Caramel Apples

November 13, 2024

Caramel apples are a classic fall treat that brings together the sweet, tangy crunch of apples with the rich, buttery goodness of caramel. They’re perfect for Halloween, Thanksgiving, or any cozy autumn occasion, offering a delightful combination of textures and flavors that are hard to resist.

To make these apples, you start by selecting firm, crisp apples, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, which provide a perfect balance of tartness and crunch. The apples are washed and dried thoroughly, and the stems are removed, often replaced with wooden sticks for easy handling.

The caramel coating is made by melting together butter, brown sugar, heavy cream, and a pinch of salt, creating a smooth, glossy sauce that will coat the apples beautifully. Once the caramel is melted and has reached the right consistency, the apples are dipped into the sauce, ensuring they’re evenly coated. The caramel will set quickly, forming a thick, shiny layer around each apple.

For added flair, the apples can be rolled in toppings like crushed nuts (pecans, walnuts, or peanuts), mini chocolate chips, sprinkles, or even a drizzle of melted chocolate. These toppings not only add extra texture and flavor but also make the apples visually appealing, turning them into an indulgent treat that’s as much fun to make as it is to eat.

These apples are best enjoyed fresh, with the sweet caramel paired with the tartness of the apple creating a satisfying contrast in every bite. They’re a nostalgic fall treat that brings back memories of carnival stands and crisp autumn days.

For drinks, pair wonderfully with hot apple cider, a glass of warm spiced wine, or even a creamy vanilla milkshake for a sweet indulgence.

Whether you’re making them for a fall party, as a gift, or simply to enjoy at home, caramel apples are a delicious and festive treat that never fails to bring a smile.

These caramel apples turned out AMAZING! The caramel was so gooey and delicious! My kids loved them. Definitely making again!

  2. 2 stars
I tried this recipe but the caramel didn’t set right. It was too runny. Maybe I cooked it wrong? Not sure. Disappointed.

    1. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

      4 stars
I’ve had issues with caramel too! It’s tricky sometimes. Make sure you let it cook long enough to reach that soft-ball stage, or it might not set properly. Don’t be too hard on yourself!

  3. User avatar Arthur Philip Deodat says:

    4 stars
Easy and tasty but the stick slipping thing happened 😅 I dried the apples, but the first one slid out right after dipping. Otherwise would recommend.

    1. User avatar arnita.heidenreich says:

      5 stars
Ugh yes, that’s always the scary moment 😅 Next time try chilling the apples in the fridge for 10–15 min before dipping, and make sure the stick is seated deep. Also dip slower—less tugging right after.

I don’t think this is a very healthy recipe… but they sure do taste good. Moderation!

I get what you mean! These are a guilty pleasure for sure. Just gotta enjoy them occasionally.

  5. 2 stars
i tried and it came out burnt. maybe i need a new pan? idk, but still going to try again!

  6. User avatar wellRespected says:

Caramel can be so tricky… I prefer just the apples but good recipe overall.

  7. User avatar silas.goldner77 says:

Can you use regular baking sheet without parchment? I ran out. also wooden sticks were kinda loose, i had to tape ’em. Still tasted good though.

  8. User avatar Arwen Evenstar says:

I liked the flavor, but the caramel didn’t stick well on my apples. Any tips?

  9. 2 stars
I tried this recipe but it didn’t work for me. The caramel wouldn’t stick to the apples. Maybe I did something wrong?

  10. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    2 stars
I followed it exactly and mine seized up a bit after adding vanilla. Not sure if my thermometer was off, but the flavor was still good. Anyone have tips for fixing thickened caramel?

  11. User avatar odis.russel1975 says:

    4 stars
Delish! 😍 Just a little too sweet for my taste, but still a hit at our Halloween party!

    1. 5 stars
Tried this recipe too! I didn’t find it too sweet, but maybe next time I’ll cut back on sugar. Still, they were a big hit! 🎃

  12. User avatar katina.goodwin27 says:

These turned out way better than I expected—glossy caramel and the apples stayed crisp. I used a candy thermometer and hit 240°F exactly. Perfect treat for fall!

    1. User avatar hunter.lockman1959 says:

      5 stars
240°F exactly?! That’s super precise—nice job. I always guess and mine gets either too hard or too chewy, lol.

  13. 4 stars
Good recipe! Could you use different fruits? Maybe bananas?

  14. User avatar fidelia.shanahan29 says:

    5 stars
These turned out gorgeous! The caramel reached the soft-ball stage perfectly and the flavor is super rich. I dipped a second time after the first coat set a bit—so good.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! Dipping twice is the cheat code 😂 Mine always gets too thin on the first coat—going to try your method.

    2. 4 stars
I got the temp too high once and it turned grainy, so 240°F really matters. Yours sounds spot on. Did you stir constantly near the end?

  17. 4 stars
Yum! I’ve never made caramel before, but this recipe was super easy to follow! Thanks!

I dunno, sounds kinda messy to me. Aren’t caramel apples hard to eat?

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree! Caramel and apples are the best combo! 🍏🍬

  20. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, heating sugar to 240°F sounds scary. But the instructions were clear and it worked—watching the thermometer was key. Worth it.

  21. 1 star
Caramel apples? More like stick apples. This was a fail for me.

  22. User avatar emmanuel.romaguera1982 says:

    2 stars
Meh… mine was too thick by the time I dipped, like chewing toffee. I think I cooked a few minutes too long. Flavor is okay but not the texture I wanted.

Soo sweet and sticky! My kids loved them. We had fun making them together.

    2. User avatar renaldo.ratke98 says:

      3 stars
They look good, but I tried making caramel before and it didn’t turn out right. Is there an easier way?

  25. 2 stars
I don’t understand why people make these. Too sweet! What’s wrong with just eating an apple?

    1. User avatar aaron.blick2009 says:

      2 stars
Honestly, I don’t see the point either. An apple is just fine without all that sugar. It’s like adding chocolate to salad! 🤷‍♂️

    2. User avatar toney.will62 says:

      4 stars
I get what you’re saying, but caramel apples are a classic treat! Sometimes you just gotta indulge a little. 😋

Caramel apples can’t go wrong! I’m excited to make these for Halloween!

These caramel apples are SO good! My kids loved them, and they were super easy to make. Will definitely do this again!

    1. 5 stars
I’m glad you and your kids enjoyed them! Caramel apples are such a fun treat. Did you try adding nuts or sprinkles?

  28. User avatar davida.kuphal says:

    3 stars
I found this recipe pretty complicated. Is there an easier way to make caramel?

    1. User avatar christal.wolf says:

      2 stars
Complicated? I don’t think so. Just follow the steps lol! Caramel is just sugar and butter, right?

    2. 4 stars
I get that! Making caramel can be tricky. You could try microwave caramel if you want something easier and quicker!

  29. User avatar cameron.cassin1951 says:

    5 stars
    Best caramel apples ever!!

  30. User avatar eleanora.abernathy30 says:

    3 stars
Careful with the temp, went a bit over and burnt my caramel. Lesson learned the hard way.

  31. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

    1 star
What do you mean 240 degrees? Isn’t that too hot? I thought caramel needed to be cooler!

    1. User avatar damon.reichert1962 says:

      5 stars
240 degrees is indeed the right temp for making caramel! That’s the soft-ball stage. Don’t worry, it’ll work out perfectly if you follow the recipe! 🍏

  32. User avatar marhta.schowalter1996 says:

    2 stars
I tried this and my caramel hardened way too fast while I was dipping. I think I waited too long between steps. The flavor was great, just timing is everything.

  33. 5 stars
My kids had a blast making these! Thanks for the recipe!!

  34. User avatar zora.hand93 says:

    5 stars
Made them last night and the caramel thickened perfectly. The vanilla at the end was a nice touch. Only thing: don’t rush the cooling or it’ll be messy.

  35. 3 stars
I followed the steps pretty closely, but my caramel got grainy after cooling a bit. I think my heat was too high. Still tasty though, just not as smooth.

    1. User avatar Beverly Bosco says:

      4 stars
Ugh, grainy caramel is the worst 😩 Usually that happens when the sugar starts to crystallize—either from too much heat or not stirring enough early on. Next time try cooking a bit more gently and avoid stirring once it starts bubbling (just swirl the pan).

    2. User avatar manuel.hoppe says:

      3 stars
Mine did that once… I swear I eyeballed it and the thermometer lied (lol). I think cooling too fast also helped it set before it was smooth. Did you rinse the pot or anything? Sugar can leave little crystals behind.

  36. User avatar Super Saiyan Vegeta says:

    2 stars
Caramel apples are supposed to be made with red apples, right? This recipe is wrong.

  37. 5 stars
I love caramel apples and these are legit! I let the caramel cool until it coats a spoon, and it made dipping way smoother. Plus the parchment trick saved my sanity.

  38. User avatar Christin Lind says:

    3 stars
I love caramel apples! But the ingredients seem like a lot. Why the heavy cream? Can’t I just use sugar and water? 🤔

    1. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

      5 stars
The heavy cream adds richness to the caramel! Just sugar and water won’t give you that smooth texture. Trust me, it’s worth it! 😊

  39. User avatar dot.kunde72 says:

    2 stars
Too sweet for me! I thought I could lessen the sugar, but it changed everything.

  40. User avatar christene.braun79 says:

    5 stars
These are soooo good! I made them for my kids and they loved it!

  41. User avatar Bernetta Hauck says:

    2 stars
I tried this but my caramel didn’t set right. Maybe I cooked it too long?

  42. User avatar brittney.kunze88 says:

    2 stars
I found the caramel too sticky and hard to work with. Not sure what I did wrong, but it didn’t turn out like the pictures.

  43. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    5 stars
Awesome recipe! Tasted just like the ones from the fair. I’m gonna put sprinkles on next time! 🎉

    1. User avatar fred.price says:

      5 stars
So glad you liked it! Sprinkles will make it even more fun! 🌈

    2. 3 stars
I dunno, sounds like it could be too sweet with sprinkles. Just saying.

  44. 3 stars
Honestly, they didn’t turn out as expected. The caramel was too runny, maybe I cooked it too long?

  45. User avatar cordia.rutherford71 says:

    4 stars
Such a fun recipe for fall! My kids loved dipping the apples and it made for a nice family activity. Will make again!!

  46. User avatar Shadowfax says:

    1 star
Why do people put sticks in apples? Seems a bit weird to me, no offense.

  47. User avatar tommie.hodkiewicz says:

    4 stars
Caramel apples are kinda intimidating, but this recipe feels doable. I’m giving it 4 stars because the taste is great and the caramel texture was right after cooling a bit.

    1. User avatar andreas.thompson says:

      5 stars
Same! I was nervous too, but the 240°F soft-ball stage tip makes it way less scary. Mine set perfectly after cooling a bit.

    2. User avatar Chase Parisian II says:

      3 stars
Not gonna lie, I messed it up once—burnt caramel. I think my heat was too high and I didn’t cool it enough before dipping. Still, the flavor is worth retrying.

  48. User avatar dennise.lang1982 says:

    3 stars
I don’t know about putting corn syrup; seems unhealthy. What are the alternatives?

  49. 4 stars
So easy and so good! I used Granny Smith apples for a tart flavor. Perfect combo!

  50. User avatar Gilbert Cremin says:

    5 stars
These are the best caramel apples I’ve ever made! The caramel was perfect and so easy to work with. Definitely a new favorite! 🍏✨

  51. 2 stars
I swear I followed the recipe but my caramel wouldn’t stick. Anyone else have this problem?

  52. 4 stars
Great recipe! Just a heads up, corn syrup is kinda hard to find where I’m from.

  53. User avatar candace.jast1992 says:

    2. User avatar herbert.pollich says:

      3 stars
Looks fun, but isn’t it super messy? I tried once and it was a disaster! 😂

  54. User avatar zulma.reinger7 says:

    4 stars
Delicious, but kinda messy, everyone had caramel on their faces! 😂

  55. User avatar vincent.bednar45 says:

    1 star
I don’t understand why people make these. They just get sticky and messy. Not worth it.

  56. User avatar genaro.koepp64 says:

    4 stars
Tasty, but I think my caramel was a little too thick when I dipped. Next time I’ll cool it for less time. Still, way better than store-bought.

  57. User avatar Tom Bombadil says:

    5 stars
Yummy! Just what I needed for fall. I added some nuts on top, really good!

  58. 3 stars
The caramel didn’t set for me. Maybe I cooked it too long? Not sure what went wrong…

  59. User avatar jeannette.lesch says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but mine never got to 240°F—took forever. I was stirring constantly and using medium heat like it says. By the time it finally reached something like soft-ball stage, it was already dark. Still edible though.

    1. 4 stars
That’s frustrating—sounds like the temp was lagging. Soft-ball stage can take forever if the burner runs cool or the thermometer is off. Did you keep the caramel at a steady medium the whole time? Also, stirring constantly can slow it down a bit if it’s not really reaching a rolling boil.

  60. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

    2 stars
Mine seized a bit when I added vanilla. Probably my pan was too hot? I stirred like crazy but it turned grainy. Taste was fine though.

  61. User avatar christen.beer30 says:

    5 stars
So easy and honestly hard to mess up if your caramel reaches soft-ball stage. I added a sprinkle of flaky salt and it made it restaurant-y. Will make again for sure.

  62. User avatar andreas.schroeder says:

    5 stars
These turned out way better than I expected! The caramel hit that thick-coating stage right around the time my thermometer said 240°F. Dipping was a little messy but so fun. 10/10 for a party snack.

    1. 5 stars
That’s awesome! The 240°F soft-ball stage timing is everything—so glad it matched your thermometer. My caramel always gets dramatic right there too 😄

  63. User avatar tyson.huels says:

    3 stars
do u need a thermometer? I just eyeballed it. lol

  64. User avatar patrick.lind says:

    1. User avatar Ford Prefect says:

  65. User avatar demarcus.monahan53 says:

    5 stars
Tried these last weekend and they came out BEAUTIFUL. The 240°F soft-ball stage is the key—mine almost went too far but I caught it in time. Super creamy caramel, and the vanilla makes it smell like a fair.

  66. User avatar kimiko.sauer says:

    2 stars
I tried making this and it was a disaster! The caramel just wouldn’t set right. What did I do wrong?

  67. User avatar bernice.beier34 says:

    5 stars
Perfect for fall! Just like my childhood. 🍏🍬

  68. 5 stars
My kid asked for these again immediately. The vanilla step made it smell like a bakery. Also, parchment saved me from a mess.

  69. 5 stars
Mmm, so yummy! I added nuts on top and it’s the best snack ever!

  73. User avatar joe_banana says:

Wow, making caramel is harder than it looks! Mine turned out grainy. 😩

    1. User avatar dominic.kautzer14 says:

      3 stars
Grainy? That sucks! Did you stir it too much while it was cooking? I’ve heard that can mess it up.

    2. User avatar basementDweller says:

      4 stars
I feel you! Caramel can be so tricky. Maybe try using a different thermometer? 🤔

  74. User avatar alfredia.mcglynn says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe, but my caramel didn’t thicken. I think I messed up the temp. Maybe add a tip for beginners?

  75. User avatar lupe.jakubowski says:

    4 stars
I used honey instead of sugar. Still delicious, but not really the same thing. 🤔

    1. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

      2 stars
Not sure honey gives the same taste. Caramel’s s’posed to be sweet, y’know?

    2. User avatar mitzi.hills22 says:

      3 stars
      Honey? That’s a risky swap! But I guess it’s kinda healthy? 🤷‍♀️

  76. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    3 stars
I like the simplicity, but I wish the instructions said what to do if you don’t have a candy thermometer. I ended up guessing and the caramel was a little too thick, but still tasted good.

  77. User avatar maryalice.leuschke says:

Caramel apples? More like sugar bombs. My teeth hurt just thinking about them.

Amazing?! Really? My caramel always ends up too hard. 😩

  80. User avatar Wellington Yueh says:

    5 stars
These were soooo good! I made them for a party and everyone loved them.

  81. User avatar tiesha.prosacco says:

    3 stars
Mine seized up slightly when I whisked in the vanilla—maybe my pan was too hot? Still tasted amazing, but the texture got a bit bumpy. Watch that temperature, folks.

  82. User avatar ettie.lakin84 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about using heavy cream—seems like it could split if the heat isn’t controlled. But your stirring advice helps, so I might try it with lower heat.

    1. User avatar Mrs. Britt Mraz says:

      5 stars
Totally get the skepticism—caramel can get weird if it overheats. But since you’re hitting 240°F and stirring, it should stay smooth. I always keep it at a steady medium (not high) and it behaves way better.

  83. User avatar darcy.mosciski60 says:

    4 stars
The corn syrup amount feels oddly specific (1/4 cup), but it works. Caramel stays smooth and glossy. My only complaint is I had a lot more caramel than I needed, but that’s not really a complaint.

    1. User avatar Zaphod Beeblebrox says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—1/4 cup corn syrup is super specific, but it’s probably the magic for that smooth glossy finish. The soft-ball stage helps a lot too.

  84. User avatar Humma Kavula says:

    2 stars
I burned the caramel. Is there a trick to keep it from burning? Didn’t turn out well.

    1. 4 stars
Burned caramel is a bummer! To avoid that, try cooking it on lower heat and keep stirring. It helps a lot!

  85. User avatar fermina.grant says:

    5 stars
These were a huge hit with my kids. They helped dip and it was messy in the fun way. Also, drying the apples thoroughly mattered a lot—no slipping caramel.

    1. 2 stars
I tried this but my caramel never got to 240°F. Maybe my thermometer is off? Ended up too runny so the dipping part was sad. Still tasted good though.

    2. User avatar tommie.cartwright says:

      5 stars
Yes!! We did the same thing with my little ones—so messy, but like the best kind of chaos 😄 Great call on drying the apples. I skipped it once and the caramel slid right off.

Soo easy! I used Granny Smith apples for a tart twist. Yum!

I used different fruits instead of apples! It works, too! Banana caramel was awesome.

The instructions are pretty clear, but I wish it said how long to cook exactly besides 240°F. I overcooked once and it turned hard fast.

Yeah I get that—240°F is helpful, but the “how long” would really save people. Soft-ball can jump fast depending on the stove and pan.

Followed your steps but burned the caramel! Sad.

Burned? That’s just part of cooking sometimes! Don’t give up, practice makes perfect! 🌟

    2. 4 stars
I’m sorry to hear that! Caramel can be tricky. Maybe try using a lower heat next time?

Corn syrup always feels a little weird to me, not gonna lie. Like why not just sugar? But I guess it helps prevent crystallization… still, would try once.

I was a little nervous about the 240°F, but the candy thermometer saved me. Smooth caramel, not grainy. Next time I’ll maybe add a pinch of salt to make it pop.

    1. 5 stars
240°F sounds scary until you trust the thermometer 😅 Glad yours turned out smooth—mine always wants to go grainy if I’m not careful. Love the idea of adding a pinch of salt!

I tried caramel apples once and it was gritty… I think my thermometer was lying. You’re probably right about the salt though—salt makes sweet taste less flat. Also, do you mix the caramel constantly or just stir sometimes?

  92. User avatar serina.yost13 says:

So fun! Caramel apples are like fail-proof if you got parchment and patience, lol.

  93. User avatar vina.waters85 says:

Okay but why is there no note about stirring constantly? Mine almost boiled over 😅. I’ll try again with more careful attention.

I tried this last weekend and my caramel seized a little when I added vanilla—maybe my pan was too hot. It still came together after stirring though. Apples are crunchy and sweet, so overall, good call.

    1. 4 stars
Wait, 240°F is pretty high, no wonder it can seize fast. I think my corn syrup always works better if I do it low heat, like barely simmering. Apples being crunchy is the best part—won’t argue there.

    2. User avatar Gene Kertzmann DVM says:

      5 stars
Oof, caramel seizing when adding vanilla sounds exactly like it got a bit too hot or grabbed moisture. I usually add vanilla off-heat—nice save though! Glad it still set up.

These turned out amazing—glossy caramel, perfect snap! I used a candy thermometer and stayed patient on the soft-ball stage. 10/10 for parties.

Not bad, but next time I will add nuts to the caramel. Sounds crunchier!

These are too sweet!! Maybe less sugar or try with tart apples?

    1. User avatar Adelaide Maggio says:

I totally agree! I tried making these and they were way too sweet for my taste. Tart apples would be much better! 🍏

These turned out so glossy and not too sweet—my kids actually kept asking for “the caramel coating.” The 240°F soft-ball stage tip saved me from undercooking!

How can the caramel be so thick? My didn’t set properly, and I’m not sure why. Help!

Caramel apples always feel kinda fancy for something so simple. The steps are clear and the ingredient list is reasonable. I’ll definitely make again around Halloween.

Caramel apples are cute but this recipe is kinda intense. 1 cup cream and all that sugar feels like overkill and the mess is real. Also, parchment stuck to mine a little.

    1. User avatar Su Shenlong says:

      4 stars
Totally agree—1 cup cream + a full cup of sugar is a lot. Mine tasted amazing but the cleanup was ridiculous 😅 Also yeah, parchment got stuck on one side for me too.

    2. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      5 stars
I don’t think it’s overkill. Soft-ball stage at 240°F is the key—follow the temp and it won’t be so messy. For parchment, try spraying it lightly with oil or using a silicone mat.

  105. User avatar talitha.dooley1966 says:

Pretty good, but my caramel seized a bit when I stirred in the vanilla too fast. Next time I’ll wait a minute longer before adding it. Still tasted amazing though.

    1. User avatar graciela.greenholt82 says:

      5 stars
Oh nooo—yeah caramel can get cranky if the vanilla goes in too fast. Waiting a minute longer is a great fix. Glad it still tasted amazing though!

  106. 3 stars
Not gonna lie, I don’t have a candy thermometer, so I guessed. It came out a little too thick and took forever to set. Still delicious though—just messy.

    1. User avatar gail.okon says:

      2 stars
Dang, sorry it got messy. But if you don’t have a thermometer, just cook it longer till it turns dark amber? Also I think 240F might be too high if it’s thick—maybe try 220F? Still looks good though!

    2. User avatar billie.schamberger84 says:

      4 stars
Ahh that sounds like thermometer trouble 😅 Caramel usually thickens way faster once it hits temp. Next time, do you have a water test you can try? Like soft ball stage—should form a soft ball in cold water.

  107. 2 stars
The caramel set super quickly on the tray. I think my apples were too dry?? Also I didn’t have a thermometer and used “feel,” which was a mistake 😅

  108. 1 star
Too much sugar, I didn’t like it. Why do people want to eat this stuff anyway? 🤷‍♂️

The recipe doesn’t say how quickly to work after dipping… my caramel started setting mid-batch and I had a mess. Otherwise flavor is great.
