Mango and Pistachio Phirni is a luxurious yet simple Indian dessert that brings together the richness of traditional phirni with the tropical sweetness of ripe mango and the nutty crunch of pistachios. This chilled rice pudding is not only refreshing but also full of delicate flavors, making it perfect for warm-weather celebrations or as a sweet ending to any meal.
Phirni, at its core, is a creamy dessert made with ground rice, milk, and sugar, slow-cooked until thick and smooth. What sets it apart from other puddings is its silky texture and the fragrant additions of cardamom and rose water, which give it a uniquely comforting aroma. The mixture is usually poured into small clay pots and chilled, allowing the flavors to deepen and the texture to set into a velvety custard.
The addition of mango brings a burst of freshness to the classic recipe. Ripe, juicy mangoes are pureed and folded into the cooled phirni, infusing the dessert with their natural sweetness and vibrant color. This tropical element lightens the traditional dish and adds a fruity layer that pairs beautifully with the creamy base.
Pistachios offer a satisfying contrast, both visually and in texture. Finely chopped or slivered, they are sprinkled on top before serving, adding a touch of elegance and a subtle crunch. Their earthy, slightly sweet flavor enhances the richness of the phirni while also balancing the mango’s brightness.
What makes Mango and Pistachio Phirni especially appealing is how easy it is to prepare ahead of time. It’s served cold, making it a great make-ahead dessert for parties, family dinners, or festive occasions. Plus, its creamy texture and mild sweetness make it a crowd-pleaser for all ages.
In short, Mango and Pistachio Phirni is a modern take on a timeless Indian dessert. It’s a perfect harmony of creamy, fruity, and nutty elements, ideal for those looking to enjoy something both traditional and refreshingly different. Whether served in individual bowls or elegant ramekins, it’s a dessert that feels special with every spoonful.

I had a hard time getting the rice paste right. Mine turned out lumpy.
The steps were kinda confusing, I thought I could just add everything at once. Had to start over, ugh.
I don’t know, it seems a bit too complicated for a dessert. Why not just buy something from the store? 🤷♂️
I tried something similar before and the rice paste can get lumpy if you don’t stir constantly. The instructions say stirring continuously, so I’m hopeful this will work.
Not bad at all! I had to substitute milk for coconut milk because we’re out, and it turned into something different but kinda delicious. Garnish with pistachios saved it.
My family would devour this. The pistachios on top are a nice touch—gives crunch against the pudding. Definitely adding to my list.
Phirni is my weakness 😅 but I’m not sure about 4 cups milk with just 1 cup rice—will it thicken enough? Maybe I’ll cook it longer. Still sounds really tasty!
Yum—mango + pistachios sounds like the perfect combo. I love how the crunch balances the creamy phirni. Adding this to my dessert rotation for sure!
Not very easy to make, I almost burnt the milk. More instructions would help.
This was delicious! The mango and pistachio combo is amazing. Will make again for sure!
This is not real phirni! I prefer the traditional way without mango.
I totally get your point! Traditional phirni is classic, but some of us like trying new flavors. Mango adds a nice twist!
My rice didn’t grind well. Ended up with weird chunks. Anyway, it still tasted okay.
I followed the steps but it didn’t thicken like pudding—more like milk soup 😭. Maybe my heat was too low? Or the rice paste was too coarse. Flavor was still okay.
Not gonna lie, mine was bland at first. I realized I used powdered saffron that was basically dust (rookie mistake). After adding more cardamom and pistachios, it improved a lot.
Yasss! So satisfying! Perfect dessert for the summer. 🌞
Looks good, but do you really think mango and pistachio work well together? Seems odd.
Totally agree! This dessert is a game changer. I made it last week and it was gone in minutes! 🍮😋
Is this really traditional? I never heard of adding rose water, seems weird but I will try it.
Not sure about the saffron, it seems weird to me. Can I leave it out?
This is the best dessert ever! So creamy and the mango flavor is on point. A must-try!
Soo good! I thought it would be too sweet, but the mango pulp makes it just right. Refrigerating helped it set perfectly. Will definitely repeat for guests.
Totally agree—mango pulp really balances the sweetness. I did refrigerate overnight and it set so nicely. Great for guests!
I tried this and it came out a bit too thick for me 😅 maybe I cooked the rice paste too long. Still tasty though—next time I’ll loosen with a splash more milk.
😋😋 Perfect summer dessert, easy to make and tastes fancy. Happy with my results!
Not bad, but mine was too sweet. Next time, I’ll cut the sugar. 🙁
Too sweet? Are you sure you didn’t just use too much sugar? I LOVE it sweet!
I totally get what you mean! I find phirni can get really sweet too. Cutting the sugar sounds like a smart move for next time!
Just a warning, the recipe didn’t say how long it should be cooked for. I guessed 10 mins and ruined it. -_-
10 mins? That’s not long enough for anything on a stove! It should thicken up doing low heat for at least 20 mins, maybe more. Did you even read the whole recipe? 🧐
I totally get your frustration! Timing is super important in recipes. Maybe next time, just keep an eye on it after the sugar goes in? I love phirni and this recipe looks great otherwise!
I don’t like pistachios, can I use almonds instead?
Almonds should work fine! Just chop them up like the pistachios, and it’ll taste great. No worries! 😊
I dunno, almonds? I think it will change the flavor a lot. Pistachios are kinda special for this dish. 🤔
I attempted this recipe but mine turned out too runny. What did I do wrong?
I think it was the rice paste, maybe it wasn’t coarse enough? Mine was perfect. 😄
You might have added too much milk or not cooked it long enough. It needs to really thicken up before cooling!
Yummm! So delicious. I couldn’t stop eating it! Gonna make again for sure.
I can’t wait to make this! Mango and pistachio sound like a perfect combo. Thanks for sharing!
This turned out so creamy and fragrant! The mango really comes through, and the saffron + rose water combo is perfect. I garnished extra pistachios and it was gone fast.
I tried it and it turned out too sweet for my taste. Maybe less sugar next time?
This mango phirni recipe is delightful! Sweet and creamy, just like I love it. Will make it again for sure!
This looks so creamy and dessert-y! Mango + phirni is such a good combo. I’d probably bloom the saffron a bit in warm milk, but overall sounds spot on.
So easy and so impressive for guests! I love how fancy it looks with the pistachios.
I couldn’t find saffron, so I skipped it. Still turned out pretty good, just not as rich in flavor.
I’m allergic to mango 😢. Can you use another fruit like banana?
Yeah, I think banana could work but it might taste different. Good luck! 🍌
