Clam Cakes

September 4, 2024

Clam Cakes are a beloved coastal treat, especially popular in New England, where seafood reigns supreme. These golden, crispy fritters are packed with bits of tender clams and savory seasonings, offering the perfect balance of crunch on the outside and fluffy, flavorful goodness on the inside. Whether enjoyed as an appetizer, snack, or paired with a bowl of clam chowder, clam cakes are a satisfying bite of the sea.

The magic of clam cakes comes from their simplicity. Chopped fresh or canned clams are folded into a thick batter made from flour, baking powder, eggs, and milk. The batter is lightly seasoned with salt, pepper, and sometimes a touch of Old Bay, garlic powder, or parsley to enhance the flavor without overpowering the clams. The star of the show remains the clam, briny, tender, and perfectly complemented by the crisp batter.

Once the batter is ready, it’s dropped by the spoonful into hot oil and fried until golden brown. The result is a crispy exterior with a soft, fluffy center dotted with juicy bits of clam in every bite. Each fritter has just the right amount of chew and crunch, making it incredibly satisfying.

Clam cakes are often served with lemon wedges and a side of tartar sauce for dipping, though some prefer a dash of hot sauce or a drizzle of malt vinegar for extra tang. They pair perfectly with a bowl of creamy clam chowder or a fresh green salad for a lighter meal.

Whether you enjoy them at a seaside shack or make them at home, clam cakes capture the essence of coastal comfort food. They’re simple, delicious, and always a hit at gatherings, cookouts, or family dinners. Crispy, savory, and filled with the flavor of the ocean, clam cakes are a timeless classic you’ll crave again and again.

I don’t know, clams in a cake? That sounds kinda weird to me. How were they really? Were they as good as you say?

  3. 2 stars
Mine came out a bit soggy, not sure what went wrong. 🤔

  4. User avatar yasmine.dicki70 says:

Tried these at a party, they were a hit! Everyone loved ’em!

    1. 5 stars
Glad to hear they were a hit! Clam cakes are the best party food. 🎉

  6. User avatar mardell.klocko32 says:

Not gonna lie, “clam juice” as a main ingredient is kinda genius. I’d just season it a bit more (pepper, maybe Old Bay).

  7. 3 stars
I followed the recipe but they didn’t turn out right. I think I added too much clam juice. Anyone else have this problem?

    1. 4 stars
I think clam juice can be tricky, I added too much once too and they were too salty. Maybe try reducing it next time!

  8. 4 stars
Great recipe! But I think you need more flour, right? They were a bit too gooey.

  9. User avatar Bessie Bechtelar says:

    5 stars
Yummmm! Tasted like the beach!🌊 I had them with some homemade tartar sauce.

  10. User avatar mauro.hackett says:

    2 stars
I made something like this once and it was really good, but mine needed way more flour to bind. I’d be worried the batter won’t hold together as written.

  11. User avatar merlin.hodkiewicz1954 says:

    2 stars
Lol, it says egg and clam juice but where’s the seasoning? Needs more flavor!

  12. 3 stars
I don’t get why baking powder is only 1/2 tbsp. For me it needed more lift. But the clams flavor came through nicely. Maybe I just had a heavier clam.

  13. 3 stars
Not sure if I did it right but mine were super soggy. What did I do wrong?

  14. User avatar vicente.crooks55 says:

    4 stars
Made these for my family, they all loved it! Such a great snack. ❤️

  15. User avatar nathanael.farrell20 says:

    2 stars
Not what I expected. I mean, clams in a cake? Kinda weird, but gave it a shot. Not terrible, but not my fave. 2 stars.

    1. User avatar Gurney Halleck says:

      4 stars
Clams in a cake might sound odd, but they can be really tasty! I loved this recipe when I tried it. Give it another shot!

    2. User avatar regenia.jacobson1977 says:

      1 star
Ew, clams in a cake? That sounds gross! Cake is for sweets, not seafood! 1 star for this madness.

  16. User avatar hortense.damore says:

    4 stars
I love clam cakes but this feels super simple—like no measurements for the clam juice or clams? Still, the egg + flour + baking powder combo sounds promising. I’d try it with a bit more flour if it’s too wet.

  17. User avatar suzan.herman47 says:

    4 stars
Yummy! These taste like the coast! Thanks for sharing your mom’s recipe. 🙂

  18. User avatar otha.muller2021 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about using clam juice, but these turned out great! Really unique flavor.

    1. User avatar avery.heidenreich says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Clam juice adds such a depth of flavor. Who knew it could be so good? 🍽️

    2. User avatar christiane.brekke1996 says:

      2 stars
Clam juice?? Really? I ain’t sure about that. Sounds kinda gross to me. 🤔

  19. User avatar georgie.blick says:

    2 stars
The instructions are so short it’s like a dare. I’m not a mind reader—how thick should the batter be? I ended up adding extra baking powder and it tasted a little off.

    1. 2 stars
Honestly I just dumped everything in and hoped for the best. Mine turned out chewy, but my kids ate them anyway. Maybe use more flour next time so it’s not so watery?

    2. User avatar destiny.predovic says:

      4 stars
I hear you 😅 I’ve made these—batter should be pourable but not runny. Like a thick pancake batter. If yours tasted “off,” it might’ve been too much baking powder.

  20. 1 star
How can you even call this a recipe? All you do is mix stuff! Not impressed.

  21. User avatar Frostbite Spider says:

    5 stars
Clam cakes? Never heard of this before, but I gave it a shot and not disappointed!

  22. User avatar carmelo.altenwerth1 says:

    2 stars
Not sure how much “clam juice” to use. Like, a splash? a cup? Also “clams” could be minced or chopped—your instructions are super vague.

    1. 3 stars
Yeah I agree—“a little” and “super vague” is exactly how you end up with clam soup instead of cakes 😅 I usually do about 1/4 to 1/2 cup clam juice per egg, then add clams (chopped) until the batter holds together.

    2. User avatar Restless Draugr says:

      4 stars
I’d start with a splash, like 2-3 tablespoons, and add more only if it’s too thick. For clams, I chop them small so they distribute and cook evenly.

  23. User avatar bonny.turcotte1975 says:

    5 stars
This is such a clever use of clam juice. If you add a touch of butter to the olive oil, I bet it tastes restaurant-level.

  24. 4 stars
Five stars for using clams, but the recipe is missing key amounts. Add “enough clam juice to make a batter” and I’d make it again. Right now I’m guessing.

  25. User avatar Sirena Crist says:

    5 stars
5 stars!!! My family loved this recipe! Thank you sooo much!

  26. User avatar wiley.kunde78 says:

    4 stars
These clam cakes sound genuinely comforting—love the simple ingredient list and the quick pan-cook method. Might add some pepper and a little garlic though.

  27. User avatar Gail Andrews says:

    5 stars
These clam cakes are so good! Just like my grandma used to make. Thanks for sharing!

    1. User avatar Trin Tragula says:

      5 stars
Glad you liked them! My grandma also had a special touch. Can’t wait to try this recipe!

  28. 1 star
🤢 These were awful. I don’t know who would want to eat this.

    1. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      4 stars
I’m sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy them! I think it’s an acquired taste. 😅

    2. User avatar suzanne.douglas says:

      2 stars
Ugh, clam cakes?! No thanks! Who wants to eat that stuff anyway? 🤷‍♂️

  29. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    5 stars
Wow, comfort food vibes! I made these for brunch and everyone went back for seconds. The olive oil browning made them feel restaurant-y.

    1. User avatar Lyndon Green says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome—brunch + seconds is the dream. I’ve never done the olive oil browning trick though, so now I’m curious!

  30. 2 stars
Not what I expected… they were kinda mushy. Shoulda added more flour!

  31. User avatar lenard.okon says:

    4 stars
Yummy! I love clams. This is a win! 🙂

    1. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

      5 stars
I’m glad you liked it! Clams are the best! 😍

  32. 4 stars
I love clams, so I’m 100% trying this. If it turns out too salty or watery, I can always adjust—right?

  33. 3 stars
I followed the recipe but it turned out too salty. Maybe cut back on the clam juice?

  34. User avatar Leto II Atreides says:

    5 stars
Sounds delicious! I’m hungry already 😂 Probably best with tartar sauce or lemon.

  35. User avatar thomas.treutel75 says:

    1 star
Clams in a cake? Sounds weird.

    1. User avatar jodie.jerde34 says:

      2 stars
Eww, that sounds gross. How can you put clams in a cake? That’s just wrong.

    2. User avatar noella.rohan2019 says:

      4 stars
I thought the same at first, but they’re actually really delicious! Give it a try.

  36. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    3 stars
Really easy to make, but missing some flavor. What can I add to make it better?

  37. User avatar jaquelyn.batz29 says:

    3 stars
I thought this recipe would be better… but it was kinda bland. Add more spices next time.

  38. User avatar San Shenlong says:

    4 stars
This is basically just a pancake with seafood. Kinda genius. I served it with lemon and it slapped.

  39. User avatar willy.hermiston1955 says:

    1 star
Clam juice?? Ewwww. I’m not sure about this one.

    1. User avatar devorah.johns says:

      4 stars
I understand your hesitation, but clam juice really adds a unique flavor! You might be surprised if you give it a chance!

  40. User avatar Death Hound says:

    3 stars
How do you even get clams? I only see them canned in the store. Can you use shrimp instead?

  41. User avatar lonna.quigley says:

    5 stars
These clam cakes are delicious! I added some chili flakes for a kick. Will make again!

  42. 4 stars
Pretty good for a quick recipe. I added some spices and made it more interesting.

  43. User avatar jerrod.leannon47 says:

    3 stars
Tried this recipe, but it was too salty for my taste. Maybe less clam juice next time?

  44. User avatar brenna.hayes79 says:

    3 stars
I think it needs herbs. Like parsley or chives. Otherwise it’s just… clam mash on a pan. But maybe that’s the point.

    1. User avatar Ms. Sheron Greenfelder says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—parsley or chives would make these feel less like just clam mash and more like proper clam cakes.

  45. User avatar dahlia.smith1980 says:

    2 stars
I don’t think these are authentic clam cakes. My grandma used way more ingredients. Disappointed.

  46. User avatar Trin Tragula says:

    5 stars
These clam cakes sound super comforting. The simplicity is kinda refreshing—just mix, pan-fry, and done. I’d add a little chopped parsley for sure!

  47. User avatar liliana.roob2003 says:

    5 stars
So easy to make and my kids actually ate them! Who knew?

  48. User avatar edwardo.wehner57 says:

    2 stars
I dunno, I thought they were kinda bland. Needed more seasoning for sure. Won’t be making again.

  49. 4 stars
Super simple! My kids loved them although they thought they were cookies at first haha!

  50. User avatar tory.jakubowski96 says:

    3 stars
Yummy but too salty. Maybe I added too much clam juice? Not sure if I’d try again.

    1. User avatar jame.kessler says:

      3 stars
Too salty? That’s surprising. I thought the clam flavor was great! But yeah, can’t hurt to tweak the ingredients.

    2. User avatar norberto.gottlieb says:

      4 stars
I totally get it! Clam juice can be really salty. Maybe try using a little less next time. Hope you give it another shot!

  51. User avatar joe_banana says:

    5 stars
These clam cakes are so delicious! My husband loved them! Will definitely make again.

  52. User avatar damian.haley says:

    5 stars
    Yum!

  53. User avatar lewis.lynch19 says:

    4 stars
I don’t even like clams, but these are alright. Surprised me!

  54. 5 stars
I was skeptical about this but wow, I’m impressed! So simple and tasty.

    1. User avatar jerold.hayes says:

      2 stars
I don’t know, it sounds kinda gross to me. Clams in a cake?!

    2. User avatar della.halvorson24 says:

      4 stars
Glad to hear! Clam cakes are seriously underrated. Did you add any spices?

  55. User avatar Treebeard says:

    4 stars
When you say clams, I think of the ocean! My grandma used to make something similar but with more ingredients.

  56. User avatar leeanne.boehm92 says:

    2 stars
Do you cook the clams first or can they be raw? Because I’m pretty sure raw clams aren’t gonna be ready in a quick fry.

  57. User avatar virgil.ratke66 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical. Egg + flour + baking powder for clams seems like it might be too cakey. But mine turned out surprisingly good!

    1. User avatar Fritz Kling says:

      2 stars
No way… clams are salty and egg is salty, so with flour and baking powder it’s gonna taste weird and puff up like bread. I tried once and it was kinda cakey and fell apart. Maybe I used too much flour?

    2. User avatar Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings says:

      5 stars
Haha I get the skepticism 😅 but clams + a little flour/baking powder actually makes a nice tender bite instead of rubbery. Mine weren’t cakey at all—more like a savory fritter.

  58. User avatar abdul.weissnat says:

    1 star
    Clams? Seriously? 🤮

  59. User avatar margart.jacobson says:

    4 stars
Can I substitute something for the clams? I’m not a fan of seafood. Maybe chicken?

    1. User avatar gordon.welch1953 says:

      2 stars
Not really! Clams give it that unique flavor. You might not like it with chicken, trust me.

    2. 3 stars
Chicken would totally change the dish! It’s a clam cake after all. Maybe try veggies instead?

  60. User avatar tisa.bartell46 says:

    5 stars
These clam cakes are a family favorite! So easy to make!

  61. 3 stars
I just tossed everything together and it sorta worked. Not an expert cook but these were alright. 😐

  62. 5 stars
My family loved these—crispy edges, briny flavor, and they’re surprisingly easy. I added a pinch of pepper and a tiny bit of garlic and it took them to the next level.

  63. User avatar marry.bins99 says:

    4 stars
Easy peasy recipe! My kids loved them. Who knew clams could be so fun to cook with?

  64. 2 stars
Not sure about the measurements. “Clam juice” without a quantity is… a choice 😅. Taste was good, texture was weird at first.

    1. User avatar lavern.reichert89 says:

      3 stars
Texture weird at first makes sense if the clam juice ratio’s off. Like, I love clams but I’d add less liquid next time—also are those clams chopped? “Put all ingredients together” is kinda chaotic 😅

    2. User avatar hans.parisian2001 says:

      4 stars
Yeah I had the same thought—“clam juice” is super vague. I usually add a splash until the batter loosens up a bit, not too watery. Glad the flavor still came through though!

  65. User avatar tifany.brakus94 says:

    2 stars
I tried to make this but it didn’t taste like I thought it would. The clams were kind of gross in the cake.

  66. User avatar tommy.block1967 says:

    3 stars
Is it really clam juice? I thought you needed a special clam broth for this? Gotta check my facts. 🤔

  67. User avatar siu.ernser says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the “clam juice” measurement—how much are we talking? I guessed and mine turned out bland. Still, the texture was okay.

    1. 4 stars
I usually use about 1/2 cup clam juice for this kind of batter, but it depends on how wet your clams are. If it tastes bland, you may need a pinch of salt (and/or a bit more clam juice for flavor).

  68. User avatar lorna.wisoky1998 says:

    3 stars
Sounds okay, but I’m skeptical about clam cakes without any salt. Also, olive oil + hot pan = splatter city lol. Be careful.

    1. User avatar Mrs. Luis Kuhlman says:

      5 stars
Lol splatter city 😂 I use less oil and a lower heat so it doesn’t pop everywhere. Also I might add a tiny bit of salt next time—mine didn’t seem super salty either.

    2. 4 stars
Totally get your skepticism—clam juice alone might be salty enough depending on the brand, but if it’s bland, yeah, it’ll taste flat. I’d definitely taste the batter and add a pinch of salt if needed.

  69. User avatar latonia.vandervort75 says:

    2 stars
I tried a similar thing before and it fell apart because the batter was too wet. Hopefully the baking powder + flour holds it together. Any tips?

  70. User avatar lynetta.roberts says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, “clam juice” is vague. I used a can of minced clams and just added the juice, but my batter was runny. I think it needs more flour. Otherwise flavor was good.

  71. User avatar emeline.gislason says:

    1 star
Not sure why they call it clam cakes when there’s hardly any clams in it. Feels misleading.

  72. User avatar cristy.goyette74 says:

    5 stars
OMG! Best clam cakes I’ve had! Better than any restaurant! ❤️

    1. User avatar therese.russel6 says:

      5 stars
Wow, that’s high praise! Can’t wait to try it myself!

  73. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    5 stars
Simple and easy to follow! I added some spices and they came out perfect!

  74. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    5 stars
Five stars just for the seafood vibe. Clams + fried cakes = instant snack energy.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! “instant snack energy” is exactly it. The clam juice really makes it feel like the ocean in cake form 😄

    2. User avatar wanetta.goyette62 says:

      4 stars
Not gonna lie, I thought “clam + fried cakes” would be weird, but this is actually making me want to try it. Do you drain the clams first or just dump them in?

  75. User avatar laurice.kshlerin7 says:

    4 stars
I’m trying this, but the ingredients list is missing amounts for the clam juice and clams. Like… is it 1 cup? Either way, the concept is great.

  76. User avatar rosalyn.ruecker says:

    2 stars
I tried this recipe last night and it turned out terrible. The clams were just too much.

  77. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    2 stars
I tried this and it stuck to the pan like crazy. Also, “cook the mixture” is vague—how long? I felt kinda lost.

  78. 3 stars
Can I substitute the clams with something else? Maybe tuna? 🤔

    1. User avatar roscoe.wyman1950 says:

      4 stars
Tuna could work, but it’s a whole different flavor! You might wanna try something like chopped mushrooms if you want more of a similar texture.

  79. User avatar guy.emard1997 says:

    4 stars
These sound interesting, but I don’t like clams. Can I use something else?

  80. User avatar roland.marvin1996 says:

    4 stars
These are kinda weird but in a good way. Like hush puppies, but with the ocean. I’ll make again, maybe thinner so they cook evenly.

  81. User avatar chang.jenkins1963 says:

    2 stars
Very easy recipe, but not much flavor without spices. Needs garlic or something.

  82. User avatar shanon.kuvalis87 says:

    1 star
Meh. I think clams should stay in the ocean. 1 star!

  83. User avatar elmer.aufderhar says:

    1 star
Baking powder + clams? idk… Mine were too bready and didn’t taste clammy enough.

  84. 3 stars
Too much clam juice? I think it ruined the consistency. Might try again with less next time.

  85. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    3 stars
Easy and quick! But why didn’t you say how many clams?? That was confusing!

  86. User avatar christoper.hackett says:

    5 stars
These clam cakes are amazing! So easy to make. I definitely recommend trying them!

    1. 5 stars
I can’t wait to try these! They sound delicious and super easy. Thanks for sharing!

    2. 3 stars
Ehh, not sure about clams in a cake, sounds weird to me. But maybe I’ll give it a shot!

  87. User avatar laverne.prosacco says:

    5 stars
Honestly this looks like a real comfort-food thing. I grew up eating something similar and this brought back memories. Simple and hearty.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! That “comfort food” vibe is exactly it. The clams make it feel special but the steps are still super simple.

    2. 4 stars
I might try this, but quick question—how much clam juice are you using? The ingredient list just says “clam juice” so I’m not sure on the amount.

  88. User avatar cliff.zemlak71 says:

    5 stars
These clam cakes sound like such a fun twist—simple ingredients, and the baking powder should make them nice and fluffy. I’d definitely try them with a squeeze of lemon.

  89. 5 stars
    Wow, easy! 5 stars. 😄

  90. User avatar una.russel2 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but my batter was way too loose. Next time I’ll use more flour (or drain the clams a bit). Tasted great though!
