Chocolate Covered Cherries

February 13, 2025

Chocolate covered cherries are a classic confection that combines the rich, smooth taste of chocolate with the sweet, juicy burst of cherries. These delightful treats are perfect for special occasions, holiday gifts, or simply a sweet indulgence whenever you’re craving something extra special. Whether you’re a cherry lover or a chocolate enthusiast, chocolate covered cherries are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth with their perfect balance of flavors and textures.

The process of making chocolate covered cherries is surprisingly simple, yet the result is pure decadence. The cherries, usually maraschino or fresh, are coated in a luscious layer of rich chocolate. The cherries’ natural juiciness complements the smooth, velvety chocolate coating, creating an irresistible contrast. The chocolate can be dark, milk, or white, depending on your personal preference, allowing for a customized treat that suits any taste.

To make these treats extra indulgent, some variations include adding a creamy filling like ganache or a sweetened liqueur-soaked center that enhances the cherry’s flavor and adds a touch of sophistication. The cherry is often encased in the chocolate, which hardens into a glossy, smooth shell as it cools, making every bite a rich, satisfying experience.

Chocolate covered cherries are perfect for gifting. Whether you package them in a beautiful box for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, or a birthday, they’re a thoughtful and delicious treat that’s sure to impress. They also make an elegant addition to any dessert table, adding a touch of sweetness and color to your spread.

This treat can also be customized to your taste. Try adding a sprinkle of sea salt on top to enhance the chocolate’s flavor, or dip them in crushed nuts or sprinkles for added texture. No matter how you make them, chocolate covered cherries are always a luxurious, sweet indulgence that never goes out of style.

I didn’t have fresh cherries, so I used canned. Not the same. Blech.

    1. User avatar kimberlee.metz60 says:

      4 stars
Canned cherries just don’t do the trick! Fresh is always best for this recipe.

    2. User avatar shirly.larkin says:

      2 stars
I don’t know, canned ones aren’t that bad. Just give it a try next time!

  6. User avatar nick.thompson45 says:

    choco chery nice!!! 🙂

  7. 1 star
Why do you have to pit the cherries? That seems like more work then it’s worth.

  8. 5 stars
These were a hit at my party! Everyone loved them. 😍

  9. User avatar philip.goodwin68 says:

    4 stars
Simple yet delicious! Just right for a sweet craving. I skipped the coconut oil, still turned out great!

Choco-cherries ROCK!! Will make again for sure.

    1. User avatar billy.wilkinson42 says:

      3 stars
Really? I found them a bit too sweet. Maybe next time I’ll skip the coconut oil.

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree! Choco-cherries are the best! I added some sea salt on top and it was divine.

  13. User avatar brittni.kovacek says:

    4 stars
I’m not a fan of dark chocolate, so I used milk chocolate instead. Still turned out yum!

    Choco cherry good!!! 🍒🍫

  15. User avatar genevive.stracke says:

    3 stars
Simple instructions! But my chocolate didn’t melt right, just ended up globby.

    1. User avatar lindsay.harris89 says:

      4 stars
Sounds like the chocolate was too hot or maybe you didn’t stir enough? I’ve had that happen too. You gotta keep an eye on it!

    2. User avatar Mr. Satan says:

      2 stars
Meh, it’s just chocolate. I usually just eat them fresh, no need for all this melting drama.

  16. 5 stars
These are AMAZING! Such a perfect treat for any occasion.

  17. User avatar tory.muller says:

    2 stars
Eh, I’ve had better. Dark choc is too bitter for me. Why not just use milk choc? 😕

  18. 4 stars
I dunno if this is healthy or not… but chocolate is chocolate, right? Lol. Don’t tell my diet!

  19. User avatar mitchel.fritsch89 says:

    2 stars
This recipe was disappointing. The chocolate didn’t stick to the cherries at all! Maybe need to dry them more?

  20. User avatar denis.schimmel1979 says:

    3 stars
I had a hard time melting the chocolate, it just kept clumping. Maybe I’m doing it wrong? 😅

    1. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

      5 stars
It sounds like you may not be stirring enough! When melting chocolate, give it a good stir after each interval to help prevent clumping. Hang in there! 🍫

    2. User avatar silvana.dach87 says:

      3 stars
I always have trouble too! Once I even burned it 😅. Maybe try using a double boiler? That seems to be easier than microwaving.

  21. User avatar Katherine O'Hara says:

    3 stars
They taste great, but why do you have to dry the cherries? It seems unnecessary.

  22. User avatar alma.sawayn2 says:

    4 stars
Do I really need the coconut oil? I skipped it and they turned out fine.

    1. 4 stars
You probably don’t need it! The chocolate should work fine on its own. Just make sure you melt it properly.

  23. User avatar joe_banana says:

    5 stars
These are the best! I made them for my family and they disappeared in seconds!

  24. 3 stars
Tried this with my kids and it was messy, but fun! They loved dipping the cherries, but too much chocolate for my taste.

  25. User avatar christiane.kautzer1962 says:

    4 stars
Yum! But can I use milk chocolate instead of dark? Asking for a friend.

  26. User avatar helen.hayes says:

    5 stars
Absolutely delicious! These chocolate-covered cherries were a hit at our party. I used a little sea salt on top for extra flavor. Will make again!

  27. User avatar Fenchurch says:

    4 stars
Super easy to make, but the cherries I bought were sour. Next time, I’ll pick better ones! 😅

  28. User avatar Death Hound says:

    5 stars
Who doesn’t love chocolate and cherries?! Perfect for date night! ❤️

    1. 3 stars
Really? Cherries are okay, but I’m not into dark chocolate much. Milk chocolate would be better.

    2. User avatar ike.schoen14 says:

      5 stars
Absolutely! 🍒🍫 This combo is just heavenly! Can’t wait to try it!

  29. User avatar Mr. Regena Price says:

    5 stars
    Cherries + chocolate = happiness! 🍒🍫

  30. 3 stars
I don’t know, mine turned out kind of messy and the chocolate didn’t stick well. Maybe I did something wrong?

  31. User avatar sheilah.reinger63 says:

    3 stars
3/5. Too much work for small payoff. Also my chocolate kept getting too thick while I dipped, so I had to remelt a lot.

    1. 3 stars
Yeah I had the same “thick chocolate” problem 😅. My first batch I didn’t dry the cherries enough and it seized up… then I remelted forever. Dry + remelt as needed is basically the whole battle.

    2. 4 stars
Totally get it. I found the dipping part the most annoying—especially when the chocolate cools fast. I started keeping it warm between dippings (like quick 10–15 sec bursts) and it helped a ton.

  32. User avatar ashley.glover63 says:

    5 stars
These are AMAZING! I made them for a party and they were gone in minutes.

  33. 4 stars
Not gonna lie I thought 15 minutes wasn’t enough, but it set fine in my fridge. I dipped slower and the coating was thicker.

  34. User avatar Draugr Overlord says:

    5 stars
These are amazing! Made them for a party and they disappeared in seconds! 🍒🍫

  35. User avatar odette.baumbach says:

    5 stars
These are so yummy! I made them for a party and everyone loved them. Will definitely make again!

  36. User avatar cristen.monahan42 says:

    5 stars
so easy!! but my husband thinks he can eat them all in one sitting! lol

    1. 5 stars
Haha, he’s definitely gonna need some self-control! These are so delicious. Enjoy them!

  37. User avatar cathleen.dickens says:

    1 star
Isn’t cherry covered chocolate just a cherry? This sounds silly to me. LOL!

  38. User avatar Frodo Baggins says:

    1 star
Cherries? Never been a fan. But my sister loved them! So, I guess it’s just me. 1 star.

    1. User avatar maira.schuster68 says:

      4 stars
I understand, cherries can be polarizing! But I love chocolate-covered ones! Maybe give it another try?

    2. User avatar keiko.haley1965 says:

      3 stars
You sound like you might not have a sweet tooth. That’s okay, more for us who love ’em!

  39. User avatar Miss Jaime Emard says:

    2 stars
Easy and quick. But I don’t get why they need coconut oil. What’s that even for?

  40. User avatar renea.connelly says:

    4 stars
Microwave instructions are fine, but 30-second intervals feel like it could burn easily. I did mine in shorter bursts and that helped. Would make again.

  41. User avatar pia.gulgowski39 says:

    3 stars
Chocolate and cherries? Sounds weird to me. Are people really into this? 🤔

  42. User avatar Brand-shei says:

    5 stars
I added some sea salt on top. OMG, a game changer! So good!

  43. User avatar ashley.pacocha5 says:

    5 stars
Just tried this recipe, and my kids loved it! Chocolate + cherries = perfection.

  44. User avatar columbus.berge says:

    5 stars
Soo good, but I used milk chocolate by mistake and it was still yum! More cherries next time!

    1. User avatar Fredericka Veum says:

      5 stars
Glad to hear it worked out with milk chocolate! I bet the cherries were even sweeter. 🍒❤️

    2. 2 stars
Milk chocolate? That’s kinda weird for this recipe… I dunno, sounds like it wouldn’t taste as good. Dark’s the best!

  45. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    3 stars
I think chocolate covered strawberries are better, tbh.

    1. User avatar Jarvan IV says:

      5 stars
Nah, cherries are way yum! Strawberries can be too sweet sometimes.

    2. User avatar matthew.thiel1971 says:

      4 stars
Chocolate covered strawberries are good too, but cherries are a nice change! More like a burst of flavor, right?

  46. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    3 stars
Lol, melted chocolate everywhere! Why it so messy? But, they taste good tho.

  47. 2 stars
I don’t get it. How can chocolate and cherries be that good together? I’m skeptical.

  48. User avatar Feyd-Rautha Rabban says:

    5 stars
WOW! Best dessert ever. Sooo good! I’m gonna make them again next week!

    1. User avatar fernande.schinner1990 says:

      5 stars
I agree! These are so tasty and super easy to make! I love how the chocolate melts in my mouth. 🍫🍒

    2. 3 stars
Really? I found them a bit too sweet for my taste. Maybe I’m just not a cherry person.

  49. User avatar marvis.gottlieb56 says:

    5 stars
Super easy to make! I let my kids dip the cherries, and they loved it!

  50. User avatar annie.green says:

    2 stars
Too sweet for my taste. I think they’d be better with milk chocolate instead of dark. 🌟🌟🌟

  51. User avatar janeen.goyette says:

    4 stars
These are so good! I used milk chocolate instead of dark and it worked well.

    1. 3 stars
But isn’t dark chocolate supposed to be healthier? Milk chocolate seems kinda cheat-y to me.

    2. User avatar rich.hoeger1993 says:

      5 stars
I love that you used milk chocolate! It’s sweeter and makes it taste like candy. Yum!

  52. User avatar Hagraven says:

    3 stars
Why do y’all use coconut oil? What’s that for? Seems unnecessary to me. 🤷

  53. 5 stars
Yum, I can eat these by the dozen! Perfect for my sweet tooth. A+

  54. User avatar Wellington Yueh says:

    4 stars
Yummm! But I used milk chocolate instead. Will that ruin it? Just a thought.

  55. User avatar Mr. Carlene Conroy says:

    4 stars
Just a word of advice: don’t skip the coconut oil, it really makes a difference in texture!

  56. User avatar roberto.kertzmann says:

    2 stars
I thought chocolate was for donuts, not fruit. Weird combo.

  57. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    5 stars
The best treat ever!! I make these every holiday!! So easy and so tasty! ❤️❤️❤️

  58. User avatar lorenzo.mosciski20 says:

    5 stars
These turned out way better than I expected—super shiny and not too sweet. I’ll definitely make them again for gifting.

  59. User avatar brynn.collins99 says:

    2 stars
Kinda bland? Like the cherries disappear under the chocolate. I might add a pinch of salt or orange zest next time.

  60. User avatar ruthann.tremblay81 says:

    5 stars
Amazing!!! So easy and yummy. Best treat for a party! 🍒🍫

    1. User avatar lowell.crooks35 says:

      3 stars
They look delicious but how do you keep the chocolate from cracking? Mine always does. 😕

    2. User avatar magali.hansen says:

      5 stars
I made these for my kid’s birthday and they were a hit! So good! 🎉

  61. 3 stars
Pretty good, but my chocolate seized a bit—maybe my cherries weren’t dry enough. Next time I’ll blot them longer. Still tasty though.

  62. User avatar Pasta Fasta says:

    5 stars
This recipe is a game changer! My family devoured these cherries in no time. Especially great for holidays!

  63. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

I tried this recipe but used milk chocolate instead. They turned out too sweet for my taste.

    1. User avatar everett.nikolaus says:

      3 stars
Sounds yummy! But I do agree, milk chocolate is way sweeter. My grandma has a similar recipe but uses white chocolate instead. I just can’t with that level of sweetness though!

    2. 4 stars
I think milk chocolate might just be too much sweetness for this recipe! Dark chocolate balances the tartness of the cherries perfectly. Maybe give it another try with dark chocolate?

  64. User avatar richie.kautzer34 says:

    5 stars
These are heavenly! Just made a batch and they vanished in minutes! 🍒🍫

I’m so glad to hear that! These cherries are a hit in my house too! 🍒

    2. User avatar ashely.bartell says:

      3 stars
They sound good, but I dunno about that chocolate. Isn’t it kinda bitter?

  67. User avatar Lemuel Ortiz says:

    2 stars
I found this to be way too sweet. Not a fan of the dark chocolate with cherries.

  68. 3 stars
Mmm, I’m not sure I did it right. Mine didn’t look as nice as the picture but they tasted fine.

    1. User avatar gino.schulist33 says:

      5 stars
Don’t worry! They may not look perfect, but as long as they taste good, that’s what counts!

    2. User avatar wellRespected says:

      4 stars
Looks don’t matter! I mean, mine looked awful too but my fam gobbled them up. You’ll get better with practice!

Yum! My kid ate 5 in one go! This is now our go-to treat for movie night. 💖

  70. User avatar Falmer Spellsword says:

    2 stars
Not bad but I messed up the melting part, didn’t read the recipe right 😅.

  71. User avatar milton.kassulke53 says:

    3 stars
They were ok, but the chocolate didn’t stick to the cherries very well. Maybe I did something wrong?

    1. User avatar Glossu "Beast" Rabban says:

      4 stars
Maybe try drying them extra or use a little more chocolate? That helped me before!

  72. 5 stars
These were a hit at the party! So easy to make and everyone loved them! 🍫🍒

  73. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    2 stars
They looked great, but my chocolate didn’t melt well. I must’ve done something wrong. 😕

    1. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

      3 stars
Ugh, I hate when that happens! I think you might’ve used too high of a temp. Just try again, chocolate ain’t that hard to work with!

    2. User avatar kelsi.hahn93 says:

      5 stars
Don’t worry! Melting chocolate can be tricky sometimes. Make sure you microwave it in small intervals and stir well. It can seize up if overheated. You’ll get it right next time! 😊

  74. 5 stars
Not gonna lie, cherries + chocolate is kinda my weakness 😅 The texture was great. I might add a pinch of salt next time just to see.

  75. User avatar patricia.yost says:

    5 stars
This recipe is really simple! I can’t cook well but I nailed these! 👏

  76. User avatar deon.leuschke1999 says:

    5 stars
These came out way better than I expected. The “dry the cherries” step is real—if they’re even slightly wet, the chocolate gets weird. Mine set in about 20 minutes, but still totally worth it.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! The wet cherry problem is real. I learned the hard way—mine turned streaky and grainy. Now I pat them forever 😂

    2. 3 stars
Mine took like an hour to set in the fridge… I think my cherries were too juicy and I didn’t dry them enough. Still tasted good tho. Maybe I should add more coconut oil?

  77. 4 stars
Not bad at all! I used semi-sweet chocolate instead of dark and it tasted richer. 15 minutes in the fridge was enough for me.

  78. User avatar wilhemina.hilpert2021 says:

    4 stars
I thought this was a joke recipe, but it actually works. Surprised! 😏

  79. User avatar myles.beer says:

    3 stars
How long do they last in the fridge? Asking for a friend!

  80. User avatar lucrecia.willms2022 says:

    1 star
No offense, but cherries are overrated. I didn’t like these at all LOL.
