The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a recall for 143,416 pounds of deli meat from Gaiser’s European Style Provisions Inc. The recall is due to mislabeling, as some ready-to-eat bologna products may contain pork, beef, or chicken that is not properly listed on the labels.
How to Identify the Recalled Products
The issue was discovered after a consumer complaint was filed through the Office of Inspector General’s hotline. The labels on certain bologna products do not accurately disclose that they contain pork, and in some cases, beef or chicken.
The recalled Deli Meat was distributed under various brand names and sold at retail and wholesale locations between March 20 and June 20. Check your packaging for the following product names:
- Family Tree Bologna Veal
- Babushka’s Recipe Chicken Bologna
- Fancy Bologna
- Gaiser’s Russian Brand Doktorskaya Bologna
- Gaiser’s Bologna Veal
- Gaiser’s Turkey Bologna
- Chicken Bologna Kypoyka Paba
All affected products display the establishment number “5385” inside the USDA inspection mark. Some products may have been sold pre-packaged, while others could have been sliced, weighed, and wrapped at store deli counters without clear labeling. Label images are also available on the USDA website to help consumers identify the affected items.
What to Do if You Purchased the Bologna
No reports of illness or adverse reactions have been linked to the recalled bologna. FSIS has categorized this as a Class III recall, meaning the likelihood of health risks is low.
Still, consumers who purchased any of the affected products—or any unlabeled bologna from deli counters during the affected time frame—should not eat it. Instead, dispose of the product or return it to the store where it was purchased.
