Raw Mango Cabbage Salad

June 24, 2024

Raw Mango Cabbage Salad is a vibrant and refreshing dish that brings together bold textures and bright, tangy flavors. With shredded cabbage as the crunchy base and slices of raw mango adding a sharp citrusy bite, this salad is anything but ordinary. It is light, colorful, and packed with nutrients, making it perfect as a side dish or a healthy lunch on its own.

What makes this salad stand out is the use of raw mango. Unlike the sweet ripened fruit, raw mango is firm and tart, offering a natural sourness similar to lemon or lime. When thinly sliced or julienned, it pairs beautifully with crisp cabbage, bringing a zingy contrast that wakes up your taste buds. Raw mango is commonly used in Indian and Southeast Asian cooking to add brightness and depth to savory dishes.

The cabbage, often green or a combination of green and purple, gives the salad its satisfying crunch. It also holds up well to dressings and stays fresh for hours, making this salad an excellent make-ahead option. Add in some shredded carrots, red onion, and fresh herbs like cilantro or mint, and you have a salad that is full of color, flavor, and texture.

For the dressing, a simple mix of lime or lemon juice, olive oil or sesame oil, and a touch of salt, chili flakes, or honey brings everything together. It is light, zesty, and highlights the natural flavors of the vegetables without overwhelming them. A sprinkle of toasted peanuts or sesame seeds on top adds extra crunch and richness.

Raw Mango Cabbage Salad is perfect for summer meals, picnics, or any time you want something cool and refreshing. It is naturally vegan, gluten-free, and full of fiber and vitamins. Every bite is crisp, tangy, and satisfying.

Raw mango? Thought you mean ripe. Why would you want it raw???

    1. User avatar aracelis.ruecker89 says:

      2 stars
I dunno, I always thought ripe mangoes were way better. Can’t understand raw.

  4. 3 stars
Meh. Didn’t like the dressing. Could use a little more zing.

  5. User avatar Tricia McMillan says:

Yummy! But too spicy for my kids, should’ve used less chili next time!

    1. User avatar Draugr Death Overlord says:

      5 stars
For kids, I would just use some bell pepper instead of the chili. It’ll be good and not spicy at all! 😊

    2. User avatar Werewolf says:

      4 stars
I totally get it! Maybe you can try a milder pepper or just skip it altogether next time. The salad sounds delicious anyway!

  6. 5 stars
This sounds super refreshing—raw mango + cabbage is such a good combo. I like that it’s quick and doesn’t need cooking at all.

Err… raw mango? Is that even a thing? I thought mangos are sweet? Not sure about this recipe.

  8. User avatar fermin.oconner79 says:

    4 stars
I tried something similar but with less lemon—big mistake. Here the dressing sounds spot on. I’ll definitely add sesame seeds next time.

  9. User avatar arlene.sawayn42 says:

    3 stars
It was ok, but I didn’t really taste the mango much. Maybe I didn’t use enough?

This salad is so refreshing and tangy! Love the crunch from the cabbage!

  11. 4 stars
So easy! I made it with whatever mango I had and it turned out crisp and tangy. Cilantro and mint together are doing the heavy lifting here. Would make again.

  12. User avatar Glossu "Beast" Rabban says:

I substituted the mango for apples. Srsly didn’t taste good at all! 1 star.

Salad is good, but I had trouble finding raw mango. Can I use canned? 🤔

    1. User avatar Hallie Wisoky says:

      4 stars
Canned mango will work, but it might be mushy. Just be careful with the sweetness! 🙃

    2. User avatar edwin.rodriguez says:

      2 stars
I dunno, canned mango doesn’t seem the same. It’s like, not raw? Maybe it’ll taste weird. 🤷‍♂️

  15. User avatar Samwise Gamgee says:

    5 stars
This salad is super refreshing! I love the tangy mango with the crunch of cabbage! I added some carrots too.

  16. 3 stars
Salad is ok but needs more dressing. It was kinda dry, didn’t hit the spot.

  17. User avatar micah.gulgowski says:

    2 stars
Too much mint for my liking. I’m not a big fan of mint. Next time I’ll skip it.

    1. 4 stars
I totally get you! Mint can be really overpowering. Maybe try using less next time? That might work better for you!

  18. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    4 stars
Mango cabbage salad is a weird combo. But I thought I’d try it for fun. Guess what? I kinda liked it!

    1. User avatar Falmer Shadowmaster says:

      4 stars
Glad you liked it! I thought it sounded strange too, but sometimes weird combos surprise you. 🍽️

  19. 1 star
This recipe is a lie! How can cabbage ever taste good? 😒

    1. 5 stars
I used to think like you! But give it a chance, it’s really refreshing! 🌿

  20. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    5 stars
Tried it as written and it came out crunchy and tangy. The lemon + olive oil dressing is simple but works great.

  21. User avatar mignon.glover1983 says:

    5 stars
Wow. This is crunchy and zingy. I used lime instead of lemon and it was still great—5 stars!

    1. 5 stars
Love that! Lime gives a slightly different tang but it makes sense it would still be punchy. 😄

  22. 3 stars
Honestly, I thought it was gonna be better. Just ok for me.

  23. User avatar bryce.kiehn27 says:

    2 stars
Raw mango is too sour for me… maybe should have added sugar. Not a fan.

  24. 2 stars
Raw mango? Isn’t that just unripe mango? Haven’t tried yet, but sounds odd.

    1. User avatar jess.tremblay41 says:

      2 stars
I don’t know, sounds like a weird combo to me. Why would you use unripe fruit in a salad?

    2. User avatar Spider Soldier says:

      5 stars
Actually, raw mango has a tangy flavor that’s really refreshing! You should definitely give it a try.

  25. User avatar jimmy.beer4 says:

super duper delicious!! 😋 Would make again.

  27. User avatar etsuko.nitzsche2008 says:

Just sayin, I don’t know if salad is supposed to be this complicated??? 10 ingredients? C’mon!

  28. User avatar deidra.harvey6 says:

    2 stars
I dunno… sounds weird. Mango and cabbage? Not sure if I’ll try this.

    1. User avatar nickolas.champlin1983 says:

      4 stars
I get where you’re coming from! Mango with cabbage sounds odd at first, but it’s actually really refreshing! Give it a shot!

    2. User avatar Miss Danna Schultz says:

      2 stars
Sounds like a bad combo. I mean, mangoes are sweet and cabbage is… not! Who puts those together?

  29. User avatar adrien.west says:

    4 stars
Really simple and healthy. I added some diced avocado too, which made it creamier! Yum!

  30. User avatar deandre.homenick1962 says:

    5 stars
Easy to make! I made it for a picnic and it was a hit with everyone! Yum!

    1. User avatar golda.corwin says:

      5 stars
This salad sounds so refreshing! Can’t wait to try it for my next gathering!

  31. User avatar pedro.willms95 says:

    3 stars
This salad is ok but green chili makes it too spicy. Next time, less chili!

  32. User avatar Deandrea Jones II says:

    3 stars
Too many ingredients lol. Just give me the mango and cabbage and I’m good!

    1. 4 stars
I get what you mean! Sometimes less is more. A simple mango and cabbage can be refreshing too!

    2. User avatar lucina.mraz94 says:

      3 stars
But the other ingredients give it flavor! Why would you skip them? You might miss out on something delish!

  33. 4 stars
Not bad at all—pretty tasty and crunchy. I cut the green chili a bit because it was too spicy for me, but overall the balance of lemon and fruit worked well.

    1. User avatar shirley.bruen1954 says:

      5 stars
Glad you liked it! Cutting back the green chili makes total sense—raw mango can be sweet enough that too much heat throws it off a bit. 😄 Did you try it with extra lemon or more fruit to balance?

  34. User avatar zenaida.gleichner23 says:

    3 stars
A realy nice flavor, but I think I put too much salt. Less is more, I guess.

    1. User avatar otis.spencer says:

      3 stars
Too much salt ruins everything! Just use a pinch next time. This salad is also gr8 without too much dressing!

    2. User avatar Draugr Death Overlord says:

      4 stars
Glad you liked the flavor! Yeah, salt can be tricky. I usually start with a little and add more if needed. Hope your next try is perfect!

  35. User avatar lesley.hudson says:

    5 stars
This salad is soooo refreshing! Perfect for summer BBQs. My family loved it! 🌟

    1. User avatar nigel.prohaska30 says:

      5 stars
I tried this and it was DELICIOUS! Can’t wait for the next BBQ! 😍

  36. User avatar janita.murazik89 says:

    4 stars
Tried something similar before, and letting it sit a few minutes really does help. Only thing: raw mango can be a little sour—might need more lemon or a tiny bit of sweet depending on the fruit.

  37. User avatar ronna.abernathy72 says:

    5 stars
Perfect for summer days! I can’t believe how quick it is to make too.

    1. User avatar Cave Bear says:

      2 stars
Sounds good but I don’t really get why raw mango? Isn’t cooked mango better? 🤔

    2. User avatar reyes.balistreri says:

      5 stars
Absolutely love this salad! The flavors are so refreshing, and it really is a breeze to whip up. Perfect for backyard BBQs!

  38. User avatar temeka.jast1950 says:

    5 stars
Great for summer! So light and easy!!! ☀️👍

  39. User avatar gabriele.padberg58 says:

    2 stars
I tried making this, but it was too sour for me. Maybe I used a bad mango? Not sure I’ll do this again.

  40. 4 stars
I’m not usually into raw cabbage, but the mango helped a lot. Still, I’d suggest squeezing the lemon a bit more for stronger flavor.

    1. User avatar andreas.dare99 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree on the lemon—next time I’m definitely going heavier. Raw cabbage can be tough, but mango really balances it out.

  41. User avatar delphine.pfannerstill says:

    2 stars
I don’t know how anyone eats this. Cabbage and mango together?? Weird combo!

  42. User avatar gwyn.leannon says:

    3 stars
Kind of bland for me. The sesame seeds helped, but I think it needs garlic or a bit of honey to balance the sour.

    1. User avatar glady.goodwin94 says:

      5 stars
I totally get that—mine felt a little sharp too. I added a small drizzle of honey and it balanced the sour mango right away. Garlic might be great if you like a punchy flavor!

  43. User avatar sandee.braun1969 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about raw mango, but this actually works! Not too sour, just right!

  44. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    2 stars
Idk, cabbage feels kinda harsh for a salad like this. Also olive oil with lemon juice—seems weird to me, but I guess it’s okay if you like those flavors.

    1. User avatar lincoln.lind2009 says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean about cabbage being “harsh,” but raw mango kind of balances it out with sweetness and acidity. The salad’s kinda meant to be crunchy.

  45. User avatar rogelio.cassin2000 says:

    1 star
I tried this and my fam didn’t like it at all. Y’all are crazy! 😂

  46. User avatar Bipin and Blossom's son says:

    5 stars
So easy to make! I added some nuts for crunch, turned out great. Will make again!

    1. 5 stars
Nuts sound like a great addition! I bet that crunch takes the salad to another level. Can’t wait to try it myself!

  47. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    5 stars
Yum! Sesame on top makes it feel fancy. Even my picky brother ate it (he never eats salad).

  48. User avatar junior.parisian says:

    2 stars
I don’t get the olive oil—feels unnecessary. I used more lemon and it still tasted good, but the oil didn’t seem to add much.

    1. User avatar Trin Tragula says:

      4 stars
Totally get what you mean—olive oil is kind of a “mouthfeel” thing here. The lemon brings the zing, and the oil helps the dressing cling to the mango/cabbage so it doesn’t taste as sharp. If you used extra lemon and it still worked, you basically found your balance—also sesame seeds can add richness if you want to replace some of that olive oil effect.

  49. User avatar clair.mcglynn62 says:

    4 stars
I don’t have green chili, so I used red. Still tasted good but a bit spicy.

  50. 3 stars
Nice recipe, but I didn’t have cilantro, so I used parsley. Still tasted good!

  51. User avatar Gag Halfrunt says:

    5 stars
This salad is so refreshing! I added some crushed peanuts too, it was great!

    1. 3 stars
A salad with peanuts? That sounds kinda weird… but if you like it, who am I to judge?

    2. User avatar Arthur Dent says:

      5 stars
Sounds delicious! I love the idea of adding crushed peanuts. I’ll definitely try that next time!

  52. User avatar rayford.pfannerstill24 says:

    5 stars
This is super refreshing—mango + cabbage is such a bright combo. I added a pinch more chili and it really popped.

  53. 5 stars
This is the tastiest salad I ever made! I added some grilled chicken on top and it was amazing!

  54. User avatar collin.kris48 says:

    3 stars
Is cilantro necessary? I’m not a fan, might skip that.

  55. User avatar ronald.adams says:

    5 stars
Easy peasy to make! My kids even liked it. Good recipe!

  56. 3 stars
I’m confused why olive oil is used here. I tried it without olive oil and it still tasted good, but with olive oil it felt slightly heavy for a salad.

    1. User avatar sal.hilpert says:

      4 stars
Totally fair question—olive oil can make it feel a bit heavier. If you liked it without it, you can probably just use a little less (or swap in a lighter oil). Lemon plus mango already has plenty of flavor.

  57. User avatar Antonia Jacobs Sr. says:

    4 stars
Easy to make and healthy! Love it 🌿

  58. User avatar milton.rowe1978 says:

    3 stars
is there an option for changing the dressing? like, uh, can i add soy sauce?

    1. User avatar clare.johnston1 says:

      4 stars
Soy sauce could work but it might change the whole flavor of the salad! I think the lemon and olive oil combo is really good as it is.

    2. 3 stars
Eh, why not? Maybe soy sauce will taste nice. Just try it out, I guess!

  59. 4 stars
I don’t usually eat salads, but this was tasty. Maybe will try more salads now!

    1. 5 stars
I love that you enjoyed it! Salads can be really refreshing when they’re tasty like this. Keep experimenting! 😊

  60. User avatar mariela.stanton82 says:

    5 stars
My husband said it tastes like “restaurant salad” 😄 The sesame seeds on top really finish it. Next time I’ll chill it longer than just a few minutes.

    1. User avatar shantell.glover says:

      5 stars
Aww that “restaurant salad” compliment is actually the best—those sesame seeds really do give it that finishing touch 😄 Chilling longer definitely makes it even better!

  61. User avatar damion.king38 says:

    4 stars
Kinda doubt how mango and cabbage would taste together… but I tried it and it was delicious! Who knew?

  62. User avatar chester.abernathy56 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have olive oil so I used sunflower oil. Still turned out great! 😊

    1. User avatar norman.gorczany30 says:

      4 stars
Sunflower oil? That’s interesting! I never thought about substituting it. Glad it worked out for you!

    2. User avatar edra.stiedemann1984 says:

      3 stars
Wow, how can you call it a salad if you ain’t using olive oil? 🤔 But if it tastes good, I guess it’s fine.

  63. User avatar grasshopper says:

    5 stars
I loooove this! Perfect for summer BBQs. Who knew cabbage could taste so good?

    1. User avatar joanne.stracke says:

      3 stars
I dunno, cabbage can be kinda bland. How does it make it taste good? 🤔

    2. User avatar Super Saiyan 3 Goku says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! It’s such a fresh and zesty dish. Perfect for those hot days!

  64. User avatar errol.watsica says:

    2 stars
I tried it but found the raw mango too sour for my taste. Might pass next time.

  65. 3 stars
The instructions are easy, but “chilled” at the end—how long you chill? Like 10 minutes or an hour? Also my chili was too strong lol.

    1. 4 stars
I usually chill mine about 15–30 minutes—just enough to cool and let the citrus settle. If you go much longer the mango/cabbage gets softer. Also yeah that green chili can be sneaky strong 😅

    2. User avatar Michael83 says:

      3 stars
Wait… so “chilled” is not like overnight? I did 2 hours and it tasted kinda weirdly bland, but maybe I used less lemon. My chili was also way too strong, I’ll try removing the seeds next time lol. 10 min prob better.

  66. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    2 stars
Too many ingredients for such a simple dish! Less is more, people!

    1. 4 stars
I get what you’re saying, but the flavors all come together really well! Sometimes a lil extra is worth it.

  67. 1 star
Sounds good but I don’t think raw mango and cabbage go together. Who eats this?

    1. User avatar fabian.cummings says:

      2 stars
Yeah, I don’t see the appeal either. Sounds kinda weird to me. Like, who thought of mixin’ those?

    2. User avatar latonya.kris41 says:

      5 stars
I totally disagree! Raw mango and cabbage can make a delicious crunch combo. It’s refreshing! Give it a try!

  68. User avatar tyrell.rowe1982 says:

    4 stars
The instructions are pretty straightforward. I served it chilled and it was gone immediately. Next time I’ll chop the chili finer.

  69. User avatar ambrose.sipes93 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but my mango was stringy and grated unevenly. Texture wasn’t as nice as I expected.

  70. User avatar carmelo.kilback45 says:

    5 stars
This salad is a burst of freshness! The mango adds such a nice tang!

  71. User avatar Spider Worker says:

    4 stars
Very tasty! I added some nuts for crunch. Yum! 4 stars!

    1. User avatar Abdul Stracke says:

      4 stars
Nuts in a salad? That’s an interesting twist! I usually keep mine pretty simple. Glad you liked it!

  72. 3 stars
I loved the flavor but mine came out watery. Maybe I grated the mango too fine or didn’t squeeze the excess juice—still edible though!

  73. User avatar jamar.schaden25 says:

    2 stars
Honestly, I thought raw mango was a weird choice for salad. It’s ok but I won’t make it again.

    1. User avatar birdie.watsica1950 says:

      5 stars
Really? I love raw mango in salad! It gives such a fresh kick! Maybe try adding some avocado next time?

    2. User avatar donnell.heidenreich33 says:

      4 stars
I think raw mango adds a nice tangy flavor! You should try it with some grilled chicken too!

  74. User avatar shawanna.olson says:

    5 stars
Loved the freshness! Mint especially made it taste like restaurant food. Will make again for sure.

  75. 2 stars
Chili overload… my fault for chopping the whole thing. If you’re sensitive to heat, start with half a chili. Other than that, it was bright and fresh.

  76. User avatar marion.howell12 says:

    5 stars
This is super refreshing! The raw mango + cabbage combo is unexpectedly addictive, and the mint makes it feel so light. I followed the recipe pretty closely and it turned out great.

  77. User avatar bethann.bosco98 says:

    3 stars
I don’t get the point of raw salads. Cook ur veggies people! Anyway, I guess some like it. 3 stars.

    1. 4 stars
But raw veg is so crunchy and fresh! Cooking them changes the flavor. You might wanna give it another go!

    2. 5 stars
I love raw salads! They keep the nutrients intact. Cooking often kills them. You should try it, it’s refreshing! 😊

  78. User avatar whitney.runte44 says:

    3 stars
Mine turned a little watery after resting. Maybe my mango was too juicy? Next time I’ll drain or use less lemon juice.

    1. User avatar dario.sauer76 says:

      5 stars
That makes sense—mangoes can be super juicy. I usually grate and then squeeze the mango a tiny bit with a paper towel before mixing, and it fixes the watery part.

  79. User avatar samatha.braun2025 says:

    4 stars
    Good salad. Period.

  80. User avatar frederica.rowe1996 says:

    5 stars
This sounds super refreshing—raw mango + cabbage is such a good combo. I’ll probably add a pinch more salt and extra mint. The lemon-olive oil dressing feels perfectly light.

  81. User avatar Deku Royalty says:

    5 stars
Yum! I didn’t have mint so used basil instead and it worked great. My family loved it!

  82. User avatar ceola.mitchell says:

    2 stars
Honestly, I don’t get the hype. Raw mango salads always make my stomach feel weird. Flavor was okay, but I don’t think I’ll repeat it.

  83. User avatar Death Hound says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but mine got watery. I think I grated the mango too finely or used a very juicy one. Still ate it tho 😅

  84. 3 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about how the cabbage tastes raw with mango. But if you rest it “a few minutes” like that, maybe it mellows?
