There’s something irresistible about crispy fried calamari paired with a cool, refreshing dip. When you add tzatziki, the creamy, tangy cucumber yogurt sauce that’s a staple of Greek cuisine, the combination becomes a Mediterranean-inspired appetizer you’ll crave again and again.
The calamari is the star of this dish – tender, lightly battered, and golden brown, with just the right amount of crunch. The key to perfect fried calamari is in the batter: light, crispy, and seasoned with just enough salt and pepper to complement the sweet, delicate flavor of the squid. When fried to perfection, each piece is a satisfying contrast of crispy exterior and tender interior.
What really makes this dish special is the tzatziki. The cool, creamy yogurt is balanced with the freshness of cucumber, a touch of garlic, and a hint of lemon, making it the perfect dip to cut through the richness of the fried calamari. The tangy flavors of the tzatziki pair beautifully with the calamari, enhancing its natural sweetness while adding a burst of freshness.
This dish is perfect as an appetizer for a Mediterranean meal or as a light main course. It’s ideal for summer gatherings or cozy evenings at home when you want something flavorful but not too heavy. The crispy calamari and creamy tzatziki are also perfect for sharing, making it a crowd-pleaser at dinner parties or casual get-togethers.
You can elevate this dish by serving it with a side of fresh greens or a lemon wedge for an extra burst of flavor. For those who love a bit of heat, a drizzle of hot sauce or a sprinkle of paprika can add an extra kick.

- Enjoy!
I don’t get why people like calamari. It’s just chewy rings!
I totally get what you mean! Calamari can be a bit weird, but it’s all about the sauce. Tzatziki makes it so much better!
Chewy rings? More like delicious bites! It’s just a matter of taste. You might not like seafood at all, huh?
Is it supposed to be soggy? Mine didn’t turn out right at all.
Fried calamari is like the best! Tzatziki is the perfect dip. 👍
Great recipe! I added some chili flakes and it gave it an extra kick. Sooooo good!
This is good but I think 1 cup flour is too much for 1 pound? Mine felt thick and heavy. Maybe it’s just my cutting thickness.
Question: do you really need cayenne? I used extra black pepper instead and it still tasted great. I feel like cayenne would overpower the calamari.
I dunno, I found the calamari chewy and the seasoning a bit off. Maybe I did something wrong, but I won’t be making it again.
Made this last night—so crispy! I also patted the calamari extra dry before dredging and it really helped. Tzatziki is super fresh.
Call me skeptical, but frying calamari for only 2-3 minutes seems too short. I expected it to be rubbery, but surprisingly it was fine.
Took me back to my trip to Greece! I could eat this every day. Thanks for sharing the recipe!
Cornmeal + flour combo is a nice touch. Mine browned a bit faster than 2-3 minutes, so I’d say keep an eye on it. Tzatziki came out great—my garlic level was spot on.
Why do people eat squid? It’s gross! Can’t believe anyone would like this.
I used instant cornmeal? idk it was whatever I had and it was crunchy but weirdly gritty. Could be my fault. Sauce still good.
This was so good! The calamari came out perfectly crispy. The tzatziki added a nice cooling effect. Will definitely make again! 😋
Simple and delicious! My family loved it. I added some extra garlic in the dip for flavor. Yum!
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Extra garlic is always a great idea for flavor. What do you think about maybe adding a bit of lemon zest next time?
Soo good! My kids loved it, and they usually hate seafood! It’s a win! 🥳
Seems too simple? I followed it exactly and mine was kind of bland. I forgot to squeeze the cucumber enough (oops) so the tzatziki was watery. Flavor improved with more dill and pepper.
That definitely tracks—tzatziki can get watery fast if the cucumber isn’t squeezed dry. I’ve started salting the grated cucumber too and pressing it again with paper towels.
I don’t know about this recipe. Is there a reason the calamari is sliced? Whole ones taste better
Nah, sliced is better for frying! Whole ones take longer and can be rubbery. This recipe sounds good to me!
I get what you’re saying! Whole calamari definitely have a richer flavor, but sliced ones cook faster and get crispy better. It’s a trade-off! 🦑
I tried this, but the calamari turned out so chewy! What am I doing wrong? 😕
I love calamari but never made it myself. This recipe was simple and satisfying!
I used frozen calamari and it worked well! The flour mix was great, thanks!
Frozen? Really? Isn’t that supposed to be worse than fresh? I don’t know if I trust it.
I’m glad to hear that! Frozen calamari can be a real lifesaver. I’m definitely going to try your tip about the flour mix!
Just made it for my friends. Everyone went back for seconds. The sauce was so cooling with the fried stuff—like restaurant quality. 10/10 would make again.
Love hearing this! Crispy calamari + that cool tzatziki combo is *the* move. Going to try it for my next get-together too.
Restaurant quality is a big claim 😄 but I can totally see how the chilled yogurt sauce would cut the richness. What did you use for frying depth—like a pot or skillet?
This is how you cook calamari? Never woulda thought! My kids loved it, thanks 📅!
Could you really fry calamari for only 2-3 minutes? Mine went rubbery fast, so I’m guessing oil temp matters a lot. Still tasty though.
Tzatziki sauce was too garlicky for my taste. Maybe just a little garlic next time.
The tzatziki came out watery until I squeezed the cucumber. Lesson learned: squeeze until your arm hurts lol.
Omg yes—squeezing the cucumber is the whole game. I don’t even trust it until it’s dry enough to stop dripping 😂 Great tip!
Mine was watery too at first… I kinda just patted it with paper towel though, not enough. Next time I’ll squeeze more. Also is 1/2 cucumber the same as a whole cucumber half? Might matter.
Pretty good, but my calamari turned rubbery after a minute longer than stated. Next time I’ll stick to the 2–3 mins and fry smaller batches.
This calamari was a total hit at my dinner party! Super crispy and the tzatziki was the perfect dip. Will definitely make it again!
Yum! I love calamari, but I can’t use tzatziki. Dairy doesn’t sit well with me. 😢 Any suggestions for a dip?
I tried this recipe too, but my calamari turned out chewy. I think I overcooked it. 🤦♂️ But the tzatziki is delicious!
The frying was so quick! 2-3 min was right on. I’m just glad I didn’t burn it, phew!
Made this last night and it was super crispy. I squeezed the cucumber well (like the recipe says) and the tzatziki wasn’t watery at all. The cayenne gives a nice little kick too.
Absolutely delicious! Made it for my family and they loved it!
Really? I tried it and it turned out a bit soggy, not sure what I did wrong.
So glad to hear it! It’s always a hit with family. What did you serve it with?
Yum! The frying part is scary but worth it. I just used a pot instead of a skillet.
Not gonna lie, I forgot to shake off excess flour and it clumped a bit. Flavor was good, but the coating didn’t stay as crisp as I wanted.
Oof, I feel that—clumps happen if the calamari goes in with too much flour stuck to it. I usually do a quick shake + let the rings sit 30 seconds so the coating evens out. Glad the flavor still came through though!
The ingredients are too Americanized. Should’ve used more Mediterranean flavors. I’m from Greece, trust me.
This is kinda basic. Flour + cornmeal + oil… I guess it’s fine, but where’s the Italian grandma magic?
Five stars! My whole family devoured it. Also the tzatziki is legit—fresh dill + lemon is the best combo. Wouldn’t change a thing.
Tzatziki is great but how can you call that calamari?! It was burnt on the outside and raw inside. Disappointed.
I feel you! It’s super annoying when food is not cooked right. Maybe the oil was too hot? Happen to me once too!
I don’t think it was burnt, but could have been better. Did you follow the recipe exactly?
This calamari recipe is fantastic! The tzatziki sauce adds the perfect touch. Highly recommend!
I tried this recipe and it was sooo good! The tzatziki made it extra special! Will make again for sure!
I don’t know, fried calamari can be kinda chewy. Is the tzatziki really that great? Not convinced.
Way too spicy for me! I don’t think cayenne is necessary. 🤢
How many calories in this? My diet says no fried food.
I tried it with squid that was already pre-cleaned and sliced—worked, but I think that matters a lot. Also, don’t overcrowd the pan or it steams.
The spice mix (paprika + cayenne) was on point. I served it with lemon wedges and it tasted like a restaurant appetizer. Wouldn’t change much.
Yum! Tzatziki is cool. Should I add extra garlic? I love garlic!
Finally, a fried calamari recipe that doesn’t overcomplicate things. The tzatziki was fresh and tangy—perfect with the crisp rings. I squeezed the cucumber extra well and it really helped.
Yes! The simplicity is exactly what I was looking for. I also squeeze the cucumber super well and it makes a huge difference—nice call-out.
Is calamari even real seafood? I never see it in the ocean. lol
Calamari is definitely seafood! It’s squid, and it lives in the ocean. Maybe you just haven’t looked hard enough. 😂
I messed up and used regular yogurt instead of Greek. Still tasty, but the tzatziki was way thinner. Lesson learned.
Are you supposed to eat the skin? I just want to know.
I messed up and didn’t squeeze the cucumber enough, so my sauce was watery. Still tasted good though—just looked like soup on a plate lol. Lesson learned.
Oof lol but honestly “soup on a plate” made me laugh 😅 Next time just squeeze that cucumber like you mean it—maybe even let it sit in a strainer for 5–10 min first. Your sauce still tasting good is the best sign though!
Simple ingredients. Easy to make. Fried/cal dripped oil everywhere, but worth it in the end.
I tried this but my calamari turned out rubbery. Maybe I overcooked it. Any tips?
Overcooked is usually the culprit. Try frying for just 1-2 mins next time! Keep ’em golden, not chewy! 😊
I had the same issue once! Maybe try tempura batter instead of flour? It could help!
Meh… mine weren’t golden brown until like 6 minutes, and the breading fell off a bit. Could be my oil temp though.
Eh, I think fried food just isn’t my thing. The sauce was good though. Just maybe bake them next time?
I get what you mean. Baking could work, but it won’t be the same crunch! Love the sauce too, though!
Fried food is the best! But I guess baking is healthier. Still, nothing beats that crispy fry! 🤤
I followed the recipe but mine came out rubbery. Maybe I overcooked them?
Rubbery? Yikes! Maybe a shorter frying time next time? I always do 1.5 minutes.
Never made calamari before, but this recipe was easy to follow. Just made a mess in my kitchen haha!
Pretty good, but my calamari got a little chewy because I probably over-fried it. Next time I’ll stick closer to 2 minutes. Sauce was great though.
I was skeptical about frying squid, but this recipe proved me wrong. Best calamari ever! Thanks for sharing!
Huh, never thought to mix cornmeal with flour, interesting. But ain’t all fried food the same? 😂
Easy peasy! My kids gobbled it all up! Can’t please them with veggies, but this they loved.
The spice combo is great. I added a squeeze of extra lemon to the sauce and it tasted like a restaurant appetizer. 10/10.
Fried calamari? Ain’t that from Italy? I thought it was a Greek dish, haha. Still, tastes great!
I thought it was Italian too! But who cares, it tastes good no matter where it’s from!
It’s actually popular in both Greece and Italy! I love it with tzatziki. Perfect combo!
The tzatziki was the star for me. I squeezed the cucumber like the instructions said (way more than usual) and it didn’t get watery. Big win.
Fried food isn’t my thing, but my friends loved it. They said it was way better than the stuff from the restaurant.
This is going to sound picky, but 1 cup flour + 1/2 cup cornmeal felt too dry when I dipped. I had to lightly shake off and it still clumped a little. Flavor was good regardless.
I totally get the “picky” thing—if it clumped, I wonder if your calamari was a bit too wet (or not patted dry enough). Maybe try a quick pat with paper towels and let it sit 2 minutes before dipping.
The flour/cornmeal mix can feel dry if the rings aren’t super dry. Next time, add a tiny splash of water to the bowl (like 1 tbsp total) or do a light flour coating then a second quick dip—should help it stick and crisp.
You forgot to mention how deep the oil should be! My calamari got stuck to the pot. What a mess!
I had the same issue! Oil depth really makes a difference. Next time, I’m gonna make sure it’s deep enough!
Fried calamari is my fave! But I think it need more seasoning, maybe chili powder? 🤔
Easy peasy! The ingredients are simple, and it’s so quick to make.
Totally agree! I tried it last night and it was delicious. The tzatziki is a game changer!
Looks easy, but I always mess up frying. My calamari turns out rubbery. Any tips?
Not gonna lie, 2-3 minutes felt too short for my pan—mine came out a little pale. But flavor was solid and the sauce saved it.
Totally agree—2-3 minutes was fast for my pan too. I did like 3-4 and got way better color. The tzatziki definitely pulls the whole thing together.
Fried squid? Really? I thought it was just for fancy restaurants. Tried this at home and wow, it’s not hard at all!
Fried squid? Just seems messy and kinda gross to me honestly. I prefer eating it at a restaurant. Too much work for a snack!
Wow, I never thought I could make this at home either! Your post inspired me to try, and it turned out great! Thank you!
This is delicious but kinda messy. Also I thought calamari should taste fishier—mine tasted mild. Maybe mine was frozen?
So glad you liked it! Mine gets messy too if the oil isn’t hot enough—can you check you’re frying at a steady medium-high and not crowding the pan? As for the flavor, calamari can taste pretty mild unless it’s very fresh.
I used frozen calamari and it was completely different. Not crispy, kinda soggy. I guess fresh is best!
This was absolutely delicious! The calamari turned out perfectly crispy. The tzatziki adds a nice cool touch. Will definitely make again!
Yum! But what if I used squid instead? Would it work? I love squid. This seems easy enough!
I tried making this but the calamari came out a bit chewy. What did I do wrong? Might’ve fried for too long?
Easy and quick to make! Will definitely make again.
Fried stuff is bad for health. Baking might be a better way tho.
I don’t like fishy stuff. I usually prefer sweet food. But my family loved it!
Calamari is just not my thing. I followed the recipe, but it tasted rubbery. Maybe I cooked it too long?
Nah, I don’t think you cooked it too long. It’s probably just the calamari from bad batch. Maybe next time, try some other seafood instead.
I totally get it. Calamari can be tricky. If it’s rubbery, maybe try cutting it in smaller rings next time or frying for a shorter time. It should be tender! Don’t give up!
I didn’t think frying calamari would be this easy. I was a bit skeptical about the cayenne pepper, but it really added a nice kick!
I’m so glad you gave it a try! The cayenne really does make a difference, doesn’t it? Sometimes simple recipes like this are the best! 😊
Delish!!! The sauce is everything! I just licked the bowl clean! 😂
Yum! I love tzatziki; I could eat it with anything. This combo is amazing!
Tzatziki is so yummy! Perfect with fried calamari, I agree! 😍
I love tzatziki but never thought about making it myself. Can I use sour cream instead of yogurt?
I used frozen calamari. Wasn’t as good, but still okay.
The sauce was too tangy for my taste. Not great.
I added some extra spices to the flour mix, and it was a hit at my party! Super easy to make and taste divine.
Sounds delicious! I love spicy food! What’s your secret spice mix?
The seasoning in the flour is legit. Paprika + cayenne gave it a subtle kick without tasting weird. Next time I’ll add lemon zest to the tzatziki too.
wow! these are so perfect for parties. Everyone loved them, even my picky cousin. 🐙
I’m glad they were a hit! Picky eaters can be tough, but this recipe is definitely a crowd-pleaser! 🎉
I followed it exactly and it was… fine. The calamari cooked fast but I couldn’t get it super crisp. Flavor is there though. Maybe my oil temp was low.
Ugh, “fine” is still better than soggy 😅. Low oil temp is definitely the culprit—try heating until it shimmers and then test with a tiny pinch of coating.
Absolutely delicious! The calamari turned out perfectly crispy and the tzatziki was refreshing. My family loved it!
Not sure about the cayenne amount—mine tasted a bit harsh, like too much peppery heat. I’d cut it in half for a more classic vibe.
I don’t know, my calamari ended up chewy. Maybe I overcooked it? Not sure if I followed the recipe right.
Best calamari ever! Will steal this recipe for future gatherings. Makes me feel like a pro chef!
I’m glad you liked it! Calamari can be tricky, but this recipe makes it so easy. What gathering are you planning to serve it at?
Just made this for a party and everyone loved it! Was a hit!
This was absolutely delicious! The calamari came out so crispy and the tzatziki was the perfect dip.
Not my favorite. The tzatziki was too watery, and I think I needed more salt.
So easy! Can I just buy pre-fried calamari? I’m lazy but still want that tzatziki. 😂
This was gross. The texture of calamari doesn’t sit right with me. Never again!
Absolutely delicious! The tzatziki made it extra special. Perfect for my dinner party!
Tried this last night—crispy rings and the tzatziki totally nailed that fresh, garlicky vibe. I added a squeeze more lemon and it was perfect.
My first batch was not golden at all… oil wasn’t hot enough. Once I cranked it up a bit, everything clicked. Great quick snack, would do again.
Yes!! That “oil wasn’t hot enough” part is *exactly* what trips people up. Glad you bumped the heat—golden + crispy is the goal. Thanks for sharing!
I used canned calamari once and it was awful, so I was nervous. With fresh rings it turned out way better—crispy outside, tender inside.
This recipe is awesome! The calamari turned out so crispy and delicious. The tzatziki is a perfect match! Will make it again!
calamari is scary lol. Also I forgot to squeeze the cucumber dry and my sauce got watery. Still tasted ok, but yeah—soggy tzatziki.
Haha calamari *is* kinda intimidating at first 😅 Your watery tzatziki fix is totally learnable though—squeezing the cucumber dry makes a huge difference.
The flavor balance is nice (paprika + cayenne gives it a little kick). I used dried dill since I didn’t have fresh—still worked.
Dried dill might be a downgrade though—fresh is way more aromatic. Also, 2-3 minutes sounds short; mine needs closer to 4 or it gets chewy.
Yes! Paprika + cayenne is such a good combo for calamari—glad the dried dill still worked too. I do the same when I’m out of fresh.
I followed it mostly, but my breading fell off a bit. Maybe the oil wasn’t hot enough? Still tasty though.
Worst idea ever 😅 The oil splattered like crazy and I burnt one batch. Tzatziki tasted okay but frying part was a mess.
This is why I’m nervous to fry at home 😅 Paper towel drain and lower heat would’ve saved you. Also batch size matters—crowding makes it go chaotic.
Ugh, sorry! Oil splatter is *so* real with calamari. I’ve found a deeper pot and slower heat helps a ton—also patting the rings extra dry before dredging.
I followed the instructions, but my calamari were a bit soggy. I think I need to fry them longer.
I used dried dill (cuz i didnt have fresh) and it tasted kinda flat. Still edible, but fresh dill really matters here.
Huh, i used dried dill once and it was fine? but maybe my dill was stronger. Either way, tzatziki needs salt/lemon to pop—did you taste and adjust before serving?
Good catch—dried dill definitely can taste flatter. Fresh has way more punch. Next time I’d use more dill (and maybe a tiny splash extra lemon) to wake it up.
This recipe is too complicated for my taste. Just buy the frozen ones, they are much easier!
What is tzatziki? Sounds fancy. Is it just like ranch? Anyway, fried stuff is good, I guess.
I subbed sour cream for the yogurt and it was still yummy! Easy to make too.
Easy peasy! My kids loved it! 🦑🎉
So glad to hear that! My kids also enjoy it. It’s fun to make! 🍽️
Not bad, kind of a fun twist. I’m not usually a calamari person though—texture felt chewy at first? Still tasty with the garlic yogurt sauce.
Tried this last night—so crispy once it hits the oil. I drained the rings really well and it helped a lot. The garlic yogurt + lemon/dill combo is legit.
I guess it’s ok, but my calamari stayed chewy too even though I fried it 4-5 min. Maybe my oil temp was wrong? Also I used dried dill and it tasted kinda meh. Still not terrible with the sauce though.
Mine turned out kinda rubbery… Guess I fried it too long? Still tasted alright but not what I was expecting.
Yum! So crispy! My kids devoured it. Will definitely make again!
So good! Will make again, I added more lemon juice and it tasted fresh and zesty!
Sounds good, but isn’t calamari kinda chewy? I don’t know if lemon can fix that. 🤔
I love how you made it your own with the extra lemon juice! It really does add that zesty kick! What other changes did you make?
Used shrimp instead of calamari. Not sure if that counts, but it was good! LOL.
I’m not a cook, but even I could do this. Simple and quick. Perfect for parties! 🎉
Wondering if this could work with shrimp instead? Anyone tried? 🤷♂️
Very bland! I added more spices to the flour and it helped. But still, kinda disappointed. Next time, I’m trying a different recipe.
Crispy and not too greasy! I sprinkled a little extra lemon right before serving and it really popped. The tzatziki was fresh and actually paired well with the spice.
I’m picky about calamari and this batter felt legit. I used rice flour mix (because I had it) and still worked. Sauce was super refreshing.
Wait… you used rice flour but called it “authentic”? 😂 Still, refreshing sauce sounds right. I always mess up frying time and end up with rubber rings.
As a fellow calamari-snob, I’m impressed you got a legit crunch. The rice flour substitution is a nice save—what’s your trick for keeping it from getting chewy?
So good. I used regular yogurt bc I didn’t have Greek, and it still worked. Only thing is I forgot to drain oil well—paper towels helped though!
I’ve done the same with regular yogurt and it turned out decent, but I always strain the cucumber like crazy. Paper towels are clutch. Next time do you think you’ll add a little extra lemon to balance?
Love hearing that—Greek yogurt vs regular makes a lot of difference, but it’s great you proved it still works! And yes, draining extra oil is half the battle for crispy calamari.
I dunno, I think I overcooked the calamari. It turned out chewy instead of crispy. Maybe I need to try again 🙁
Pretty tasty, but my calamari got a little chewy on the second batch. Next time I’ll keep a closer eye on the 2–3 minutes. Sauce was great though—garlic + dill is a win.
Glad you liked it! Yeah, calamari can go chewy fast—2–3 minutes is right, but I always pull one early and check. Garlic + dill tzatziki is definitely the star.
How can you call this Greek? Calamari is Italian! I prefer marinara though.
Actually, calamari is enjoyed in a lot of Mediterranean countries, not just Italy! And tzatziki is very Greek. Give it a try!
I tried this recipe and I think I overcooked them. Still tasted good tho!
I liked it, but mine got a bit uneven—some rings were darker than others. Next time I’ll fry in smaller batches and make sure the oil’s really hot.
My tzatziki got watery 😭 I didn’t squeeze the cucumber as dry as I should’ve. Still tasty though—would’ve been better with thicker cucumber.
Ahh that happens 😭 Waterig tzatziki is still super common—next time just grate, squeeze hard (even in a clean towel), and you’ll get it thicker. Glad it tasted good though!
So easy! I’m not a great cook but this recipe was super simple and the flavors were spot on. Will definitely make again!
Simple ingredients, and the result tasted like something you’d get at a beach place. I served it with lemon wedges and it was great.
Way too much oil! Just a little drizzle woulda been fine. 😡
So crispy! I followed the dredge exactly and the cayenne gives it a nice little kick. Tzatziki tasted fresh and not too sour.
Not really a fan of the taste. Calamari is kinda slimy, right? Didn’t meet my expectations.
I think calamari can be hit or miss! It’s definitely not for everyone, but I love the crispy texture. Maybe try it again in a different dish?
Tzatziki was great, but I think 1/2 cup cucumber might be too much unless you squeeze it really well. Mine watered down a little.
Yes! I had the same issue—my tzatziki got watery until I squeezed the cucumber like crazy. Next time I’ll squeeze for longer and maybe even pat with paper towels.
Great point. 1/2 cup cucumber sounds fine in theory, but depending on how juicy it is, it can absolutely water things down. I usually drain it and add the lemon a little at the end.
Idk about the cayenne—like, it’s fine but it overpowered the calamari a bit for me. Still decent, and the breading held up. Might do less spice next time.
This recipe is amazing! Fried calamari is my favorite and your tzatziki is perfect! Thank you!
This recipe is a hit! The calamari turned out crispy and the tzatziki was so refreshing!
I absolutely love calamari! I’m glad it turned out crispy for you, I’ll have to try this recipe. 😋
Are you sure about that? My last attempt was rubbery. Maybe I just did it wrong!
This recipe was a hit at my dinner party! The calamari turned out crispy and the tzatziki was sooo refreshing. Will definitely make again! 😊
Why do people even eat squid? It’s gross. How is this appealing? No thanks. 🤮
Tzatziki is always a win, and this one didn’t disappoint. Only thing: squeeze the cucumber REALLY dry, or it gets watery fast. Learned that the hard way.
