Chai Latte

October 3, 2024

A Chai Latte is the perfect cozy drink that combines the warmth of spiced tea with the creamy richness of milk, offering a delightful balance of sweet, spicy, and smooth. Originating from India, chai is traditionally a black tea brewed with aromatic spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and ginger. When combined with steamed milk, it transforms into a comforting beverage that’s both indulgent and invigorating. Whether you’re enjoying it on a chilly morning or as an afternoon pick-me-up, a chai latte brings warmth and a burst of flavor in every sip.

What makes a chai latte so special is the aromatic spice blend that fills the air with warmth and comfort. The base of the tea is strong, but the spices elevate it with just the right balance of heat and sweetness. The cinnamon and cardamom give it a warm, slightly sweet undertone, while the ginger adds a subtle kick, making each sip a soothing yet energizing experience. The creamy milk softens the spices, creating a velvety texture that makes this drink feel like a comforting hug in a cup.

One of the best things about a chai latte is how customizable it is. You can adjust the sweetness to your liking by adding honey, sugar, or even maple syrup. For a dairy-free option, simply swap regular milk for almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk. If you prefer a stronger spice flavor, feel free to add extra cinnamon or a pinch of nutmeg. A shot of espresso can also be added to make it a chai latte with a caffeine boost, known as a dirty chai latte.

Making a chai latte at home is surprisingly easy. All you need is a chai concentrate or tea bags, some milk, and a sweetener of your choice. Simply brew the chai, steam the milk, and combine the two for a satisfying drink that rivals any coffee shop creation. You can even top it with a sprinkle of cinnamon or a dollop of whipped cream for extra indulgence.

Whether you’re enjoying it solo or with friends, a chai latte is a perfect way to take a moment to relax and indulge in the warming flavors of fall and winter.

Perfect for a rainy day! I made it twice this week already. ☕️

Chai latte? More like chai LAME-te. It’s just tea with milk, not worth the hype if ya ask me.

  3. User avatar wade.oreilly says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have cardamom so I used cinnamon only, and it was still decent, but yeah… missing that chai depth.

    1. User avatar irmgard.damore49 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, cinnamon’s fine, but cardamom really does give that warm, floral “chai” thing. Next time maybe try grinding a couple crushed pods even if you’re out—totally changes it.

  4. User avatar robert.legros says:

    3 stars
Too much clove for my taste. Next time I’ll cut the cloves in half—otherwise it’s a nice brew.

  5. User avatar neta.reichert says:

    5 stars
Yum! I love chai! Way better than coffee. Gonna make this all the time.

  6. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    2 stars
What’s the point of chai if you’re not using fresh spices? I used powder and it just didn’t taste right.

  7. 2 stars
Way too spicy for me with all the whole cloves. I’d use like 1 clove next time or remove them earlier. Otherwise flavor was nice.

  8. User avatar joseph.daniel83 says:

    5 stars
This chai latte taste like real chai I had back in India. 10/10 would recommend!

  9. User avatar glendora.mertz2006 says:

    4 stars
I used almond milk and it turned out great! A little different but still delish.

  10. User avatar Elmer Sklue says:

    5 stars
Really cozy. I used whole milk and simmered a touch longer because I like it stronger. The cinnamon stick flavor came through nicely.

    1. User avatar Super Saiyan Gohan says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Whole milk always makes it extra creamy. I also simmer a bit longer when I want that deeper chai taste—so glad the cinnamon came through for you.

    2. User avatar palmer.klocko2004 says:

      3 stars
Sounds nice, but I’m not sure about simmering longer. Won’t the tea get bitter and overpower the cardamom? I tried it once and it tasted a bit “burnt” even though I didn’t mean to.

  11. User avatar marguerite.daniel99 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe but mine ended up tasting weird. Maybe I did something wrong?

  12. 4 stars
I can’t believe how easy this was! Perfect on a rainy day.

    1. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad you found it easy! Chai is really comforting on a chilly day. ☕️

  13. 3 stars
I tried this and somehow my milk boiled over… so not perfect lol. Flavor was still great though, just need to watch the pot.

    1. User avatar claretha.cummerata says:

      3 stars
lol mine didn’t boil over but I think I used too much ginger? or maybe the cardamom… I tossed in like “1 pinch” and it tasted like perfume. Still, it was pretty good. Next time I’ll watch it closer and maybe use a smaller amount of sugar too.

    2. 4 stars
Ugh, milk boil-over is so real 😭—especially with small saucepans. I’ve learned to keep it at a gentle simmer instead of a hard boil. Try heating the milk just until it starts bubbling, then turn it down right away.

  14. User avatar Spider Worker says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have cinnamon stick, so I used ground cinnamon. It was kinda gritty, but the flavor was still nice. Straining helps a lot.

    1. User avatar Oolon Colluphid says:

      3 stars
Wait… 10 minutes and then strain—doesn’t that make it weak? I usually just boil harder so the spices get stronger. Ground cinnamon works too though.

    2. User avatar wellRespected says:

      5 stars
Good save! Ground cinnamon can add flavor but it tends to settle and feel gritty—straining really is the fix.

  15. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    3 stars
Is there really a difference if I don’t use fresh ginger? Can I just use powder? Asking for a friend.

  16. User avatar lashonda.champlin27 says:

    5 stars
This chai latte is amazing! Just like the ones from the cafe. Will make it again!

    1. User avatar colin.gutmann1987 says:

      5 stars
So glad you liked it! Chai latte is the best way to start the day. ☕️

    2. User avatar demetrius.witting says:

      2 stars
Really? I tried it and it tasted weird. Maybe I messed up some steps? 🤔

  17. User avatar tara.hodkiewicz77 says:

    3 stars
This recipe is simple, but I might leave out the ginger next time. Just personal taste!

  18. User avatar sonya.gerlach says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but I didn’t strain super carefully—still turned out good though. The cardamom + cloves combo is strong in a great way.

  19. 4 stars
I’m confused about “1 pinch ginger” — I did like 1/4 tsp and it was perfect. Without enough ginger it felt a bit flat to me.

  20. User avatar richie.hintz94 says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe and it was alright, but not as flavorful as the ones I get at my favorite cafe. Need more spice, maybe more ginger?

  21. User avatar loni.stark19 says:

    4 stars
I gotta say I was skeptical, but this recipe changed my mind. Will definitely make again!

  22. User avatar adan.larkin says:

    5 stars
This tastes exactly like the chai places near me—warm, spiced, not too sweet. I used 1 tsp sugar and it was perfect. 10/10!

  23. 4 stars
Skipped the ginger coz I hate it and it still tasted good!

    1. User avatar terina.homenick1976 says:

      2 stars
No ginger? How can that even be chai? Sounds like tea with milk. But hey, if it worked for you, more power to ya!

    2. User avatar Thufir Hawat says:

      4 stars
Glad to hear it still turned out tasty! Ginger can be hit or miss for people. What other spices did you add?

  24. 2 stars
What the heck is cardamom? Is it really necessary? I just threw in some regular black tea and it worked fine for me.

  25. User avatar Majin Vegeta says:

    4 stars
I followed it exactly and it turned out balanced. Cardamom + clove is a winning combo. Mine smelled like a café.

    1. User avatar terrence.goldner74 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That combo really does work. The cardamom/cinnamon/clove balance is exactly what makes it taste like a real café chai. I’m glad you nailed it.

    2. 3 stars
I tried chai once and it tasted kinda like medicine lol—maybe I used too much clove. Your “café” smell makes me wanna try again but I’ll do less clove next time.

  26. User avatar serita.veum93 says:

    5 stars
Sooo good. I drank it all by myself! 🤗

  27. User avatar Shyla Cummings says:

    4 stars
I thought this would be hard, but it was super easy! I used almond milk instead, and it still tasted great.

    1. User avatar virgen.ferry56 says:

      4 stars
Wow, almond milk? Didn’t think that would work! Glad it turned out good for you!

  28. User avatar heide.schuppe says:

    5 stars
Absolutely love it! It’s perfect for those chilly nights.

  29. User avatar Hillman Hunter says:

    2. User avatar lyla.heidenreich1985 says:

      2 stars
I don’t know… sounds like too much work for a drink. Just buy it from a cafe! 🙄

  30. User avatar rayford.beahan says:

    3 stars
Just made this! kinda basic, but okay 3/5

  31. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    1 star
I dunno, I just don’t get the fuss about chai. Coffee is way better.

  32. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

    3 stars
I tried this but it came out too sweet for me. Maybe less sugar next time.

    1. User avatar tristan.haag34 says:

      2 stars
Less sugar? That’s not chai anymore, that’s just milk with spices! 🤔

    2. 4 stars
I totally agree, it was way too sweet! I ended up adding more tea to balance it out.

  33. User avatar jorge.damore says:

    5 stars
Best chai I’ve ever made! and I’ve made a lot, just like my grandma taught me. It brings back memories!

  34. User avatar eldon.bailey67 says:

    5 stars
yummmm!! just made it and my entire house smells amazing! thank you!

    1. User avatar Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta says:

      5 stars
This sounds delicious! I can’t wait to try it myself! Thanks for sharing!

  35. User avatar Fidel Beatty says:

    3 stars
Mine was kinda bland until I added “to taste” sugar. I know that’s obvious, but I measured the 1 tbsp and expected more. Lessons learned 😅

  36. 5 stars
Chai? More like chaaaah, this drink is lit! 🔥💖

  37. User avatar Effrafax of Wug says:

    2 stars
I don’t think this tastes like real chai. Too much milk, maybe? I prefer mine spiced more.

  38. 5 stars
This chai latte is absolutely amazing! The spices blend so well together. Perfect on a rainy day.

    1. 3 stars
Hmm, is it really that great? My chai never tastes like the cafe’s. Maybe I’m doin it wrong? 🤔

    2. User avatar desire.batz says:

      5 stars
I tried this recipe and it turned out fantastic! I love how the spices pop! Perfect for cozy nights.

  39. 3 stars
The measurements feel off to me: 1 cup water + 1 cup milk is a lot of liquid for only 2 teaspoons tea. Tasted kinda mild. Might increase tea next time.

  40. User avatar zoe.morissette says:

    2 stars
Way too strong for me. The cloves totally took over, and I couldn’t taste the tea. Maybe I should’ve used fewer spices or less steep time.

  41. User avatar graciela.ritchie1975 says:

    4 stars
Yum! Perfect for chilly evenings. I added some vanilla too, and it was delicious!

    1. 5 stars
I never thought of adding vanilla! I’ll have to try that next time. Thanks for the idea!

  42. User avatar myriam.barrows says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe and it was too sweet for me. I think I would skip the sugar next time.

  43. User avatar sandra.murazik47 says:

    3 stars
I’m not really a fan of tea but my friend loved it! So I’ll give it a decent rating.

    1. User avatar halflife4 says:

      5 stars
Glad to hear your friend liked it! I love chai, it’s the best!

  44. User avatar reginald.sauer says:

    3 stars
This is nice but 2 cloves feels like a lot? I got a little “medicinal” note. Next time I’ll start with 1 clove and see.

    1. 4 stars
Medicinal note is real with cloves 😅 I’d start with 1 clove like you said. Also make sure they’re whole (not ground) or it gets even punchier.

    2. User avatar Su Shenlong says:

      5 stars
I agree—2 cloves is strong. I usually do 1 and it’s plenty. If it tastes medicinal, just cut back next time or simmer a bit shorter.

  45. 2 stars
I don’t think it tastes like the chai from my favorite cafe. Might be the spices? I wasn’t impressed.

  46. User avatar jacquie.mayer54 says:

    4 stars
I think boiling the milk and water together makes it foam like crazy. Mine boiled over a bit. Still tasted good though—just watch it.

  47. User avatar vern.mertz1955 says:

    2 stars
Chai? More like trying to make a mess in the kitchen!

  48. User avatar abram.hessel67 says:

    3 stars
I added vanilla and it didn’t taste like chai anymore. 😅 But still good.

  49. User avatar Tamie Stark says:

    3 stars
Too much cardamom for my taste! I reduced it next time but still didn’t like it much.

  50. 3 stars
Not sure about boiling the milk with water first… I got a slight skin on top. Still tasted fine, just annoying.

  51. User avatar hilario.flatley says:

    4 stars
Um, can u just use instant tea for this? Seems like a lot of hassle.

    1. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

      4 stars
You could use instant tea, but it won’t taste the same! The spices really make it special.

    2. User avatar dewayne.johns says:

      2 stars
Why go through all that? Just pour hot water on the instant tea and be done with it! 😂

  52. User avatar rochell.kuhn19 says:

    2 stars
What’s the point? Just buy a latte at Starbucks. Too much work for a drink!

  53. User avatar winston.goldner72 says:

    3 stars
Is it okay to use evaporated milk instead? Coz that’s all I got! 🤔

  54. User avatar addie.feeney says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe but I added some vanilla too. It was eh. Just not my thing.

  55. User avatar Belkis Oberbrunner IV says:

    3 stars
I followed the instructions but my “boil” was more like a lazy simmer, so maybe that’s why it didn’t taste very strong. Still comforting though.

  56. 4 stars
I followed it but ended up simmering closer to 15 minutes because I got distracted. Still great—more “chai” flavor. Next time I’ll steep a bit shorter.

  57. User avatar rosy.keeling51 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have cloves, so I left em out, but it still tasted good. Can’t go wrong with chai!

  58. 4 stars
Too sweet for my taste. I prefer it without sugar! Still delicious though!

  59. 4 stars
Pretty good, but I think 2 teaspoons tea leaves might be a bit strong for me. Next time I’ll start with 1 teaspoon and add more if needed.

  60. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    2 stars
Is it really chai if you don’t use condensed milk? Just sayin’.

  61. User avatar son.hamill9 says:

    4 stars
Delicious. I added nutmeg instead of ginger, turned out excellent.

    1. User avatar lacie.gleichner says:

      2 stars
Why would you replace ginger? Ginger is what makes chai! I don’t think nutmeg works the same.

    2. User avatar candace.stamm72 says:

      5 stars
That sounds interesting! Nutmeg can give it a unique twist. I might try that next time!

  62. 5 stars
This chai latte is amazing! Super cozy and warming. I added some vanilla and it was perfect!

  63. User avatar aracely.kiehn52 says:

    3 stars
I like chai, but yall need to calm down with the spices. Too strong!

    1. User avatar ming.gaylord1966 says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you’re saying! Sometimes it can be way too much. Maybe try less spice next time?

  64. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    5 stars
This chai latte is absolutely delicious! I added some honey instead of sugar and it turned out great!

  65. User avatar antonia.carter says:

    5 stars
Wow this is so yummy! Finally, I can sip a warm drink without going to a cafe! Thanks!

  66. User avatar alexander.stokes61 says:

    5 stars
    Yum! Just wow!

    1. 5 stars
This sounds amazing! Can’t wait to try it myself! 😍

  67. User avatar dylan.kshlerin says:

    2 stars
I had no cinnamon stick so I used a toast, tasted weird. What did I do wrong?

    1. User avatar nicolas.morar says:

      4 stars
Using toast instead of a cinnamon stick? That’s a unique choice! I think that’s what threw the flavor off. Might wanna stick to the recipe next time!

  68. 5 stars
Wow. Easy and tastes real. ❤️

  69. User avatar clement.schinner says:

    5 stars
Made this today and it smelled like a café. I used whole milk and 1 tbsp sugar—perfect balance, not too sweet.

  70. User avatar Reuben Sipes says:

    5 stars
Yum! I just added ice and made it iced. Best summer drink ever! 🍹

  71. User avatar lavern.oberbrunner says:

    5 stars
So comforting! I used whole milk and let it steep a full 12 minutes—came out super fragrant. The spices make the whole cup taste “real” chai.

    1. User avatar Feyd-Rautha Rabban says:

      5 stars
Yes! That longer steep really pulls the aroma out. I’ve also found whole milk makes it way creamier—“real chai” is spot on.

  72. 1 star
I don’t think ginger belongs in chai. That’s just wrong.

    1. 4 stars
I disagree! Ginger adds a nice kick to chai. Try it before knocking it. 😊

  73. User avatar kandra.kuhn35 says:

    3 stars
Idk, chai is kinda overrated to me, but this recipe is solid. The ratios seem right. I’d just cut the sugar in half.

    1. User avatar rosina.connelly93 says:

      3 stars
Wait, if you cut sugar in half, will it still taste like chai? I always thought it needed a lot. Maybe 1/2 tablespoon? Idk lol.

    2. User avatar Robbyn Kovacek IV says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—chai can be super overrated. This one looks balanced though. Cutting the sugar in half is probably the move for sure.

  74. User avatar graciela.terry34 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid! I only simmered a bit longer (closer to 15 min) and it tasted a little stronger, which I liked. Next time I’ll probably use a touch less sugar though.

    1. 4 stars
I tried this and… mine came out too intense? I think I let it go like 20 min 😅 Still tasted good though. Next time I’ll follow closer to 10 and start with less sugar like you said.

    2. 5 stars
Agree—simmering a bit longer really brings out the spice punch. I like it stronger too, but I usually cut the sugar to 3/4 tbsp so it doesn’t get too sweet.

  75. 5 stars
This chai is so good! The spices really come through.

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! The spices make it feel so warm and cozy. Perfect for rainy days!

  76. User avatar eunice.schoen62 says:

    3 stars
I don’t really get the whole straining step—can’t I just drink with the spices? My tea ended up a little gritty even after straining. Flavor was good otherwise.

  77. User avatar quintin.klein says:

    3 stars
How many cups does this make? I feel like it’s not enough for me and my friends! Lol!

  78. User avatar dennis.deckow says:

    3 stars
Honestly, what’s the deal with chai lattes? I don’t get the hype. Just make tea with milk, right?

    1. User avatar tamera.macejkovic says:

      3 stars
Nah, it’s not just tea with milk. There’s a whole vibe with chai lattes! The spices really make it different. You gotta try it the right way!

    2. User avatar granville.ankunding16 says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you’re saying! It’s just tea with milk and spices. But chai has this unique blend that makes it special. Give it a try, it might surprise you!

  79. User avatar malissa.rippin says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about “any type” of milk. Oat milk made it taste weirdly sweet and chalky for me, but regular dairy was great.

  80. User avatar Bilbo Baggins says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid recipe! I didn’t have cardamom pods so I used a little ground cardamom. Still came out warm and spicy.
