Muhammara is a delicious and spicy Middle Eastern dip made from roasted red peppers, walnuts, and a blend of spices. It is perfect for serving with bread, crackers, or vegetables.
Muhammara is a vibrant, flavorful spread that hails from Syria, offering a delicious combination of smoky, sweet, and spicy notes. This traditional Middle Eastern dip is made primarily from roasted red peppers, walnuts, and olive oil, creating a rich and creamy texture that is perfect for dipping or spreading on bread, crackers, or veggies.
The base of Muhammara is roasted red peppers, which are blended into a smooth, velvety paste. The roasted peppers bring a deep, smoky flavor, while the walnuts add richness and a slight earthy taste. A dash of lemon juice, garlic, and a touch of chili or paprika provide the perfect balance of acidity, sweetness, and heat. This combination results in a dip that’s complex yet easy to make, with layers of flavor that are sure to impress your taste buds.
What makes Muhammara so appealing is its versatility. It can be served as a dip at parties or gatherings, used as a topping for grilled meats, or even enjoyed as a spread on sandwiches and wraps. The texture is thick enough to spread but smooth enough to serve as a dip, making it the ideal accompaniment for pita bread, crunchy veggies, or even roasted potatoes.
This dip is not only delicious but also a healthier alternative to many other spreads. It’s packed with antioxidants from the red peppers, healthy fats from the walnuts, and vitamins from the olive oil, making it both flavorful and nutritious. Plus, it’s naturally vegan and gluten-free, making it accessible to a wide variety of dietary preferences.
Muhammara is a fantastic way to introduce bold Middle Eastern flavors into your meals. Its smoky richness and balanced flavors make it a perfect addition to any appetizer spread or a simple snack to enjoy at home.

What’s the point of this recipe? Just seems like a fancy dip to me. Not for everyone. 😐
Not gonna lie, 3 tbsp bread crumbs feels like a lot. Mine got a little thick/paste-y, but I fixed it by adding extra olive oil. Still tasty.
Really really good! I added some extra garlic and it turned out great!
Glad you liked it! Extra garlic sounds delicious! I’ll have to try that next time.
I don’t get the hype! Just sounds like a fancy dip for bread. Meh.
But it’s so much more than just a dip! The flavors are incredible, you really need to give it a try!
Why not just use peanuts? To each their own, I guess. Not for me.
Awesome! Perfect with pita chips! My new go-to party dip!
Looks interesting, but do you really need all those fancy ingredients? Can’t I skip the pomegranate?
Nah, you gotta have the pomegranate molasses for it to be legit! Don’t skimp on the good stuff!
You can totally skip the pomegranate! It just adds a unique flavor, but if you don’t have it, it should still taste good. Just adjust some spices maybe?
5 stars! Perfect with pita bread. My kids even ate it! Who knew they liked walnuts?
Yo this is fire 😅 I used less garlic bc I’m scared of strong flavors, and it still slapped with crackers.
Muhammara is life! So healthy and filled with goodness. Will keep making!
I tried making this but it turned out way too thick. Did I do something wrong? Only giving it 3 stars.
YOLO, tried it but not my jam. Too complex or whatever lol.
Easy to make! Just make sure to roast those peppers well!
This recipe is amazing! I love the flavors. Can’t wait to make it again!
WAYYYYY too spicy for my kids! I think I overdid the red pepper flakes.
Not for me. Bell peppers roasted in the oven smell amazing, but the pomegranate molasses makes it too sweet. I’d cut it in half.
Made this last night—so smoky and tangy. The pomegranate molasses is the star. I added extra lemon too and it was perfect with pita.
Bread crumbs? Why not more walnuts 😅 Mine was kinda thick, and I had to thin it. Otherwise tasted nice.
Totally get that 😄 I’ve seen a few versions—more walnuts would definitely make it richer and thicker. If yours was thick, thinning with a bit of extra olive oil or a splash of lemon juice/pomegranate molasses usually helps me. Glad it still tasted nice!
I didn’t have pomegranate molasses so I used ketchup. It was a big mistake. 😂
Ketchup? Really? That’s a bold choice. 😂 But I hope you learned for next time! Pomegranate molasses is way better!
This tastes great with pita chips!! I added a bit more garlic and it was perfect! 5 stars!
Followed the steps pretty closely and it was delicious, but I had to add a bit more olive oil to get the texture smoother. Still a keeper.
This muhammara is soooo good! I made it for a party and everyone loved it!
Simple recipe! I made this for a party and people couldn’t get enough!
That sounds amazing! Can’t wait to try it for my next gathering. Thanks for sharing!
This recipe is missing something… like maybe tahini? I’ve had muhammara elsewhere and it was creamier. Still decent, but feels incomplete.
I don’t think it needs tahini to be legit. Muhammara is usually pepper + walnut + bread crumbs + molasses, and blending until smooth is key. If you want it creamier, add a bit more olive oil or even more toasted walnuts.
Omg yes! I’ve made muhammara before and it always has a creaminess to it—tahini or sometimes extra oil. This one tastes good but definitely feels a little “dry”/incomplete without that nutty sauce base.
I don’t get the hype for this dish. It tasted kinda bland… maybe it needs more spice?
This turned out so rich and smoky. The pomegranate molasses is the perfect sweet-tang balance—made me want to eat it straight with a spoon 😄
This recipe is amazing! I never thought I could make something so delicious at home.
Tried it but it came out too sour. Maybe I added too much lemon? Not sure I’ll try again.
This was amazing! Never tasted anything like it. So rich and flavorful!
I’m glad you loved it! I also had the same reaction when I first tried it. It’s super easy to make too!
Sounds good, but I don’t know about putting walnuts in there… nuts can be weird in dips. Where’s the cheese?
I tried making this but forgot the molasses 😩. Came out weird. Make sure to use it!
Forgeting things is just part of cooking, huh? Still, you could’ve used honey or something as a substitute.
Oh no! Molasses is key! 🤦♀️ I’ve also done that and it just doesn’t taste the same. Hope you try again!
