Dakos

September 3, 2023

If you’re dreaming of the sun-drenched Greek islands, let your taste buds lead the way with Dakos, a simple, rustic dish from the island of Crete. Also known as koukouvagia (meaning “owl”), dakos is a traditional Cretan meze that effortlessly brings together the bold flavors of the Mediterranean using just a few humble ingredients.

At its core, dakos is a barley rusk, known as paximadi, topped with juicy grated or chopped tomatoes, creamy crumbles of feta or mizithra cheese, a drizzle of olive oil, and a sprinkling of dried oregano. The rusk softens slightly from the tomato juices and olive oil, but still holds its crunch, creating a beautiful contrast of textures in every bite.

What makes dakos so special is the purity of its ingredients. There’s no need for fancy sauces or complex techniques. The beauty lies in the quality: sun-ripened tomatoes, fragrant extra virgin olive oil, and authentic Greek cheese. With a few olives on the side and perhaps a few capers or fresh herbs like thyme or basil, dakos becomes the centerpiece of a light lunch, appetizer spread, or even a refreshing dinner on a hot summer evening.

It’s also a fantastic choice for those looking for healthy Mediterranean options. Dakos is vegetarian, high in fiber thanks to the barley rusk, and rich in healthy fats from the olive oil. It’s satisfying without being heavy and makes you feel like you’re eating right from a seaside taverna.

If you can’t find traditional Cretan rusks, you can substitute with whole grain bread that’s been lightly toasted or dried, but the real deal offers a satisfying crunch that’s hard to beat. Serve it with a glass of chilled white wine or ouzo for the ultimate Greek experience.

So if you’re craving something fresh, flavorful, and unbelievably easy, dakos is the answer. It’s proof that sometimes the simplest dishes leave the strongest impression.

I’m not a fan of feta cheese… can I use cheddar instead?

I’ve never tried it with feta but it sounds good! I might give it a shot for my next BBQ.

Looks good but my feta was super dry and crumbly—couldn’t get that creamy layer. Next time I’ll buy better feta or let it sit a bit.

Good call—feta can vary a ton. If it’s dry/crumbly, I usually use a slightly softer feta (or let it sit at room temp) so it gives that creamier texture over the tomatoes and oil.

Tasted amazing, but my family didn’t like it… what do they know??

  6. 2 stars
I don’t know why people like this. Just bread with some tomatoes? Meh…

It’s a classic dish! The simplicity is what makes it great. It’s all about quality ingredients, not just the number of them. Give it another try! 😊

This tastes like a Greek salad that got dressed up. Feta everywhere. I used kalamata olives and it was perfect for a light lunch.

    1. 5 stars
Totally! Dakos is basically “Greek salad vibes” with the crunchy rusks—feta has to show up strong 😊 I’m glad Kalamata olives worked so well for you; they’re such a good fit.

Not gonna lie, I thought it would be bland, but the salt/pepper + capers combo saved it. Also oregano optional? Don’t skip it if you like herby vibes.

Really? This looks kinda basic. I’ve tried this and it was just ok. Maybe add some garlic?

Meh, it’s just bread and tomatoes, right? I don’t get the hype.

Tried this and it’s super fresh and bright. The feta really makes it—kinda like a Greek bruschetta without the fuss. I added capers and olives and it was perfect.

I thought rusks were for animals. How can people eat them? 🤔

Tasted good, but I used canned tomatoes instead. Not the same 🙁

  15. 3 stars
Uhhh… is Cretan rusk the same as normal bread? I’m confused.

Way too much olive oil in my opinion. I poured a drizzle like the instructions said and still felt greasy. Flavor was good, just needed less oil.

Meh… tasted kinda bland. I think it needs more spices? 🤷‍♂️

    1. 4 stars
I actually thought it was pretty good! Maybe try adding some chili flakes?

Nah, I disagree. Too many spices ruin the simplicity of the dish!

  18. 2 stars
I’m not a fan of feta, so I skipped it and it turned out bland. Maybe cheese is essential!

  19. 5 stars
YUM! Just made it and topped it with fresh herbs from my garden. So fresh!

I followed the recipe but forgot the capers. Still delicious though.
