Grilled Greek Shrimp

May 30, 2024

When it comes to quick, healthy meals that pack a punch of flavor, grilled Greek shrimp is hard to beat. This Mediterranean-inspired dish brings together succulent shrimp, vibrant herbs, zesty lemon, and a touch of garlic for a simple yet satisfying recipe that’s ready in minutes.

The key to this dish is the marinade. A blend of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, and parsley infuses the shrimp with classic Greek flavors. Letting the shrimp marinate for even just 15 to 30 minutes gives them an extra layer of brightness and tenderness. If you have time, chilling them in the marinade for an hour will only deepen the flavor.

Grilling adds a smoky char that pairs perfectly with the tangy citrus and herbs. Use skewers for easy flipping, and grill the shrimp over medium-high heat just until they turn pink and slightly crispy on the edges, about 2 to 3 minutes per side.

Serve these grilled shrimp with a side of tzatziki sauce, fresh pita, or a crisp cucumber and tomato salad for a meal that feels like a Greek island getaway. They also make a delicious topping for rice bowls, pasta, or even a light summer salad.

This recipe is incredibly versatile. You can double the batch for entertaining, serve it as an appetizer at your next cookout, or make it part of your weekly meal prep. It’s naturally gluten-free, low in carbs, and full of protein, making it a smart choice for a balanced lifestyle.

Whether you’re cooking outdoors or using a grill pan indoors, grilled Greek shrimp is a go-to recipe that’s simple to make and always impressive on the plate. Fresh, healthy, and full of Mediterranean charm,Grilled Greek shrimp is a quick, healthy dish packed with lemon, garlic, and herbs. Grilled shrimp? More like grilled shrimpy! LOL🤣.

    1. User avatar Zarniwoop says:

      4 stars
Haha, that’s a good one! But these shrimp are actually delicious! Can’t wait to try the recipe! 👍

  2. User avatar reynalda.koss says:

    5 stars
These came out juicy and super flavorful. The lemon + garlic combo is money, and 2-3 minutes per side was spot on for my grill.

  3. User avatar edwardo.konopelski2003 says:

I forgot to buy basil, so I used a spice mix instead. Wasn’t the same tho. 3 stars for me.

    1. 2 stars
But basil is key in Greek dishes! Mixing might not cut it. You know what I mean? I stick to the recipe or it ain’t right. 2 stars for me.

    2. 4 stars
Using a spice mix is a good idea when you’re in a pinch! Sometimes, you gotta improvise. 4 stars seems fair for that.

  4. User avatar johnathan.abshire says:

    4 stars
Tastes really good, but I wish the marinade had something like a pinch of red pepper flakes for a little heat.

  5. User avatar theo.bashirian1985 says:

    3 stars
The flavors are solid, but 2-3 minutes per side feels short on my grill. I had to cook a bit longer to get them opaque.

    1. 4 stars
Yeah I agree—2-3 min/side was a little too fast on my grill too. Mine needed closer to 3-4 minutes per side to get fully opaque. Maybe it depends on shrimp size and how hot your grill actually runs.

    2. User avatar darnell.crooks12 says:

      3 stars
Hmm mine came out perfect at 2-3 minutes. Pink and opaque happens fast when it’s hot enough. Did you preheat long enough and use medium-high (not just “kinda warm”)?

  6. 3 stars
Grill shrimp for 2-3 minutes? That’s not long enough in my opinion. I grilled them longer and they turned out better.

  7. User avatar Magrathean sperm whale says:

    1 star
No offense but I think shrimp is gross. Why would you grill them? I’d rather eat chicken.

  8. User avatar edward.schmidt1998 says:

    4 stars
Easy and fast. I didn’t have dried basil so I used extra oregano, still turned out great. Next time I’ll save the marinade juice for spooning on top.

  9. User avatar priscila.reilly says:

    2 stars
Too much garlic for my taste. Maybe I did it wrong? Not a hit at my house.

    1. User avatar franklyn.baumbach says:

      4 stars
You might have just used too many cloves. Try one next time. It could be better!

  10. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

    2 stars
??? What’s a oregano? Never heard of that. Can I skip?

  11. User avatar kenton.larson2 says:

    5 stars
Shrimp go with everything! Can’t wait to have this again at my cookout!

    1. User avatar Samual Haley says:

      2 stars
I dunno, shrimp can be kinda slimy sometimes. Not my fav, but good luck at your cookout.

    2. User avatar zachery.hintz says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! Shrimp just makes everything delicious. Hope your cookout goes amazing!

  12. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    5 stars
This shrimp recipe is amazing! The flavors are perfect! 💖

  13. 4 stars
Yum, I want to make this again but shrimp kinda expensive where I live.

    1. 4 stars
I totally get the shrimp prices! Maybe you could try it with chicken or tofu instead? Just a thought!

  14. User avatar mitzie.halvorson says:

    4 stars
I followed it exactly and my shrimp still stuck a little to the grill. Maybe I should’ve oil-sprayed the grates? Otherwise great seasoning. Love the lemon wedges at the end.

    1. User avatar zenaida.kris15 says:

      3 stars
Happened to me too 😅 I followed it but my grates weren’t really clean, so it stuck. I think 2–3 min each side might be a bit tight? Or maybe I needed more oil in the marinade—shrimp can be so picky. Still tasted good!

    2. User avatar Michael83 says:

      5 stars
Good point about the grates—when shrimp touches even a slightly sticky surface it’ll grab fast. Next time I’d oil-spray (or brush) the grates right before cooking. Glad the seasoning + lemon wedges worked though!

  15. User avatar spencer.greenfelder says:

    1 star
It takes more than 3 minutes to grill shrimp! Are you sure about that? Mine were still raw. Had to put them back!

  16. User avatar jacob.smith1991 says:

    5 stars
This tastes like something I’d order at a Greek place. The dried basil with thyme is such a nice touch. I used wooden skewers and soaked them first—no burning.

  17. User avatar rob.strosin93 says:

    4 stars
Shrimp on the grill is always risky for me, but this one worked. The instructions are clear and the end result is juicy.

    1. User avatar chanda.rath1 says:

      3 stars
Could be I overdid the garlic or something, but mine tasted a bit too strong. Next time I’m gonna cut the garlic cloves in half. Still decent tho.

    2. User avatar Spider Worker says:

      5 stars
I’m the same—shrimp gets rubbery on me fast. But the “2-3 minutes per side” tip saved it. Juicy is exactly right.

  18. User avatar adolfo.heidenreich38 says:

    5 stars
Made these tonight and they were fantastic—bright lemon flavor, and the oregano/basil combo is perfect with shrimp. Super quick too!

  19. 3 stars
You forgot the aluminum foil trick for the grill! It makes everything cook better and keeps it from falling through.

    1. User avatar elwanda.muller says:

      4 stars
Oh! I always use foil for fish too. Makes sense for shrimp! Gonna try this next time.

    2. 2 stars
What do you mean aluminum foil? I just toss them on the grill! Never had problems.

  20. User avatar catherin.balistreri91 says:

    5 stars
These were surprisingly flavorful for something so simple. The oregano + lemon combo is doing all the work—in a good way. I grilled a little too long the first batch, but the rest came out perfect. Will make again!

    1. User avatar Lunkwill and Fook says:

      5 stars
Agreed—oregano + lemon is a cheat code 😄 Glad you nailed the second batch after the first one ran a bit long.

  21. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    1 star
Ehhh, shrimp is gross. I don’t like seafood that much. But my friend said she liked it.

  22. 5 stars
Cooked this for my family and they loved it! Even my picky eater went back for seconds!

  23. 3 stars
Tried it exactly as written. Flavor was good but I think 2-3 min per side might overcook thin shrimp—mine turned a bit rubbery. Next time I’ll start checking earlier.

  24. User avatar joe_banana says:

    5 stars
This recipe is easy, just toss shrimp and grill! 🌟 5 stars for simplicity!

  25. User avatar annmarie.effertz76 says:

    4 stars
Grilled shrimp? Yummy! I made this and it’s now one of my go-to meals!

  26. User avatar Spider Soldier says:

    4 stars
Easy to follow! My kids even liked it, which was a shocker. Thanks for sharing!

  27. User avatar charline.kovacek32 says:

    5 stars
Super simple—made it with wooden skewers and soaked them like 30 minutes so they didn’t burn. Everyone asked how I got it to taste so garlicky.

  28. User avatar magda.beier1971 says:

    4 stars
Tried it without lemon and was still good. Shrimp are yummy no matter what!

    1. User avatar jason.haley34 says:

      3 stars
Wait, no lemon? Isn’t that kinda the main thing? I’m not sure how that works, but if you say so…

    2. User avatar Shadout Mapes says:

      5 stars
Glad to hear you liked it! Shrimp are versatile, honestly! Lemon makes it zesty but if you liked it without, that’s great too!

  29. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have thyme, so I used Italian seasoning instead. Still good, but would like to try it with the right herbs!

  30. User avatar miranda.satterfield83 says:

    4 stars
I used frozen shrimp instead of fresh and it still turned out great! Thanks for the easy instructions!

  31. User avatar Shadout Mapes says:

    5 stars
This shrimp recipe is absolutely fantastic! The flavors are so vibrant! I made it for my family and everyone loved it!

  32. 3 stars
Wasn’t the best but okayish I guess. Can’t beat grilled chicken tho. 3 stars.

  33. 1 star
Nasty! I thought it would be better. 😕

  34. 2 stars
I found it a bit bland. Maybe needs more seasoning or something? Not my favorite.

  35. User avatar denver.wisozk49 says:

    3 stars
Could be better. The marinade smelled great, but I think my shrimp were slightly overcooked on the second round. Also, the garlic got a little too browned on the skewers.

  36. User avatar jessi.lynch73 says:

    3 stars
Wow this is so easy… but “leave space between each shrimp” is hard when u only have like 5 skewers lol. Taste was decent though. I would maybe add a pinch of chili flakes.

  37. 5 stars
Yum!! Really hit the spot! 🙌

  38. 5 stars
This was amazing! The flavors were perfect. My family loved it, and I’ll definitely make it again!

    1. 5 stars
So glad to hear! This is my go-to recipe now. I’ve even added some chilies for a kick, and it turned out great!

    2. User avatar eryn.medhurst1998 says:

      3 stars
It sounds good, but isn’t shrimp kinda tricky? I had once and it turned out rubbery. Maybe I’ll try it again following your notes. 🤔

  39. User avatar catrice.cummerata1955 says:

    5 stars
This grilled shrimp recipe is AMAZING! So flavorful and easy to make. My family loved it! 5 stars!

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! This recipe is a keeper. I added some chili flakes for a kick! 🌶️

  40. User avatar Sir Fin Waves says:

    3 stars
Not bad but I wish it had more salt. Also, I didn’t have skewers so I grilled in a basket—still worked.

  41. User avatar moises.hill88 says:

    1 star
Lemon wedges? Who eats that? Just give me the shrimp!

  42. User avatar adelia.auer says:

    2 stars
I don’t know, it seems too simple. I’m skeptical about how much flavor the shrimp will have.

    1. User avatar xiomara.boyer says:

      5 stars
I was skeptical too, but it turned out amazing! The garlic and lemon really enhance the shrimp. Give it a try!

    2. User avatar joycelyn.cremin47 says:

      4 stars
Simple doesn’t mean bland! Sometimes the best meals are the easiest. Trust me, this recipe is full of flavor.

  43. User avatar suzanne.hill19 says:

    3 stars
This recipe was too salty for my taste. I’d recommend cutting back on the salt a little.

  44. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    4 stars
Tasty but I’d cut the garlic a tiny bit next time—mine felt a bit punchy. Also 10 minutes marinating wasn’t really enough for me; I let them sit closer to 30 and they grilled juicier.

  45. User avatar maurice.roberts2019 says:

    5 stars
Yum! So fresh and tasty! I love Greek flavors. Wish I could give this more than 5 stars.

    1. 3 stars
I don’t know, sounds good but shrimp can be tricky. What if they’re overcooked?

    2. 5 stars
Absolutely! Greek flavors are the best. This shrimp dish is a real winner! 🍤

  46. User avatar rudolph.tillman17 says:

    4 stars
Not bad! I marinated closer to 20 minutes and they tasted fresher. Next time I might add a pinch of red pepper flakes for some heat.

  47. User avatar erinn.hyatt says:

    4 stars
Simple and quick. Perfect for a weeknight dinner. I just use the oven instead of grill.

  48. User avatar shin.christiansen29 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about the thyme since I usually use parsley. But it turned out great! Who knew?

  49. User avatar emilio.little1985 says:

    2 stars
Shrimp? I thought this was chicken. LOL. Still wanne try it tho.

  50. User avatar robert.christiansen65 says:

Not sure why people like this so much. It’s just shrimp with oil and lemon… my dog even stole one and didn’t even care for the rest.

  51. User avatar Jessica Atreides says:

    5 stars
Absolutely delicious! The flavors were so vibrant. I grilled these for my family and they loved it.

  52. User avatar marica.roob92 says:

    3 stars
Eh, it was OK but a bit too lemony for my taste… maybe cut down the juice next time?

  53. User avatar curt.metz63 says:

    5 stars
5 stars just for how quick it is. I don’t even own a fancy grill—used grill pan—still great. My family ate all of it.

    1. User avatar edmond.bradtke2022 says:

      5 stars
5 stars from me too—seriously fast. I also used a grill pan and it still came out juicy. My husband and I demolished it before I could even plate it 😂

    2. 4 stars
I tried this but my shrimp got a little overcooked—maybe I grilled too long. Next time I’ll do like 1.5–2 minutes per side. Still tasted good though, and the lemon/oregano combo is nice.

  54. User avatar Mrs. Micheline Heaney says:

    2 stars
I can’t taste the thyme at all… did I do something wrong? 2 stars because it was kinda boring.

    1. User avatar daniel.rempel75 says:

      2 stars
You sure you used the right kind of thyme? Fresh would taste way better. 2 stars? Come on!

    2. User avatar lyda.anderson45 says:

      4 stars
Maybe you just need more thyme! It can be kinda subtle, but I love it!

  55. User avatar hoyt.nader says:

    2 stars
Grill shrimp? I dunno… sounds like more work than it’s worth. Just boil em? 🤷‍♂️

  56. User avatar janeth.terry80 says:

    3 stars
Shrimp was overcooked on the grill, but the marinade was good. Next time I’ll keep an eye on them.

    1. User avatar Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings says:

      4 stars
Glad to hear the marinade was good! Just remember, shrimp cook super fast. Maybe try a timer next time?

  57. 5 stars
Yum! I never tried grilled shrimp before, but this recipe changed my mind! So good!

  58. User avatar audrie.trantow30 says:

    5 stars
The marinade was lit! I added some chili flakes for a kick. Will make again!

Grilled shrimp is overrated… just boil them instead.

    1. User avatar yoko.okuneva says:

      4 stars
Boiling might be easier, but grilled shrimp adds a nice flavor! Try it sometime!

  61. User avatar demetrius.breitenberg21 says:

Just made these, and I can’t stop eating them! My new favorite dish! 😍

  62. User avatar bobbie.wiza1982 says:

    5 stars
Easy recipe to follow, and I love that it’s healthy! My kids even ate the shrimp. Thanks for sharing!

  63. 4 stars
The marinade is the whole story here. I used fresh thyme and it smelled amazing. Would recommend letting shrimp sit at least 10 min.

    1. User avatar william.kuphal says:

      3 stars
I marinated mine only like 5 minutes and they were… okay? Next time I’ll wait longer. Also, I used fresh garlic once and it burned a little on the grill so maybe keep it medium heat.

    2. User avatar kera.lang73 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—the marinade really does make these pop. I did 15 min and the lemon/garlic smell was unreal. Great call on thyme!

  64. User avatar toccara.braun says:

Shrimp? Yuck! I can’t believe people eat those bugs. Not for me.

  65. User avatar robyn.hintz30 says:

Honestly, I didn’t love it. The dried herbs were a bit overpowering and I couldn’t taste much lemon beyond the first bite.

  66. User avatar belle.ruecker90 says:

    5 stars
So good! 🍤🍋 Will make again for sure!

  67. User avatar Don Heathcote says:

    1. User avatar antone.welch8 says:

I’m so glad to hear that! I tried it too, and everybody loved it. Perfect for summer BBQs!

  68. User avatar geralyn.herzog says:

1 lb shrimp is never enough in my house 😅 But seriously, good cook time. 2-3 minutes per side is accurate—mine turned pink fast. The marinade smelled amazing too.

  69. User avatar Leopoldo Muller says:

    3 stars
Nice recipe, but why do you have to marinate them? Shrimp are good without it.

  70. User avatar Orange Dartwing says:

    4 stars
Very good! But can I use frozen shrimp instead of fresh? That’s all I have.

  71. User avatar lawanna.huels2020 says:

    2 stars
Too much garlic. Made me smell bad all day! 😅

  72. User avatar miguel.bergnaum says:

Easy and quick! I never grilled shrimp before, but this turned out great! family loved it! 👍

  73. User avatar santana.brakus1974 says:

    3 stars
Mine stuck to the grill a bit even with oil. I think I needed to oil the grates more. Flavor was decent though.

  74. User avatar otha.schaefer66 says:

    5 stars
This is an amazing recipe! I made it for my family and they loved it. Will definitely make again!

  75. User avatar janelle.fisher66 says:

    4 stars
I only marinated them like 5 minutes and they still came out decent. Not bad for a weeknight meal.

    1. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

      5 stars
Honestly I’m impressed—5 minutes is super short. I usually do 10–15, so “decent” means the garlic/lemon/oregano combo must be doing its job. Weeknight win for sure!

    2. User avatar Gag Halfrunt says:

      3 stars
Wait, only 5 min? I tried something like this and the shrimp tasted kinda… bland? Maybe my garlic was too strong or I cooked too long. But if it works for you I’ll give it another shot—medium-high doesn’t sound hot enough though.

  76. User avatar dean.padberg99 says:

    3 stars
Easy recipe but I messed up the skewers—my shrimp spun around and didn’t cook evenly. Still ate it though lol.

  77. User avatar jan.shanahan71 says:

    2 stars
I followed it, but I think I measured wrong—ended up too salty. Also I forgot to devein (whoops), so texture was meh. Lesson learned: prep matters!

    1. User avatar Dremora Lord says:

      2 stars
Devein is overrated lol—just scrape it off if you can 😅. But yeah too salty usually means the “salt to taste” part got you. I think your oregano/basil might’ve been strong too? Still, good lesson learned.

    2. User avatar alec.nolan33 says:

      4 stars
Oof, I’ve totally been there. With shrimp, a “little” extra salt can feel like a lot once it hits the grill. Next time try salting lightly, then taste the marinade—also letting it marinate 10 min is enough, no need to go longer.

  78. User avatar emanuel.walter2025 says:

    3 stars
I thought the marinade was a bit too strong for my taste. Maybe less garlic next time? Just my opinion.

    1. 3 stars
Less garlic? Nah, I think it’s perfect! Garlic’s healthy and so flavorful! But I guess everyone has their taste.

    2. 4 stars
I totally get what you mean! The garlic can be strong for some. I usually use just one clove and it still tastes amazing!

  79. User avatar Tiffany Smitham Jr. says:

    4 stars
Not bad, but I’m skeptical about “dried basil” in particular. It felt a little flat until I added extra lemon zest. Still, easy recipe for a weeknight.

  80. User avatar Willie Waite says:

    4 stars
I ain’t never cooked shrimp before, but I gave it a go and they turned out good. Going to try again!

  81. User avatar jospeh.raynor68 says:

Greek vibes achieved ✅ Garlic lemon shrimp is my weakness. I served it with rice and it was gone instantly.

    1. User avatar haley.hyatt1958 says:

      5 stars
Mmm Greek vibes is right 😄 I did something similar with rice once and it disappeared fast too. The garlic + lemon combo really hits!

  82. User avatar britta.goldner37 says:

    2 stars
Ok but the garlic burned on my grill? Maybe my heat was too high. I’d recommend keeping the grill a little lower or giving the shrimp a quick brush of oil after threading.

    1. 5 stars
Yeah, burned garlic is super common if the grill runs too hot. Medium-high sounds right, but I’d say keep an eye on it and maybe add the garlic later in the process or use less minced garlic so it doesn’t char so fast.

  83. 5 stars
Made this last night—super fast and the lemon/oregano combo is spot on. I marinated closer to 30 minutes and they came out juicy. Will grill again!

  84. User avatar alisia.hansen says:

    2 stars
Meh, I dunno. Shrimp is kinda weird. Not my favorite… maybe I did something wrong? 🤷‍♂️

  85. 3 stars
Garlic burned on the grill for me—probably because the minced garlic was too much direct heat. Maybe I should chop less fine or reduce cooking time.

  86. 5 stars
So good—super flavorful and the lemon + oregano combo really pops. I marinated closer to 30 minutes and it stayed juicy on the grill.

  87. User avatar angelita.bergstrom2017 says:

    2 stars
I followed it exactly but mine was kinda bland… maybe I didn’t use enough salt? also I accidentally had no lemons so I used lime and it was weird. 😅

  88. User avatar coy.kling93 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I felt like the herbs were kinda overpowering? Like oregano showed up and didn’t leave. Next time I might use half or fresher basil/thyme instead of dried.

  89. User avatar theodore.denesik says:

    3 stars
I followed everything and the shrimp got a little rubbery. Maybe my grill was too hot—next time I’ll watch the timing closer.
