Chocolate Lava Cake with Cherries

January 23, 2024

Chocolate lava cake is already a showstopper, but when you add cherries to the mix, it becomes next-level indulgent. The combination of warm, molten chocolate and juicy, slightly tart cherries creates a dessert that feels luxurious but is surprisingly easy to make.

The base of the cake is a simple chocolate batter made with dark chocolate, butter, sugar, eggs, and just a touch of flour. When baked for the right amount of time, the outer layer sets into a soft cake, while the inside remains deliciously gooey, hence the “lava.” The magic happens in the oven, and timing is everything. Pull them out too early, and they collapse. Leave them too long, and you lose that molten center.

The cherry component adds a layer of brightness that cuts through the richness of the chocolate. You can fold chopped cherries into the batter, spoon a cherry compote into the center, or serve the cakes with warm cherries on top. Use fresh cherries if they’re in season, or reach for frozen or jarred sour cherries in syrup during colder months.

These little cakes are baked in ramekins and flipped out onto a plate just before serving. They look elegant but don’t require any complicated techniques, which makes them a great option for a date night, dinner party, or even a cozy night in.

Serve the lava cakes warm with a dusting of powdered sugar, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or a drizzle of cherry sauce for extra drama. The hot chocolate center will slowly ooze out as you cut in, mixing with the sweet fruit and creating a rich, satisfying bite.

Chocolate and cherries are a timeless pairing, and this dessert celebrates both flavors beautifully. With a soft outer cake, a molten center, and bursts of cherry goodness, chocolate lava cake with cherries is the kind of dessert people remember, and request again and again.

Not sure about adding cherries right in the middle—mine sank and some juice leaked out. Taste was still good, just not as pretty. Next time I’ll pat cherries dry.

Easy to make and so delicious! I used strawberries instead of cherries since I didn’t have any. Still great!

These are soo good! I used frozen cherries instead, and they still turned out great. My kids loved them! Thanks for the recipe!

I’m so glad you and your kids enjoyed them! Frozen cherries sound like a delicious twist. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I used semi-sweet chocolate because that’s what I had, and it was still good. Next time I’ll use dark like it says—probably richer.

  6. User avatar corey.lueilwitz says:

I don’t know about adding cherries, seems weird! But cake is cake, so I’ll give it a try.

  7. 2 stars
Too much chocolate for me. I prefer vanilla. Does anyone know if you can make this with less chocolate?

    1. User avatar hank.labadie79 says:

      4 stars
You could maybe reduce the chocolate a bit, but it might not be lava cake anymore. But hey, vanilla’s good too!

  8. User avatar Latashia Dach says:

This was an absolute hit at my dinner party! So gooey and chocolatey. I added some ice cream on the side, and it was divine! Will definitely make again.

Made this last night and WOW. The centers were perfectly molten, and the cherries totally cut the richness. I worried about overbaking, but 13 minutes in my oven was spot on.

    1. User avatar jackie.hickle says:

      5 stars
Yes!! 13 minutes sounds perfect—my centers always get questionable if I go even a couple minutes too far. The cherries are such a good call; they really balance the chocolate.

  10. 4 stars
I forgot to add sugar and it was still okay. Definitely a keeper! 👍 4/5.

  11. User avatar domenica.renner71 says:

Yum!!! Best dessert I ever made!! ❤️❤️ Everyone was impressed, but they were like, ‘How did you make this?!’

  12. User avatar vincenza.leannon2 says:

Made this last night and it’s honestly restaurant-level. The center stayed gooey exactly like you said—my friends were shocked it was homemade.

  13. User avatar summer.morissette7 says:

Yummy!! 😍 The chocolate is so rich and the cherries add a nice twist. Will be making again for sure!

  14. User avatar marcellus.schinner1980 says:

    2 stars
okay but 180°C is too hot? mine burned on the edges before the center got right. maybe my oven runs off.

  15. 2 stars
Honestly, I expected more. The chocolate flavor wasn’t strong enough. I think I’ll stick to brownies. Sorry!

    1. User avatar Fortune Teller says:

      4 stars
I totally get that! Sometimes desserts just don’t hit the mark. Have you tried adding more chocolate next time?

  16. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing!!! The chocolate lava just flows out and the cherries add a nice tang. Will definitely make again!

  19. User avatar Dominic Vernius says:

    5 stars
Yummo! Chocolate + cherries = best combo! I didn’t have ramekins so used muffin tin, still turned out great!

  20. User avatar lamont.metz91 says:

    4 stars
Way too much butter?? But okay… the texture is perfect and the chocolate flavor is deep. Cherry placement was easy.

  21. User avatar lonna.herzog86 says:

    3 stars
Hmm, I don’t know about this… The batter was too runny. Did I do something wrong? I followed the instructions carefully.

  22. 3 stars
Umm, I don’t have ramekins, can I just use a big baking dish instead?

  23. 2 stars
I followed the recipe exactly, but my cakes came out all flat and weird. What did I do wrong?

  24. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    5 stars
These are dangerously easy and also dangerously rich. I used 70% dark chocolate and it still came out great. Would definitely serve with vanilla ice cream.

  25. User avatar ulysses.mitchell says:

    2 stars
This seems too much butter for only 100g flour? Mine separated a bit when I mixed, maybe I melted the chocolate too hot. Still good though.

  26. User avatar arron.mohr says:

    5 stars
This looks so delicious! Can’t wait to try it. 5 stars!

  27. 5 stars
This was so delish! My friends couldn’t believe I made it. Will definitely make again!

  28. User avatar Benjamin Buckridge says:

    5 stars
Super easy to make! I whipped this up for my kids and they loved it!

  29. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    4 stars
I don’t know if I whisked long enough, because the batter looked kind of grainy at first, but folding helped. Ended up fine—kids asked for seconds.

  30. 4 stars
I used frozen cherries, and they turned out great! Can I use other fruits instead? Like bananas?

    1. User avatar jordan.sanford says:

      2 stars
Bananas? Really? I thought they would turn brown and ruin it… Just stick with cherries!

    2. User avatar armadillo says:

      4 stars
You can try bananas, but they might make it too mushy. Cherries are pretty perfect for this recipe!

  31. User avatar stephen.mcdermott43 says:

    3 stars
Isn’t this just a molten chocolate cake? Whatever, still delicious but kinda basic for all the fuss.

  32. User avatar errol.harvey says:

    5 stars
This is the best chocolate recipe I’ve found. Super easy and fancy!

    1. User avatar sharen.kessler12 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! This cake is a game changer! I’ve never baked anything so fancy before.

  33. User avatar bert.johns says:

    3 stars
The instructions are kinda confusin’, but I made it work. Next time I’ll read it good first.

  34. 5 stars
Absolutely loved this recipe! The gooey center was just perfect. My friends couldn’t get enough!

  35. 5 stars
Wow, wow, wow! I’m not a baker but this made me feel like a pro. The lava part was just perfect. Like, where has this been all my life?

  36. User avatar joe_banana says:

    3 stars
Oven temp was off! Mine came out burnt on the outside, still raw inside. Kinda sad.

    1. User avatar saul.wilkinson73 says:

      4 stars
Sorry to hear that! Maybe your oven runs hot? It happens. You can try lower temp next time.

  37. User avatar melonie.sporer87 says:

    2 stars
180°C felt a little low? I ended up turning it up and they got overcooked. Also I used a mixer on eggs instead of whisking and it foamed too much. Still tasty but not the texture I wanted.

  38. 4 stars
Easy but messy 😅 melting chocolate over water works, just don’t get water in the bowl. I’m glad I read that, because I almost did.

  39. User avatar rosalind.lind says:

    5 stars
Made these for a dinner party and they were a total hit. The center stayed perfectly gooey and the cherries gave it this sweet-tart pop. Super impressive for something that’s not too complicated.

  40. User avatar Dr. Fredricka Swaniawski says:

    3 stars
Too sweet for my taste and the cherries were kinda weird with chocolate. Just stick to chocolate next time, I guess.

  41. User avatar Celinda Barrows says:

    4 stars
The steps about butter-flouring the ramekins saved me. I was paranoid they’d stick. They released beautifully, and the outside had that great cake-y texture.

  42. 2 stars
Tried this recipe, but it didn’t turn out like the photos. Too messy and my kids didn’t like the cherries.

  43. User avatar frederick.quitzon78 says:

    5 stars
Chocolates + cherries = love. Tried it for my anniversary and it was perfect! 🥰

  44. User avatar stefani.kshlerin94 says:

    4 stars
The cherries are a nice touch but I think 2 per ramekin might be too few for me. Next batch I’m putting more, and maybe adding a tiny pinch of salt to the batter.

  45. 4 stars
I couldn’t find cherries, so I used strawberries instead. Still turned out yummy! But I bet with cherries it would be even better.

  46. User avatar maybelle.marquardt76 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about “12-15 minutes” because ovens vary so much. Mine took closer to 18. Once I adjusted, it was great—just don’t trust the timer blindly.

  47. User avatar emil.mitchell16 says:

    2 stars
I don’t like cherries, can I use strawberries? Also, this looks way too fancy for me. 😅

    1. User avatar cleveland.collier says:

      5 stars
You can totally swap cherries for strawberries! They’ll taste yummy too. And fancy? Nah, just a bit of effort! 😄

  48. 4 stars
This seems legit, but my lava didn’t really “flow.” I think I overbaked by like 3 minutes. Still tasted amazing though.

  49. User avatar Barry Manilow says:

    5 stars
This lava cake is a total game changer! The cherries add a nice twist. Can’t believe how easy it was to make!

  50. User avatar marion.morar41 says:

    4 stars
I love cherries, but can I replace them with strawberries? 4 stars!

  51. User avatar meryl.bashirian60 says:

    5 stars
So rich it almost tastes illegal. I used sour cherries because that’s what I had and it still worked. Next time I’ll add a pinch of salt to the batter.

  52. 3 stars
The ingredients are simple, but the timing is scary. Mine were almost fully set at 15 minutes, not lava. I’ll try 11-12 next time.

    1. User avatar donnetta.cremin says:

      5 stars
Totally get the “scary timing” 😅 Mine did something similar the first time—15 mins made it more brownie than lava. 11–12 really is the sweet spot if you want that gooey center. Your note is super helpful.

  53. User avatar angel.gleichner says:

    4 stars
Tastes like heaven, but so much butter 😅. Is that normal?

    1. User avatar illa.bergnaum74 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, that’s pretty normal for a dessert like this! It makes it so rich and delicious. Just indulge! 😋

  54. User avatar ronnie.waelchi47 says:

    3 stars
Really? 12-15 minutes?? I left mine in for 20 and it was still a bit gooey. I thought I followed every step.

  55. User avatar Malinda Spinka V says:

    5 stars
Had no idea how easy this was! Easiest dessert I’ve ever made, and it looked fancy too! 5 stars!

    1. User avatar trinidad.kiehn38 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome to hear! It’s such a perfect dessert to impress guests without much hassle. 🍰

  56. User avatar micah.koepp says:

    5 stars
This recipe is amazing! The lava cakes turned out perfect and the cherries add a nice touch. Will definitely make again!

  57. User avatar wallace.fadel75 says:

    2 stars
I dunno, didn’t really work for me. Mine were all burnt and not lava-like. 😩 Maybe it was the oven?

  58. User avatar christina.rolfson40 says:

    3 stars
I only had milk chocolate and it turned out… not bad. But it wasn’t as intense, and I think the molten center was a little less dramatic. Dark is the way to go.

    1. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      3 stars
Hmm, I used milk chocolate once and mine still came out super lava-y, so maybe it’s more about not overbaking than the type of chocolate. Did you pull it when the centers were still jiggly?

    2. 5 stars
Ooh I’ve done the same with milk chocolate—totally agree it’s less “molten” and the center isn’t as intense. Dark really helps with the dramatic gooey pull!

  59. User avatar brian.goldner1984 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, mine didn’t lava—more like dense cake in the middle. I think I baked them closer to 18 minutes because my oven runs hot. The flavor was still amazing though.

  60. User avatar wellRespected says:

    5 stars
Looks amazing. Lava cake w cherries yes.

  61. 5 stars
My whole family loved it!!! Only thing I added was a scoop of ice cream on the side. Yum!

  62. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    5 stars
Yum! Perfect for a romantic dinner. I added a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top! 😍

  63. User avatar danial.rempel2013 says:

    5 stars
This dessert is truly divine! I followed the recipe to the letter and it was perfect. The gooey center is just amazing. Definitely a 5!

    1. 5 stars
I tried this recipe too, and OMG, it was a hit at our family dinner! So rich and chocolaty. My kids loved it! Thanks for sharing!

    2. User avatar stevie.zboncak83 says:

      3 stars
But what if I don’t have cherries? Can I just skip ’em? I wouldn’t wanna buy cherries for just this dessert. 🤷‍♂️

  64. User avatar gary.harris48 says:

    4 stars
Quick note: 12-15 minutes feels short for my oven, so I went to ~16 and it finally worked. Moral: watch the jiggle, not the clock.

  65. User avatar maurita.windler says:

    4 stars
I just used whatever chocolate I had at home – it was milk chocolate instead of dark. It turned out alright, but maybe not as rich? Still good, I’ll do it again.

  66. 5 stars
    choclate engufh!!! yumy!!!

    1. User avatar eddie.bogisich says:

      5 stars
Yesss! Chocolate is life! I’m totally making this recipe! 😍🍫

  67. 4 stars
Easier than I expected! I only had regular flour (not “all-purpose” labeled but basically same). Worked fine.

    1. User avatar butterfly says:

      5 stars
Nice! I’m glad the regular flour swap worked—this recipe is forgiving like that. Did you notice if the centers set the same, or stayed extra gooey?

  68. User avatar tommie.reynolds48 says:

    4 stars
Don’t use cheap chocolate! You really taste the difference. I learned the hard way. 😬

  69. 5 stars
I’ve made lava cakes before, but this one hits. The instructions are clear and the ratio looks on point. 12 minutes was my sweet spot—like 12.5 exactly.

  70. User avatar jeffery.sipes says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about the “lava” part, but yeah… it really worked. My ramekins leaked a little because I under-buttered, so next time I’ll go heavier on the butter/flour coating.

  71. 2 stars
What’s the deal with the oven temp? Why not just bake them at 400? Seems easier.

  72. User avatar emil.nienow says:

    1 star
This recipe is too complicated. I just wanted a quick dessert, not a science project! 🙄

  73. 1 star
Too complicated. I thought this would be easier. Maybe I’m not cut out for gourmet cooking. 😩

  74. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    5 stars
This recipe is a keeper! Made it for my date night and we were both blown away! YUMMM

  75. User avatar Orange Dartwing says:

These are great but super sweet. I think next time I’ll reduce the sugar a bit. Overall, loved the experience!

    1. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      4 stars
I totally agree, too sweet! Maybe try some dark chocolate instead? It’s less sweet than milk chocolate.

    2. User avatar Audie O'Keefe V says:

      2 stars
Sweet is good! Maybe you just don’t have a sweet tooth. I think the more sugar the better!

  76. User avatar benito.mills says:

    4 stars
Delicious! My husband loved it! But why do we need to sift the flour? Seems pointless.

  77. User avatar matthew.heathcote90 says:

    2 stars
Too much chocolate, imho. Are you sure it’s not too heavy? My stomach hurt after.

    1. User avatar shayna.wiegand67 says:

      4 stars
I think the chocolate is just right! You gotta have a rich dessert sometimes. Maybe just enjoy a smaller portion next time?

    2. User avatar tobias.terry says:

      3 stars
Nah, too much chocolate is never a thing! If your stomach hurts, try eating slower or getting a better quality chocolate.

  78. User avatar Gladys C. Hughes says:

    5 stars
Five stars? Maybe. I’m just impressed it works without fancy equipment. My kid even helped and we still got a decent result. Yum.

  79. 5 stars
Wow, these are amazing! The cherry in the middle is a game changer. Definitely making it again.

  80. User avatar earl.lubowitz says:

    4 stars
So glad I found this, my boyfriend loved it! Cherries and chocolate are a match made in heaven.

    1. User avatar remona.stark19 says:

Yum! I can totally see how cherries and chocolate are the perfect duo. Can’t wait to try this!

    2. User avatar marth.zboncak71 says:

      3 stars
I tried making it but it didn’t turn out like yours. The chocolate was too runny. What did I do wrong?

  81. User avatar Leatha Breitenberg says:

    2 stars
Too complicated for me. I don’t even own ramekins! Can’t someone make a regular cake version?

  82. User avatar Oscar Donnelly says:

    2 stars
I don’t know about this… my cakes came out really dense. Maybe I messed up somewhere.

    1. User avatar jeremy.larson2003 says:

      4 stars
Maybe try whisking the eggs and sugar better? It could help with the density. Don’t give up, these cakes are tricky but worth it!

  83. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! The lava cake was so rich and gooey, and the cherries added the perfect touch. Definitely making this again!

    1. User avatar Dr. Teddy Bode says:

      2 stars
I tried this recipe and it was a disaster! The cake didn’t rise at all. What did I do wrong?

    2. User avatar natashia.jones says:

      5 stars
Glad you loved it! The cherries really make it special. Can’t wait to try it myself!

  84. User avatar Terry Bull says:

    5 stars
Yum! Can I just eat the batter? So good! Maybe next time I’ll add nuts too.

  85. User avatar emelda.kihn25 says:

    5 stars
I followed the steps exactly (180°C, ramekins floured, bake 13 min). Lava is real! Only thing: next time I’ll pit a few extra cherries because everyone kept asking for more.

    1. User avatar sammy.mann43 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I love when it actually comes out lava-y. I always end up adding more cherries too—such a crowd-pleaser. Next time I’m trying extra centers like you said.

  86. User avatar hector.kirlin69 says:

    3 stars
meh, kinda just tastes like a brownie. Needs more flavor or something. Wasn’t as thrilling as I hoped.

  87. User avatar mikel.macgyver92 says:

    5 stars
I love chocolate! This is the best cake ever. My kids couldn’t get enough. Thanks for sharing!

  88. 3 stars
IDK man, mine came out burnt. Maybe my oven runs hot? 😩 Should’ve watched it more closely.

  89. User avatar kasandra.nader1962 says:

    1 star
Too much chocolate for my taste. I prefer vanilla desserts. 1 star.

  90. User avatar dwain.steuber2011 says:

    3 stars
Chocolate? Bad for health, right? But I eat it anyway, lol. 😜 3 stars for taste, but I feel guilty eating it.

  91. User avatar sha.botsford35 says:

    2 stars
My cake was raw inside after 15 mins. What did I do wrong? Should I put in more time?

    1. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

      3 stars
I thought these cakes cook faster! Mine came out gooey too, but I liked it. Maybe 15 mins just isn’t enough for some ovens?

    2. User avatar dorla.mante29 says:

      4 stars
It sounds like you might have underbaked it! The center should be jiggly, but not raw. Try baking it a bit longer, maybe watch it closely around the 15-minute mark.

  92. User avatar karl.weber says:

    5 stars
This recipe is a keeper! Perfect for impressing guests. Just make sure you have good chocolate!

    1. User avatar willie.gusikowski47 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Good chocolate makes all the difference. I used some fancy dark chocolate for mine and it turned out amazing. Definitely impresses everyone at the dinner table!

  93. User avatar jared.lynch says:

    1 star
Cherries? I thought they were strawberries in the picture. Confusing…

    1. User avatar Gormlaith says:

      5 stars
They look kinda similar, but cherries are way better! 🍒 Just gotta give it a try!

    2. 4 stars
I can see how that would be confusing! But the cherries are yum in the chocolate cake! Trust me, it’s a great combo.

  94. User avatar preston.farrell78 says:

    1 star
This was an absolute disaster! The cakes didn’t rise at all and were super dense. Not sure what went wrong!

  95. 1 star
Boy, this was a flop. Hard as a rock! I guess I forgot some sugar… not for me.

Can’t believe you put cherries! I subbed them for raspberries – they were pretty good too.

I had some trouble getting the cakes out of the ramekins. Maybe I didn’t butter them well enough? They tasted great though!

Couldn’t get smooth chocolate-butter at first. I probably had the water too hot, but after lowering the heat it came together. Worth it though.

I tried this, but it didn’t work out for me. My batter was too thick and the cakes didn’t rise! Maybe I did something wrong.

Mine exploded in the oven! What did I do wrong? Very sad about my lava fiasco. 😢

I followed the steps exactly and it flopped on me. What did I do wrong? I think I might give it another try one day.

Not what I expected. The center didn’t ooze as much as I thought it would. Anyone else have this issue?

Made these for dessert last night and they were *so* good—crispy edge, molten middle, and the cherries were perfect. Followed the timing pretty closely and nailed the jiggly center.

Yes!! This is exactly what I want from lava cake—crispy outside and that molten center. I’m tempted to add a little vanilla next time, but yours sounds perfect.

I tried this once and mine came out more like regular cake 😅 I think I overbaked it. How many mins did you do exactly—like 12 or closer to 15? Also did you really put 2 cherries per ramekin?

Wasn’t sure about the cherries in a chocolate cake, but surprisingly it worked! Still felt odd tho.

Um, I think you forgot to add the baking powder. Mine didn’t rise. Anyone else have this issue? 1 star.

Hmm, not sure about this one. Mine turned out too dense and not really lava-like. Maybe it was my oven? I give it a 3.

I followed the steps exactly, and they stuck to the ramekins even though I buttered and floured. Any tips? Flavor was great.

Really, how do you not overbake this?! Mine turned into a chocolate brick. No lava here, just cake.

The cherry surprise is perfect. I used sour cherries and they cut through the chocolate really nicely. Will definitely bake again.

My roommate said it tastes like a fancy restaurant thing. I didn’t tell them it was from a recipe online lol. 10/10.

I made this for my friend and it was a disaster. It didn’t rise at all! 2/5.

I followed the instructions to a T but my cakes overflowed! I guess I overfilled? 😩

Mine didn’t lava as much as I wanted—more like a rich chocolate cake. I think I might have overbaked by like a minute or two, because the centers weren’t jigglier.

Absolutely delicious! These lava cakes were a hit at my dinner party. Everyone loved the gooey center! 🍫❤️

How do you even ‘invert’ a cake? I just smashed it on the plate and it still tasted good, lol.

This cake was a hit with my kids! But why did they call it ‘lava’? It was more like a chocolate pudding… Still yum!

The instructions are clear, but 200g butter with 200g chocolate feels like a heart attack in a ramekin 😂 Still, flavor is incredible.
