Slow-Cooker Hot Chocolate

October 9, 2024

Slow-Cooker Hot Chocolate is the perfect answer to chilly days, cozy nights, and festive gatherings. Rich, creamy, and indulgent, this hot chocolate is a far cry from the powdered mixes. It is smooth, velvety, and packed with deep chocolate flavor that instantly warms you from the inside out. The best part is that it comes together effortlessly in the slow cooker, making it ideal for serving a crowd or simply enjoying throughout the day.

There is something magical about the way hot chocolate simmers slowly over a few hours. The gentle heat allows the chocolate to melt perfectly into the milk, creating a luxurious texture that feels both comforting and decadent. The slow-cooker method also fills the entire home with the sweet, inviting scent of chocolate, adding to the cozy atmosphere.

This is not just any hot chocolate. It has that rich, café-style flavor with a creaminess that comes from real chocolate and milk working together. It strikes the perfect balance between sweet and indulgent without feeling overly heavy. You can easily adjust the richness by choosing different types of chocolate, from milk to semi-sweet or dark, depending on how intense you like it.

Slow-Cooker Hot Chocolate is also wonderfully customizable. A splash of vanilla or peppermint extract can add a festive twist. For something a little more grown-up, a touch of espresso or a dash of your favorite liqueur can elevate the experience even further. Toppings are where the fun really begins. Think whipped cream, marshmallows, crushed candy canes, chocolate shavings, or a drizzle of caramel.

Perfect for holiday mornings, movie nights, or anytime you want to treat yourself, this hot chocolate is as much about the experience as it is about the flavor. It invites you to slow down, pour yourself a mug, and savor the moment. Whether shared with friends and family or enjoyed solo with a good book, Slow-Cooker Hot Chocolate delivers pure comfort in every sip.

Yall, I forgot the cocoa! 😱 Still good tho, just like drinking chocolate milk. Will try with cocoa next time.

    1. User avatar Bill Feil DVM says:

      5 stars
Glad you still enjoyed it! Chocolate milk sounds awesome! 😍

    2. 3 stars
Cocoa is super important tho! How does it taste without it? Just sweet milk? 🤔

  2. 5 stars
Whipped cream + this = heaven. Actually super smooth, no gritty bits. Love it!

    1. User avatar omar.moen2024 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Whipped cream on top is the move 😍 Glad yours came out super smooth—mine usually turns out silky once the chips fully melt.

    2. User avatar Slartibartfast says:

      3 stars
Interesting… I tried something similar but it got gritty for me. Maybe I didn’t stir enough or the cocoa clumped? Do you use chocolate chips that are finer or just the regular kind?

  3. User avatar Spriggan Earth Mother says:

    5 stars
This is dangerously easy. I did 2 hours on low like it says and it turned out super silky. Next time I’ll cut the sugar a bit because the chips are already sweet.

  4. 5 stars
This is dangerously easy. The slow cooker makes it super smooth—no scorching, no babysitting. Love the cocoa + chocolate chip combo!

  5. User avatar benedict.sawayn46 says:

This is the best hot chocolate I’ve ever made! So rich and creamy!

    1. User avatar bobbye.langosh8 says:

      3 stars
It’s good but a bit too sweet for me. I might cut back on the sugar next time.

    2. 5 stars
I totally agree! This recipe is a game changer for cold nights!

  6. User avatar Prince of Hyrule says:

Can I use almond milk instead? Lactose intolerant here. Thx!

    1. User avatar danielle.maggio3 says:

      5 stars
Yes, almond milk should work fine! Just make sure to pick a sweetened one for extra flavor. Enjoy your hot chocolate! 😊

  7. User avatar rhonda.konopelski82 says:

    2 stars
Why is heavy cream necessary? Seems a bit extra to me. 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      5 stars
Heavy cream makes it richer and creamier! Totally worth it. 😋

    2. 3 stars
I dunno, I think you could just use regular milk and it would be fine? Heavy cream feels fancy.

  8. User avatar wilmer.bechtelar60 says:

    2 stars
Way too sweet for me. I know it says “adjust to taste,” but 1 cup sugar is a lot. I’d recommend half next time.

    1. User avatar graham.altenwerth93 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—1 cup sugar is a lot, especially with semi-sweet chips already in there. I’ll try your half suggestion next time.

  9. User avatar tajuana.hackett1991 says:

    4 stars
I can’t believe how easy this was! I threw in some peppermint extract too, it was awesome!

    1. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

      2 stars
Really? Sounds too sweet to me. I think I would pass on the peppermint. 🤔

    2. User avatar conrad.larkin84 says:

      5 stars
I’m glad you liked it! Peppermint adds a nice twist! 😍

  10. User avatar morgan.rogahn11 says:

    3 stars
It turned out too sweet for me, maybe next time I’ll cut the sugar in half.

  11. User avatar reynaldo.mcglynn65 says:

    5 stars
This is dangerously cozy. The texture is creamy and not grainy (which usually happens when I try to rush chocolate). Would totally make for a movie night again.

    1. User avatar stephen.konopelski1968 says:

      5 stars
I tried rushing chocolate before and it went all weird/grainy too. This sounds way more forgiving—movie night hot chocolate is the best plan. What toppings do you usually go with?

    2. 5 stars
Right?! “Dangerously cozy” is exactly it 😂 I love how the slow cooker keeps the chocolate smooth without that grainy mess.

  12. 5 stars
Perfect for cozy nights! I added some cinnamon on top and it was amazing!

  13. User avatar vinnie.lockman57 says:

    2 stars
It was ok, but I think I prefer just making it on the stove. Less time too!

  14. User avatar bobby.botsford61 says:

    4 stars
My friend said it was too rich but I loved it! So indulgent.

  15. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    4 stars
The vanilla at the end is a nice touch. I served it with marshmallows and it felt like a fancy cafe drink.

  16. User avatar vannesa.friesen28 says:

    5 stars
    Hot choco!! Yes!!

  17. 5 stars
Loved making this for our game night! Everyone had seconds! Will definitely do again.

  18. 1 star
Isn’t heavy cream too much? I think it will make me sick.

  19. User avatar ricardo.volkman says:

    5 stars
Best hot choccy ever!! ☕️🍫 Thank you for sharing. Perfect for winter nights.

  20. User avatar Peregrin Took says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but mine separated a bit after I added the vanilla (could be user error). Also, 2 hours feels short—I’d go 2.5 next time for melting.

  21. User avatar angelo.mayert1988 says:

    4 stars
I made this for my kids and they loved it! So creamy and rich.

  22. User avatar wen.armstrong54 says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe but mine turned out too sweet. Maybe less sugar next time?

  23. User avatar danyell.gaylord20 says:

    1 star
Wow, this was way too much work for hot chocolate! Not worth it for me.

  24. 4 stars
I was skeptical at first but gave it a shot. It was actually really good! A little too sweet for me, though.

  25. 1 star
    Hot choc late!!!

    1. User avatar naomi.bartoletti says:

      3 stars
Sounds good, but that much sugar? Isn’t it too sweet? I think I’d put less in.

    2. User avatar Vroomfondel says:

      5 stars
Yum! I love hot chocolate, especially when it’s slow-cooked. Can’t wait to try this! 😍

  26. 4 stars
Okay but why does it say to whisk in the slow cooker… I’m not trying to scrape melted chocolate off the side lol. I did it in a bowl first and it came out smoother. 10/10 effort paid off.

  27. User avatar millard.collins says:

    5 stars
This hot chocolate is delicious! I used almond milk instead and it was sooo good!

  28. 1 star
I make hot chocolate from a packet, this seems like too much work. Naaaah.

  29. User avatar sherill.stokes98 says:

    4 stars
1 teaspoon vanilla feels like not enough… or maybe my vanilla is weak. I added another 1/2 tsp and it fixed it. Yum!

    1. User avatar brad.lang52 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—1 tsp can disappear in hot chocolate depending on the vanilla. Love that you bumped it up and it actually fixed the flavor!

    2. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      3 stars
I’m not sure about adding more vanilla—doesn’t it make it kinda overpowering? I usually just add extra cocoa instead. But hey if it tasted good to you!

  30. User avatar trey.kovacek1994 says:

    2 stars
I don’t have a slow cooker. Can I make it on the stove? It seems like too much trouble!

  31. User avatar Max Quordlepleen says:

    3 stars
I dunno, it seemed too sweet for my taste. Maybe cut down the sugar next time?

  32. 3 stars
Easy recipe, but I used almond milk and it didn’t taste as good. Anyone else try this?

  33. 3 stars
I didn’t have heavy cream so I subbed half-and-half and it came out less rich. Still tasted like hot chocolate, just not as velvety. Next time I’ll commit to the cream.

  34. User avatar luanne.gerlach1959 says:

    5 stars
This hot chocolate is heavenly! So creamy and rich, my kids loved it! Will make it again for sure!

    1. 5 stars
I’m glad you enjoyed it! It’s such a perfect treat for chilly days. Did you use any toppings?

  35. 3 stars
Not sure about the vanilla extract, will it really make a difference? Sounds weird.

  36. User avatar jamel.reilly18 says:

    2 stars
How do you make it without a slow cooker? I don’t have one and love hot chocolate.

    1. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      5 stars
You can make it on the stove! Just do the same steps but heat it gently while stirring. Easy peasy!

    2. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

      3 stars
I think using a pot on the stove could burn the chocolate… be careful!

  37. 5 stars
So good I even lick the pot clean! 🥰

  38. User avatar aron.greenfelder59 says:

    5 stars
I followed it exactly and it turned out smooth with no graininess. Slow cooker is a cheat code for hot chocolate.

    1. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      3 stars
Huh, mine was kinda gritty though—maybe my cocoa powder was old? I think 2 hours on low might not be enough if the chips don’t fully melt.

    2. 5 stars
Yes!! I tried this and it came out super silky too—no graininess at all. The slow cooker really does make it foolproof. 🍫

  39. User avatar reginald.buckridge says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly but mine was kinda thick? Like pudding-thick, not pourable. Maybe my cocoa powder was extra dense or I measured wrong. Still tasty though.

  40. User avatar bruce.orn62 says:

    3 stars
The cocoa powder measurement threw me off a bit—1/4 cup seems like a lot? Mine tasted a little bitter until I added more chocolate chips. Still good.

  41. User avatar Spriggan says:

    5 stars
Yum! I added a sprinkle of cinnamon and it was fantastic. Will make again!

  42. User avatar hugh.mraz says:

    4 stars
Honestly this is dangerously good. I started with exactly 1 cup sugar and it was sweet sweet, but still delicious. Next time I’ll cut it down for sure.

    1. User avatar palmer.marks27 says:

      5 stars
I tried this and wow… “dangerously good” is right. I used 1 cup sugar too and it turned out rich but still balanced with the cocoa. Cutting a bit next time sounds smart.

    2. User avatar tracey.schaden says:

      4 stars
Wait, you only used 1 cup sugar and it was sweet?? Mine came out super bitter until I added like… extra chocolate and a bit more sugar. Maybe my cocoa powder brand was weird? Either way, glad you liked it!

  43. User avatar shane.doyle says:

    5 stars
Wow, zero effort and it tastes like it came from a cafe. I topped with marshmallows and they melted right in—chef’s kiss.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—this is way better than I expected for something so simple. The marshmallows are such a good move.

  44. 4 stars
Honestly pretty good. I used a little less sugar because my cocoa already feels sweet, and it still tasted rich. Next time I might add a pinch of salt to make the chocolate pop.

  45. User avatar jorge.kulas says:

    4 stars
Honestly I think 2 hours on low is too short. I left it longer and it was much thicker and better. Also my vanilla went in too early—still ok.

    1. User avatar willa.cremin20 says:

      5 stars
I agree—2 hours on low feels rushed. I do closer to 3-4 and it really thickens up. Also I always add vanilla at the end like you said. Nice save!

    2. 3 stars
Hmm I tried 2 hours and mine was kinda thin? Not terrible though. I also dumped vanilla in with the chips… guess I got lucky. Next time I’ll extend the cook time.

  46. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    1 star
I dunno, my slow cooker went crazy and burnt it. So…. not gonna make this again.

  47. User avatar weldon.rogahn2021 says:

    4 stars
Mine clumped a little at first (probably because I didn’t whisk enough). After stirring a couple times it came together. Not bad.

  48. 2 stars
Meh. Too sweet for my taste even with less sugar, and the cocoa flavor got a little muted. I’d reduce sugar and maybe add a pinch of salt next time.

  49. User avatar kasandra.balistreri1994 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about cooking chocolate in a slow cooker without scorching. It came out fine, no graininess, so I’ll give it props.

  50. User avatar iesha.parker says:

    4 stars
Came out pretty good, but I think next time I’ll cut the sugar a bit. Still rich though—my kids were obsessed.

    1. User avatar roberto.jacobson0 says:

      5 stars
Totally get it—this is definitely a rich hot chocolate. Cutting the sugar makes sense though. I might try 3/4 cup next time and see if it hits that sweet spot without tasting flat.

    2. User avatar Margot Fenring says:

      3 stars
Rich is an understatement 😅 Mine came out kinda thick even though I stirred. I think I accidentally used dark cocoa? Next time I’ll do less chocolate chips too—unless that’s why it was so sweet. Kids love it anyway lol.

  51. User avatar Leopoldo Rutherford I says:

    4 stars
I don’t have a slow cooker. Can I make this on the stove? Asking for a friend.

  52. User avatar elda.pouros43 says:

    5 stars
I was skeptical because the sugar amount felt high, but it balanced perfectly with the cocoa and chips. Super creamy after 2 hours.

    1. User avatar teodoro.herman2000 says:

      4 stars
Okay but “1 cup sugar” still scares me 😅 I’m glad it actually works though—2 hours makes me hopeful for that thick, creamy texture.

  53. 5 stars
This is dangerously easy. I used 1% milk once and it still worked, but the richness wasn’t the same—whole milk + cream is the move.

  54. User avatar jesse.bahringer2015 says:

    5 stars
This hot choco is not just a drink; it’s a hug in a mug! Love it!

  55. User avatar Ilban Richese says:

    5 stars
Not gonna lie, this sounded too easy and I was skeptical… but it actually worked! My kids loved it. ⭐️

  56. User avatar Frost Atronach says:

    4 stars
Smells amazing but I’m skeptical about 2 hours only. I thought it would take longer to fully melt. Still worked though—just stirred more often.

  57. User avatar blaine.bradtke91 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about using chocolate chips instead of melting chocolate first. But it worked, and it tasted rich!

  58. User avatar towanda.hessel10 says:

    3 stars
They say you gotta use whole milk, but I used low fat and it was fine. Just sayin’

    1. User avatar keila.leffler says:

      4 stars
I always use low fat too! Works just as well, right? Milk is milk, lol.

  59. User avatar Ford Prefect says:

    5 stars
My kids loved it! We did marshmallows and whipped cream. Next time I’m adding a tiny bit of cinnamon because they always ask for “the warm spice hot chocolate.”

    1. 5 stars
So glad your kids loved it! 😄 Marshmallows + whipped cream is a perfect combo. Cinnamon sounds awesome too—makes it taste more like “warm spice” hot chocolate!

    2. User avatar elly.ratke27 says:

      2 stars
Hmm I feel like adding cinnamon might mess with the smoothness? Like… wouldn’t it get grainy in the slow cooker? Maybe add it after cooking? Also I used chocolate cocoa only once and it was way too bitter for my taste.

  60. 3 stars
I tried to do “whisk together” but the sugar didn’t fully dissolve at first. I kept stirring like the recipe says and it eventually smoothed out. Patience helps!

  61. User avatar Pit Wolf says:

    2 stars
Mine turned out grainy 😕 I whisked like the recipe said, but the cocoa powder never fully dissolved. Anyone have tips?

    1. User avatar bessie.corwin60 says:

      3 stars
Grainy cocoa is usually user error… or your cocoa was old. I’d just blend it with a hand blender after it’s hot for a minute. If it’s still chunky, maybe add a splash more milk and stir longer. Slow cooker can be kinda stubborn.

    2. User avatar Quickbeam says:

      5 stars
Mine did that once—turns out cocoa powder needs heat ASAP. I suggest whisking the cocoa powder with a couple tablespoons of the warm milk first (like make a little slurry), then add it to the slow cooker. Also don’t skip stirring mid-way (after ~1 hour) so it stays smooth.

  62. User avatar Chad Donnelly says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight—so creamy and way easier than stovetop. I used slightly less sugar and it was perfect. The vanilla at the end makes a huge difference.

    1. User avatar Loonquawl and Phouchg says:

      5 stars
Love this! I agree—slow cooker makes it so much smoother than doing it on the stove. Also good call on using a little less sugar.

  63. User avatar ollie.torphy says:

    3 stars
Wow, I didn’t have cocoa powder so I used chocolate syrup. It worked, kinda messy tho.

  64. User avatar nikia.reinger says:

    3 stars
Hot chocolate is good, but isn’t this just melted chocolate and milk? Seems kinda basic.

  65. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    3 stars
I cooked mine about 3 hours and it got kinda thick? Like pudding-ish. Maybe my slow cooker runs hot. Flavor was good.

  66. User avatar carrol.will44 says:

    5 stars
Yum! Can’t wait to try this on a snowy day! ☕️❄️

  67. 2 stars
Idk, mine separated a bit—like the cocoa sat on the bottom. Maybe I whisked too slow at the start.

    1. User avatar theron.hauck says:

      3 stars
Hmm idk, mine never separated. Maybe you used too much cocoa or didn’t melt the chips fully—2 hours on low should do it. Also cocoa always sinks, like gravity is real lol. Try turning the slow cooker higher or stir more often.

    2. User avatar dora.veum1982 says:

      4 stars
That happens to mine sometimes too—usually I think the cocoa (and maybe the chips) need more thorough mixing before it sits. I now whisk longer right at the start and give it a good stir after like 30–40 minutes. Your “whisked too slow” theory sounds pretty spot on.

  68. User avatar kera.reinger1988 says:

    5 stars
So good! I added a pinch of cinnamon and it took it to the next level! Yummy!

    1. User avatar everette.wisoky says:

      5 stars
Cinnamon?! That’s a great idea! I never thought of that! Gonna try it for sure! Thanks!

  69. User avatar abdul.bosco30 says:

    5 stars
My kids loved it—like legit they were asking for ‘the chocolate milk’ again. I added marshmallows and it was gone fast.

  70. User avatar nicole.lakin2 says:

    3 stars
It was okay, but I felt like it was too sweet for my taste. Maybe cut down on the sugar next time.

  71. User avatar Tish Hughes says:

    2 stars
Honestly, who needs a recipe for hot chocolate? Just melt chocolate and add milk. This is too complicated.

  72. 3 stars
Mine turned out a little too thick like pudding. Maybe my slow cooker runs hot? Still tasty though, and the vanilla helped a lot.

  73. User avatar randy.douglas says:

    3 stars
Weirdly, mine was super thick after the 2 hours. I had to add a splash of milk to thin it out. Maybe my slow cooker runs hot?

    1. User avatar francesco.rohan says:

      4 stars
Mine got super thick too! I think either the chocolate-to-milk ratio or my cocoa brand (very dark) made it thicker. I added a little more milk and it loosened right up.

  74. User avatar tyler.paucek says:

    3 stars
It’s good, but I feel like it could be richer. I might add extra cream or a little more chocolate next batch.

    1. User avatar brock.koelpin91 says:

      3 stars
Maybe don’t add more sugar though? I tried sweet hot chocolate once and it got kinda cloying fast. Also, 2 hours seems short—wouldn’t it be better like 4 hours so it thickens? Idk 😅

    2. User avatar malcom.bode30 says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—this recipe is more “balanced” than super decadent. Adding a splash more cream or a bit extra chocolate chips will definitely make it richer. I’d start with 1/2 cup extra cream or 1/2 cup more chips and adjust from there.

  75. User avatar christin.hane says:

    5 stars
This is the best hot chocolate recipe I’ve ever tried! So creamy and delicious! 5 stars!

  76. 5 stars
Yum!!! Perfect for winter nights with friends. Just add some marshmallows and you are set!

  77. User avatar jaime.rolfson1955 says:

    5 stars
This hot chocolate recipe is amazing! So creamy and delicious! Totally a hit with the kids!

  78. User avatar aubrey.welch0 says:

    3 stars
It never fully thickened for me, more like a silky chocolate milk. Maybe my crockpot runs cool? Still tasty.

    1. User avatar dallas.bauch1993 says:

      3 stars
Your comment makes sense—2 hours on low might not be enough depending on the crockpot. I usually cook mine 3-ish hours or stir more often. Also, are you using regular cocoa powder or Dutch processed? That can change thickness.

    2. User avatar clemente.upton24 says:

      4 stars
Happened to me too. I ended up simmering it uncovered on the stove for like 5-10 min at the end and it thickened a lot. Maybe your crockpot just runs cool, yeah.

  79. User avatar margareta.schumm says:

    3 stars
This hot chocolate was ok, but where’s the marshmellows? You gotta have them!

    1. User avatar merle.wuckert says:

      3 stars
I don’t think you need marshmallows, the chocolate is rich enough. But yeah, if you like them, go for it!

    2. User avatar ArabianNights says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! Marshmallows make hot chocolate so much better. You can never go wrong with extra toppings!

  80. 1 star
Hot choc with milk? Forget that, I drink it black! 😂

    1. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

      5 stars
I mean, if you like it that way, go for it! But this recipe sounds soooo good with milk!

    2. User avatar Kimberley Brekke says:

      2 stars
Black hot choc? That’s just, like, hot water with cocoa or somethin’. 😂

  81. 4 stars
The chocolate chips melted fine, but I used dark chips and it turned out a little bitter. Vanilla helped, but I’d bump the sugar next time.

This hot chocolate is the best I’ve ever had! So creamy and rich, perfect for winter nights.

    1. 5 stars
I tried this recipe last night and it was AMAZING! Definitely my new go-to for chilly evenings! ❤️

Can you use almond milk instead? Trying to cut dairy. Help!

Tried it with dark chocolate chips and it turned out richer but not as chocolatey as I expected. Also, whisking before cooking helped, so good tip.

    1. 5 stars
Totally get that—dark chips can make it “richer,” but sometimes they don’t bring the same cocoa punch as semi-sweet plus the cocoa powder. Your whisking tip is spot on though; it helps the chips melt more evenly.

I think next time add extra cocoa powder or even a spoon of chocolate syrup? Mine always turns out super chocolatey when I do. Also, I stir like every 20 minutes not just occasionally lol.

I tried this but it was too sweet for me. I prefer less sugar.

I used dark chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet and it turned out richer and less sugary. The vanilla at the end is key.

    1. 5 stars
Nice! I always do dark chocolate too—totally makes sense it’d be less sugary and more rich. And yes, adding vanilla at the end is the move.

  87. 5 stars
I followed it exactly and it worked! The stirring helps a lot—especially the last 30 minutes when it starts to get glossy.

Made this tonight and it came out super smooth. I was worried about the chocolate chips not melting, but after the 2 hours on low it was perfect. Vanilla at the end is the move.

  89. User avatar alfreda.dooley63 says:

Okay but 2 hours on low? I think my slow cooker runs hot because the bottom got thicker faster. I had to stir more often than the recipe says.

  90. 5 stars
Easy and cozy! I stirred a couple extra times just to be safe, but honestly it didn’t need much. Cocoa flavor is there, not just sweet chocolate.

    1. User avatar joey.prosacco96 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—this is the kind of hot chocolate that actually tastes like cocoa, not just sugar. I was also tempted to stir more, but the low cook did the job. Cozy win 👏

    2. 4 stars
I made it and yeah… it was pretty easy. Mine got a little thicker though, maybe I added too much cocoa powder? Still good, but I think I’d use a bit less sugar next time. Delicious anyway.

  91. 3 stars
I followed it exactly, but mine came out a little grainy around the edges. I’m not sure if my cocoa powder was old or if I should whisk more before cooking.

  92. 2 stars
Tastes great, but my slow cooker burnt the bottom! Maybe cook on low for less time? Disappointed.

  93. User avatar samira.paucek42 says:

    3 stars
Okay but… 4 cups milk?? That’s a lot of hot chocolate. Unless you’re feeding a crowd, you’ll end up reheating and it gets thicker.

  94. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    4 stars
Could you do this without chocolate chips? Like cocoa + sugar only? Asking for a friend… (my friend is me).

  95. 4 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly, but I used 3/4 cup sugar since my chocolate chips are sweet already. Still sweet enough and tasted like a fancy cafe mug. Would make again.

    1. User avatar bruna.legros says:

      5 stars
Love this! I’m glad the 3/4 cup sugar worked—“fancy cafe mug” is exactly what I want from hot chocolate. ☕️

  96. 4 stars
Honestly, the slow cooker makes it so convenient. I threw everything in and walked away—came back to melted chocolate, no fuss.

  97. 5 stars
The cocoa powder measurement is spot on. I like the “deep” chocolate taste it gives instead of just sweet milk.

  98. User avatar Grunthos the Flatulent says:

Way too sweet for me with the full cup of sugar. Next time I’m starting with 1/2 cup and adding from there. Still tasty though!

  99. 4 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly, but mine was a little too sweet at first—next time I’ll cut the sugar more. Still, the texture was nice and smooth.

This is okay but kinda plain. I think it needs a pinch of salt or espresso or something to make the chocolate pop. Vanilla alone doesn’t do it for me.

  101. User avatar armand.gusikowski35 says:

I followed it pretty much exactly but I think 1 cup sugar might be a lot for my taste. Next time I’ll cut it down and it’ll be perfect.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—1 cup sugar is pretty sweet for hot chocolate. I usually start with 1/2 cup and add more only if I need it. Your next batch will probably be spot on!

  102. User avatar C. Worthy says:

Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical of cooking hot chocolate in a slow cooker for only 2 hours. Seems like it’d burn the bottom or seize. Mine didn’t burn, but it took more stirring than expected.

  103. User avatar ethelyn.wolf2 says:

    2 stars
I think the heavy cream is just too much. Next time I’ll skip it.

  104. 3 stars
Not bad, but I think the measurements are off. 4 cups milk + 1 cup cream + 1 cup chips feels like it could be thicker. Mine was more like hot chocolate soup.

  105. User avatar fernande.hauck31 says:

This is dangerously good. The slow-cooker makes it so smooth—no grainy bits. I used a little less sugar since my chips were pretty sweet, and it turned out perfect.

    1. 5 stars
Dang, that sounds dangerously good 😄 The slow-cooker really does make it super smooth—no weird gritty texture. Love the idea of dialing back the sugar too.

  106. User avatar otis.cartwright19 says:

    2 stars
Not bad but why would anyone use heavy cream in hot chocolate?? Seems excessive.

  107. 5 stars
Super rich! Just how I like it! I might put in a bit more vanilla next time.

  108. User avatar frankie.monahan27 says:

Wow… I forgot to stir for like an hour and it still kinda worked. Not gonna lie I was expecting burned milk. Tastes good.

Haha that’s awesome! I swear slow cookers are way more forgiving than stovetop. Glad it didn’t burn and still tasted good 😊

Wait an hour?? I always worry chocolate will scorch, but if it worked then my low setting might be the issue. What toppings you use—marshmallows or whipped cream?

  109. User avatar lorilee.goyette5 says:

Kid-approved for sure. I added mini marshmallows on top and it tasted like a fancy café cup. The cocoa + chips combo is a win.

My kids loved this! Best way to warm up on a cold day. ☕

  111. User avatar kelsie.goyette says:

I was skeptical about the 1/4 cup cocoa + 1 cup sugar combo, but it worked out. Next time I might reduce sugar just a touch. Texture was thick and rich.

I followed it pretty closely, but my slow cooker took closer to 2.5 hours to fully melt the chips. After that though, smooth as silk. Will make again.

    1. 5 stars
Oh that’s good to know! I always worry my slow cooker runs “off.” Mine usually takes a bit longer too—glad it still came out silky in the end. ☕️

    2. User avatar isiah.kilback2022 says:

Mine never melts right at 2 hours… I’m not sure if it’s the chips or my slow cooker heat. But your note about ~2.5 hours makes me feel better. Thanks!

  113. User avatar matthew.douglas says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but mine separated a little when reheating the next day. Might be my slow cooker being hotter than average. Flavor was great though—very chocolatey.

  114. User avatar gerald.batz41 says:

I used low-fat milk by accident and it still tasted okay, but it wasn’t as creamy. Heavy cream is key, I guess.

  115. User avatar wm.smith27 says:

Looks easy but I forgot the vanilla at first lol. I added it after tasting and it was still fine. I think next time I’ll do less sugar, because my kids said it was sweet.

  116. 5 stars
This turned out dangerously good. Super creamy and the cocoa depth is on point. I stirred a bit more often after the first hour and it was perfectly smooth—no graininess.

  117. User avatar marquis.marvin1973 says:

This tastes amazing, but 2 hours feels a little short. I left mine for closer to 3 and it was even better.

  118. 1 star
Meh. Tasted okay, but I’ve had better from the packet stuff. Also mine burned a bit on the bottom even though I stirred.

    1. User avatar bryanna.wiza53 says:

      2 stars
That’s disappointing—burning in a slow cooker usually means the heat got too intense or the liner/cooker runs hot. Did you stir more than “occasionally,” and was it on low the whole time? I’ve found mine benefits from a quick whisk again around the 1-hour mark.

    2. User avatar brant.bartell66 says:

      1 star
I think packet hot cocoa is still better honestly 😂 Mine also kinda tasted flat until I added more vanilla and a pinch of salt. Might be the cocoa amount—1/4 cup is a lot if your chips are already sweet.

  119. User avatar calista.bernier61 says:

    5 stars
Tried this tonight—so easy and actually tastes like real hot chocolate, not watery cocoa. The low setting is key. 10/10 would make again.

  120. User avatar Spriggan Earth Mother says:

Honestly I think 2 hours on low is too short? Mine never fully melted the chips until I stirred it and cooked 30 more minutes. Still tasty once it got there.
