Tomato Soup

August 15, 2024

There’s something timeless about a warm bowl of tomato soup. It’s one of those dishes that instantly brings a sense of comfort and nostalgia, reminding us of cozy afternoons or family dinners. Simple yet satisfying, tomato soup has a way of warming you up from the inside out, making it the perfect meal for chilly days or when you just need a little pick-me-up.

The beauty of tomato soup lies in its simplicity. With just a few basic ingredients, ripe tomatoes, garlic, onions, and a little bit of seasoning, you can create a velvety, rich soup that’s bursting with flavor. The natural sweetness of the tomatoes pairs beautifully with the savory depth of garlic and onion, while a touch of cream or milk adds a comforting creaminess that elevates the entire dish.

What makes tomato soup so great is how versatile it is. You can enjoy it as a light lunch on its own, or pair it with a grilled cheese sandwich for the ultimate comfort food duo. Add a sprinkle of fresh basil or a drizzle of olive oil for a burst of freshness, or make it heartier by tossing in some croutons or roasted vegetables.

Tomato soup is also incredibly easy to make. Whether you’re using fresh or canned tomatoes, the process is straightforward. Sauté the onions and garlic, blend in the tomatoes, season to taste, and let everything simmer until the flavors meld together. For a smoother consistency, you can blend the soup until it’s silky and smooth, or leave it a bit chunky if you prefer more texture.

This dish is not just about nostalgia, it’s also a great way to enjoy the health benefits of tomatoes, which are packed with vitamins and antioxidants. Tomato soup can be easily adapted to suit different dietary preferences, whether you want it dairy-free, gluten-free, or with extra herbs and spices to suit your taste.

Tomato soup is truly a classic that never goes out of style. Whether you’re looking to nourish your body or simply enjoy something warm and comforting, a bowl of homemade tomato soup is always the answer.

Made this last night—so cozy. I used fresh basil and a little extra pepper. The blending step is key; super smooth.

  2. User avatar irvin.homenick2009 says:

    4 stars
This was good, but my soup turned out a bit too acidic even with the sugar. Next time I’ll use less broth or add a pinch more sugar gradually.

  3. 2 stars
I tried blending in batches and one batch splashed everywhere… tomato soup stains are no joke lol. Flavor still good though.

  4. User avatar chan.graham says:

    3 stars
It was ok, but I thought there was too much garlic. I prefer a more mild flavor.

    1. 4 stars
I totally get what you mean! Garlic can be overpowering sometimes. Maybe try using just one clove next time?

  5. User avatar enda.mcclure says:

    4 stars
My immersion blender splashed everywhere lol. Tasted good after, but next time I’ll blend in batches like the instructions say.

  6. User avatar luana.konopelski32 says:

    3 stars
The instructions are clear but “to taste” salt/pepper is always a little annoying lol. I over-seasoned at first, then fixed it with more broth. Still a solid soup.

  7. User avatar chester.wyman says:

    3 stars
Heavy cream optional is true—i tried it without and it was kinda acidic? The sugar fixed it, but next time I’ll add cream for sure.

    1. User avatar basementDweller says:

      4 stars
Hmm I tried this once and it was also kinda acidic… but I didn’t add enough sugar, I think. Next time I’ll try the cream like you said. Does the basil help too or not really?

    2. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

      5 stars
Yes! Tomato can be so sharp if you don’t mellow it out—cream or even a pinch of sugar makes a huge difference. Glad you figured out what was going on!

  8. User avatar royal.conroy91 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I found it a little bland until I added more black pepper. Also I didn’t have fresh basil so I used dried—still decent.

  9. User avatar mckenzie.schroeder4 says:

    2 stars
Too creamy for my taste. 😬 I prefer more of a broth type of soup.

    1. 5 stars
I totally get what you mean! Maybe you could try reducing the cream or leaving it out altogether. A lighter broth sounds good!

  10. 2 stars
Tomato soup is Tomato soup… lol. Didn’t love the texture even after blending, felt a little thick. Maybe my blender was too weak.

  11. 4 stars
The amount of garlic feels right, but I think 1/2 cup cream is too much for me. Next time I’ll use less or add a splash at the very end so it doesn’t get too heavy.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—1/2 cup cream can make it feel super heavy. I usually start with about 1/4 cup and add more only if it needs it. That “splash at the end” trick is perfect!

  12. 2 stars
Way too bland for my taste. I kept seasoning but it never got that restaurant flavor. Maybe I should’ve simmered longer or used roasted tomatoes?

  13. 5 stars
Easy peasy. My kids actually ate it! Shocked, haha!

  14. User avatar brendon.lesch says:

    4 stars
The instructions were a bit confusing first time, I mixed up the broth and tomatoes…oops! Still tasty tho!

  15. User avatar daphne.kerluke19 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good for a quick tomato soup. I used regular broth and didn’t bother with heavy cream (still tasty). Next time I’ll blend a little longer to get it extra smooth.

  16. User avatar xavier.leffler47 says:

    2 stars
I tried it but it turned out kinda bland. Maybe I didn’t use enough salt? Not sure if I’ll make it again.

    1. User avatar Gandalf the Grey says:

      4 stars
Maybe you just need to add more seasoning next time! A pinch of cayenne pepper could spice it up too. 😄

    2. 3 stars
I’m sorry it didn’t work out for you. Sometimes tomatoes can be super bland too if they aren’t in season. Try some fires roasted ones next time.

  17. 3 stars
Not sure about adding sugar at all. Tomatoes are already sweet enough to me. I left it out and it still balanced with salt/pepper.

  18. User avatar arianne.harber66 says:

    5 stars
I love this recipe! It’s the perfect way to use up tomatoes. Plus it’s really healthy.

  19. User avatar jennefer.kiehn1974 says:

    4 stars
I followed the steps exactly except I skipped the heavy cream. Still tasted great, but I’ll try cream next time for that classic creamy vibe.

  20. User avatar Wellington Yueh says:

    4 stars
The texture came out smooth, but I think 20 minutes simmer isn’t enough for super sweet tomato flavor. Next time I’ll simmer a bit longer.

  21. User avatar keven.schaefer says:

    5 stars
Delicious! Like, I ate it straight out of the pot. Definitely add the fresh basil—dried would not be the same.

    1. User avatar elsa.maggio99 says:

      4 stars
I’ve been using dried basil for years and it’s still good, but I’ll try fresh next time. Does it need to go in right after blending or can it simmer too?

    2. User avatar chung.emmerich2 says:

      5 stars
Yes! Fresh basil at the end makes such a difference. I also do the “straight from the pot” thing… no shame 😄

  22. User avatar kandy.friesen97 says:

    2 stars
Tomatoes are not good for soup. They make it taste weird. I prefer chicken soup. 😕

  23. User avatar towanda.hagenes12 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe but my soup turned out too watery. What did I do wrong? 🙁

  24. User avatar annabell.fisher2024 says:

    4 stars
I followed it mostly, but my blender splashed everywhere when I tried batches—pro tip: vent the lid. Still delicious though.

  25. User avatar shonna.tillman26 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about the sugar step, but it actually balanced the tomatoes like it says. I might reduce the sugar to 1/2 tsp though.

  26. User avatar Mila and her father says:

Made this tonight—super comforting. The immersion blending made it perfectly smooth, and the basil at the end really pops. I added a pinch more pepper than it said. 10/10.

    1. User avatar bryon.dickinson says:

      5 stars
Yes! The immersion blending is the key—mine always turns out silky when I blend it well. Basil at the end is such a nice touch. 👏

    2. 3 stars
I dunno… I tried this and it was pretty good but mine tasted kinda flat, like it needed more salt. Also, I simmered closer to 10 min and it still seemed thick? Maybe I did something wrong 😅

  27. 5 stars
Made this tonight and it was super comforting. The immersion blender made it perfectly smooth, and the fresh basil at the end really pops. I skipped the cream but it still tasted rich enough for me.

    1. User avatar freeda.altenwerth says:

      5 stars
Yes! Same here—immersion blender + fresh basil at the end is the magic combo. Glad it still worked great without the cream.

    2. User avatar zola.jones51 says:

      3 stars
I tried it but mine turned out kinda acidic, even with the sugar. Maybe my tomatoes were too tart. Still tasted good tho, just not super “rich.”

  28. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    2 stars
I guess it’s okay but 4 cups tomatoes + 2 cups broth seems too much liquid. Mine was more like tomato water (lol).

  29. 1 star
Not for me. My mom’s tomato soup is the best and this one just can’t compare. Sorry!

  30. User avatar Dan Streetmentioner says:

    4 stars
The texture is perfect—smooth without being too thick. I did add the heavy cream and it turned out creamy like a proper tomato soup should be.

  31. User avatar herman.johns says:

    4 stars
Immersion blender warning: be careful, mine splattered a bit. But once it settled, the texture was great.

  32. User avatar brian.rice30 says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight—so cozy. I used a little less sugar and it was still perfectly balanced. The immersion blender step is key. Thanks!

    1. User avatar tiesha.stokes says:

      3 stars
“Perfectly balanced” with less sugar? hmm. I always add the full teaspoon bc otherwise it tastes too acidic to me 😅 But hey, if yours was good that’s awesome.

    2. User avatar keena.fritsch1951 says:

      5 stars
So glad it worked for you! I also love that immersion blender step—makes it super silky. 😊
What kind of tomatoes did you use (canned or fresh)?

  33. User avatar ashely.ullrich says:

    4 stars
Easy to make and very delicious! I added some croutons on top and it was a hit with the kids.

  34. User avatar Tangela Moen says:

    3 stars
I’m not sure about 4 cups tomatoes being enough—mine felt thin? Maybe my tomatoes were juicier? Still tasty though, just needed a longer simmer.

  35. User avatar hang.walter1986 says:

    1 star
Why do you put sugar in soup? Makes no sense. Just use ripe tomatoes!

  36. User avatar lorri.runolfsdottir says:

    4 stars
Yummy! But do you really need cream? I just used more broth because I’m not made of money!

  37. 2 stars
Why do people always add sugar to tomatoes? Tomatoes are sweet enough—mine tasted kinda weirdly sweet. Next time I’ll skip it.

    1. 5 stars
Totally get it—tomatoes can vary a LOT. If yours already tasted sweet, skipping sugar makes sense. The sugar is just a little “balance,” not a must.

    2. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      4 stars
I never noticed “sweet” but if the tomatoes are more acidic, a tiny pinch helps. Maybe try like 1/4 tsp next time instead of a full teaspoon?

  38. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    2 stars
OK, can someone explain why we add sugar? Isn’t that weird for soup? Not sure about that ingredient.

  39. User avatar Falmer Gloomlurker says:

    5 stars
This is exactly the kind of tomato soup I like—simple, cozy, and not overly fussy. The basil at the end makes it taste way more fresh than canned stuff.

  40. 5 stars
5 stars. Best soup ever. (and yes I use fresh basil from the garden)

  41. User avatar hanna.jast98 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid for a simple tomato soup. I didn’t have heavy cream so I left it out and it was still tasty, just a bit lighter.

  42. User avatar wally.runte says:

    5 stars
This is the best tomato soup I’ve ever had! So easy and tasty! Definitely a repeat recipe.

    1. User avatar Mallie Goyette says:

Glad you loved it! I’ve been looking for an easy tomato soup recipe to try. I’ll definitely give this one a shot!

    2. 2 stars
I didn’t find it that great. Maybe I did something wrong? I couldn’t taste the tomatoes much.

  43. 5 stars
Wow, this tomato soup is fantastic! So easy to follow the recipe. Will definitely make it again. 🍅

  44. 5 stars
Super simple and tastes way better than canned soup. I added extra basil at the end and it really made it pop.

  45. User avatar leon.waelchi2011 says:

    4 stars
Yum! I added some grilled cheese on the side and it was a perfect meal! 🍅🥪

I thought tomato soup was just for sick days? But this recipe is kinda making me change my mind.

  47. User avatar celine.effertz94 says:

    3 stars
The sugar step is weird to me. Like why are we sweetening tomatoes? But okay… it does balance. I used like half a teaspoon and it was less noticeable.

  48. User avatar tiera.barton1969 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is amazing! The soup was creamy and full of flavor. Will definitely make it again!

    1. 2 stars
I don’t know… sounds kinda basic. What if I added chicken or somethin’? Would it still be a soup?

    2. User avatar tempie.flatley19 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! I made this soup last night and it was delish! Thanks for sharing!

  49. User avatar susie.kihn says:

    1 star
I dont like how this turned out. Too much onion for my taste. 👎

  50. User avatar mohammed.schmidt1960 says:

    4 stars
Solid recipe. I used canned diced tomatoes and it worked fine, though I simmered a bit longer (closer to 30 min) because it was thicker than expected. Great flavor though.

  51. 2 stars
It’s fine. I guess. (I forgot the garlic once and almost cried.)

  52. User avatar jefferey.murray says:

    3 stars
Should have added more salt! It was bland. Next time, I’ll season better.

    1. User avatar deadra.kub29 says:

      3 stars
I disagree! I thought it had a nice balance. Maybe you just don’t like subtle flavors?

  53. 4 stars
Pretty good! I didn’t have fresh basil so I used dried and it tasted… fine? Next time I’ll definitely do fresh. Also, I simmered a bit longer than 20 min and it got richer.

  54. 3 stars
I like soup and I like tomato but the numbers don’t add up for how good this was. I would rate it a 3.

    1. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

      4 stars
I dunno, I think tomato soup is usually pretty simple, maybe you just don’t like it that much? Gave it a 4 for the effort.

  55. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    4 stars
I kinda did my own thing and added some carrots and celery…not sure what that makes but it was good.

  56. User avatar dulcie.okon says:

    2 stars
Too many steps! I just wanted something quick. Bleh.

    1. User avatar shelby.koepp48 says:

      4 stars
I hear ya! Sometimes the simpler, the better! 🌟

    2. User avatar tad.cummings64 says:

      3 stars
But it’s worth it for a good soup! Maybe just try a shorter recipe next time.

  57. User avatar kyle.spinka39 says:

    2 stars
I think 20 minutes simmer is too short—mine tasted kinda thin and needed longer. Also I used vegetable stock and it came out bland, had to add more salt.

  58. User avatar clifford.becker says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have heavy cream so I skipped it, was still good but a little watery. Still, decent recipe!

  59. User avatar jefferey.doyle1972 says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight—so cozy. The basil at the end really brings it to life. I used a little extra cream and it turned out super smooth with the immersion blender.

  60. User avatar bobbye.hoeger43 says:

    3 stars
I found it a bit bland. I think it needs more spices or something? Maybe I’ll try adding some chili flakes next time.
