Creamy Chicken in White Wine Sauce

March 5, 2025

Creamy chicken in white wine sauce is a comforting yet elegant dish that combines tender chicken with a rich, velvety sauce made from white wine, cream, and savory aromatics. The result is a dish that feels indulgent enough for special occasions but simple enough to prepare on a weeknight. The depth of flavor from the white wine and cream elevates the chicken, making it a standout meal that pairs beautifully with a side of pasta, rice, or roasted vegetables.

To prepare this dish, boneless chicken breasts or thighs are sautéed until golden brown and cooked through. The real magic happens when you deglaze the pan with white wine, which brings out all the caramelized bits of flavor that have stuck to the pan. A bit of garlic, shallots, and fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary are then added to deepen the flavors. Heavy cream is stirred in, creating a rich and smooth sauce that coats the chicken, infusing it with a luxurious, comforting texture.

The beauty of creamy chicken in white wine sauce is in its simplicity. The sauce’s balance of creaminess and acidity from the white wine creates a harmonious flavor that complements the chicken without overwhelming it. Whether you use Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, or a dry white wine, the subtle notes of the wine blend beautifully with the cream and herbs.

This dish is perfect for impressing guests at a dinner party or serving as a cozy, satisfying meal for your family. It pairs wonderfully with mashed potatoes, buttered noodles, or a fresh green salad. A sprinkle of fresh parsley or grated Parmesan cheese can add a final touch of color and flavor.

Rich, creamy, and full of depth, creamy chicken in white wine sauce is a go-to recipe that is sure to become a family favorite, offering both simplicity and sophistication in one plate.

This dish features tender chicken breasts cooked in a luxurious white wine sauce with cream, garlic, and herbs. It’s a perfect meal for any special occasion or a cozy night in.
Servings 4 people
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 chicken breasts skinless, boneless
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil for cooking
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 cup white wine such as Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc
  • 1 cup chicken broth low sodium
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme chopped

Instructions

  • Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper on both sides.
  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken breasts and sear until golden brown on both sides, about 5 minutes per side. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add the minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Pour in the white wine and deglaze the pan, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom.
  • Add the chicken broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let it cook for about 5 minutes to reduce slightly.
  • Stir in the heavy cream and fresh thyme. Return the chicken breasts to the skillet, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for another 10-15 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce has thickened.
  • Serve the chicken with the white wine sauce drizzled over the top. Garnish with additional fresh thyme if desired. Serve with pasta.

Made this tonight—super creamy and the pan deglazing step really nails the flavor. I served it with pasta and it tasted restaurant-level.

  2. 2 stars
White wine in the sauce is kinda weird to me. I used more broth and it was still good, but the “drizzle on top” presentation is too much effort 😅

    1. 4 stars
I feel you on the “drizzle” part 😅 I just spoon it over and call it a day. The wine makes it taste way more restaurant-y though—worth it.

Can I use almond milk instead of cream? I’m trying to be healthy…

    1. User avatar Peg Legge says:

      4 stars
I think almond milk is way too thin for this recipe. Stick to the cream for best results!

    2. User avatar antonia.jacobi2018 says:

      3 stars
Almond milk might make it a bit watery, though. Can you add more seasoning to make up for it?

Made this tonight—so creamy and the wine sauce is legit. I used Sauvignon Blanc and it tasted super restaurant-y. Would absolutely make again!

  5. User avatar Effrafax of Wug says:

    5 stars
Pretty easy and restaurant-style. I seared a bit longer for extra browning, then simmered the sauce until it coated the spoon.

Who even cooks with wine? Seems like a waste of good drink! I just used broth.

    1. User avatar Chronos says:

      2 stars
I dunno about that. Seems like a waste to me too! Just as good with broth or nothing.

    2. User avatar greg.purdy2025 says:

      4 stars
Wine really brings out the flavors though! Broth is good but it’s not the same. You should try it someday!

  7. User avatar albertine.kling says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and the sauce separated a bit when I reheated leftovers. Fresh cream next time? Not sure. Tasted okay regardless.

  8. 5 stars
OMG!!! This is the best chicken recipe!! I didn’t even need to garnish it. SO GOOD!

  9. User avatar elvia.dubuque12 says:

Yummy! My kids ate it all. I paired it with rice, worked great. Thanks for the recipe!

  10. 3 stars
Too much thyme for my taste, but overall not bad.

  11. 3 stars
I don’t know…I feel like it needed more flavor. Maybe more garlic?

    1. User avatar georgiann.gusikowski67 says:

      4 stars
I think garlic would definitely add a nice touch! Maybe some herbs too!

  12. User avatar ana.champlin says:

Honestly pretty easy to make. My kids even ate it, lol.

    1. User avatar carlo.buckridge1959 says:

      5 stars
Glad to hear your kids enjoyed it! It’s always a win when they eat what’s made. 👍

  13. 4 stars
I’m skeptical of “white wine” in weeknight chicken—usually it tastes weird. But honestly the deglazing + cream balance it out. Would make again.

  14. User avatar monet.beatty63 says:

    4 stars
The sauce came out great, but I had to simmer a bit longer than the instructions for it to thicken. Next time I’ll reduce more confidently.

    1. User avatar chantel.donnelly2021 says:

      4 stars
Interesting—mine thickened right on schedule. Maybe your broth was thinner or your heat was lower? Either way, next time try a bit more reduction before adding the cream.

    2. User avatar cecil.gorczany84 says:

      5 stars
Glad it worked for you! I’ve found white-wine sauces can be a little stubborn—simmering longer is usually the key. Reducing confidently is a good takeaway 👍

  15. User avatar muskrat says:

    3 stars
My chicken got a little dry. I think I seared too long on one side. Sauce saved it though—smooth and flavorful.

    1. 3 stars
I’ve done this and it was still dry 😬 maybe my wine was too strong? or the breasts were thick. The sauce is good but if you overcook even a little it’s done. Next time I’ll check internal temp for sure.

    2. User avatar robbyn.hackett49 says:

      4 stars
Totally get that—over-searing one side can dry chicken out fast. I’ve found cooking closer to ~4-5 min per side and not cranking the heat helps. Glad the white wine cream sauce saved it though!

  16. User avatar epifania.skiles says:

    2 stars
eh, it was okay. I forgot the thyme and the cream made it a bit heavy. Not my fav dish.

  17. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

    3 stars
I accidentally burnt the chicken. Still tasted fine though!

Chicken in white wine? That’s real gourmet, huh? 😂

  22. User avatar Loonquawl and Phouchg says:

Yum! Love the white wine in this recipe. So fancy!!

    1. 5 stars
I made this recipe last night, and it was a hit with my family! The wine adds such depth. Definitely a keeper! 🍷

  23. User avatar Rob McKenna says:

So creamy and delicious! My new go-to recipe for dinner!

    1. 5 stars
I tried it last night and it really was creamy! My family loved it too. Thanks for sharing! 😊

    2. User avatar margret.jerde55 says:

      2 stars
Sounds good but I don’t think wine in food is a good idea. What if kids eat it? And isn’t it a bit unhealthy? 🤔

  24. User avatar nicolasa.grimes99 says:

    4 stars
My sauce split slightly at first, but I whisked it while simmering and it came back together. Still delicious though.

  25. User avatar kassandra.douglas2008 says:

    3 stars
What is ‘deglaze’??? Can I skip that part? Asking for a friend.

  26. User avatar logan.muller21 says:

    2 stars
Why is white wine necessary? Can’t I just use water or something? Seems a bit fancy for chicken.

    1. User avatar cesar.yost2004 says:

      5 stars
White wine gives a depth of flavor that water just can’t match. It really makes a difference in the sauce!

    2. User avatar deedee.littel39 says:

      4 stars
Honestly, I think water would ruin it. Just try the recipe as is and you’ll understand why it’s there.

  27. User avatar theresa.wiza83 says:

    4 stars
No wine in my house, used chicken broth instead. Still good, but will try as intended next time.

  28. 4 stars
Pretty good, but mine took longer than the 10–15 minutes to cook through. Sauce turned out nice though—garlic flavor really comes through.

    1. User avatar Mel Practiss says:

      5 stars
Thanks! That’s good to know—mine always seems to run long too depending on the thickness. I’ll update my timing mindset to “cook through” rather than just 10–15.

    2. User avatar refugio.kutch51 says:

      4 stars
Huh, mine cooked way faster than that. Maybe your chicken was thicker? I also feel like 10-15 min is optimistic—unless it was thin-cut. Either way, garlic really does shine here 😅

  29. User avatar salina.zemlak85 says:

    2 stars
I used red wine instead and it didn’t taste right. Stick to white, folks!

  30. 3 stars
Tasted good, but I think I added too much garlic. It overpowered the wine flavor. Be careful!

  31. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it turned out super creamy and flavorful. The deglazing step really matters—those browned bits made the sauce taste fancy.

  32. User avatar jed.swift46 says:

    4 stars
This is kinda fancy for me 😅 but I’ll try it.

  33. User avatar errol.kohler87 says:

    5 stars
This was the best chicken dish I’ve ever made! The sauce was so creamy and flavorful. Will definitely make again!

  34. User avatar dominick.bartoletti2008 says:

    3 stars
Honestly? It was fine. The flavor is good, but mine came out a little thin even after simmering. Maybe I didn’t reduce long enough.

  35. User avatar lynn.harvey says:

    4 stars
Chicken breasts are so dry sometimes… but this kept them moist. I wouldn’t change the method, just maybe pound the chicken for even cooking.

  36. User avatar marvin.hintz1 says:

    2 stars
I think 1/2 cup wine is too much for my taste. Ended up with a stronger alcohol flavor before reducing more.

    1. User avatar deana.maggio says:

      4 stars
Hm maybe your heat was too low? If the wine isn’t cooking off, it’ll stay strong. I usually deglaze, then let it bubble for a few minutes until it smells sweeter, not sharp.

    2. User avatar Mark Spinka II says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—1/2 cup can absolutely taste boozy if it doesn’t reduce enough. Next time I’d simmer it a bit longer before adding the cream.

  37. User avatar claud.roberts63 says:

    5 stars
This was absolutely delicious! The sauce was so creamy and flavorful, loved it!

  38. User avatar Hershel Connelly says:

    4 stars
This is a solid weeknight dinner. I used Chardonnay and it tasted rich without being heavy. Only change: I added a pinch of red pepper flakes.

  39. User avatar Spriggan Matron says:

    5 stars
    Creamy chicken yum!

  40. User avatar dallas.swift81 says:

    5 stars
This is five stars. Super easy, and my whole family ate it in silence 😄

  41. 3 stars
This turned out tasty, but my sauce was a little thin even after simmering. I think I didn’t let it reduce enough. Still, the chicken stayed juicy.

  42. 3 stars
I don’t have fresh thyme so I used dried—still tasty, but it tasted a bit flatter. If you’re substituting, probably use more and maybe later in the simmer.

  43. User avatar mckinley.marquardt1974 says:

    2 stars
Not bad but meh. Also I forgot to garnish with thyme and now it’s in my soul as a mistake lol.

  44. User avatar keneth.larson73 says:

    2 stars
I think 5 minutes per side might be too long for my skillet—chicken was a little overdone. Flavor is decent though. Maybe lower heat?

  45. User avatar katharyn.flatley74 says:

    3 stars
Could’ve used more thyme—next time I’ll add a little extra. Otherwise good comfort food.

  46. User avatar emelda.dickens1970 says:

    4 stars
Ok but why do they say serve with pasta like it’s required 😅 I ate it with rice and it worked. Still creamy and good.

  47. User avatar rickey.jenkins46 says:

    3 stars
The instructions are clear, but my sauce didn’t thicken much. I think I under-reduced the broth and didn’t simmer low enough at the end.

  48. 2 stars
I tried this recipe but it didn’t come out right. The sauce was too thin and the chicken was dry.

    1. User avatar leif.rempel86 says:

      4 stars
Sorry to hear that! Did you adjust the heat properly? Maybe the sauce needs more cooking time to thicken.

  49. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    2 stars
I tried with cooking wine instead of Chardonnay/Sauvignon (because that’s what I had). It came out kinda sour, so I wouldn’t recommend that swap.

    1. User avatar cody.stracke says:

      5 stars
Ahhh that makes sense—cooking wine can be more acidic/salty and not nearly as mellow as Chardonnay/Sauvignon. Next time I’d try a dry white (even Pinot Grigio) and deglaze longer to cook off harshness.

    2. User avatar Sherman Wadd Evver says:

      3 stars
Wait, cooking wine vs real wine? I’ve done it a few times and mine was never sour… maybe you didn’t reduce enough or the cooking wine was too cheap/strong. What brand was it? Also did you measure the cream right?

  50. User avatar milly.pfeffer88 says:

    4 stars
The sauce thickened beautifully, but my chicken took closer to 18 minutes after reducing heat (thicker breasts). Still delicious though.

  51. User avatar Meriadoc Brandybuck says:

    4 stars
Easy peasy! I made this for dinner and everyone loved it! Will make again.

  52. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    3 stars
5 minutes per side then 10-15 simmer? My chicken was done sooner (thin breasts). I overcooked a tiny bit, but the flavor was still yummy. Also, who measures “fresh” thyme lol.

  53. User avatar armando.schulist says:

    3 stars
The instructions are clear, but my chicken took closer to 20 minutes to cook through. Maybe my skillet runs hot?

    1. User avatar myron.heaney12 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, that can definitely be skillet-dependent. If your pan runs hot or your breasts are thicker, timing gets weird—20 minutes doesn’t sound crazy at all. I usually go by internal temp instead of the clock: 165°F in the thickest part.

    2. 3 stars
Hmm maybe you overcooked the wine? Mine was done in 10 like the recipe says. Also medium-high sear then low simmer—if you keep it too high it’ll dry the chicken out, but if it’s too low it takes forever. Try covering the pan next time? 🤷

  54. User avatar Gaynelle Lubowitz says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about the white wine, but the deglazing step is key. The “browned bits” made a huge difference.

    1. User avatar cedrick.dickens71 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I’m glad you said the deglazing part—those browned bits are basically the whole flavor. I used Sauvignon Blanc and it turned out super creamy. Will definitely do this step every time.

  55. User avatar frankie.lindgren says:

    3 stars
Eh, the white wine taste was too strong for me, next time I’ll use less. But I did appreciate the creamy texture.

  56. 2 stars
Not my favorite. Sauce just sat there, chicken was fine but no wow factor.

  57. User avatar domonique.predovic1968 says:

    5 stars
I was worried the wine would be too strong, but it mellowed out nicely. Great with pasta like the recipe says. Will cook again.

  58. 4 stars
I’m not usually a “white wine” person in cooking, but the deglazing step is key. It adds a nice depth.

  59. User avatar lizzzard says:

    4 stars
Followed the steps exactly, except I used dried thyme (because that’s what I had). It was good, but not as fragrant as fresh—still delicious though.

  60. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, I messed up the order and cooked the garlic too long after adding wine. The sauce tasted kinda burnt/harsh for a minute, but once I added more broth it mellowed. Learned something!

  61. User avatar marilynn.stoltenberg2022 says:

    3 stars
Okay but why white wine?? I used what I had (Sauvignon Blanc) and it was still good, just a little sharp at first—should’ve reduced longer.

  62. User avatar geoWizard says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight—so creamy and the wine sauce is legit. I used Sauvignon Blanc and it turned out perfectly.

  63. User avatar franklin.glover says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it was genuinely restaurant-level. The sauce thickened nicely and the thyme really came through. I served it with pasta like suggested—perfect combo.

  64. User avatar erna.rutherford5 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid and easy. I used Sauvignon Blanc and the flavor was great, not too boozy. Next time I’ll probably reduce the wine a hair longer for extra richness.

    1. User avatar elmo.stiedemann says:

      5 stars
Agree—this is super easy and the wine flavor doesn’t take over. I also used Sauvignon Blanc and it turned out really nice. I like your tip about reducing a bit longer for more richness.

  65. 5 stars
I followed it exactly and it was delicious. Next time I’ll add a little more thyme (or maybe some butter) because I love strong herby flavors.
