Tres Leches

August 5, 2024

Tres Leches is a dessert that feels like a celebration in every bite. Soft, moist, and decadently creamy, this Latin American classic is beloved for its unique texture and unforgettable flavor. Its name means “three milks,” referring to the combination of sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and whole milk or cream that gives this cake its signature richness.

The base of Tres Leches is a light sponge cake, which may seem ordinary at first. But once it’s soaked in the milk mixture, it transforms into something truly special. The cake absorbs the liquid without becoming soggy, creating a texture that is fluffy yet moist, sweet yet balanced. Each bite melts in your mouth, making it nearly impossible to stop at one slice.

Tres Leches is a dessert with roots across many Latin American countries, from Mexico and Nicaragua to Colombia and beyond. While each region might put its own spin on the recipe, the essence remains the same, a delicate cake bathed in sweet milk and topped with a layer of whipped cream. Sometimes it’s finished with a sprinkle of cinnamon, fresh berries, or a drizzle of caramel for an extra touch of flair.

What makes this cake especially appealing is how refreshing it tastes. Despite being rich and creamy, Tres Leches never feels heavy. The chilled milk-soaked sponge is light and cool, making it an ideal dessert for warmer weather or festive occasions. It’s the kind of treat that brings people together, perfect for birthdays, holidays, or just because.

Tres Leches can also be made in advance and stored in the fridge, which makes it great for entertaining. In fact, it often tastes better after sitting overnight as the flavors continue to meld. It’s beautiful served in slices from a baking dish or as individual mini cakes for a fun twist.

Tres Leches is a traditional Latin American dessert cake. It’s a sponge cake soaked in three types of milk: evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream.
Servings 8 people
Prep Time 30 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 1 minute

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour sifted
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 5 units eggs separated, large
  • 1 cup granulated sugar divided
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 12 ounces evaporated milk
  • 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the egg yolks with 3/4 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in the milk and vanilla.
  • Gently fold the flour mixture into the egg yolk mixture until well combined.
  • In a separate large bowl, use clean beaters to beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. Gradually add the remaining 1/4 cup sugar and continue beating until stiff peaks form.
  • Gently fold the egg whites into the batter, in three additions, until just combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
  • Allow the cake to cool completely in the baking dish.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and heavy cream.
  • Once the cake has cooled, pierce the surface with a fork all over. Pour the milk mixture evenly over the cake. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  • Serve chilled, topped with whipped cream or fruits if desired.

It’s okay. Nothing special if you ask me. My aunt makes it way better, not using a recipe.

    1. 2 stars
Not really sold on this. My cousin’s version is way moister without so much milk. Seems like a mess if you ask me.

    2. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

I don’t know what you’re talking about, this cake is amazing! My grandma taught me this recipe and it always tastes great. Maybe your aunt is just trying too hard.

  2. User avatar selina.jones42 says:

    2 stars
Idk, my cake didn’t soak up the milk properly. What did I do wrong? It’s kinda dry 🤔

  3. User avatar leticia.beier says:

    4 stars
First time making this and it turned out great! Easy to follow instructions.

  4. 3 stars
I tried it once and the middle was a little gummy after soaking. I think I underbaked. If you do this, please don’t skip the ‘toothpick clean’ step.

  5. User avatar margurite.robel1985 says:

    5 stars
Tres leches is my favorite. I used coconut milk instead of cream to make it lighter. Turned out delicious! 😋

  6. 2 stars
Too many steps. I just wanted a simple cake. This ain’t it. Going back to box mixes.

  7. User avatar doreen.little11 says:

    3 stars
I tried it once and the cake soaked but stayed a bit dry in the middle. I might’ve underbaked or didn’t pierce enough. Still, I’ll retry because the flavor is amazing.

    1. 4 stars
Wait—did you pierce *before* the milk mix? I usually poke it a ton, like almost all the way down, otherwise the center won’t take it. Also let it cool fully; warm cake can get weird.

    2. User avatar euna.goldner92 says:

      5 stars
That sounds like you were super close! Since it stayed dry in the middle, I’d bet on underbaking or not enough soaking through. The toothpick “clean” test can fool you—try adding 2–5 minutes next time and pierce pretty aggressively (but evenly) after it cools.

  8. User avatar juan.farrell says:

This was sooo good! I never tried tres leches before and I’m addicted now!

  9. User avatar enoch.simonis55 says:

Tres leches is my favorite! This one turned out kinda dry though. What did I do wrong?

  10. 5 stars
Just two words: Divine. Delicious. 🥳

  11. User avatar alysha.pouros47 says:

    2 stars
I dunno. I thought it would be easier. My cake was a flop! 😕

  12. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    3 stars
Hmmm, I thought this cake would be more soggy? I don’t know. It’s okay, but not what I expected.

  13. 5 stars
Looks like the kind of dessert that fixes a bad day. Chilling overnight is non-negotiable. Amazing!

  14. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    3 stars
This is good, but it’s very sweet. Next time I’ll use a little less condensed milk or add more vanilla to balance it.

  15. User avatar janiece.mertz30 says:

    4 stars
I’m not a baker, but this recipe was clear. My cake collapsed a bit though… maybe my eggs were too small.

  16. User avatar Barry Manilow says:

This tres leches cake is to die for! So moist and delicious, my family couldn’t get enough. Def 5 stars!

  17. User avatar raymon.wilkinson83 says:

Tres leches is my fav! But why do people use so many eggs? Seems too much.

    1. User avatar Falmer Gloomlurker says:

      5 stars
I think the eggs help make the cake really fluffy and moist! It’s a traditional recipe too. 😋

    2. User avatar evelyne.russel3 says:

      2 stars
Yeah, but 5 eggs? Seems like overkill to me. Can’t you make it with less and still have it taste good?

  18. User avatar arlinda.howe says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, my egg whites collapsed a bit, so the batter got a little dense. Still tasted good, but I think I didn’t fold carefully enough. Next time I’ll be gentler.

  19. User avatar monte.nikolaus says:

    5 stars
Baked this for a party and everyone loved it! They didn’t believe I made it myself.

    1. 5 stars
That’s amazing! Tres Leches is always a hit! 🎉 I’m glad they loved it!

  20. User avatar tabatha.fadel24 says:

    3 stars
Not sure what ‘tres leches’ means but this cake was good! My grandma used to make it too. Easy to make. 3!

  21. User avatar shantelle.kassulke65 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why people love this cake so much. It’s way too soggy for me. Not for me, 2 stars.

    1. User avatar adolph.rowe says:

      4 stars
I totally get you! Tres leches can be too wet for some. I like a firmer cake myself, but many love the moistness! 🤷‍♂️

    2. 3 stars
I think you’re missing out! It’s supposed to be soggy; that’s how it’s made! Tres leches means ‘three milks’ for a reason. 😅

  22. User avatar nina.bergnaum says:

    5 stars
Love this recipe! It’s super moist and delicious. I added some strawberries on top and it was perfect!

  23. User avatar starla.larson2015 says:

    4 stars
This is insanely rich. Like, good rich, but I definitely felt it after two bites. I reduced the sweetened condensed milk just a bit and it helped without ruining the flavor.

  24. User avatar vannesa.kub8 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about using ‘5 units eggs’… like how many is that actually? But I guessed 5 large eggs and it worked. Flavor is great, though it took longer to bake than 30 min for me.

  25. User avatar january.willms56 says:

    2 stars
Hmm, I don’t get it. Why is it called ‘three milks’? Are there actually three different milks in it? Confusing…

    1. User avatar Frost Atronach says:

      5 stars
It’s called ‘three milks’ because it uses three types of milk: evaporated, condensed, and heavy cream. It makes the cake super moist! Don’t worry, it’s not that confusing once you know it! 😊

  26. 5 stars
Made this for a family get-together and it vanished fast. The cake is super tender and the milk soak is exactly what you want. I did add a little cinnamon to the whipped cream topping—10/10.

    1. User avatar rocky.schuster says:

      5 stars
Yesss—vanishing fast is the best compliment 😄 I love that you added cinnamon to the whipped cream!

  27. 4 stars
I was skeptical about separating 5 eggs (why so many?), but it came out fluffy and the soaking was perfect. Next time I’ll add a little cinnamon on top because it tastes “missing something” without it.

    1. User avatar donnie.stokes says:

      5 stars
Omg yes—5 eggs always sounds excessive until you taste it. The fluffy texture makes sense. Cinnamon on top sounds like a great fix too!

  28. User avatar beatrice.murray says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but my eggs didn’t get as fluffy as expected. Still turned out good, just a bit denser. Next time I’ll beat the yolks longer.

    1. 3 stars
Hmmm that’s weird. I always get fluffy with the yolks—maybe your oven runs hot or you overbaked it a couple minutes? 25-30 is kinda wide. Next time check at 22-24?

    2. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      4 stars
Mine did that once too—turned out tasty, just not that airy. I think it’s usually folding too aggressively or the whites not fully at stiff peaks. Beating the yolks longer sounds right though!

  29. User avatar gabriele.kulas93 says:

    4 stars
1 cup flour seems like a lot for this size. Also 12 ounces evaporated + 14 ounces condensed… that’s a lot of dairy soup. But I guess that’s the point. I’d make it again for sure.

  30. 5 stars
Tres leches is my favorite dessert! I made this for a family reunion and everyone loved it!

  31. User avatar Draugr Death Overlord says:

    5 stars
Tres leches is my weakness 😅. This recipe nails the balance—sweet but not cloying. I let it sit overnight and the texture was perfect.

  32. User avatar Future Trunks says:

    4 stars
Okay, I didn’t use vanilla cause I ran out, but still tastes good! Who needs vanilla?

  33. User avatar lien.strosin1995 says:

This tres leches cake is amazing! So moist and sweet, just loved it!

    1. User avatar kevin.okuneva37 says:

      2 stars
I dunno… do you think it’s really that good? I mean, it’s just a wet cake, right?

    2. User avatar alec.runolfsson says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! I made it last week and everyone loved it too! So much flavor!

  34. User avatar leigh.nitzsche46 says:

    5 stars
Beat the eggs right, that’s the secret! My mom always says so. 🌟

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! Beating the eggs properly makes such a difference. My cakes always fluff up when I do it right! 🍰

    2. User avatar kelley.gerlach26 says:

      3 stars
Really? I thought the secret was not to overmix? 🤔 Either way, this recipe looks yum! Gonna try it.

  35. User avatar rex.brekke says:

    1 star
This recipe is wrong. You shouldn’t add THAT much sweet stuff. It’s too sweet for me.

  36. User avatar alfonso.nikolaus59 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is amazing! I made it for my family and they loved it! Totally a 5-star! 🌟

  37. User avatar Super Saiyan Gohan says:

    2 stars
Isn’t tres leches supposed to be simpler? I feel like it’s a lot of steps for just some cake!

    1. User avatar racquel.kunde2017 says:

      4 stars
I thought it was supposed to be easier too! But the end result is totally worth it. Just a little patience! 🍰

  38. 4 stars
Tres leches is my fave! Used coconut milk instead of condensed milk and it was still yummm. 4 stars!

  39. User avatar barb.hettinger1994 says:

    3 stars
I tried making this but it turned out super dry… followed the recipe but I guess my oven is weird. Anyone got tips?

  40. User avatar ricardo.schoen79 says:

    5 stars
This is my go-to tres leches now. The ratio of milks is spot on—super creamy without being too sweet. I top with strawberries and it’s chef’s kiss.

  41. User avatar bud.harber says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about how much liquid goes in, but it really works. I was worried it’d be soggy—turns out chilling helps a ton. Great dessert for make-ahead parties.

  42. User avatar brian.pagac17 says:

    4 stars
Good but my cake kinda sank in the middle.

  43. 3 stars
Baking 25-30 mins at 350F feels short? I pulled mine early and it was slightly underdone in the center. After a few more minutes, much better.

  44. User avatar filomena.heathcote95 says:

    4 stars
Four hours wasn’t enough for me—had to do overnight. Also I don’t have a 9×13, so I used a different pan and it was thicker. Just adjust bake time, I guess.

  45. User avatar willis.damore9 says:

    5 stars
Made this for my family and it vanished fast. The milk soak is exactly where the magic happens—so tender and sweet without being too crazy. Followed the cooling + chilling times and it came out perfect.

  46. User avatar latina.hand11 says:

    2 stars
I don’t understand why so many steps. Can I just mix it all and bake? Seems like too much work for a cake.

  47. 5 stars
This is the best tres leches cake I ever had! Can’t believe I made it myself!

  48. User avatar derek.macgyver66 says:

    5 stars
Yum! I added some strawberries on top, makes it more pretty! 💖

  49. User avatar hyman.barton1981 says:

    1 star
I followed the recpie but it dind’t turn out right. Maybe I used the wrong kind of milk? Idk.

    1. User avatar Falmer Shadowmaster says:

      4 stars
I think the type of milk really matters! Whole milk is best for this. Try it again with the right milk next time!

    2. 3 stars
Maybe it was the eggs, too? They gotta be fresh! When I made it, I used two kinds of milk and it was perfect.

  50. User avatar jared.daniel says:

    3 stars
This is too complicated for me. Can someone just tell me how to make it simpler? Like, do I need all these milks?

  51. User avatar Wellington Yueh says:

    3 stars
Lol I tried to “gently fold” and I think I overmixed. Batter deflated. It still tasted like tres leches, just not as airy as I expected. Anyone got folding tips?

  52. User avatar rachel.lind2018 says:

    5 stars
So easy to make! My family gobbled it up in one sitting. Definitely a keeper!

  53. 2 stars
I don’t know what went wrong, but mine turned out super soggy. Not a fan of this one.

  54. User avatar roselle.waelchi56 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about the 9×13 size at first, but the proportions worked. My cake was a little browned on top (probably my oven runs hot), yet the center still stayed fluffy after soaking.

  55. 4 stars
I’m not a huge baking person, but the egg whites part is honestly where it got me. Mine didn’t go super stiff, yet it still tasted great.

  56. 5 stars
So rich it’s almost ridiculous. My whipped cream topping basically disappeared because everyone kept taking bites. 10/10 indulgence.

  57. User avatar earnestine.nienow says:

    4 stars
The smell while it bakes is unreal. I love how easy it is, and the fork-piercing step actually matters. My family asked for the recipe.

  58. 3 stars
I thought it was too sweet! Maybe less condensed milk next time?

  59. User avatar Darell Kemmer says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I think 25 minutes was a little long for my oven. Also, I used a thinner pouring motion so some areas got more soaked than others. Still tasty though.

  60. User avatar stanley.hill says:

    2 stars
Honestly, I think this is overrated. It tastes like soaked cake in sweet dairy. Still—my kids ate it so…

  61. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    3 stars
The ingredients look right, but the instructions are kinda all over the place with that

tag at the end. Minor thing, but it threw me off mid-read.

  62. 4 stars
    Yummy 😋

  63. User avatar joseph.miller72 says:

    4 stars
Five eggs? I thought it was gonna be like 3 eggs lol. But it came out great. My kids said it tastes like ‘milk cake heaven.’

    1. User avatar misti.nikolaus1998 says:

      5 stars
Haha same! I also assumed fewer eggs, but 5 really gives it that rich, fluffy texture. So glad your kids loved it—“milk cake heaven” is spot on 😄

  64. User avatar logan.macgyver69 says:

    5 stars
Made this for a party and it disappeared fast. The texture is so tender and the milk soak is perfection. Only change: I let it chill overnight and it was even better.

    1. 5 stars
Yesss! “disappeared fast” is the best kind of review 😄 I tried the overnight chill too and it really does turn it more luscious. Perfect call.

    2. 3 stars
I’m not sure about soaking it “overnight” because I always worry it’ll get soggy, but your party results make me wanna risk it. Did you chill it covered or uncovered?

  65. User avatar lizbeth.nitzsche says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, mine came out kinda rubbery. I think I overmixed after folding the whites. Still tasted good with all the milks, just not as light as I wanted.

    1. User avatar maximo.hoeger1957 says:

      4 stars
Ugh, I’m sorry 😕 but yeah—once you fold the whites too much, you definitely lose that airy lift. Next time try fewer folds and stop as soon as the batter looks uniform. Also make sure the whites are actually stiff and not sitting around waiting.

    2. User avatar kitty.hodkiewicz2022 says:

      5 stars
Rubbery usually means it baked a bit too long or the batter got overworked after the whites. Did you check it around 25 min? My toothpick test can be a liar—sometimes I pull it when it’s just set in the middle. Still, if it tasted good, you’re close!

  66. User avatar tobias.mayert96 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, 25–30 minutes might be tight for my oven. I checked early and then baked a few more minutes until the toothpick came out clean. Otherwise it was awesome.

    1. User avatar golda.rosenbaum78 says:

      3 stars
25–30 min feels too short to me… I’d prob bake longer like 40 min so it doesn’t sink. But if toothpick was clean then I guess it worked. Next time I’m trying it your way.

    2. User avatar shirley.armstrong45 says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—ovens run hot/cold. I usually start checking around 22 minutes and then go in 2–3 minute bursts. Glad it still came out awesome! 😄

  67. 5 stars
Made this for family night and it was a total hit. The cake is fluffy and the milk soak is perfect—don’t rush the chilling step!

  68. 5 stars
Made this for a family gathering and it disappeared fast. The texture is super moist—exactly what I want from tres leches. Followed the instructions on cooling + chilling and it paid off.

  69. User avatar russ.denesik52 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but 4 hours didn’t seem like enough for me. After overnight it was way better—more uniform soak. Also, I used vanilla “to taste” and mine was stronger than the original.

    1. User avatar lorenzo.ward says:

      5 stars
Totally agree about the soak time! Overnight really does make it more even—mine was a little “dry” at 4 hours too.

  70. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    2 stars
So good but I messed up the egg separation (yolks everywhere lol). It still tasted okay, but the rise was kinda sad. Guess I’ll do better next time—2 words: try again.

    1. 5 stars
Lol yolks everywhere is so real 😅 But “sad rise” makes sense if the whites weren’t properly whipped/folded. Try again—watch for stiff peaks and gentle folding!
