Healthy Blueberry Muffins

December 28, 2023

There’s nothing quite like the comforting smell of blueberry muffins baking in the oven. But when you’re trying to eat a little healthier, traditional muffins can feel more like dessert than breakfast. That’s where these healthy blueberry muffins come in. They’re light, fluffy, and packed with juicy berries, but made with better-for-you ingredients that don’t skimp on flavor.

Instead of using white flour, these muffins are built on a base of whole wheat flour and oats, giving them a hearty texture and extra fiber. Greek yogurt adds moisture and a slight tang while also bumping up the protein. A touch of honey or maple syrup replaces refined sugar, keeping the sweetness gentle and natural.

Fresh or frozen blueberries work equally well in this recipe, bursting into pockets of fruity goodness with every bite. If using frozen, just toss them in a little flour before folding them into the batter to prevent streaking.

The real beauty of this recipe is its versatility. You can mix in a handful of chopped nuts for crunch, sprinkle oats on top for a rustic look, or even add lemon zest to brighten the flavor. They bake up tall with golden tops, and the inside stays tender without feeling overly rich or heavy.

These muffins are great for meal prep, make a batch on Sunday and you’ve got grab-and-go breakfasts or afternoon pick-me-ups ready all week. Store them in an airtight container for up to four days, or freeze them and thaw as needed.

Whether you’re trying to make smarter choices or just love a good muffin, this recipe gives you all the classic flavor and texture you crave, without the sugar crash. They’re perfect for kids, easy to pack in lunchboxes, and taste just as good with coffee as they do with almond milk.

So if you’re looking for a muffin that’s equal parts wholesome and delicious, give these healthy blueberry muffins a try. You might just find they’re your new favorite way to start the day.

I was a bit skeptical at first but they turned out alright. Not as sweet as normal muffins, though.

I’m confused, can I sub almond milk with real milk? Also, why coconut oil? Can’t I use butter??

Passed the test! My kids loved these muffins, and that’s saying something. They usually refuse anything healthy!

That’s awesome! Kids can be so picky, so this is a huge win! 🥳

    2. User avatar remona.schamberger80 says:

      3 stars
Are you sure they really liked them? My kids wouldn’t touch anything whole wheat! 🤔

  4. User avatar mertie.prohaska says:

Easy recipe. Also, who needs sugar? I ate two warm—couldn’t help it. 👌

    1. User avatar wei.barrows97 says:

      5 stars
Haha I feel you—if they come out warm and fragrant, it’s basically impossible to resist 😄 Also the honey in these is already sweet enough, so the “who needs sugar” vibe checks out!

  5. 4 stars
They rose nicely and the blueberry flavor actually came through. Only thing: I needed like 27 minutes to get the centers fully done.

  6. User avatar sam.champlin says:

I substituted honey with maple syrup because I ran out, and they still taste great!

    1. 2 stars
Maple syrup? Isn’t that basically sugar? I thought honey was healthier…

    2. User avatar bev.johnson1979 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! I love maple syrup, I might try that substitution too.

  7. User avatar Loonquawl and Phouchg says:

These muffins are so good! I love that they are healthy too. Will make again!

  8. User avatar birdie.larson says:

These muffins are fantastic! My kids devoured them in minutes.

I’m not sure about the honey instead of sugar. Seems weird. Can you really use that much honey?

    1. User avatar gaston.borer46 says:

      5 stars
I thought the same thing at first, but honey is a natural sweetener and works great in muffins! Trust me, it’s delicious! 🍯

    2. 2 stars
Not sure about the honey, though. Seems like a lot! Sugar is just easier to use, don’t you think? 🤔

  11. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    5 stars
Yummy! Just added some walnuts for crunch. Delish!

    1. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

      5 stars
I’ve never thought of adding walnuts, that sounds great! Can’t wait to try it like that! 🍏

  12. User avatar joseph.kreiger says:

    4 stars
Super easy and the steps are clear. I used a silicone muffin tray so I didn’t grease much, and they came out fine.

  13. 1 star
Worst recipe ever! My honey is not “honey” it was maple syrup and everything collapsed. But idk maybe it was my fault lol

  14. 2 stars
I followed the recipe, but mine came out too dry. What did I do wrong? Maybe it was the almond milk? 🤔

    1. User avatar garland.reichel says:

      3 stars
I think it’s the almond milk! It’s so watery sometimes. I just use regular milk instead.

    2. 4 stars
Maybe try adding a bit more almond milk next time or check if your oven runs hot! 🤷‍♀️

  15. User avatar fidel.dickinson1969 says:

    2 stars
5 minutes mixing is not enough lol. I think I needed to fold more gently because some blueberries burst and stained everything.

    1. 5 stars
lol yeah blueberries do that if you overwork the batter. Folding just until you don’t see dry flour is the move—next time try mixing the wet/dry a bit less too.

  16. User avatar ramiro.abshire2 says:

    4 stars
I substituted coconut oil for butter since that’s all I had. They turned out great!

  17. User avatar faustino.schmeler94 says:

    4 stars
Made these for my kids and they gobbled them up! Definitely a win in our house! 😊

  18. 4 stars
    Yum 😋

  19. User avatar jadwiga.bosco46 says:

    2 stars
Meh, just okay. I’ve had better muffins. 😐

  20. User avatar Mr. Betsy Champlin says:

    4 stars
I used regular milk instead of almond milk and they still came out great! 🤷‍♀️

  21. User avatar candi.prohaska says:

    3 stars
They turned out a bit dry for me. I might add more almond milk next time.

  22. User avatar dennise.russel says:

    3 stars
I substituted the honey with sugar and they turned out fine! But I think honey does make them healthier.

  23. User avatar hosea.vandervort90 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! I think 2 cups whole wheat flour is a bit much though—mine turned out slightly dense. Next time I’ll try a mix of whole wheat and all-purpose.

  24. User avatar consuelo.schamberger2017 says:

    3 stars
Muffins were okay, but I think I prefer cupcakes. What’s the diff?

  25. 1 star
Healthy smelthy! Muffins are muffins 🤷. I enjoyed eating them but will just stick to store-bought next time.

    1. User avatar evan.langosh54 says:

      4 stars
You should give them another try! Fresh muffins are worth it! Store-bought are so dry sometimes.

  26. User avatar eloy.leuschke says:

    4 stars
Yummy! But I wish I could taste the cinnamon more. Also, who knew healthy could be this good!

  27. User avatar ok.armstrong2021 says:

    3 stars
Can you use frozen blueberries? I only have those on hand.

  28. User avatar Frodo Baggins says:

    4 stars
I was really skeptical about using honey instead of sugar, but these turned out great! The kids loved them too.

    1. User avatar Android 19 says:

      5 stars
So glad to hear that! Honey really does add a nice flavor. What kind of blueberries did you use?

    2. User avatar casey.ward34 says:

      3 stars
I dunno about honey. Is it really better than sugar? I thought it was sweeter but maybe not.

  29. 3 stars
Not my fave. The almond milk made them kinda weird… Prefer regular milk for muffins next time.

    1. User avatar ulysses.gislason says:

      3 stars
I dunno, I like the almond milk flavor. But I guess everyone has their own preference. Regular milk is more traditional tho!

    2. User avatar cornelius.moen73 says:

      4 stars
I totally understand! Almond milk can be a bit different in taste. Maybe try oat milk next time? It might work better! 😊

  30. User avatar kam.johnson17 says:

    3 stars
I don’t like blueberries, can I substitute with chocolate chips? Asking for a friend. 😂

  31. User avatar romeo.ondricka says:

    3 stars
The flavor is good, but mine stuck to the tin even though I greased it. Next time I’ll use paper liners.

    1. User avatar allie.hills says:

      5 stars
Ugh, that’s annoying—sorry they stuck! I’ve had that happen with muffins even when I grease. Paper liners or a nonstick spray with flour dusting helped me a lot.

    2. User avatar coleen.cole1998 says:

      3 stars
Mine don’t stick like that. Are you cooling them longer? I usually let them rest in the pan like 10 minutes, then pop them out. Greasing should work if it’s enough—maybe your coconut oil was too thin?

  32. User avatar antone.konopelski2017 says:

    5 stars
These muffins are so delicious! I made them for breakfast and they were a hit with my kids!

    1. User avatar manual.mckenzie says:

      3 stars
Idk about healthy, aren’t muffins just cake? But I might try making them anyway, just to see!

    2. User avatar mervin.kuhn0 says:

      5 stars
I’m glad to hear they were a hit! My kids loved them too, but I added some chocolate chips for extra sweetness!

  33. User avatar marcia.pfannerstill42 says:

    1 star
Healthy? More like a cardboard brick! Sorry but I didn’t enjoy these at all. Will stick to my sugary muffins!

  34. User avatar stephenie.wisoky54 says:

    2 stars
Did anyone else have trouble mixing because the coconut oil solidifies? I warmed it again and fixed it, but that part was annoying.

    1. User avatar Draugr Wight says:

      5 stars
No problems on my end—maybe y’all didn’t warm the coconut oil enough? I just keep it melted until the moment I mix and it seems fine. Delicious muffins btw.

    2. User avatar gertrude.terry38 says:

      4 stars
Yes!! Mine seized up too because the coconut oil wasn’t fully liquid when I poured it. I ended up microwaving it in 10-second bursts and it mixed way better—still kinda annoying though.

  35. User avatar elsa.haley2004 says:

    1 star
    Muffins.

  36. User avatar Dwight McGlynn says:

    5 stars
These muffins are amazing! So moist and flavorful. I added some walnuts for extra crunch. Definitely making them again!

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! These muffins are my weekend go-to now. Love the added walnuts for a nice crunch!

  37. 5 stars
These came out super fluffy for whole wheat! The honey + cinnamon combo is really nice, and the blueberries stayed juicy.

  38. 4 stars
Good idea, but my batter was kinda thick even after mixing. I ended up adding a splash more almond milk and that fixed it. Still tastes great—less sweet than I expected though.

  39. User avatar Madam MeowMeow says:

    3 stars
The texture was kinda weird, not fluffy like I expected. Maybe I did something wrong?

  40. User avatar miesha.kemmer says:

    5 stars
Great recipe! My only tip: add a little lemon zest for a pop of flavor! Yummy!

    1. 5 stars
I love the idea of adding lemon zest! It would really brighten up the flavor. Gonna try it next time!

    2. User avatar Alia Atreides says:

      2 stars
Lemon zest? That seems weird, doesn’t it? These muffins should be sweet, not tart! I think I’ll stick to the recipe as is.

  41. User avatar jeffrey.schamberger97 says:

    2 stars
I don’t think these muffins are as good as regular ones. Whole wheat kinda changes the texture, don’t ya think? I prefer the classic white flour version.

  42. User avatar Zaphod Beeblebrox says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, mine sank in the middle. Followed directions but maybe my baking powder was old? Also my coconut oil seized because the almond milk was cold—still baked, but won’t be my first pick.

  43. User avatar Frankie and Benjy says:

    2 stars
These are healthy… but kind of dry. I pulled them a few minutes early but maybe my oven runs hot. Will try again with less baking time and maybe cover them loosely.

  44. User avatar Barry Manilow says:

    3 stars
I followed the steps but my batter was kinda thick and the muffins spread weird. Still tasted good, just not pretty.

  45. 1 star
    Muffins.

  46. User avatar dannette.wilkinson says:

    5 stars
These muffins are amazing! So fluffy and delicious! Can’t believe they’re healthy!

  47. User avatar lorriane.schmidt62 says:

    4 stars
Pretty easy and not overly sweet. I used frozen blueberries (didn’t thaw) and baked 2 extra minutes; still turned out great. Would make again.

  48. User avatar shonna.reynolds62 says:

    4 stars
Baked these today. They smell amazing! Only had 1 cup blueberries, so I added some crushed banana. Yummy!!!

    1. User avatar reyes.krajcik says:

      5 stars
That sounds delicious! Adding banana is a great idea. I might try that next time!

  49. User avatar alvera.gaylord says:

    2 stars
Not sure if I believe these are healthy. Sugar is sugar, right? Anyway, they were good, but I think I prefer my usual recipe.

    1. User avatar mac.gottlieb89 says:

      3 stars
Yeah, but honey is still sugar! Not sure how that’s better lol. Glad you liked them though.

    2. 4 stars
I get where you’re coming from, but using honey instead of sugar makes it a bit healthier. Just my opinion, but I think they turned out really well!

  50. 5 stars
I used frozen blueberries and tossed them lightly in flour first, worked great. Also, I didn’t have coconut oil so I used butter—still good. 10/10 snack.

  51. User avatar daria.kilback1974 says:

    5 stars
These muffins are fantastic! So moist and flavorful. I added a bit of lemon zest for an extra kick. 5 stars!

  52. User avatar Cornelius Bahringer says:

    4 stars
My first time baking muffins, and they came out fantastic! Following the recipe exactly really paid off. Thanks!

  53. User avatar mel.reilly2025 says:

    5 stars
    YUMMY!

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! These muffins are the best! Love how healthy they are too!

  54. 2 stars
I tried these but they turned out too dry. Maybe I added too much flour? Not sure I’ll make again.

  55. 4 stars
I used frozen blueberries and it worked! Just toss them in a little flour first and don’t overmix.

  56. User avatar jill.willms99 says:

    2 stars
I tried making these for the first time and they came out really dry. Maybe I overmixed? Anyway, not what I expected.

    1. User avatar rigoberto.stehr says:

      3 stars
Or maybe your oven is too hot? Mine bakes things faster than the recipe says. Just a thought. But keep trying! Muffins should be yummy!

    2. User avatar leah.douglas says:

      4 stars
It sounds like you might’ve mixed too long. It’s important to just combine, not overdo it! I’ve made these muffins a bunch and they always turn out moist when I do that. Don’t give up, you’ll nail it next time!

  57. User avatar Oolon Colluphid says:

    5 stars
These muffins are amazing! I used agave instead of honey and they turned out great. My kids loved them! 🍇

  58. User avatar milo.wintheiser says:

    2 stars
I think I might have messed up the baking powder. They didn’t rise much 😕. Followed the recipe but didn’t check the date on the powder!

  59. User avatar ozzie.murazik80 says:

    3 stars
Healthy? maybe. But whole wheat muffins always feel a little like breakfast bricks 😅 Still, the taste is decent and the crumble top was nice.

  60. 2 stars
Do these really taste good? I mean, no sugar at all? Sounds sus.
