Shamrock Shake is the perfect drink to usher in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day. This creamy, mint-flavored milkshake, typically topped with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry, brings together the cool, refreshing taste of mint with the sweet richness of vanilla ice cream. Whether you’re celebrating the holiday or just craving a seasonal treat, the Shamrock Shake delivers a fun, festive indulgence that’s as easy to make at home as it is to enjoy at your favorite fast food spot.
The magic of the Shamrock Shake is in its simplicity. With just a few ingredients – vanilla ice cream, milk, mint extract, and a touch of green food coloring, you can recreate the iconic shake that has become synonymous with March. The mint flavor is light but refreshing, making it the perfect companion to the creamy vanilla base. The addition of whipped cream and a cherry on top is the finishing touch that makes the shake feel extra special, whether you’re sipping it from a cup or sharing it with friends.
What makes the Shamrock Shake stand out isn’t just its taste, but the tradition it represents. For many, this minty shake is a signal of the changing seasons, heralding the arrival of spring and the celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day. It’s a limited-time offering that brings a burst of green to the month of March, and there’s something fun about enjoying a shake that’s just a little bit festive and a lot delicious.
The beauty of the Shamrock Shake is also in its versatility. If you prefer a more indulgent version, add a drizzle of chocolate syrup or some crushed-up mint chocolate candies for a twist. You can also experiment with different milk varieties – from whole milk for richness to almond or oat milk for a dairy-free option. Whatever way you make it, the Shamrock Shake brings a little bit of joy to the day and is perfect for sharing with loved ones during the festivities.

I’m not a big fan of mint, is there a way to make this with chocolate?? Like a shamrock chocolate shake???
This is the second time I’m making it but I forgot the whipped cream! Still good but you gotta have it!
So quick! Like 3 minutes. My kids loved the color and the whipped cream. The cherry made it feel fancy.
Right?? That’s exactly how mine went too—super fast, and the green + whipped cream is such a fun vibe. The cherry really does make it feel “fancy” for basically zero effort. 😊
Yummy! Wish I had this recipe earlier! 🍀
I know, right? This shake is the best! I can’t believe I waited until now to try it! 🍦💚
I followed it but it turned kind of runny? Like milkshake-light. Probably my ice cream wasn’t soft enough to blend fully.
Yummy!! 🍦❤️✨
YUM! Loved it! Perfect treat to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀
I’m so glad you liked it! The green color makes it so festive! 🍀
I dunno… mint in a shake? Sounds weird to me.
Not gonna lie, 5 drops of food coloring feels like a random number lol. I did 10 and it was neon green. Still tasted fine, just looked like radioactive slime.
Yummy! Perfect for St. Patrick’s Day! I added a bit of chocolate syrup on top 😍
That sounds delicious! I wouldn’t have thought of adding chocolate syrup, but I’m intrigued. I’ll have to try it!
Chocolate syrup? Really? That’s kinda weird for a shake like this. Mint and chocolate don’t always go together, ya know?
This is the best shake ever! So creamy and refreshing. My kids loved it!
This is the best shake EVER! Tastes just like the real thing from that fast food place! 🍀
Not sure about the food coloring—feels a little unnecessary. Also I used vanilla ice cream that was pretty sweet already, so I think it might be sweeter than it needs to be.
Yeah I felt that way too—food coloring’s optional. I usually do just a couple drops (or none) and it still tastes like a shamrock shake to me. If your vanilla is already sweet, you could cut back the ice cream a bit or add a splash more milk.
I think the green coloring is kind of the whole point tho lol. But if you used a super sweet vanilla, I get it—mine always comes out sweet with vanilla. Maybe lower the mint extract? Like 1/4 tsp instead of 1/2.
Super easy to make! My kids loved it, we made it green for St. Patrick’s Day and it was a hit! 🥳
I thought the recipe was too easy, like how can it be so tasty with so few ingredients? But wow, it works!
Really? I thought it would be too sweet. How does it taste with just mint and ice cream? I’m skeptical.
I’m glad you liked it! It’s amazing how simple ingredients can make such a fun treat.
My kids loved it! We even added some chocolate syrup. Yum!
YUM. So good!
Yum! Yum! Yum!
Isn’t mint extract kinda weird? How does it even taste in a shake?
Looks delicious! Can’t wait to try it!
1/2 tsp mint extract seems like way too much—mine tasted like toothpaste. Would not make again, sorry.
Not a fan of mint, so I didn’t like this at all. But my boyfriend loved it, so it’s an okay recipe if you like mint stuff.
I tried this but it turned out too minty. I think I used too much extract. Will try again with less!
Kind of skeptical about only 5 drops of food coloring, but it came out a nice shade anyway. The texture was smooth and not icy.
Easy to make, but I prefer my shakes a bit thicker. Maybe less milk?
This is super easy to make but I wish I had known about frozen mint leaves! They are way tastier than extract.
I had a hard time getting the right color. Mine ended up more brown than green. Still tasted okay, but not very festive.
Not gonna lie, I thought “Shamrock Shake” would be more magical than this. It’s basically vanilla + mint. Still, it hits the craving.
This is just what I needed for St. Patrick’s Day! So creamy and delicious!
This is dangerously good. The mint extract really makes it taste like the classic. I added a little extra milk because mine was too thick, but otherwise nailed it!
Totally agree—mint extract is the secret. I did the same thing and it turned out super smooth. Dangerously good is right 😄
I didn’t have any mint extract, so I used peppermint oil… big mistake! It was gross. Stick to the recipe!
I don’t know why you didn’t like it. Peppermint oil is nice if you use very little!
Yeah, peppermint oil is super strong! I made the same mistake once. Lesson learned!
Fun and quick! I didn’t have mint extract so I used peppermint—still good, just way more intense. Next time I’ll stick to mint.
Pretty easy and the color looks awesome. Mine tasted a bit “minty medicine” though—next time I’ll use less mint extract and see.
