There’s something truly special about homemade jam, and this peach jam is no exception. Made with just a few ingredients, it captures the sweet, sunny flavor of ripe peaches in every jar. Whether you spread it on your morning toast, swirl it into yogurt, or give it as a thoughtful homemade gift, this peach jam brings the taste of summer into your kitchen year-round.
The beauty of this jam lies in its simplicity. Start with fresh, ripe peaches, about four to five medium-sized peaches should do the trick. Peel and chop them into small pieces, discarding the pits. You’ll need around 4 cups of chopped peaches to yield a few jars of jam.
Combine the peaches in a large pot with sugar, lemon juice, and a small amount of pectin. The lemon juice not only adds a bit of brightness but helps the jam set as it cooks. If you’ve never made jam before, don’t worry, the pectin will naturally thicken the mixture into a spreadable consistency as it simmers.
Cook the peach mixture over medium heat, stirring frequently to prevent burning. As the peaches break down and the mixture thickens, you’ll notice the color change from vibrant orange to a rich golden hue. This process usually takes about 30 minutes, depending on the moisture content of your peaches. To test for the jam’s consistency, place a small spoonful on a chilled plate and run your finger through it, if it wrinkles and holds its shape, it’s ready.
Once the jam has thickened, carefully ladle it into sterilized jars while it’s still hot. Seal them tightly, and allow them to cool to room temperature. If you plan to store your jam for an extended period, you can process the jars in a hot water bath for added shelf stability.
This homemade peach jam is sweet, smooth, and packed with the flavor of fresh peaches. It’s perfect for spreading on toast, mixing into desserts, or even using as a glaze for meats. Best of all, it’s a wonderful way to preserve the best of summer for months to come!

Ingredients
- 4 cups peaches peeled, pitted, and mashed
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice freshly squeezed
- 1 packet pectin optional, for thicker jam
Instructions
- In a large pot, combine the mashed peaches, sugar, and lemon juice. Stir well to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring frequently to prevent burning.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer for about 25-30 minutes or until the mixture has thickened to your desired consistency, stirring occasionally.
- If using pectin, stir it in during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
- Remove from heat and carefully pour the hot jam into sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of headspace. Seal the jars with lids.
- Let the jars cool to room temperature before storing them in the refrigerator or processing them in a water bath for longer storage.

This jam is absolutely delicious! I made it with my grandma and it turned out perfect! 5 stars!
Peach jam = love ❤️
I tried making this yesterday and it was too runny for me. Not sure what went wrong, maybe I needed more pectin? Anyway, I give it a 3.
Great recipe! Just used frozen peaches I had at home, still turned out really good! Yum!
your recipe is a bit confusing, I thought peach jam needed peach juice, not just mashed peaches? Also, why does it need lemon juice? I don’t get it. 2 stars.
What? No juice? That sounds wrong! I always thought jams needed liquid. Plus, lemon juice? Sounds weird to me. I’ll stick to my way of making it. 1 star.
I think you’re misunderstanding the recipe a bit. The lemon juice helps to balance the sweetness and preserve the flavor. Peach juice isn’t necessary if you’re using ripe peaches! Just give it a try, I promise it’s worth it!
This jam is AMAZING! I made it yesterday and my family can’t get enough. Sooo sweet and peachy!
I followed the recipe but my jam didn’t set… What did I do wrong? 🤔
Making peach jam is a waste of time. Just buy it from the store, it’s cheaper. Plus, you dont need to deal with all that mess.
But store bought tastes like nothing compared to homemade! Plus, it’s a fun project if you like cooking.
I think making it yourself is better… you know exactly what’s in it. And it’s fresh. But yeah, it can be messy.
good jam but my kids don’t like peaches. they prefer it with strawberries! so i guess it’s not for everyone.
Yum! Just made this with fresh peaches from the farmer’s market. I used agave instead of sugar tho. Very tasty!
I followed the recipe but mine turned out way too runny. What did I do wrong? Should I add more sugar?
This jam is the best! Tastes just like summer in a jar. My family loved it!
Are you sure it’s that good? I made peach jam once and it tasted awful. Maybe I did it wrong?
I’m so glad to hear that! I made it last week, and my kids couldn’t stop eating it too!
I followed the steps exactly and it came out kind of runny. Probably needed the full 30 min? Still tastes great though.
meh. It’s just jam, how good can it be? 2 stars.
Can it be made with other fruits? I only have strawberries and they are ripe! 🍓
Absolutely! You can make jam with strawberries. Just follow the same instructions but replace peaches with strawberries. I’m sure it’ll be delicious! 🍓
I dunno, I’ve always thought jam should be made with the fruit it’s supposed to be! What’s the point of strawberry jam if it’s peach jam? 🤷♂️
The ingredient amounts are simple, which I like. But “bring to a boil” took me way longer than expected—maybe my peaches were extra watery?
Made this last weekend—so good on toast. The lemon really brightens it up. I skipped pectin and still got a nice thickness after simmering a bit longer.
Love this—lemon is such a game changer for peach jam. I also didn’t use pectin and mine thickened up fine after a longer simmer. 👍
Interesting recipe. I followed it but mine was kinda runny even after 30 min. Did I not boil it enough or is pectin really needed?
Can confirm: don’t skip lemon. I tried a batch without it once and it tasted flatter. Also, jam on the stove is messy—watch out.
Yes! Lemon really does make it pop. I skipped it once too and it honestly tasted kind of “sweet water” compared to the real batch. Good call about watching the stove—peach jam splatters like crazy.
I disagree a little—my jam thickened fine without the lemon juice… but maybe I just used extra sugar? Also the “sterilized jars” part always trips me up. Do you have to water-bath them or can you just chill right away?
Yum!! Just made a batch with my kids, got a bit messy but worth it!!
Pretty easy directions, but mine took longer than 30 minutes to thicken. I kept stirring like it says and it turned out great anyway.
Yeah that can happen—peaches vary a lot in water content. As long as it thickened up and you kept stirring, you’re good. Next time you could simmer a bit longer or use the pectin if you want it to set faster.
I followed the recipe and got a jam that’s more like syrup? Maybe my jars weren’t hot enough or my simmer was too gentle. Flavor is nice though.
Too much sugar for my taste. I prefer it more natural without all that sweetness.
I didn’t know that you need pectin! My jam turned out really runny. Next time I’ll follow the recipe!
Good basic recipe, but mine boiled over a couple times because I wasn’t stirring frequently enough. Next time I’ll lower the heat earlier.
I don’t have a pot big enough! Can I use a frying pan? 😂
Haha, a frying pan? That sounds a bit risky, but maybe it could work! Just keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn! 😄
I mean, you could use a frying pan but it won’t hold as much. You might end up with a mess! Just saying. 😅
The pectin step confuses me a bit—“optional, for thicker jam” is vague. I added a packet and it thickened fast, but it also feels slightly too firm. Still edible!
It’s good but like, my peaches were sour so it’s kinda not as sweet as I hoped.
Is pectin really needed? I always just cook my fruit down til it’s thick enough!
Made this last weekend—so good. The lemon really keeps it bright, and it thickened nicely even without pectin. My jars set in about an hour.
That’s awesome—exactly how I like my jam. Love that it still thickened up without pectin, and the lemon boost is everything!
Very straightforward. Sterilized jars, proper headspace, and it kept well in the fridge. I’m going to try water bath next time.
Soooo sweet! I may cut down on sugar next time!
I agree! It’s super sweet! Maybe try using less sugar or a sugar substitute next time?
Is the pectin really necessary? This jam was kind of thin… Not sure I’d make it again.
Instructions are clear but can someone tell me how to sterilize the jars? I’m lost!
Tastes amazing, but wow, it took forever to peel all those peaches!
My pectin packet said mix with sugar first (not sure if it matters). I stirred in at the end like the recipe and it set a bit uneven. Tasty anyway.
I tried making this but the jam didn’t set right. Maybe I added too much sugar? I think it needs more pectin.
You might be right about the sugar! Sometimes too much can mess with the consistency. Pectin is definitely your friend in jam making. Keep trying, you’ll get it right!
This jam tastes like summer! I can’t believe how easy it was to make! 5 stars!
Made this with ripe peaches—so good. The lemon really brightens it. I didn’t even add pectin and it still thickened nicely.
I tried once and it didn’t set for me… maybe my peaches weren’t ripe enough. Do you think the lemon amount matters much?
Omg this sounds perfect—I’ve been trying to use up peaches. Good to know it thickens even without pectin! 🍑
Yummy! But why do you need the lemon juice? Isn’t the sugar enough? 🤷♀️
I love canning stuff, but I always double-check safety. You only say store in the fridge or process in a water bath—do the water bath if you’re keeping it longer! Otherwise, just refrigerate.
