Dates Pecan Tea Bread

February 28, 2025

Dates pecan tea bread is a warm, inviting loaf that’s perfect for pairing with a cup of tea or coffee. With its rich, naturally sweet flavor from dates and the satisfying crunch of toasted pecans, this bread feels both comforting and elegant. Whether served at breakfast, as an afternoon snack, or even as a light dessert, it’s a wholesome treat that delivers both flavor and texture in every bite.

What makes this tea bread so delightful is the way the ingredients work together. The dates, often soaked in hot water or brewed tea to soften, create a moist texture and caramel-like sweetness. Pecans, on the other hand, add a toasty, buttery crunch that contrasts beautifully with the soft crumb of the bread. A touch of brown sugar and a hint of vanilla or cinnamon can enhance the flavor, giving the loaf a gently spiced, earthy undertone.

The batter for dates pecan tea bread is usually quick to prepare, made with pantry staples like flour, baking soda, eggs, and oil or butter. Once baked, the loaf develops a golden crust while staying tender and moist inside. It slices easily, holds its shape, and stores well for several days — in fact, the flavor deepens after a day or two, making it even better with time.

This bread is especially enjoyable during the cooler months when its warm, nutty aroma fills the kitchen as it bakes. It also makes a thoughtful homemade gift, wrapped in parchment and twine. Serve it as-is or with a smear of butter or cream cheese for a touch of richness. Some variations include chopped apples, orange zest, or a drizzle of glaze on top, but even the simplest version is deeply satisfying.

Dates pecan tea bread is a lovely nod to traditional baking — a sweet, nutty loaf that brings comfort and charm to any table.

I followed the recipe exactly but my bread came out super dense. What did I do wrong? 🤔

Never tried dates in bread before. Sounds weird but I’m curious. Anyone else ever made this?

    1. User avatar lacy.nolan1990 says:

I’ve made this before and it was unexpectedly delicious! The dates add a nice sweetness. You should definitely try it!

  4. 3 stars
Yummy bread but why boiling watter? Can’t we use cold? 😕

    1. User avatar virgilio.konopelski1999 says:

      2 stars
Why would you boil the water? Seems silly. I just use cold water for everything hehe.

    2. User avatar Slaughterfish says:

      5 stars
Boiling water helps to soften the dates, making them easier to mix in. Cold water wouldn’t do that. Trust me, it’s necessary! 😊

  5. User avatar karen.friesen says:

    3 stars
I thought it was too sweet for my taste. I mean, 1 cup of sugar? That’s a lot. I’ll try less sugar next time. 3 stars.

  6. User avatar dorsey.marks says:

    5 stars
I can’t believe how easy this was! Will make again for sure.

  7. User avatar kristi.tromp60 says:

This was a disaster. I burnt it because I didn’t check the oven time. Can you please make the instructions clearer?

  8. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    4 stars
I accidentally used salted butter—oops—but it still worked. Next time I’ll stick to unsalted and maybe toast the pecans first for extra flavor.

  9. User avatar osvaldo.toy59 says:

    3 stars
Not my favorite. The flavor was kinda strange, but the texture is nice.

  10. User avatar shelley.hansen3 says:

Eh… dates in bread weird me out. But my roommate ate it all.

Dates? Really? I thought it was a cake! Anyway, it tastes okay.

    1. User avatar byron.goyette11 says:

      2 stars
I dunno, I’m not really into dates. They taste funny to me. I would like it better with chocolate instead.

    2. User avatar nicol.hegmann78 says:

      5 stars
I think it’s super tasty! Dates add a unique flavor that makes it special. Maybe try it warm, it’s the best!

  12. User avatar ben.emmerich says:

I forgot to add the nuts and it still turned out okay. But I can’t imagine how good it would be with them!

  13. 5 stars
Delicious! This bread is so moist and flavorful. Everyone loved it at the tea party!

  14. User avatar ariel.sawayn97 says:

    2 stars
The texture is kinda heavy? Like a quick bread that’s more dense than fluffy. Still edible, just not what I was craving.

  15. 2 stars
I followed the recipe exactly and mine came out really dry. What did I do wrong?

  16. User avatar adriene.oreilly2018 says:

Is this gluten-free? Asking for my friend who’s got some allergy.

  17. User avatar Leto II Atreides says:

    4 stars
Good taste, but mine took closer to 70-75 minutes. Also I think I chopped the pecans a bit too fine so they disappeared—still delicious though.

    1. 4 stars
Mine came out closer to 60 mins 😅 maybe my oven runs hot. I chopped pecans kinda small too and honestly I liked it that way—more like an even nutty thing. Did you let the date mix fully cool before mixing? That might affect bake time.

    2. User avatar Miss Leatha Hirthe says:

      5 stars
Thanks for the timing note! I usually go by toothpick too, but 70–75 minutes makes sense depending on the loaf pan. And yeah, chopping the pecans too fine can make them sort of “melt in,” but at least the flavor stays great.

  18. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    5 stars
Fantastic bread! Just baked it today and the smell is divine!

    1. User avatar numbers.gutmann7 says:

  19. User avatar lucile.zemlak1955 says:

I don’t get why the dates need to be boiled. Is that really necessary? It seemed weird to me. The bread turned out okay, but I wonder if it would be better without that step.

  20. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    5 stars
This turned out super moist and the date flavor really comes through. I added a pinch of salt just because, and it felt balanced. Definitely making it again for brunch!

    1. 5 stars
Love hearing that! The dates really do shine—adding salt makes total sense for balance. Brunch loaf sounds perfect.

  21. User avatar kecia.herman says:

    5 stars
Delish!!! Wish I could show you a pic of mine, it looks so good.

    1. 5 stars
That sounds amazing! Dates and pecans are a perfect combo. I need to try this recipe!

  25. User avatar andy.kessler91 says:

    3 stars
Is it necessary to soak the dates? Doesn’t seem like it would matter much.

    1. 2 stars
I dunno, I never soaked mine and it turned out fine. Just mash ’em up!

    2. User avatar shalanda.dicki says:

      5 stars
Soaking the dates helps to soften them and makes them easier to mix into the batter. It really does matter for the texture of the bread!

  26. User avatar Tricia McMillan says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about dates in bread, but wow, this is surprisingly good! Just need to watch the baking time.

  27. User avatar andre.brakus66 says:

OMG this is the best bread EVER!! I love dates and pecans. Will make it again for sure! 🥳

  28. 4 stars
Delicious! I also added some chocolate chips, so good!

  29. User avatar matt.tremblay0 says:

    4 stars
I thought dates were for old people, but this is surprisingly good. Who knew? LOL!

  30. User avatar michale.abshire12 says:

    2 stars
1 hour seems too long? I left it for 70 minutes and it got a little dry at the edges. Still delicious with butter, just watch it.

  31. 3 stars
Dates in bread? Really? I’m not sure about that… Sounds strange but my friend said it was good, so I might give it a shot.

    1. 5 stars
I thought the same thing at first! But honestly, the sweetness of the dates really compliments the pecans. You should definitely try it!

    2. User avatar miriam.kozey says:

      3 stars
Dates in bread? Sounds weird. I mean, isn’t that more of a dessert thing? But hey, if your friend liked it, maybe it’s worth a try.

  32. User avatar keith.schmitt73 says:

    5 stars
This is my new go-to loaf. I added a pinch of cinnamon and it’s even better. Thanks for a straight-forward recipe!

    1. User avatar Falmer Spellsword says:

      3 stars
Straight-forward, huh? I tried a similar loaf once and it never fully cooked in the middle. Did you bake closer to 60 min or more like 75?

    2. User avatar roseann.mosciski says:

      5 stars
Love hearing this! A pinch of cinnamon sounds like the perfect cozy boost with the dates and pecans. 😊

  33. User avatar enrique.littel says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but it’s kind of dense for me. Maybe I overmixed the flour? The sweetness is also pretty strong—would cut the sugar next time.

    1. User avatar damian.prosacco1983 says:

      4 stars
I totally get the “dense” vibe—date breads can get heavy. I’d bet on overmixing too. I usually mix the flour just until no dry spots, then stop. Also, pecans can make it feel thicker.

    2. 4 stars
Dense is usually the dates + sugar, yeah. I’d cut back the sugar a bit and maybe add a splash of milk? Mine turned out pretty sweet the first time too, so I now do less sugar and it’s better. Could also be you baked a few minutes too long—too dry can feel dense.

  34. User avatar isis.mraz34 says:

    5 stars
Dates + pecans is an undefeated combo. Vanilla + that brown sugar-ish vibe from the dates? Delicious. Will definitely make again.

    1. User avatar ming.conroy says:

      3 stars
Sounds good, but I’m confused—do you use granulated sugar or brown sugar? Either way I guess I’d try it. Also baking soda + boiling water is gonna make the dates look kinda wild lol.

    2. 5 stars
Yes!! Dates bring this cozy sweetness and the pecans give it that perfect crunch. Vanilla makes it taste super bakery-style. 😋

  35. 5 stars
Amazin! just like my grandma used to make. 😍

  36. User avatar eduardo.sipes says:

    4 stars
I had to substitute walnuts for pecans since I was out. Still very good! Would recommend.

  37. User avatar phoebe.pfeffer2011 says:

    3 stars
The recipe says 1 cu of dates but that seems a lot? Mine came out a bit too sweet.

    1. User avatar rudy.hirthe76 says:

      5 stars
1 cup is fine, I use a whole bunch of dates all the time! It taste great, just balance it out with less sugar.

    2. User avatar henry.quigley says:

      4 stars
I think it’s just how dates are! They can be really sweet. Maybe reduce the sugar next time?

  38. 5 stars
I’m not much of a baker but this was easy and turned out great! Thanks!

    1. User avatar Frost Troll says:

      5 stars
So glad to hear it turned out great for you! Baking can be intimidating, but this recipe is super forgiving. Enjoy your tea bread!

  39. User avatar Demon King Piccolo says:

    5 stars
This bread is amazing! The dates make it so sweet and moist. Definitely a 5-star recipe!

  40. User avatar steven.waelchi1998 says:

    2 stars
I made this and it stuck to my pan even though I greased it. Also, the bottom got a little too dark. Could be my loaf pan color, but heads up!

  41. User avatar Barry Manilow says:

    5 stars
Yum! Loved every bite! This is gonna be my go-to bread now. Thanks for sharing! 😀

    1. User avatar edmund.tremblay76 says:

      5 stars
So glad you liked it! 🍞 It’s super easy to make too! Just a few ingredients and you have a delicious loaf!

  42. User avatar lakiesha.fritsch says:

    4 stars
Not bad at all! I used dark brown sugar instead of granulated and it came out a little deeper in flavor. Mine took closer to 1 hr 10 min to get a clean toothpick, so I’d watch the time.

    1. User avatar Random Dent says:

      5 stars
Great to know about the dark brown sugar! I always end up using what’s on hand, so that’s helpful. And yeah, “clean toothpick” can be a moving target—thanks for the timing heads-up.

  43. User avatar adriane.rice says:

    3 stars
The batter was kind of thick after mixing the flour (and I know it says just blended). Still baked up fine, but I wish it had been a bit lighter.

  44. User avatar elton.hermann80 says:

    2 stars
Okay but where do you even get pitted dates? The grocery store near me only has like the whole ones, lol.

  45. User avatar Lunkwill and Fook says:

    3 stars
Not bad! I think I might’ve overbaked slightly because the outside got a little too dark. Flavor is still nice though—will try lowering the temp next time.

    1. User avatar wesley.ruecker59 says:

      5 stars
Good to hear the flavor is still nice! Yeah, with quick breads like this, 5–10 minutes can make a big difference—next time you can drop the temp a bit or start checking around 50 minutes. Also, if your loaf pan runs dark, that can push it to overbrown.

  46. User avatar mathWizard says:

    3 stars
Next time I’ll use less sugar—sweetness hits hard. Also, my loaf stuck a bit even though I greased the pan. Flavor is great, texture just needs tweaking.

  47. User avatar julieann.walsh1971 says:

    2 stars
Not a fan. The flavor was just weird. Don’t understand why everyone likes this. Pecans should be, like, peanuts!

    1. User avatar fausto.weimann says:

      4 stars
I love pecans! They add a nice crunch, unlike peanuts which are just crunchy but not as flavorful! Maybe you just prefer different flavors? 🤷‍♂️

  48. User avatar claud.spencer11 says:

    4 stars
I used chopped walnuts instead of pecans. Worked surprisingly well, but the date flavor is stronger than I expected—kinda like dessert bread. In a good way.

    1. User avatar mickey.feil says:

      4 stars
Interesting—walnuts instead of pecans is a bold move. The date flavor being stronger makes sense though; I feel like it overwhelms sometimes. Still glad it came out good for you.

    2. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      5 stars
Ooh that sounds really tasty! I love when swaps like walnuts work—nice win. And yeah, dates can be pretty punchy.

  49. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

    2 stars
I don’t even know what a pecan is! Can I use walnuts instead? Also, the baking time seemed off for me. It took 1 hour 30 mins instead.

  50. User avatar gale.kuphal35 says:

    4 stars
Baking is just like science! I thought this would be a flop but it turned out perfect!😊

  51. User avatar Uh Shenlong says:

    1 star
I don’t like pecans that much. Can I replace them with something else? That’s dumb, right?

    1. User avatar Treebeard says:

      5 stars
You can definitely replace pecans! Walnuts or almonds could work just as well. Don’t stress, it’s your bread!

  52. User avatar jeri.hilpert says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but mine came out a little dense. I’m not sure if I overmixed the flour or if my loaf pan is deeper than the recipe assumes. Flavor is still good though—warm spice vibes without any spice.

    1. User avatar florentina.prosacco says:

      4 stars
Sorry it turned out dense! I’d bet it’s either overmixing the flour or using too deep a pan. When you add the flour, “just blended” really means stop quickly—overmixing can make quick breads heavy. Also, are you measuring flour by spooning into the cup vs scooping? That can add extra flour and make it dense.

    2. User avatar jettie.wilkinson89 says:

      3 stars
Mine was kinda dense too at first. I think my loaf pan is smaller/deeper, so the bake time felt longer and the center didn’t seem as light. Next time I’ll spread the batter thinner or maybe add 5–10 min to the bake depending on toothpick. Still tastes good though!

  53. 3 stars
Not bad, but mine came out a little dense. I think I over-mixed the flour. Still tasty with tea, though.

  54. 5 stars
This tea bread is absolutely delicious! The dates make it so moist, and the pecans add a great crunch. Definitely a keeper!

  55. User avatar Rosa Sisters says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about using dates, but wow! It turned out great. The pecans add a nice crunch too. 4 stars!

Dates are for old people, lol. I prefer chocolate chips. Not for me.

    1. User avatar romelia.heathcote says:

Chocolate chips are great! But you might be missing out on a yummy treat. Give it a try once!

  57. User avatar Royal Johnston says:

So easy to make! I used walnuts instead of pecans since that’s what I had. Still yummy! 👍

    1. User avatar gerry.collier68 says:

      5 stars
I’ve always used walnuts too! They give it a nice twist. Glad you enjoyed it! 😊

  58. 5 stars
This turned out so moist! The date flavor is sweet but not overpowering, and the pecans give it a nice crunch. I followed the bake time and it came out perfectly.

    1. User avatar alfonso.smith says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I love when a loaf actually stays moist instead of drying out. The dates + pecans combo sounds perfect—sweet but still balanced. Glad the timing worked for you!

  59. User avatar Future Trunks says:

    2 stars
Meh, it was alright. The dates made it too sweet for my taste. Next time I will reduce the sugar.

  60. User avatar moshe.blanda says:

    5 stars
Five stars. Dates are basically magic. 😄

    1. User avatar veola.zemlak54 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—dates really do bring this sweet, almost caramel vibe. 😄

  61. User avatar leandro.green1969 says:

    3 stars
So, I tried this recipe and it turned out too sweet for me. I think it could use less sugar. Maybe sub with honey?

    1. User avatar Storm Atronach says:

      4 stars
I totally get that! The sweetness can be a bit overwhelming. I’ve used honey before and it worked well for me. Give it a shot!

  62. User avatar dixie.treutel says:

    5 stars
Made it for brunch and everyone asked for the recipe. The tea-bread vibe is real—sweet but not cloying, and the aroma while baking is amazing.

    1. 5 stars
Love hearing this! “Sweet but not cloying” is exactly what I was aiming for—thanks for making my day 😊

  63. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about the baking soda with boiling water, but it worked! The batter smelled amazing and the loaf slices cleanly.

    1. User avatar Super Saiyan 2 Goku says:

      5 stars
Okay but that boiling water + baking soda trick actually makes sense—dates get all tender. I’m glad it worked for you! What did you think about the sweetness with 1 cup sugar?

  64. 4 stars
Didn’t have pecans so used peanuts. Tasted good but different. Still, I like it!

    1. User avatar ashlyn.witting2013 says:

      4 stars
Using peanuts sounds interesting! Glad you enjoyed it. Sometimes experimenting leads to great results!

  65. User avatar kent.langosh67 says:

    2 stars
My bread burned on the outside but was raw inside. I followed the recipe exactly! Maybe my oven is too hot? 2 stars.

  66. 5 stars
Baked it for the first time and it went great! Thanks for sharing the recipe. Yum!

  67. 3 stars
Can’t say it failed, but I didn’t love it. Maybe my dates were very dry? The loaf came out less tender than I expected.

    1. User avatar maximina.moen says:

      4 stars
Sorry it didn’t turn out as tender as you wanted! Dry dates can definitely make it feel tougher—next time maybe soak the dates a bit longer in the boiling water (until they’re really plump), and don’t overbake (toothpick “clean” can sometimes mean a bit too far).

    2. User avatar hershel.dibbert1977 says:

      3 stars
My first loaf was kinda chewy too. I think the flour got mixed a little too much—next time I’m gonna stir just till it comes together. Also, if your oven runs hot, 1 hour might be too long.

  68. User avatar Samwise Gamgee says:

    3 stars
Tea bread? Is that a thing? Sounds fancy! I might try it!

    1. User avatar alaina.willms6 says:

      2 stars
Sounds fancy, but what’s tea got to do with bread? Is it a drink or eat?

    2. User avatar jamaal.gislason25 says:

      5 stars
Tea bread is definitely a thing! It’s surprisingly good, you’ll love it!

  69. 4 stars
The instructions are clear, but 1 hour seems long for my oven. I checked at 45 minutes and it was already getting too dark—still cooked through, just make sure you watch the browning.

  70. User avatar Gandalf the Grey says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about the boiling water + baking soda step, but wow—those dates softened perfectly. Texture is moist, not gummy. Only change: I used slightly less sugar next time.
