Stuffed Grape Leaves with Rice and Pomegranate

August 9, 2023

Stuffed grape leaves, also known as dolmas, are a classic dish that has been enjoyed in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines for centuries. Stuffed Grape Leaves with Rice and Pomegranate take this traditional recipe to new heights, adding a burst of fruity sweetness and vibrant color from the pomegranate. This dish is not only delicious but also visually stunning, making it perfect for special occasions or as a unique appetizer to share with family and friends.

The beauty of stuffed grape leaves lies in their simplicity. The grape leaves themselves have a delicate, earthy flavor that pairs perfectly with a savory rice filling. In this version, the rice is seasoned with herbs like dill, mint, and parsley, giving it a fresh and fragrant aroma. The pomegranate seeds add a delightful sweetness and pop of color, balancing out the savory flavors of the rice and herbs while bringing an unexpected twist to the dish.

The rice filling is wrapped tightly in grape leaves and then cooked, allowing the flavors to meld together and infuse the leaves. Once cooked, the stuffed grape leaves become tender and flavorful, with a slight tanginess from the grape leaves themselves. The addition of pomegranate not only enhances the flavor but also gives the dish a lovely sweetness that complements the other ingredients beautifully.

Stuffed Grape Leaves with Rice and Pomegranate are incredibly versatile and can be served as part of a mezze platter, as a side dish, or as a light main course. They can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature, making them perfect for picnics, potlucks, or casual gatherings. For an extra touch, drizzle them with olive oil and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice just before serving.

This dish is a perfect blend of savory and sweet, and the combination of rice, herbs, and pomegranate makes it a memorable and elegant choice for any meal. Whether you’re new to stuffed grape leaves or a long-time fan, this version is sure to impress with its rich flavors and refreshing contrast.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/4 cup pomegranate seeds
  • 1/4 cup parsley chopped fresh
  • 1/4 cup mint chopped fresh
  • 1/4 cup dill chopped fresh
  • 1/4 cup pine nuts
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Salt and pepper black pepper, to taste
  • 30-40 grape leaves rinsed and drained
  • lemon wedges for serving

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, combine the rice, vegetable broth, and 1 cup of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes or until the rice is cooked and the liquid is absorbed.
  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Add the cooked rice to the skillet and stir to combine. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • Stir in the pomegranate seeds, chopped parsley, chopped mint, chopped dill, pine nuts, ground cumin, ground cinnamon, salt, and black pepper.

Took me ages to roll those grape leaves! Is there an easier way? But they taste good, even if they don’t look perfect.

  2. 3 stars
The cinnamon + cumin combo works, but I’m not sure about 1/2 tsp cinnamon. Might be a little sweet/spicy depending on your brand.

  3. User avatar Daag Chokah says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have grape leaves so I used cabbage instead and it turned out fine. Not the same, but still good!

    1. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

      2 stars
Why not just get grape leaves? Cabbage is ok, but grape leaves are traditional for a reason. 🤔

    2. 4 stars
Cabbage?! Really? That’s a wild swap. But glad it worked for you! Might give it a try myself.

  4. User avatar donnie.herman says:

    5 stars
Wow amazing! I love how fresh the herbs make it taste. Perfect appetizer for my dinner party!

  5. 5 stars
These were absolutely delicious! The pomegranate seeds add such a nice sweetness. Will make again!

  6. User avatar tennille.zboncak says:

    5 stars
These were surprisingly fancy for a weekday dinner. The pomegranate + herbs combo is legit—felt bright and not heavy. I used whatever grape leaves I had and it still worked.

  7. User avatar tennie.hauck says:

    1 star
Totally misleading, takes like forever. I’d rather order takeout next time. 1 star!!!

    1. User avatar mack.okon39 says:

      5 stars
I think it sounds delicious! Maybe you just need to practice rolling them. It’s not hard once you get the hang of it. 5 stars from me!

  8. User avatar Shaniqua Doyle says:

    4 stars
Can I use brown rice instead? I heard it’s healthier but not sure if it will work in this.

  9. 2 stars
I tried it and the cinnamon tasted weird with the cumin—like dessert vibes. I know it’s traditional in some places, but I’m probably lowering the cinnamon next time.

  10. User avatar perry.streich73 says:

    4 stars
Way too many herbs lol. Still, I bet it tastes fresh. My only question is where do you even find pine nuts without paying a small fortune?

  11. 5 stars
Simple and tasty! I’ll make these again for sure. My mom would be proud!

    1. User avatar isaac.keebler51 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! I love when recipes remind us of family. Did you make any changes to the recipe?

    2. User avatar Gag Halfrunt says:

      2 stars
Sounds good, but grape leaves? I dunno, not sure about that taste. Is it really that good?

  12. User avatar lindsay.gerhold2014 says:

    4 stars
These were delicious! I added some feta cheese on top for extra flavor. Yum!

  13. 3 stars
Way too much mint for my taste… I should’ve dialed it back. Next time I’ll do half and maybe add more parsley so it’s balanced.

  14. User avatar lionel.larkin says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid instructions. I used brown rice by accident and it still worked, but took way longer than the 15 minutes step (duh). Flavor was still great—mint + dill is a winning combo.

  15. User avatar madalene.haag91 says:

    3 stars
My rice was a bit mushy after simmering and then again in the pot. I’d reduce cooking time next time or use less water when cooking the rice first.

  16. User avatar mafalda.larson says:

    5 stars
These turned out really flavorful—cumin + cinnamon is a great combo with the pomegranate. My grape leaves were a little tough but still delicious. Will make again!

  17. User avatar denny.wunsch says:

    5 stars
Absolutely love this recipe! The combination of pomegranate and herbs is divine. Made it for a party and everyone asked for seconds!

  18. User avatar jordon.spinka71 says:

    4 stars
Made this as a side dish for a party and it got raves! Next time I may try it with chicken too.

  19. User avatar jason.hyatt says:

    4 stars
The cumin + cinnamon combo is a little surprising but also makes sense. I’m curious how sweet/tangy the pomegranate comes through after cooking.

  20. User avatar dayna.hudson35 says:

    5 stars
The ingredient list is a lot of herbs… I was like, do I really need mint and dill? Answer: yes. It tastes like someone actually knows what they’re doing.

  21. 1 star
These were a disaster for me. I think I overcooked the rice… They fell apart when rolling. 🙁

  22. 1 star
Whaat?! No meat in this? How is that even gonna fill you up? I’m skeptical.

  23. User avatar margarett.goyette71 says:

    5 stars
These turned out way better than I expected. The pomegranate makes the filling taste bright and not just “rice + herbs.” I served with extra lemon and it was perfect.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—pomegranate really levels it up. I didn’t think it would make that much of a difference, but it does.

  24. User avatar janita.daugherty says:

    4 stars
I used chicken broth by accident (had none of the veggie stuff) and they still worked. The filling smelled amazing while cooking—like straight-up Mediterranean comfort.

  25. 5 stars
These grape leaves are amazing! I never knew how delicious they could be. Thanks for sharing!

    1. 5 stars
I’m so glad you loved them! They are truly a hidden gem. Have you tried making them yourself?

    2. User avatar Renato Kozey says:

      2 stars
I don’t know, grape leaves just seem weird to me. How do they taste? Like, is it just rice?

  26. User avatar billie.buckridge says:

    2 stars
Are you sure this is authentic? Pomegranate doesn’t belong in grape leaves, it’s too sweet.

  27. User avatar tyler.white1961 says:

    4 stars
Super tasty! I added some feta cheese and it made them even better, you should try it!

    1. User avatar verda.cormier says:

      3 stars
But isn’t feta too salty for this? I think it might ruin the dish.

    2. User avatar eugenio.king says:

      5 stars
Feta sounds like a great idea! I might try that next time. Thanks for sharing!

  28. User avatar keira.stanton94 says:

    4 stars
Really solid flavor profile. I used dried dill instead of fresh and added a bit extra lemon at the end; still tasted legit. Rolling the leaves was a little tedious but worth it.

  29. User avatar august.jaskolski8 says:

    4 stars
Wow, this recipe is great! But where can I find grape leaves? I looked everywhere!

    1. User avatar Arwen Evenstar says:

      5 stars
You can find grape leaves at most supermarkets in the international food aisle or at Middle Eastern stores. Try looking online too!

  30. 2 stars
I’m skeptical about the cinnamon and cumin combo. It sounds like it could taste weird with grape leaves. But I guess the pomegranate balances it? Mine tasted a bit “spicy-sweet” to me.

  31. User avatar bernarda.bashirian26 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe, but mine turned out kinda soggy. What did I do wrong? 🤔

  32. 4 stars
Easy to follow! We just used regular rice and it was still good. Thanks!

  33. User avatar tran.ziemann says:

    3 stars
Can you use different nuts? I only have sesame seeds right now. Will it still work?

  34. User avatar leon.hilpert1981 says:

    3 stars
Just okay. Didn’t taste much differnt from rice in a bowl. I guess I’m just not a fan of grape leaves.

  35. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe but my grape leaves fell apart. Not sure what went wrong, maybe too much filling?

    1. User avatar lyman.rohan says:

      4 stars
I had the same problem once! Maybe try less filling next time? It’s tricky to roll them without ripping.

    2. User avatar harland.collins89 says:

      3 stars
I think you might have cooked the leaves too long or somethin. They should hold together better. But they are really tasty, right?

  36. User avatar veronika.rath says:

    4 stars
Never tried cooking with grape leaves before. This was a nice surprise! Will make it again. 4 stars!

  37. User avatar teri.lebsack76 says:

    3 stars
Not a fan of the mint, can I skip it? Anyone tried that? 🤷‍♂️

  38. User avatar Howe D. Pardner says:

    5 stars
This is just like my grandma used to make! Brings back so many memories. Thank you!

  39. User avatar salvador.mckenzie2017 says:

    5 stars
I love the combination of flavors here, especially the pomegranate. Nice touch!

  40. User avatar Miss Waneta Schuppe says:

    4 stars
Okay this looks legit. I’ll do it for family dinner. If I mess up the rolls at least the filling will be tasty

    1. 4 stars
I might mess up the rolling too 😅 but if the filling is right, we’re winning. Also, 30–40 min sounds perfect—can’t wait.

    2. User avatar evelynn.brown11 says:

      5 stars
This does look legit! I love the pomegranate + herbs combo. Great for a family dinner—comforty but still fresh.

  41. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    4 stars
    Delish!

  42. User avatar mckenzie.block48 says:

    5 stars
These flavors sound insanely good—pomegranate with mint/dill is such a vibe. I’d probably add a squeeze of lemon right into the filling too.

    1. 5 stars
Omg yes—lemon in the filling would totally brighten the pomegranate and herbs. I’m stealing that idea!

  43. 5 stars
Yum! The pomegranate seeds add a great touch. Thousand times better than the ones at the store!

  44. 2 stars
Not a fan. The grape leaves were too tangy for my taste. I prefer them without the fruit.

  45. User avatar buffy.schuppe2014 says:

    5 stars
5 stars!! My whole family loved the stuffed grape leaves, thank you for sharing!

  46. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

    2 stars
I don’t know about this one. Stuffed grape leaves always seem too complicated. Can I use regular leaves?

  47. 5 stars
Five stars!!! easy enough even for me. My kids ate them (miracle).

    1. User avatar phyllis.hill says:

      5 stars
Five stars for real—love when it’s kid-approved 😄 Those grape leaves intimidate me but your comment gives me hope!

  48. User avatar anjelica.davis says:

    5 stars
These are so delicious! I made them for my family and they loved it.

    1. 5 stars
I’m so glad you enjoyed them! They are truly a family favorite in our household too.

  49. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    3 stars
Mine turned out too mushy after 40 minutes—maybe I packed them too tight or my pot runs hot. Still tasted great though.

  50. 2 stars
The mint was too much for me! Seems like everyone loves this, but I think I’ll try it without mint next time. 2 stars.

  51. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but I think my rice was a little undercooked before rolling. Next time I’ll simmer it 2-3 minutes longer. Still tasty though.

    1. User avatar guy.goodwin says:

      5 stars
Good call—rice can be a little finicky since it keeps cooking a bit during the simmer. I’ve done 17–18 min on the initial rice too and it helps a lot.

    2. User avatar gonzalo.koelpin1991 says:

      4 stars
That sounds about right. If you’re undercooked, longer simmer in step 1 or a splash more water usually fixes it. Glad it was still tasty though!

  52. User avatar Draugr Deathlord says:

    5 stars
This is basically my childhood but fancier. Lemon on the side is the correct move. The herb mix is perfection.

  53. User avatar fernando.tromp says:

    1 star
Kinda confused on step 6: “enough water to cover” like how much, a cup? I winged it and they turned out mushy. Would not repeat, sorry.

  54. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    5 stars
So good!! My whole family ate them and asked for seconds. I served with extra lemon and it made them pop.

  55. User avatar gino.schneider says:

    2 stars
Not my cup of tea. I thought it would be sweeter with the fruit but it was kind of bland.

    1. 4 stars
I understand how you feel! I think the pomegranate is supposed to add a bit of tang, but if you’re looking for sweet, maybe add honey next time?

    2. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      3 stars
Bland? Maybe you just didn’t use enough seasoning. I like to put in some extra spices for flavor!

  56. 5 stars
So good! I served them to guests and everyone asked for the recipe. Lemon on the side is a must. I’ll definitely make these again—easy-ish once you get rolling.

    1. User avatar corine.quigley45 says:

      5 stars
Yesss lemon on the side makes them pop! I made these once and now I always keep wedges ready for guests. 😄

    2. User avatar King Kai says:

      4 stars
Easy-ish is right—rolling takes forever 😂 But the flavor is sooo worth it. Did you use jarred grape leaves or fresh?

  57. User avatar adina.kozey25 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is a hit! I made these for my family and everyone loved them. Definitely a keeper!

    1. User avatar Shadowfax says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad to hear that! These stuffed grape leaves are really delicious. I bet they were a hit with your family!

  58. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    3 stars
I don’t get why you would put sweet pomegranate in savory food. Seems weird.

  59. 5 stars
Delicious!!! Going to make these for my grandma, she will love them. 😊

  60. User avatar albina.will says:

    5 stars
Honestly? This is the first time my rolls didn’t unravel. The cooling step for the rice helped a lot. I also lightly chopped the grape leaves’ tough stems and it was perfect.

    1. User avatar laverna.sipes says:

      4 stars
My rolls usually unravel like spaghetti 😅 but your cooling + prepping the leaves makes so much sense. Do you chop the stems really small or just take most of the tough part off?

    2. User avatar Peregrin Took says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I swear cooling the rice is the secret—when it’s still hot it just turns into mush and the rolls fall apart. Gonna try the stems trick too.

  61. User avatar harriet.fahey1992 says:

    2 stars
I thought this was gonna be easier. Rolling those grape leaves is hard! Ended up just eating the filling. 2 stars. 😩

    1. 4 stars
Rolling grape leaves is definitely tricky! I struggled the first time too, but it gets easier with practice. Don’t give up! 🤗

    2. User avatar daina.will63 says:

      3 stars
Honestly, I just microwave the rice with some broth and eat that! Rolling is too much work. 😅

  62. 3 stars
Too salty for me; I always overdo salt though. The rest of it was great, and next time I’ll go lighter and maybe add more lemon.

  63. User avatar brenda.murazik34 says:

    5 stars
These flavors sound amazing—pomegranate + mint + dill is such a vibe. I’d probably add a squeeze of lemon into the filling too for extra brightness.

  64. 4 stars
Yummy! I added some spice to the filling and it turned out great. Will make again!

    1. 2 stars
I mean, it’s just grape leaves with rice, right? Not sure what all the fuss is about.

    2. User avatar Eccentrica Gallumbits says:

      5 stars
That sounds delicious! What spice did you add? I’m thinking of trying something similar.

  65. User avatar David Hauck PhD says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the pine nuts amount… 1/4 cup felt like a lot to me, but maybe I just like a more herby filling. Still tasted nice, just a little heavy.

  66. User avatar dusty.thiel says:

    2 stars
I found this recipe confusing, the steps are a bit mixed up. Does anyone else feel like they could be clearer?

    1. User avatar reinaldo.gislason says:

      3 stars
I actually found it pretty straight forward! Just take it step by step, it works out. 👌

    2. 4 stars
I totally get what you mean! I had a tough time too. Maybe a video could help? 🤔

  67. User avatar junita.terry96 says:

    5 stars
These are actually legit! The pomegranate pop surprised me. I served them as appetizers and everyone kept asking for the recipe.

    1. 5 stars
I made these last week and same… the flavor was way better than I expected. The mint + cinnamon combo is such a vibe.

    2. User avatar wellRespected says:

      5 stars
Yesss! I love when the pomegranate hits—makes it feel fancy but still easy. Glad it worked as appetizers too!

  68. User avatar laverne.bosco says:

    3 stars
The ingredient list looks right, but the instructions are a bit vague. Like, how much salt are we talking? I guessed and it came out bland—had to add lemon and extra pepper.

    1. User avatar MrsLucyG says:

      4 stars
Totally agree—“salt and pepper to taste” is brutal when you’re aiming for that classic flavor. I usually start with ~1/2 tsp salt for the filling, then adjust after tasting.

  69. User avatar andrew.yundt14 says:

    4 stars
easy to follow but my grape leaves broke apart. Maybe I rolled them too tight? Still tasted good tho.

  70. User avatar mittie.little75 says:

    5 stars
Great recipe! Love the fresh herbs. It reminds me of my grandma’s cooking!

    1. User avatar lorenzo.greenholt1984 says:

      5 stars
Thanks! Herbs make everything better, don’t they? My grandma used to make something similar but with tomatoes!

  71. 4 stars
Grape leaves in the summer? Yes please! I’ll try this when my herbs are ready in the garden.

    1. User avatar lavonna.yost2016 says:

      5 stars
Sounds delicious! Can’t wait to try this in my garden too! 🌱

  72. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I messed up the rice timing and it came out kinda sticky. Still, the flavor was good—cumin and cinnamon together is a bold move. Would make again, just with better rice.

  73. User avatar tracee.collins24 says:

    2 stars
Looks good but too many ingredients for me. Can I just use store-bought grape leaves?

  74. User avatar jonah.baumbach says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely and the filling tasted great, but my rolls kept opening. Next time I’ll try cutting the seam side down and using less filling per leaf.

  75. User avatar mac.spencer says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I prefer plain rice in mine, with just salt and pepper. Why complicate?

    1. 4 stars
Complicated? Nah! It’s just some extra ingredients to make it more delicious. You might like it if you try!

    2. 3 stars
Plain rice is great. But have you tried adding some flavor? It’s all about the taste, right?

  76. User avatar horacio.goodwin says:

    3 stars
Mine were kinda bland—maybe I didn’t add enough salt/pepper? Also my grape leaves tore a bit, so some rolls were uglier than yours, lol. Flavor still decent.

  77. 3 stars
Didn’t turn out right, mine fell apart. Is there a special way to roll them?

  78. User avatar Wilford Beahan says:

    5 stars
My family loved it! It’s a new favorite at our dinner table. Will definitely make again!!

  79. User avatar Julius Rogahn says:

    5 stars
These came out insanely good—bright, herby, and not too heavy. The pomegranate really pops. I swapped in quinoa once and it was still tasty, but rice is the classic for sure.

  80. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, the amount of herbs feels like a lot (mint + dill + parsley all together). But once it cooked down, it actually worked. Pine nuts are a nice touch.

  81. User avatar verona.morissette says:

    1 star
Grape leaves? More like grape confusion. Mine fell apart! 😅

  82. 5 stars
Omg yes! The combination of spices is perfect, and the pomegranate gives it a pop! I’m definitely saving this recipe. 5 stars!!

  83. User avatar jaye.oberbrunner1984 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, rolling those leaves is tedious. But the smell when they simmer is worth it.

  84. User avatar rolando.hackett36 says:

    5 stars
Delicious! I toasted the pine nuts first and it brought it to another level. Also, lemon wedges at the end are non-negotiable.

  85. 3 stars
I followed the recipe but it turned out a bit bland for me. Maybe add more spices next time?

  86. User avatar dante.beahan says:

    3 stars
I love stuffed grape leaves, but I feel like this recipe is missing one thing: lemon juice in the filling or cooking liquid. Mine came out a bit muted compared to my usual. Tasty though.

  87. User avatar myesha.hahn says:

    5 stars
These are absolutely delicious! I made them for my family and they were a hit! Will definitely make again.

  88. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

Ugh, why do you need so many herbs? I think it’s overkill. Recipe taste too busy. 1 star.

    1. User avatar Blake Stehr says:

      5 stars
I think you just have to let the flavors blend. The herbs are what make it special! 5 stars from me! 🍃

  89. 2 stars
I’m not convinced grape leaves would tenderize evenly in just 30-40 minutes. Maybe I’m doing it wrong but mine were chewy.

  90. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

    3 stars
Instructions are confusing. I rolled them wrong, now they’re a mess. What did I do wrong?!

I don’t even know what grape leaves are. Can I make it with spinach instead?

meh. i think it’s too much sweet/tart from the pomegranate for my taste. Also i didn’t have pine nuts so i used chopped almonds—turned out okay but not the same.

  94. 3 stars
I wasn’t a fan of the pomegranate seeds in this. Seemed a bit too sweet for my taste. 3 stars for the effort.

Stuffed grape leaves r like a hug for your tummy. I love this recipe! Easy to make and delish. 5 stars from me!

  96. User avatar hassan.ullrich22 says:

I’m skeptical about cinnamon in grape leaves—seems like it might be too sweet. But honestly it’s subtle and not weird? I stand corrected.

    1. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

      5 stars
I was worried about that cinnamon too, but it really does stay subtle. The pomegranate and herbs carry the flavor.

    2. User avatar ellsworth.swift says:

      4 stars
Cinnamon with grape leaves? My grandma would roll her eyes 😂 But I gotta admit the cumin + cinnamon combo is legit.

  97. User avatar Ali Katt says:

    3 stars
I don’t know about 30-40 grape leaves. My bag had a random amount and I was short. Maybe specify if using jarred leaves—timing totally depends.

  98. User avatar rosena.kertzmann1952 says:

    2 stars
Eh, they were kinda bland. I thought there would be more flavor. Might add more spices next time.

  99. User avatar Ethel L. Cahall says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, rolling the leaves is kind of a pain. I burned my fingers once lol. But the final texture was good and the lemon at the end was perfect.

  100. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    3 stars
So confusing with the steps! I couldn’t keep track, but they turned out okay. I guess…

  101. User avatar charmaine.pouros99 says:

Pine nuts are expensive 😅 but I tried it once and yeah, it’s better. If you skip them, I think the dish still works.

    1. User avatar celinda.witting says:

      3 stars
I disagree a bit—pine nuts bring a buttery flavor that ties the spices together. If you skip them, I’d add a little olive oil or even a few extra pomegranate seeds to balance.

    2. User avatar shavonda.lind71 says:

      5 stars
Yeahhh pine nuts are not budget-friendly 😅 I’ve subbed toasted sunflower seeds once and it still had that nice crunch. I think you’re right—still works without them, just less “luxury.”

  102. 3 stars
Not sure about the 1 cup rice + only 15 minutes simmer first—won’t it be undercooked? Maybe it’s fine once it steams inside the leaves, but I’d check.

  103. 3 stars
I don’t know… 40 minutes in a pot still left my grape leaves a little tough. Maybe my leaves were older or I didn’t cover enough. Still edible, just not “wow.”

    1. User avatar grasshopper says:

      4 stars
Totally get that—grape leaves vary a lot. If yours were older, they really do take longer to soften. Next time, I’d simmer closer to 45–60 min and make sure they’re fully covered with liquid (I sometimes add a small plate on top too).

  104. 4 stars
Can someone tell me if the grape leaves are supposed to be jarred/brined or fresh? Mine were super salty and I had to adjust the filling.

  105. User avatar Feyd-Rautha Rabban says:

    5 stars
These stuffed grape leaves are absolutely delicious! The pomegranate adds such a nice touch.

  106. User avatar wellRespected says:

A whole cup of rice seems like too much. I feel like I always end up with leftovers. 😒

    1. User avatar graig.runolfsson86 says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean! A whole cup does seem like a lot. Maybe just use less rice next time. It might work out better.

  107. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

    3 stars
Y’all sure grape leaves are healthy? I heard they’re not good for you. But these are kinda good, I guess.

  108. User avatar Glossu "Beast" Rabban says:

    2 stars
Yuck! Not a fan of the grape leaves. I ended up just eating the filling with a spoon. 😂

  109. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    4 stars
Pretty tasty, but my rice turned out slightly mushy after simmering in the pot. Next time I’ll undercook it a couple minutes. Flavor is solid though.

    1. 4 stars
Glad the flavor worked for you! Rice getting mushy sounds like it might need a touch less time *or* a little more rest before rolling. Did you rinse the rice?

    2. User avatar Deep Thought says:

      5 stars
I do the simmer like 10 min max for long-grain, then finish cooking in the pot with the leaves. Otherwise mine goes same way—soft mushy rice.

  110. User avatar marquita.reilly24 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know. It seems like too many ingredients for something that will end up tasting like leaves. Not for me.

  111. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    5 stars
Pomegranate seeds in the filling?? I was skeptical, but wow. It tastes fancy and fresh. I’ll be annoying my friends with “this is my family recipe” even though it’s not.

  112. 3 stars
I like the ingredient list, but 15 minutes for the rice feels short if it’s uncooked. I’d rather simmer it a bit longer or use parboiled rice.

  113. 5 stars
yum! Also, grape leaves are healthy. My grandpa used to make this without meat, still delicious. ❤️

    1. 5 stars
Sounds delicious! Never thought about making it without meat. Gonna give it a try! 😊

  114. 3 stars
Whoever decided to put cinnamon in grape leaves… I mean, it’s not bad? But I’m skeptical. It tastes kinda like a sweet-meets-savory situation, so adjust if you don’t like warm spices.

  115. User avatar jean.nader says:

    5 stars
Made these last night and they turned out *really* good. The pomegranate makes the filling taste bright, not just “rice with herbs.” My grape leaves were a bit tough though—next time I’ll simmer closer to 45 min.

  116. User avatar doria.jones11 says:

    3 stars
Why add pomegranate? Not a fan! But the rice was nice. Next time, I’ll leave the fruit out.

    1. 4 stars
I totally get you! The rice is great, but pomegranate isn’t everyone’s taste. Try using raisins next time for a sweeter twist!

    2. User avatar rae.beatty1956 says:

      3 stars
But the pomegranate gives it a nice zing! I think you might be missing out. Just mix it well with the rice!

  117. User avatar dominick.mueller says:

    4 stars
I followed the steps pretty closely and the rolls held together well. The cumin/cinnamon combo is the thing—unexpected but works.

  118. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

    5 stars
This recipe is amazing! The pomegranate adds such a unique flavor. I made it for my family and they loved it.

  119. User avatar gil.kautzer39 says:

    4 stars
Made something similar before and this looks legit. Only thing: grape leaves can be a pain to roll, so don’t rush step 5.

  120. User avatar elsy.barton32 says:

    4 stars
Okay but like… do you really “cool slightly” the rice? I rushed and it made the filling messy. Still delicious though.

  121. User avatar catarina.mcglynn81 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, mine were a bit dry. I think I undercooked the rice or didn’t add enough water when simmering. Next time I’ll keep an eye on liquid absorption and maybe simmer a little longer.

    1. User avatar hue.sipes2003 says:

      4 stars
Ugh, sorry—dry grape leaves are the worst. If your rice got dry, it makes sense: the rice stage is only 15 min. I usually add a splash more broth/water *and* make sure the grape leaves simmer long enough (closer to 40).

  122. User avatar Latesha Denesik says:

    2 stars
I’m skeptical about the cinnamon in grape leaves—feels like a sweet-spice thing. Maybe a tiny pinch is okay, but I’d go light.

  123. User avatar malik.swift says:

    2 stars
My pine nuts were stale (I didn’t notice) so the whole thing tasted… kinda off. If your nuts are fresh though, this recipe looks solid.

  124. User avatar Draugr Overlord says:

    5 stars
Honestly this is the kind of recipe I’d eat cold the next day. The lemon at the end is perfect.

    1. User avatar matthew.carter says:

      5 stars
Yes! The lemon at the end really wakes everything up—bright, not heavy. I’m with you on eating them cold too.

  125. User avatar monet.roberts says:

    4 stars
Good recipe, but 30–40 minutes simmering feels a bit short depending on your leaves. Mine were still a touch chewy, so I gave them another 10 minutes. Still tasty though!

  126. 2 stars
Confused by Step 6: “Add enough water… bring to a boil.” How much is “enough”? I ended up winging it and they were slightly undercooked. Needs a clearer measurement.

  127. User avatar lynetta.turner says:

    3 stars
I followed the rice instructions exactly, but mine turned out slightly dry—maybe my broth/water ratio was off? Still tasty, just needed extra moisture in the pot.

  128. User avatar deloise.sipes2000 says:

Made something similar years ago and forgot how long it takes to roll everything. Still worth it though—great comfort food.

    1. User avatar beckie.lowe says:

      5 stars
Love hearing this! I always forget the rolling part too—mine turns into a whole afternoon project, but the flavor is so worth it. Comfort food is exactly right.

  129. User avatar rachel.pfannerstill14 says:

    3 stars
I tried this and honestly it feels like a lot of herbs for one bite. My family liked it, but I’d cut the mint or dill in half next time. Otherwise flavor is good.

  130. User avatar shalanda.thiel says:

    4 stars
I followed the instructions but my grape leaves kept tearing—maybe mine were too old? Still delicious though. Also, pine nuts are expensive now 😭 but the crunch is nice.

  131. User avatar elinore.ratke69 says:

    4 stars
Lowkey hard to roll. Mine kept unwrapping, probably because I didn’t get the leaf flat enough. But the filling? Amazing. I’d still do it again.

  132. User avatar sonia.jenkins says:

    5 stars
This is a lot of work but it’s worth it. Rolling them is oddly therapeutic. Mine didn’t look as neat but they tasted great with lemon.

  133. 5 stars
These sound incredible—pomegranate with all those herbs is such a nice flavor combo. I’d probably toast the pine nuts first for extra depth.

  134. User avatar Grunthos the Flatulent says:

    4 stars
I tried grape leaves once and they were kinda tough… so I’m hoping the simmer time here actually works. The 30–40 minutes seems reasonable though.

  135. User avatar asia.ritchie1963 says:

    5 stars
These grape leaves are such a vibe—bright pomegranate with the herbs is honestly perfect. I used a bit less pine nuts and it still tasted great. 100% making again.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! That pomegranate + herbs combo is seriously the best part. Glad it worked with less pine nuts too—mine always ends up a little different and it’s still delicious 😄

    2. User avatar lynda.halvorson says:

      5 stars
I made these last week and the flavor was so bright it felt kinda fancy for a weeknight lol. I did 3/4 the pine nuts like you and they didn’t suffer at all.
