Chicken and white bean soup with pesto is one of those comfort meals that hits all the right notes, hearty, satisfying, and full of flavor. It’s the kind of soup that makes you feel warm and nourished, while still being light enough to enjoy year-round.
The base of the soup starts with tender chunks of chicken, creamy white beans, and aromatic vegetables like onions, carrots, and celery. These ingredients simmer together in a rich broth that soaks up all the goodness. White beans not only add creaminess but also pack in plant-based protein and fiber, making this soup filling without feeling heavy.
But what really makes this soup special is the pesto. A generous spoonful stirred in right before serving gives the whole dish a vibrant lift. The bright flavors of fresh basil, garlic, and Parmesan add depth and complexity that you don’t usually find in traditional chicken soup. You can use store-bought pesto if you’re short on time, or make your own if you have fresh basil on hand, either way, it’s a flavor upgrade you won’t want to skip.
For even more substance, you can add in a handful of greens like spinach or kale at the end of cooking. They wilt perfectly into the hot broth and add a pop of color and nutrients. If you like a bit of heat, a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes can take the flavor up a notch.
This soup is a great meal prep option too. It stores well in the fridge and tastes even better the next day as the flavors continue to develop. Serve it with crusty bread, a sprinkle of grated cheese, or an extra drizzle of pesto on top for a delicious finishing touch.
Whether you’re looking for an easy dinner or something cozy to curl up with on a chilly evening, chicken and white bean soup with pesto brings comfort and brightness together in one bowl.

I’m not really a fan of beans, so I left them out. The soup was kinda bland. I guess I need to follow the recipe next time… 2/5.
I just made this and I’m literally crying it’s so good. 😭❤️
Crying over soup? Really? 🤨 I mean, it’s good, but come on! This is just soup.
I’m so glad to hear that! This soup really warms the heart. Did you tweak it at all? 😍
Great recipe!! I made it for my kids and they loved it. It’s not too hard and doesn’t take long. Will make again!
I’m so glad to hear your kids loved it! This soup is a winner for sure. 👏
This is the kind of meal I can do on a weeknight. One pot, cheap-ish ingredients, and it smells amazing. I added extra garlic bc I’m that person.
I’m a soup person and this hit the spot. Also, the veggies smell so good while they’re softening. Next time I might add spinach at the end.
I tried something similar but my veggies took way longer than 5 mins… maybe my pot was too low. Also I added spinach at the end like you said and it worked great. Would make again!
Yes! I’m also a soup person and this sounds exactly like the cozy kind. The pesto topping is such a great finishing touch—adds flavor without extra effort.
Made this tonight—so cozy and honestly super easy. Browning the chicken in step 2 gave it great flavor. I didn’t have enough pesto, but even a little swirl tasted awesome.
So simple and easy to make! Only took me like 30 minutes. Will make again.
Chickens in soup? Isn’t that weird? I mean, it sounds fancy but I dunno…
Simple and quick! I added extra garlic because I love it. Yummm!
Didn’t have chicken, so I used turkey. It was still good but not the same. I’ll try it with chicken next time!
I think it’s cool you tried turkey! I bet it added a unique flavor. Chicken is classic tho!
Turkey? Seriously? It’s not the same, that’s for sure! Chicken is way better in this soup.
I followed it pretty closely but mine came out more like thin broth than soup—probably my beans weren’t draining well. Tasted good though. Next time I’ll mash a ladle of beans to thicken.
That makes sense—if the beans weren’t drained well (or were more watery), it would stay pretty brothy. Mashing a ladleful is a great fix! Also, you could simmer a bit longer after adding the beans to let it thicken naturally.
Soo good! My kids gobbled it up, and I didn’t need to fight with them for once!
Pretty good, but I think it needs a little extra seasoning. I used salt/pepper “to taste” and ended up adding more at the end. Also simmering longer (like 30 min) made the carrots softer.
Totally agree on the seasoning—soups like this really wake up with a bit more salt/pepper at the end. I also find the carrots can use extra time depending on how big you dice them.
Hmm maybe my simmer time was off but 30 min made mine kinda mushy. I did add more salt at the end though, so you’re not wrong. Pesto on top is a must!
This soup is so good! Perfect comfort food for cold nights. I added some spinach too, yum!
I love hearing that you added spinach! I bet it made the soup even healthier. Can’t wait to try it myself.
Yum! I love the combination of chicken and beans. Definitely a keeper!
I agree! Chicken and beans make such a tasty combo. Can’t wait to try this recipe!
Chicken broth and beans?! Isn’t that kinda weird? I prefer my soups to be more… authentic?
Too salty for my taste. Maybe I added too much broth? I don’t know. But the recipe was easy.
This recipie is a little too healthy for my taste. I might try it with cream instead of broth next time.
AAAAAAAAAHH! I accidentally spilled the beans in before the chicken was done!! It still turned out fine tho!!
Haha, sometimes the best things happen by accident! Glad it turned out well for you! 😊
Tastes good but I forgot the thyme, so not sure how it would be different. Still yummy.
I dunno man… kinda underwhelming. It’s just soup after all. Is it really that special?
I get what you’re saying, but it’s all about the flavors! The pesto adds a nice kick. You might be surprised if you give it a shot.
I followed the recipe but it turned out kinda bland. Needed more spices, maybe some cayenne pepper? Just a thought.
I think adding cayenne would definitely kick it up a notch! Spices are super important for flavor. Maybe try some paprika too!
Bland? I thought it was great! But I guess everyone has different tastes. Maybe you just need to season it better next time.
Why do you put beans in soup? I just want chicken and broth! 🤷♂️
Adding beans gives it a nice texture and extra protein! You might like it if you give it a chance. 😊
Beans? Huh? I don’t get it. Chicken soup should just be simple chicken and broth! 🤷♂️
Delicious! I added some spinach at the end for extra greens. Mmm 😋
Absolutely delicious! This soup is a hit in my house. 😍
Not gonna lie, the chicken browned fine but the soup felt kinda watery after. Next time I’ll use less broth or mash a few beans to thicken it.
Heck yeah! This is the best soup ever! 🤗
I’m skeptical about using pesto only at serving time. It tastes fine, but I feel like it could disappear if you don’t warm it—also I used no-salt beans and still had to add more salt at the end.
Quick to prepare but my chicken got dry. Maybe next time I’ll reduce the cooking time.
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about putting pesto on top instead of into the soup. I tried it once and thought it tasted kind of separate. Flavor wasn’t bad, just different.
