  64. User avatar Margot Fenring says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but mine turned a little too mayo-heavy. I think 1/4 cup was slightly much for my taste—maybe cut it down to 2-3 tbsp and it’ll be perfect.

  65. User avatar jan.roberts99 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, though I think 1/4 cup red onion might be a bit strong. Next time I’ll use less or soak it briefly. Still tasty and the chilling step really helps.

    1. User avatar rhinoceros says:

      5 stars
Totally agree on the onion—raw red onion can be a bit punchy. I usually soak mine in cold water 10 minutes and it makes a big difference without losing flavor. Glad the chill helped!

  66. 5 stars
This pasta salad was amazing! The shrimp were so tender, and the flavors melded perfectly. Will definitely make again!

  67. User avatar Trin Tragula says:

    1 star
This recipe is terrible. Shrimp stink and pasta too! Never again.

  68. User avatar yuki.harber96 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly, but my shrimp got a little rubbery after 4 minutes. Maybe my skillet runs hot. Everything else was delicious—wish I didn’t overcook the shrimp though.

  69. 4 stars
This sounds tasty but I’m skeptical about mayo + seafood. That said… it actually didn’t taste fishy at all. Surprised me in a good way.

  70. 4 stars
Quick & easy to make! I added avocado and it was delicious!

    1. User avatar graham.mcglynn says:

      5 stars
I love the addition of avocado! It really kicks it up a notch. Great tip!

  71. User avatar shirely.schulist says:

    2 stars
Why use shrimp? Don’t you think chicken would work better?

  72. User avatar jonas.bailey says:

    4 stars
Made it last night—tasty, but I think 30 minutes wasn’t enough for me. Next time I’ll chill it longer. Also I added a little garlic because… why not 😅

    1. 5 stars
Yesss chill time really makes a difference—glad you enjoyed it! Garlic sounds like a great little upgrade 😄

  73. User avatar ngan.bergstrom1989 says:

    4 stars
I’m not sure about mayo + lemon with shrimp—sounds kinda weird, but I tried anyway. It actually turned out good, just make sure you taste for salt.

  74. User avatar rusty.ziemann58 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good. I used whole wheat pasta to make it healthier. Still tasty!

    1. User avatar liz.breitenberg says:

      2 stars
Meh, whole wheat pasta doesn’t taste the same. I’d stick with regular pasta for better flavor. Just my opinion!

    2. User avatar wilfredo.fritsch says:

      5 stars
Using whole wheat pasta is a great idea! It adds fiber too. Good to hear it was still tasty!

  75. 3 stars
I used whole wheat pasta and it was a little too firm. Maybe regular pasta would’ve been better for this chilled salad.

  76. User avatar napoleon.beer18 says:

    3 stars
Too salty for me even though I went easy on the salt. Maybe because the mayonnaise brand is already salty? I’ll reduce it next time and maybe add more cucumber to balance.

  77. 4 stars
Tasty dish! But maybe I shoulda cooked the shrimp a lil longer… it was soft.

  78. 5 stars
Delicious! My kids ate it all up, even the tomatoes!

  79. User avatar ike.smitham11 says:

    2 stars
Ehh, it didn’t taste like much to me. Maybe more seasoning? Idk.

    1. 4 stars
I think you might be right! A bit more salt or some garlic could really make it pop. It’s a pretty basic recipe.

  80. User avatar kennith.yost says:

    5 stars
This was amazing! The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the flavors all came together nicely.

  81. 5 stars
Made this for lunch and it was shockingly good—fresh, tangy, not mayo-heavy. The dill + lemon combo really pops.

  82. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about mayo-based pasta salad with shrimp. But I tried it and it works! The lemon juice cuts the mayo and keeps it from tasting heavy.

  83. User avatar Super Saiyan Blue Goku says:

    2 stars
Meh. Too much mayo and dill for my taste. Also my tomatoes were kinda tiny so it looked sad.

  84. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    5 stars
Made this for lunch and it was super fresh. The dill + lemon combo is such a win, and the shrimp stayed nice and tender.

  85. User avatar patria.russel88 says:

    3 stars
The steps are simple, but I’m confused about rinsing the pasta. Shouldn’t you cool it without rinsing? I did rinse anyway and it turned out fine.

    1. 4 stars
I always skip rinsing and just cool it with a quick toss in the bowl. If you rinse, you might lose a bit of that starch that helps the dressing cling, but yours turned out fine so I guess it works for this recipe.

    2. User avatar Sabre Cat says:

      5 stars
You’re right that cooling happens without rinsing for a lot of dishes, but rinsing can help keep pasta salad from turning clumpy/starchy. Since it’s chilled anyway, cold water makes sense 👍

  86. 2 stars
Where does the dill come into play? I forgot to get it and it was just… eh.

    1. 5 stars
You definitely need the dill! It adds a great flavor! Maybe try again and remember to grab it next time.

  87. User avatar Draugr Overlord says:

    3 stars
Okay but why rinse the pasta under cold water? That seemed weird to me… it worked out though.

  88. 3 stars
My shrimp came out slightly rubbery even though I cooked only about 4 minutes. Maybe my pan was too hot. Flavor still good though.

  89. User avatar norbert.davis42 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! I might cut back on the mayo next time because mine got a little heavy, but the shrimp timing was perfect and everything tasted fresh.

    1. User avatar denis.schroeder says:

      5 stars
Totally agree on the mayo—this salad can get heavy fast. I’ve started using a little less and adding extra lemon to balance it, and it’s been perfect.

  90. User avatar wally.turner says:

    5 stars
Made this last night—really fresh and light. The lemon + dill combo is on point. I added a little extra black pepper and it tasted restaurant-level.

  91. User avatar Lorenza O'Keefe says:

    4 stars
I used frozen shrimp and it still tasted good. Frozen vegetables might work too?

  92. User avatar Spriggan Earth Mother says:

    2 stars
I didn’t rinse the pasta under cold water and it turned kinda mushy. Lesson learned. Flavor was still okay but texture was off—so don’t skip that step.

  93. User avatar nova.reinger1982 says:

    2 stars
Dill is a strong flavor… I used dried and maybe way too much. Won’t lie, it overpowered everything for me.

  94. User avatar Kory Haley says:

I wasn’t sure about the mayo, but it actually worked. Surprised me! Thought would be soggy.

Made this for lunch this week—super fresh and actually feels like a real meal, not just “salad.” The lemon + dill combo is the star. I used elbow pasta and shrimp came out perfectly pink.

“To taste” everything is annoying when you’re trying to be precise 😅 but overall solid. Chill time definitely helps.

Solid recipe. I used penne and grape tomatoes because that’s what I had. Next time I’ll probably add a little more pepper, but overall 10/10.

Sooo good. 30 mins chill is enough, trust me.

I followed it pretty closely. Next time I’ll add a little garlic and maybe some feta. Still, great balance of flavors.

I subbed Greek yogurt for mayo and it still worked—lighter, same tang. Really good with cold leftover shrimp pasta.

That sounds awesome—Greek yogurt really does make it lighter without losing the tang. Cold leftover shrimp pasta is such a good call too!

Looks nice. But I dont get why boil pasta then rinse—wouldn’t it get watery? Maybe im just doing it wrong.

Totally fair question! Rinsing after boiling helps cool the pasta quickly and stops it from getting mushy. You drain really well first, then a quick cold rinse just keeps it from overcooking—not soaking it. Also, since it’s a salad (chilled) and you toss it with a fairly thick mayo-lemon dressing, it won’t taste watery the way you might fear.

The mayo-lemon dressing feels a little heavy to me for summer salad… but hey, it works. I added some garlic powder and it tasted better.

My shrimp overcooked a tiny bit (oops), so it got a little rubbery. Flavor is still good though—cold pasta salad vibes are real.

This is good, but the mayo feels heavy compared to the amount of lemon. Next time I’ll do half mayo and half Greek yogurt. Also, rinsing pasta was key—otherwise it clumped.

Totally agree—mayo can overpower lemon fast. Half mayo/half Greek yogurt sounds like the perfect lighter balance, and I’m glad rinsing helped with the clumping!

This is such a refreshing summer bowl. The lemon + dill combo is on point, and the cucumber makes it feel light. I used penne and it held up great after chilling.

Yes!! The lemon + dill combo totally makes this sing. I also liked how the cucumber keeps it from feeling heavy. I used small bowties and it chilled up nicely too.

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about dill with shrimp, but it came out surprisingly good. I did add a bit more lemon juice than the recipe says—kinda just by feeling—because mine needed more punch after chilling.
