Lemon Cake with Lemon Glaze

November 26, 2025

Lemon cake with lemon glaze is the kind of dessert that brings instant sunshine to the table. There is something irresistible about the balance between sweet and bright, the way fresh citrus cuts through the richness of the cake and leaves each bite feeling light rather than heavy. A good lemon cake should be tender, fragrant, and full of flavor, never shy about showcasing the star ingredient. When it is done right, the aroma alone is enough to lift your mood.

This cake starts with a soft crumb, typically enriched with butter, eggs, and just enough sugar to create structure without muting the lemon. Fresh zest is essential because it carries the oils that give lemon desserts their intensity. When the cake bakes, the kitchen fills with a fragrant citrus cloud that hints at what is coming. The texture should stay moist and slightly dense, the kind that slices cleanly and stays tender for days. In many ways, lemon cake is timeless. It fits in at spring gatherings, afternoon coffee breaks, holiday tables, and simple weekday desserts when you crave something bright.

The glaze is where everything comes together. A simple mix of powdered sugar and fresh lemon juice creates a glossy, pourable finish that sinks slightly into the warm cake, forming a sweet tangy shell. It is minimal but transformative. The glaze boosts the lemon flavor and adds a gentle shine that makes even the simplest loaf or round cake look special. Drizzling it slowly over the top and watching it cascade down the sides is its own little moment of satisfaction.

Lemon cake pairs well with all kinds of accompaniments. Fresh berries are the most natural match because their sweetness and acidity mirror that of the cake. A spoonful of raspberry compote or a handful of blueberries gives each slice a refreshing pop of color. Vanilla ice cream works too, adding cool creaminess that complements the citrus without competing with it. For something cozier, serve it with a cup of Earl Grey or chamomile tea or a classic sleepy girl mocktail.

Whether you enjoy it warm, freshly glazed, or chilled the next day, lemon cake with lemon glaze brings a simple but unmistakable joy. It is bright, welcoming, and endlessly shareable, a dessert that never fails to leave a cheerful impression.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour sifted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter room temperature
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice freshly squeezed

  • Once the cake is completely cooled, drizzle the lemon glaze over the top. Serve and enjoy!

It was too sweet for my taste. Maybe cut down the sugar a bit?

    1. 4 stars
I agree, it’s super sweet! Next time I’ll try using less sugar too.

This cake took too long to bake! Mine was raw in the middle. What’s up with that?

I thought this recipe would be easier, but I messed up. What does sifted flour mean?

    1. User avatar brandon.jast says:

      5 stars
Sifted flour means you should use a sifter or a fine mesh to remove any lumps and mix air into the flour. It helps make your cake lighter! Don’t worry, it happens to everyone. Just try again! 😊

  5. 5 stars
Yummy! My kids loved it. Made for a great snack after school!

I don’t know, lemon cakes are overrated. Why not chocolate instead? 🤷‍♂️

I’m glad you loved it! Lemon cakes can be so refreshing. Did you use fresh lemons for the juice and zest?

Do I really need to sift the flour? Seems like a lot of work for a cake.

    1. User avatar paola.anderson94 says:

      5 stars
Sifting the flour helps remove lumps and makes the cake lighter. It’s worth the effort for a better texture!

Lemon zest was such a nice touch! Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Lemon cake? Who needs it! I’d rather have chocolate any day! But my wife loved it.

  12. User avatar sheridan.gislason1988 says:

The texture was good, but mine came out a little dry. I think I overbaked because my toothpick had a few crumbs. Next time I’ll start checking closer to 38-40 minutes.

    1. 4 stars
Glad I’m not the only one—mine was a bit dry too. I think 40 minutes is right on the edge for my oven. I’ll definitely pull it right at the 38 mark next time.

    2. User avatar levi.volkman1956 says:

      4 stars
Texture good but I also overbaked. Toothpick “crumbs” freaked me out even though it probably just needed a little carryover bake. Next time I’m starting the toothpick checks earlier and not going past clean-ish.

  13. User avatar lavona.becker says:

    4 stars
I added poppy seeds and it turned out fantastic! Great recipe!

This is the best lemon cake I have ever baked, better than store bought! Yummm!

  17. 3 stars
I tried making this, but the cake came out too dry. Maybe I overbaked it? 😕

    1. User avatar benito.halvorson9 says:

      4 stars
Sorry to hear that! Yeah, 40-45 mins can be tricky. Maybe try checking it a bit earlier next time? 🍰

The glaze was too sweet for me, maybe less sugar next time?

    1. User avatar Restless Draugr says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! The glaze was so sweet it made my teeth ache. Reducing the sugar is a must for next time.

  22. User avatar buster.feest77 says:

Mine came out a little dry, I think I overbaked by a few minutes. Next time I’ll start checking at 38. Still tasty, just not as soft as I wanted.

  23. User avatar loise.hermiston1962 says:

Lemon cake? Yeah right! My grandma’s cake is the real deal and it don’t have no glaze!

    1. User avatar joaquin.hyatt1957 says:

      4 stars
Grandma’s cake might be good, but this recipe sounds yummy too! Glaze or no glaze, I bet it’s still delicious. 🍰

  24. 2 stars
Idk, i baked it and it sank in the middle a bit. maybe i didn’t creame the butter enuf. also my oven runs hot probably. still tasted ok tho.

    1. User avatar brooks.huel says:

      4 stars
That sounds really plausible—under-creaming can definitely make the center sink. Also if your oven runs hot, the outside can set faster than the middle.

  25. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    4 stars
Really good! I was worried because the batter looked a bit thick, but it turned out moist. I used more zest (because why not) and it tasted even more lemony.

    1. 3 stars
Mine came out kinda dense though. I think my eggs were too cold or I overmixed after adding flour. Also 40-45 min feels long for an 8-inch—maybe my oven runs hot?

    2. User avatar hugh.spencer says:

      5 stars
Good to know about the thick batter—I always panic when it looks “too much” like cookie dough 😂 but moist is exactly what I want. I’ll try with extra zest next time!

  26. User avatar eusebio.strosin says:

    2 stars
I found the instructions confusing. Do I really need to sift the flour? Doesn’t it just make more mess?

  27. 4 stars
Honestly I was worried about the bake time, but 43 minutes was perfect in my oven. Tip: zest more than you think—lemon flavor really pops.

  28. User avatar ok.watsica29 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about 8-inch pan = only 40-45 minutes. Mine was still wet in the middle at 45, so I added 10 more. Once I adjusted, it was fine.

  29. User avatar franchesca.reynolds96 says:

    4 stars
Too sweet for my taste. I think I might try it with less sugar next time.

  30. User avatar basementDweller says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have lemon zest, so I used a whole lemon instead 😂. It was still good but a bit too sour.

    1. User avatar yvette.raynor says:

      4 stars
Glad it still turned out! I’ve done similar swaps and it can be a bit of a gamble sometimes. 🍋

    2. User avatar abel.welch says:

      5 stars
A whole lemon? That sounds kinda crazy! But if it tasted good, who cares? 😂 I might try that too!

  31. User avatar Jordon Schmeler says:

    2 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but my glaze was kinda runny and didn’t drizzle neatly. Maybe my lemon juice was too much—2 tablespoons might’ve been enough.

  32. User avatar anh.hintz says:

    5 stars
umm i forgot to let it cool all the way and the glaze kinda melted. but taste was bomb regardless 😅

    1. User avatar damaris.batz30 says:

      5 stars
Omg this happened to me too 😅 next time I’m gonna be way more patient—glaze melting doesn’t ruin it, it just turns it into a lemon cake situation.

  33. User avatar tobias.bergstrom says:

    3 stars
I liked it but I’m not sure I got the exact texture. Also I accidentally used lemon extract instead of juice once (oops). The flavor was okay though—would probably be better with fresh juice.

  34. User avatar Benito Lemke I says:

    5 stars
Made this yesterday—so bright and zingy. The crumb is tender and the glaze soaks in just enough. Followed the bake time (mine was 42 min). 10/10 for spring vibes.

  35. User avatar dee.ankunding16 says:

    4 stars
This is one of those ‘use what you have’ recipes. I didn’t sift the flour and it was still good—just slightly more dense. Not a dealbreaker.

  36. User avatar isis.macejkovic says:

    4 stars
The instructions are easy, and the cake looks exactly like the classic lemon cake I remember. The glaze is smooth and not too runny. Will bake again.

  37. 5 stars
Made this for my coworkers—so bright and lemony without being weirdly sour. The crumb was tender and the glaze set nicely. Will definitely bake again!
