Bourgeois Smokehouse has recalled approximately one hundred pounds of ready-to-eat smoked andouille sausage due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
The affected sausage was produced on May 12 and began appearing in stores on May 13. It was sold at Rouses Market butcher counters across Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
How to Identify the Recalled Product
Since the sausage was sold individually and packaged at the butcher counter, it does not carry the USDA mark of inspection that typically helps identify recalled items. If you purchased smoked andouille sausage at a Rouses Market in any of the affected states, the FSIS advises not to consume it. Instead, contact your store to confirm whether your purchase came from Bourgeois Smokehouse. If it did, you’re entitled to a refund or replacement.
Discovery and Health Concerns
The contamination was discovered through routine testing conducted by FSIS, which revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in product samples. No illnesses linked to the sausage have been reported so far.
Understanding Listeria
Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacterium that can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, individuals with weakened immune systems, and pregnant individuals and their newborns. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures. In more severe cases, the infection can spread beyond the gut, potentially leading to miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or life-threatening complications for newborns.
If you have consumed this product and are experiencing any symptoms, contact your healthcare provider promptly.
