Japanese-Style Seafood Spaghetti

August 8, 2023

If you love both Italian and Japanese cuisines, Japanese-Style Seafood Spaghetti is a must-try. This unique fusion dish combines the rich, savory flavors of seafood with the light, delicate touches of Japanese ingredients, creating a truly unforgettable pasta experience. It’s a perfect balance of umami and freshness, with seafood taking center stage in a light, flavorful sauce.

At the heart of this dish are the fresh, tender seafood ingredients. You can use a variety of seafood such as shrimp, mussels, scallops, and squid, or whatever is in season or available. These ingredients are sautéed to perfection, bringing out their natural sweetness and brininess.

The magic of this Japanese-style spaghetti lies in its sauce. Instead of using a heavy tomato-based sauce or a traditional Italian garlic and olive oil dressing, this dish uses a combination of soy sauce, mirin (a sweet rice wine), and a touch of sake. These ingredients create a light but flavorful sauce that enhances the seafood without overpowering it. A dash of sesame oil adds an extra layer of depth, and a little grated ginger provides a subtle zing, brightening the overall dish.

The spaghetti itself is cooked al dente, and then tossed with the seafood and the umami-rich sauce. The noodles absorb the sauce, making each bite flavorful and satisfying. To elevate the dish, a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds, sliced scallions, and a touch of chili flakes can be added for extra texture and a hint of heat.

This Japanese-style seafood spaghetti is perfect for a light dinner or a special meal that’s sure to impress. It offers a beautiful combination of flavors and textures — the sweetness of the seafood, the depth of the soy-based sauce, and the chewy pasta that ties it all together.

In summary, Japanese-Style Seafood Spaghetti is a delightful fusion dish that brings the best of both worlds. It’s simple, flavorful, and packed with fresh seafood and umami-rich ingredients, offering a perfect balance of Italian comfort and Japanese elegance.

Yummm! My family devoured this. The flavors were on point. Definitely gonna make this again! ❤️

The instructions are a little vague—like how much heat “medium” is for a wok? I ended up browning my onions too much. Also I think I forgot sugar (or maybe it was salt??) but it still tasted good, so I’m keeping the recipe anyway.

I followed it pretty much but it came out a tad salty. I’ll probably reduce soy sauce next time or add a splash of pasta water to loosen it up. Still tasty though.

Easy recipe! My kids loved it but I would swap the seafood for chicken next time.

I feel like chicken would totally work here! My kids are picky eaters too, so I’m always looking for alternatives that they’ll enjoy.

Seafood spaghetti sounds fancy!! What even is oyster sauce? Why not just use regular sauce?

Seafood spaghetti sounds fancy but my brain kept thinking “doesn’t pasta get soggy?” It didn’t! Good toss and coating.

    1. 5 stars
Totally thought the same thing—seafood + pasta usually turns into sad mush. But your comment makes me want to try it. The “toss and coating” part sounds key!

I dunno… seafood spaghetti still sounds kinda weird to me 😅 like won’t the noodles get too salty with soy and oyster sauce? Also I always forget to drain pasta good. How did yours not get soggy though?

Didn’t taste much like Japan to me… more like my mom’s spaghetti. Confused.

I think it’s unfair to compare it to spaghetti. This is more of a fusion dish! Maybe your tastebuds aren’t used to it?

Spaghetti? I thought it was supposed to taste like Japan! 🤔 It sounds good, but I guess I expected sushi flavors or something.

  7. 4 stars
I was skeptical at first but this turned out better than I thought. Yum!

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! This dish was a surprise hit in my house too. Can’t believe how easy it was!

Did I miss something? Why so many different seafoods? My dad thinks it’s weird.

Spaghetti took longer to cook than the time sayed. I totally messed it up 😩

5 stars for sure! I’m no chef but this seemed fancy and tasted even better!

I followed the recipe but it turned out a bit bland. Maybe I needed more spices?

    1. User avatar dwain.feest82 says:

You might want to try adding some chili flakes or more soy sauce next time! Spices can really amp up the flavor!

  12. User avatar steven.adams44 says:

I followed it mostly, but I didn’t have oyster sauce so I used extra soy. Flavor was still nice, just not as deep. Not bad though!

Tried this last night and it was surprisingly good—sticky, savory, and not too sweet. The seafood cooks fast so I kept an eye on it like the recipe said. Definitely making again.

    1. User avatar Samwise Gamgee says:

      5 stars
So happy you liked it! The sauce really is the star—sticky and savory without getting overly sweet. And yeah, watching the seafood closely makes a huge difference since it cooks so fast. Can’t wait to hear how your next batch turns out!

  14. User avatar maureen.casper says:

I didn’t have mixed seafood, just tossed in shrimp. Still good, but not sure if that’s cheating.

  15. 5 stars
Tasty AF! Will def make again! A+ recipe!

  16. User avatar rayford.murazik says:

Super delicious! I didn’t have some ingredients, so I just used what I had, still turned out great. Thnx!

  17. User avatar Tricia McMillan says:

Not gonna lie, the instructions feel kinda vague? Like how big is “mixed seafood” cup? And 2-3 minutes for mussels scares me lol. Still ate it though, just nervous the whole time.

  18. 2 stars
Why is there oyster sauce?? I don’t have any and I’m scared to substitute. Is it required or can I just use more soy sauce?

  19. 5 stars
Tried this tonight and it was seriously delicious—love how the soy + oyster sauce combo coats everything. I did add a tiny splash of water to help the sauce cling to the spaghetti, and it worked great. Will make again!

    1. User avatar luetta.huels77 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That soy + oyster sauce combo is so good. I love that it clings to the pasta—also the sesame oil at the end makes it taste restaurant-y.

  20. 5 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about “Japanese-style” spaghetti, but it actually tastes legit. I added a tiny pinch of chili flakes and it made it even better.

    1. 5 stars
I love hearing that! The soy + oyster combo really does give it that savory “Japanese-style” vibe. Chili flakes are such a good tweak too—how much did you add?

  21. User avatar don.bosco69 says:

WOW!! This is the best spaghetti I ever made!! 🦐🍝

    1. User avatar franklyn.predovic says:

      3 stars
Best? Really? I mean, it’s good, but I think it’s just the same as regular spaghetti. 😂

    2. 5 stars
That’s awesome to hear! I love seafood spaghetti. What did you think of the soy sauce with the seafood?

  22. User avatar arnita.quitzon20 says:

    5 stars
Wow—this tastes way more “restaurant” than I expected. The oyster + soy combo is such a nice depth, and the sesame at the end really pulls it together. I used frozen shrimp mix and it still worked great.

  23. User avatar archie.abshire says:

Man, I’m hungry but my sauce split. I used oyster sauce that was old… maybe that’s on me. Otherwise the steps are easy.

  24. User avatar Draugr Scourge says:

    3 stars
I tried it but I don’t like spaghetti with seafood… maybe its just me.

  25. 1 star
Seasfood? 🤮 I prefer my spaghetti with meatballs. But to each their own, I suppose.

  26. User avatar maia.goodwin31 says:

    5 stars
This was surprisingly good—kinda like a Japanese takeout vibe. The oyster sauce + soy combo is the magic. I’ll make it again.

  27. 1 star
My kids hated it. They only eat plain pasta. 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      4 stars
I’m sorry to hear that! Kids can be picky eaters. Maybe try a plain version next time?

  28. User avatar junita.hessel97 says:

    4 stars
Ok so I used spaghetti but next time I’ll try udon—same sauce energy. Sauce tasted legit, though I wish the recipe mentioned salt level.

    1. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

      5 stars
Nice! I’ve made it with spaghetti too, but udon sounds like it’d be perfect with that sauce. I get what you mean on the salt—soy sauce + oyster sauce can vary a lot by brand. Next time I’m probably gonna start with 1 tbsp soy and taste first.

  29. User avatar marlon.gaylord says:

    5 stars
Five stars, because the smell when you fry the garlic is unreal. Also my kids asked for seconds. 👏

  30. 5 stars
This was surprisingly good! The flavors were just right.
