Cranberry Apple Quinoa Salad

December 19, 2024

Cranberry apple quinoa salad is a vibrant and refreshing dish that combines the nutty goodness of quinoa with the crisp, tart flavors of apples and cranberries. It’s a perfect balance of sweet, savory, and tangy flavors, making it a delightful side dish for any meal, especially during the fall and holiday seasons.

The base of this salad is quinoa, a versatile and protein-packed grain that adds a light, fluffy texture. Quinoa is not only gluten-free but also rich in essential nutrients, making it a healthy foundation for the salad. After cooking the quinoa, it’s fluffed and allowed to cool slightly, giving it the perfect texture to absorb the other ingredients.

The stars of this salad are the fresh apples and cranberries. Crisp apples, like Gala or Honeycrisp, bring a sweet crunch, while dried cranberries add a tangy bite. The sweetness of the apples pairs wonderfully with the tartness of the cranberries, creating a perfect contrast to the nutty quinoa. Chopped pecans or walnuts can be added for a bit of crunch, giving the salad extra texture and a hint of toasted flavor.

To bring everything together, a light and tangy vinaigrette is drizzled over the salad. The dressing is usually made with olive oil, apple cider vinegar, a touch of honey or maple syrup, and a bit of Dijon mustard. This simple vinaigrette complements the natural sweetness of the fruit while providing a zesty contrast to the earthiness of the quinoa.

This cranberry apple quinoa salad can be served warm, at room temperature, or chilled, making it a versatile dish for any occasion. It’s perfect for Thanksgiving, holiday dinners, or as a refreshing side for grilled meats or roasted vegetables. The bright colors and bold flavors make it as visually appealing as it is delicious. With its combination of seasonal ingredients and healthy quinoa, this salad is a tasty and nourishing addition to any meal.

How do u get quinoa to not be crunchy? Mine turned out weird. Maybe too much water?

I followed it mostly but my apples went kinda mushy. Next time I’ll dice smaller? or add them later.

I thought this was boring and tasteless. Never again!

Super easy and honestly feels fancy for how little effort it is. Toasted walnuts made a big difference.

  10. User avatar zula.harvey1972 says:

Mmm, the crunchy walnuts are a nice touch. Super healthy choice!

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! Walnuts add such a nice crunch. Love this salad!

Healthy? Maybe, but sounds kinda messy and hard to make for a salad. Who wants to cook quinoa? 😕

  11. 5 stars
Tried this for lunch and it actually felt fancy without being hard. The sweet-tart combo from cranberries + vinegar is perfect.

  12. User avatar kristine.johnson93 says:

    3 stars
I like the cranberries but why add honey? Isn’t it sweet enough?

    1. 5 stars
I think the honey adds a nice balance to the tartness of the cranberries. It’s just a little sweetness to enhance the flavors! 😊

    2. User avatar mohammad.zieme2006 says:

      2 stars
But honey makes it sweet? Why not just skip it? Seems pointless to me. 🤷‍♂️

  13. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, quinoa salads sometimes feel kinda bland to me, but this one had personality. Tart cranberries cut through the sweetness nicely. Great texture with the toasted nuts too.

    1. 4 stars
I always thought quinoa needed something super heavy to taste good. But the honey + vinegar thing might actually fix it. Do you serve it cold cold or just like… room temp? Also, do you toast the walnuts in a dry pan?

    2. User avatar tyisha.mccullough53 says:

      5 stars
Totally get what you mean about quinoa salads being bland—this combo sounds way more interesting. Cranberry + cider vinegar is such a good “pop.” I’m adding this to my rotation.

  14. User avatar richard.corwin says:

    5 stars
The vinaigrette ratio looks spot on. I added a little extra pepper and it really woke everything up.

  15. User avatar earlean.bayer says:

    2 stars
I tried it but it was a bit bland for my taste. I added some spices but still didn’t click. Wouldn’t make again.

    1. User avatar geoWizard says:

      4 stars
I totally get that! It’s definitely on the lighter side. Maybe try adding some feta or chicken next time? That might give it more flavor!

  16. 4 stars
Wow, this is really refreshing! Perfect for summer picnics. I added some feta cheese on top for an extra kick!

  17. User avatar roosevelt.schumm says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why everyone loves quinoa. This salad was too bland for me. Could use more flavor.

    1. User avatar taylor.paucek38 says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you’re saying! Quinoa can be kinda bland if you don’t spice it up. Maybe add some feta cheese or a little garlic next time?

  18. User avatar tracey.schultz says:

    5 stars
This salad was super tasty! The quinoa blends well with the apples. Definitely making it again.

  19. User avatar denny.hand82 says:

This salad was sooo good! Never thought quinoa could taste this nice. My kids even liked it!

    1. User avatar michale.mann says:

      2 stars
Really? Quinoa just tastes like nothing to me. I don’t know how you got your kids to like it!

    2. User avatar velva.greenholt says:

      5 stars
I agree! This salad is so refreshing and packed with flavor. My kids loved it too, especially the cranberries!

  20. 2 stars
I accidentally poured the vinaigrette in too early and it kinda got soggy, so lesson learned: wait until the quinoa is cooked and fluffed. Still edible though, just not as crunchy.

  21. User avatar arletta.christiansen30 says:

    3 stars
My apples were rotten, but I used bananas instead. Still good? Kinda!

  22. User avatar Miss Elisa Kihn says:

    2 stars
Not sure about “salad” for this—tastes more like a sweet grain bowl. Still edible, but I’d dial back the honey next time.

  23. 4 stars
Simple and delicious! Perfect for a light lunch. I will make it again for sure.

  24. User avatar Slartibartfast says:

    5 stars
This is such a nice sweet-tart salad! The apple + cranberry combo is perfect, and toasting the walnuts really levels it up.

  25. User avatar dario.bednar62 says:

    2 stars
Honestly, I thought it would be better. It was kinda bland for my tastes. Maybe add some spices?

    1. User avatar destiny.kessler18 says:

      2 stars
Bland? I dunno, I thought it had enough flavor. Maybe you just used less honey? Idk…

    2. 4 stars
I think you’re right! A little cinnamon or nutmeg can really amp up the flavor. Thanks for the tip!

  26. User avatar Elvin Franecki says:

Lovely recipe! The honey adds a nice touch. I used pecans instead of walnuts. So good!

    1. User avatar avery.morissette67 says:

Pecans instead of walnuts? Interesting choice! I might try that too! 👍

  27. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

Quinoa always comes out weird for me. This one was tasty though, just not the fluffy texture I expected.

  28. 5 stars
Quick and simple, just like I like it! Will make again for my lunch meal prep!

  29. User avatar Humma Kavula says:

    3 stars
Quinoa is so good for you, but I don’t get why people love it this much. It tastes kinda weird, eh.

  30. 3 stars
My mom made a similar salad years ago, but with spaghetti. This quinoa thing is new to me. I might wanna switch it up!

    1. 3 stars
Not sure if quinoa can replace spaghetti. Sounds interesting tho. I’ll think about trying it!

    2. User avatar laronda.botsford says:

      5 stars
Quinoa is great! I’ve switched from pasta to quinoa in many dishes and love it. It’s so healthy!

  31. User avatar lizzzard says:

    4 stars
Made it for lunch prep and it lasted me a couple days. I did add a little extra salt and used chopped pecans instead of walnuts—still great.

  32. User avatar aubrey.marks says:

    4 stars
I used pecans instead of walnuts and it still worked. I chilled it overnight and the flavors got even better.

    1. User avatar rudolph.cruickshank66 says:

      5 stars
Nice! Swapping pecans for walnuts makes sense—both have that rich, toasty vibe. Chilling overnight usually really helps the quinoa soak up the vinaigrette.

  33. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    2 stars
I dunno about quinoa. Doesn’t it taste like grass? Apple & cranberries are good though.

  34. User avatar carissa.west87 says:

    3 stars
I tried to make this but I think I messed up the quinoa. It didn’t fluff at all lol! #quinoafail

Cranberries in salad? Sounds funky but I might try it!

    1. User avatar Pasta Fasta says:

      5 stars
I thought the same! Cranberries are way better than raisins in salads. Can’t wait to try it!

    2. User avatar berry.gerlach says:

Cranberries with salad? I dunno, sounds weird to me. I like my salad plain.

  36. User avatar jorge.hegmann58 says:

Too many ingredients for a simple salad. I prefer just lettuce.

  37. User avatar art.beer95 says:

    2 stars
Do you have to use apples? Can I use bananas instead?? Just curious.

  38. User avatar brain.howell1993 says:

    5 stars
This was surprisingly tasty! The tart cranberries + sweet honey dressing is a great combo, and the quinoa actually holds up well chilled.

    1. 5 stars
Yes! I felt the same—cranberries with the honey + vinegar is such a good sweet-tart punch. Also agreed on the quinoa staying good after chilling.

    2. User avatar loren.champlin93 says:

      3 stars
Maybe I did something wrong but mine was kinda bland 😕 I used a little less honey and maybe my walnuts weren’t toasted long enough. Still ate it tho—just needs more salt or more vinegar? Idk.

  39. 4 stars
My kids loved it! I added some extra honey for sweetness. Thx for the recipe!

  40. 5 stars
    Yum! Just yum! 😍

    1. User avatar loris.rodriguez says:

      5 stars
Right? I can’t stop thinking about it, I want to make it again! 😋

  41. User avatar lavern.thompson74 says:

    5 stars
Wow, so easy! I followed it exactly—only swapped pecans—and it turned out delicious. Will make again for potlucks. 10/10.

    1. User avatar Su Shenlong says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! The quinoa-to-water part is usually where people mess up, so doing it “exactly” definitely helps. I’m also glad the pecan swap worked out—love when it’s flexible for potlucks.

    2. 4 stars
I tried something similar once and my quinoa came out mushy… but maybe I didn’t let it sit covered. Also, is honey really enough sweetness with the vinegar? Sounds good though—will try!

  42. User avatar Kristyn Abshire says:

    4 stars
Cook time was spot on for me (mine took closer to 16-17 mins). I used chopped pecans instead of walnuts and it still worked great. Would totally make again for meal prep.

    1. User avatar Dwarven Centurion says:

      5 stars
Glad it worked for you! Mine usually runs a bit long too—good call on 16–17 mins. Pecans sound like an awesome swap for the walnuts.

    2. User avatar Ricky T. Ladder says:

      3 stars
I made this but I think I over-did the vinegar… kinda tangy 😅 Still tasty though. Do you chill it before eating or just let it sit?

  43. User avatar yun.hyatt says:

    5 stars
No lie, the vinaigrette is the star. I could drink it—jk—but I did end up adding it to a leafy salad later.

  44. User avatar Nikole Langosh I says:

    1 star
Quick & easy! But who eats quinoa? 😅 Just stick with regular rice!

  45. User avatar rodger.harris says:

    4 stars
Simplistic but nice! My kids ate it and asked for seconds. Surprising since they usually picky.

    1. User avatar bradford.swaniawski says:

      2 stars
Really? My kids wouldn’t touch quinoa with a ten-foot pole. Guess it’s just not for everyone.

    2. 5 stars
That’s awesome! It’s great to hear your kids enjoyed it. Mine are super picky too, but I think cranberries did the trick!

  46. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

    5 stars
This salad is so refreshing! I love the crunch from the walnuts and the sweetness of apples. Perfect for summertime!

  47. User avatar tatyana.feest says:

    5 stars
Really good, my kids ate it all. I’ll make it again! 🥗

  48. User avatar marcy.murazik35 says:

    3 stars
Do we gotta use maple syrup instead of honey? I like my recipes sweet!

  49. 4 stars
Just made this and it smells amazing! Can’t wait to try. 🙂

  50. User avatar dagmar.damore51 says:

    3 stars
I’m not sure honey belongs in a salad dressing… I know it’s only 1 tbsp but it was sweeter than I like. Next time I’ll cut it in half or add more vinegar. Otherwise the texture is great.

  51. User avatar isaias.pagac says:

    2 stars
I don’t get the hype. Quinoa is just tasteless! I don’t know why people keep using it.

  52. User avatar yuriko.ondricka16 says:

    4 stars
My quinoa took closer to 20 minutes to absorb all the water, but once I got the hang of it, the texture was great.

  53. User avatar miesha.bashirian says:

    5 stars
This salad is fantastic! The flavors work so well together. I’ll definitely be making it again!

  54. User avatar daryl.gerlach says:

    5 stars
Easy and looks fancy without trying. Also, thanks for the rinsing reminder—made a difference. Would be good with feta maybe (if you’re feeling extra).

  55. 3 stars
The honey makes it sweet, which is nice, but I think 1 tbsp is a lot if your cranberries are already sweetened.

  56. User avatar zachariah.bashirian9 says:

    5 stars
One of the best salads I’ve ever made! Easy peasy. 10 outta 10 would recommend.

  57. 4 stars
I tried it hot first (didn’t chill it) and it tasted kinda blah. After chilling overnight it was way better, so follow the instructions!

    1. User avatar kourtney.kiehn57 says:

      5 stars
Thanks for confirming that! I always assumed quinoa salads were better after a rest, but good to hear it straight—I’ll chill mine overnight next time.

  58. User avatar Deep Thought says:

    4 stars
1 cup quinoa to 2 cups water for 15 min seems like it might be off? Mine took longer, but I just kept cooking until the water was gone.

  59. User avatar margherita.wilkinson says:

    1 star
Looks okay but quinoa is bland. Add chicken at least lol.

    1. User avatar evelin.renner45 says:

      4 stars
Totally get you—quinoa can be super bland on its own. I usually add extra salt while it cooks and maybe a squeeze of lemon. Chicken would definitely make it more filling though 😂

  60. User avatar veronica.bahringer1959 says:

    1 star
Why do I need to let quinoa sit for 5 mins? Sounds silly. Just eat it right away! 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar tamekia.swaniawski75 says:

      5 stars
Letting it sit helps the quinoa fluff up better and lets the steam do its thing! Trust me, it makes a difference! 😊

  61. User avatar hyo.collins1972 says:

    3 stars
I don’t really like quinoa, but my sister loved it. It’s definitely healthy, but not my thing.

  62. User avatar vern.rogahn says:

    2 stars
Meh. Quinoa tastes kinda bland unless you do a lot more seasoning. Also I used walnuts but maybe I didn’t toast enough? Still, the apples were good.

  63. 3 stars
I don’t really know what quinoa is, but this sounds good. Are cranberries in season?

    1. User avatar phillip.schamberger1965 says:

      5 stars
Quinoa is such a great grain! It’s packed with protein, and it goes well with fruit like cranberries. As for cranberries, they are usually in season in the fall. This salad sounds delicious!

  64. 4 stars
Quinoa took longer than 15 minutes for me, like closer to 20. Not a big deal, just watch it so it doesn’t stay crunchy.

    1. User avatar Miles Teg says:

      4 stars
Huh I followed it exactly and mine was done in 15-ish… maybe my pot was hotter? But yeah quinoa can be stubborn. Next time I’ll watch for texture more than the clock.

    2. 5 stars
Good heads-up! I’ve noticed quinoa timing depends a lot on the brand/rinse. “Until absorbed” is definitely the real cue—if it’s still crunchy, just keep it covered and give it a few more minutes.

  65. User avatar alishia.dietrich82 says:

    2 stars
Meh. It was ok but nothing special. Wouldn’t make again. Sorry.

    1. User avatar ezekiel.barrows72 says:

      3 stars
Honestly, I thought it was a little bland too. Maybe more spices or something? 🤷‍♀️

    2. User avatar Slartibartfast says:

      5 stars
I disagree! This salad has a great balance of sweet and crunchy. I’d totally make it again!

  66. User avatar lovetta.herman says:

    5 stars
So simple but delish! I added feta cheese for some extra zing. Yum!

  67. User avatar clelia.ferry18 says:

    4 stars
Pretty tasty, but I found it needed a bit more salt than the recipe says. Also, my quinoa took closer to 20 minutes to absorb all the water.

    1. 5 stars
Glad you liked it! I’ve had quinoa vary a lot—my batches sometimes take closer to 18–20 min too. I usually add salt at the end and taste the vinaigrette first since apples + cranberries can make it feel like it needs more.

    2. User avatar jeri.powlowski says:

      3 stars
Huh, I followed it and mine was totally bland. I ended up adding extra salt and a splash more vinegar. Also 20 minutes seems long—maybe the heat was lower or the quinoa wasn’t fully rinsed?

  68. User avatar dania.fisher says:

    3 stars
Way too much vinegar for my taste. Next time I’ll cut it in half or add extra honey. Apples saved it though.

    1. User avatar renate.smitham47 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—2 tbsp vinegar is pretty punchy. Cutting it in half (or even 1 tbsp) would probably make it more balanced, especially with the sweet apples.

    2. User avatar chester.schneider says:

      4 stars
I like tart stuff, so I’m into it, but your apple idea makes sense. I usually add a little more honey too—maybe that’s why mine doesn’t taste too vinegar-y.

  69. User avatar russel.franecki62 says:

    5 stars
This is such a good combo—sweet/tart from the cranberries and apples, and the walnuts add a nice crunch. I served it room temp and it was perfect.

  70. 2 stars
Is this really healthy? Quinoa just seems like a fad to me. 🤷‍♂️

  71. User avatar noel.nicolas says:

    4 stars
I wasn’t sure about quinoa, but this recipe is pretty good. The apples add a nice crunch!

  72. 3 stars
Way too healthy for my taste 😅 I mean it’s good, but I wanted more salt or something savory.

  73. User avatar marna.crist35 says:

    5 stars
This is such a bright, fall-y salad. The apple + cranberry combo is perfect, and the honey vinaigrette really ties it all together. I served it chilled and it tasted even better the next day.

    1. User avatar nathanial.sauer54 says:

      3 stars
I made something similar, but I’m not sure about the 1 tbsp honey—feels a little too sweet with cranberries. Did you keep the measurements exactly?

    2. 5 stars
Yes!! Apple + cranberry is such a cozy combo, and chilling it overnight sounds *perfect*. I’m trying this for lunch next week.

  74. 2 stars
Quinoa in a salad is good, but I think 1/2 cup cranberries is too much. Mine were super tart and overpowered the apples. I’ll do 1/4 cup next time.

  75. User avatar margrett.watsica61 says:

    4 stars
I did everything the same but used maple syrup instead of honey. Still tasted great. Would 100% make again for meal prep lunches.

  76. User avatar Verona Padberg says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical but tried it anyway. The apples are a nice touch!

  77. User avatar terence.feil says:

    3 stars
I liked the flavors but mine came out a little dry—probably my quinoa absorbed more water. Next time I’ll be more careful measuring or maybe add a tiny splash of extra vinegar/oil to loosen it up.

  78. User avatar susann.feest28 says:

    5 stars
This salad is so refreshing! I added some feta for extra flavor. Yum!

  79. User avatar oscar.lakin2001 says:

    2 stars
Not a fan, the quinoa was too chewy for my taste. Maybe less cooking time?

  80. User avatar galen.schmidt says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I think 1 cup quinoa might need a bit more than 2 cups water—mine was slightly underdone after 15 min. Still ate it though, just cooked a few extra minutes. Walnuts toasted perfectly.

  81. User avatar georgine.langworth says:

    3 stars
I tried to toast the walnuts but burned them a little (oops). Even then, the apples saved it. Next time I’ll watch closer.

  82. 2 stars
Quinoa salad for dinner? I don’t know… it sounds healthy but not filling. I tried it anyway and it was okay, but I’d add chicken or something.

    1. User avatar ralph.fadel1997 says:

      5 stars
Totally get what you mean—quinoa can feel light for dinner. Adding chicken (or even chickpeas) would make it way more filling. I’ve also tossed in some roasted veggies for extra heft and it still tastes fresh.

  83. User avatar wellRespected says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about quinoa + fruit in a “salad,” but it turned out surprisingly good. Will make again.

    1. User avatar wendell.schultz says:

      5 stars
Honestly same—I thought it would be weirdly sweet for a “salad,” but your comment makes me wanna try it. The vinegar + honey combo sounds like it would pull it together.

  84. 3 stars
I used maple syrup instead of honey and it was kinda meh… like sweet but not tangy enough. Next time I’ll do honey again.

    1. 5 stars
Good call back to honey—maple syrup can be sweet but yeah, it won’t give that same tangy punch the vinegar + honey combo usually does.

  85. User avatar Seth MacGyver says:

    3 stars
I followed the steps pretty closely but my quinoa came out a bit clumpy. Maybe I didn’t rinse enough? Flavor was good though.

Tried this for lunch and it’s actually way better than I expected. The sweet-tart combo from cranberries + apple is on point, and the vinegar-honey dressing makes it taste “fresh” even the next day.

I followed it pretty closely, but I think 1/2 cup walnuts is a lot—felt a bit crunchy-dominant for me. Still tasted great though.

Totally get that—walnuts can get pretty overpowering. I’ve done 1/4 cup before and it still feels crunchy without stealing the whole show.

Cranberry apple quinoa salad—yes please. 10/10 in my book.

Totally agree—this sounds like the perfect sweet-tart, crunchy-satisfying salad. I’m stealing this for lunch this week 😄

I’m not usually into quinoa salads, but this one surprised me. The vinaigrette is the star—bright and not overly sweet.

The texture was kind of weird—mine clumped together. Maybe I didn’t rinse the quinoa enough, but still good flavors.

Not convinced. Quinoa is bland and this didn’t fix it for me—could use more seasoning or even some herbs like parsley.
