Creamy Spinach and Tomato Tortellini

November 4, 2024

Creamy Spinach and Tomato Tortellini is a rich, comforting dish that combines the perfect balance of creamy sauce, tender pasta, and fresh vegetables. This dish is quick to prepare and ideal for a cozy weeknight dinner or a special meal for family and friends. The creamy sauce envelops each bite of the cheese-filled tortellini, making it a flavorful and satisfying choice.

The beauty of this dish lies in its simplicity. The tortellini, which is often filled with cheese, spinach, or even meat, cooks quickly in a pot of boiling water, making it the perfect base for this creamy meal. While the tortellini cooks, the sauce is made by combining heavy cream, butter, and garlic, which are then simmered until thickened and rich. A generous amount of parmesan cheese is added to the sauce, giving it a silky, velvety texture and a sharp, savory flavor.

To balance the richness of the sauce, fresh spinach is added, which wilts slightly and adds both color and nutrients. The spinach offers a refreshing contrast to the creamy base and gives the dish an earthy undertone. Diced or halved cherry tomatoes bring a burst of freshness and sweetness, cutting through the creaminess with a touch of acidity. This combination of creamy, savory, and fresh elements makes every bite satisfying and delicious.

The dish is also highly customizable to suit your taste. If you’re looking to add extra flavor, you can toss in a pinch of red pepper flakes for some heat or stir in some fresh herbs like basil or oregano for an added layer of fragrance. For those looking for more protein, grilled chicken, sausage, or shrimp would be great additions.

Creamy Spinach and Tomato Tortellini is a one-pot meal that requires minimal preparation. It’s easy to make, packed with flavor, and perfect for those busy nights when you crave something rich, comforting, and full of wholesome ingredients.

Is it even possible to use tomato sauce instead of cream? Looks too heavy.

    1. User avatar hermina.willms84 says:

I think you could use tomato sauce, but it won’t be the same creamy texture. Might be worth a try if you like tomatoes more!

  2. User avatar alaina.wehner21 says:

Not bad! I used frozen spinach and it was fine, though I had to cook longer to get the moisture out. Garlic smelled amazing. Would make again for sure.

Just made this! It was super easy and quick! A perfect meal after work.

  4. User avatar eladia.brekke2023 says:

Pretty good, but I think it needed more garlic than 2 cloves. Also, the sauce got a little thick after simmering—next time I’ll add a splash of pasta water.

I love tortellini but I’m not fully convinced by the “to taste” seasoning part. How much is actually “to taste” when you’re cooking for real people, lol? Still tasted good though.

    1. User avatar bryant.lind says:

      5 stars
Totally get you 😂 “To taste” is annoying—usually I start with 1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp pepper, then adjust. Parmesan/cheese can be salty too, so go easy at first.

Is spinach even healthy? I dunno, but I tried it and liked it. Gimme more cheese tho. 4 stars.

    1. 5 stars
Spinach is super healthy! It’s packed with iron and vitamins. But yeah, cheese makes everything better! 🧀

Too much garlic for my taste, but the sauce was creamy.

Perfect dish for dinner! Quick and easy. Will make again! 🤗

I forgot to add the garlic and didn’t have heavy cream. Used milk instead, still turned out okay! 3 stars.

Great job improvising! Milk works in a pinch. 🤗

    2. User avatar kelsey.hayes says:

But garlic is super important for flavor… How can you forget that?!

  12. User avatar lorie.rogahn1956 says:

Can you use frozen spinach? I always have that in my freezer.

    1. User avatar rosendo.ratke23 says:

      2 stars
I don’t think it will be as good. Fresh spinach is just better, ya know? Frozen might make it watery.

    2. 5 stars
Absolutely! Frozen spinach works just as well. Just make sure to thaw and drain it before adding it in.

  13. 4 stars
Yum! I added chicken to mine and it turned out amazing!

  14. User avatar franklin.moore30 says:

    4 stars
Easy peasy! I added some mushrooms and it turned out great!

Sounds yummy! I love adding mushrooms too! Great idea!

  15. User avatar rafael.terry86 says:

Tortellini came out perfect! But I added some chicken for extra protein. 10/10 would make again.

  16. User avatar deane.dibbert57 says:

Not the best recipe. I think it needed more seasoning. Kinda bland. ;(

    1. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

      3 stars
Bland? I thought it was pretty good. But like, maybe you just need to spice it up! ✨

    2. User avatar larry.wiegand5 says:

      4 stars
I totally agree! I added some extra herbs and it made a huge difference. Maybe try that next time!

  17. 5 stars
YUM! I’m making this again for dinner tonight. So good!

    1. 3 stars
Looks good but is it really that easy? My pastas always turn out mushy…

    2. User avatar wilbur.beahan says:

      5 stars
I made this last week and it was amazing! Can’t wait for leftovers tonight! 🍽️

  18. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

    2 stars
This is basically just pasta and sauce, what’s so special about it?

    1. User avatar royce.emard21 says:

      5 stars
It’s more than just pasta and sauce! The creamy texture and fresh spinach makes it really good. Plus, cheese tortellini is the best! Definitely worth trying.

    2. 3 stars
I dunno, it sounds kinda basic. Like, can’t you make this with any pasta? But maybe the heavy cream does add a twist? 🤷‍♂️

  19. 3 stars
Pretty good but maybe swap out the cherry tomatoes with something else? They kinda mushy.

    1. User avatar melvin.wolf21 says:

      4 stars
I agree, those cherry tomatoes are too squishy for my taste too. Maybe try bell peppers instead? That would add a nice crunch!

    2. User avatar molly.keeling1977 says:

      3 stars
Why swap? Just don’t overcook them! They taste fine, but okay, do what you want!

  20. User avatar dionna.schmidt says:

    3 stars
I made it but used frozen spinach instead of fresh. It didn’t turn out as good. Might stick to fresh next time.

    1. User avatar cori.wiegand10 says:

      3 stars
I used frozen too and it worked fine for me. Maybe just thaw it out better next time?

    2. 4 stars
Yeah, fresh spinach for sure! Frozen just doesn’t have the same texture. Glad you tried it though!

  21. User avatar quinn.schultz says:

    3 stars
I don’t know, it felt a little bland. Maybe more seasoning? 😕

  22. User avatar jeffery.collier says:

This is too complicated for me. I don’t know about all these instructions! I just want easy meals.

    1. User avatar jay.lebsack says:

      3 stars
Come on, it’s really not that complicated!! Just follow the steps. You can totally do it!

    2. 4 stars
I totally get it! Some recipes are way too much work for just dinner. Maybe try something simpler like a salad or a sandwich?

  23. 5 stars
Wow. Five stars. My whole family went back for seconds and my picky eater even asked for more spinach. Super simple and it looks like restaurant food.

    1. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about “simple” lol. But it was actually good. I only had half-and-half so it was a little thinner, still tasty though. Next time I’ll use heavy cream like you said.

    2. User avatar otis.bruen53 says:

      5 stars
Agree! I made this exactly as written and it really does taste like restaurant food. The creamy garlic-parm sauce is the star, and the spinach/tomatoes don’t get mushy at all.

  24. User avatar chu.hartmann says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight—super comforting. The cream + parmesan combo is spot on, and the spinach actually stays bright instead of getting soggy. I added a pinch of chili flakes too.

  25. 3 stars
Not gonna lie, I expected more tomato flavor. The cherry tomatoes were nice, but I think I needed to cook them a minute longer or add more. Otherwise, it’s a solid weeknight meal.

  26. 4 stars
I didn’t have tortellini so I used penne instead. Still tastes good!

  27. User avatar delmar.wisozk2007 says:

    5 stars
This was an awesome recipe! So creamy and delicious. My kids loved it!

    1. 5 stars
I’m so glad you and your kids loved it! It’s a family favorite for sure!

    2. 3 stars
Looks good, but I don’t know about spinach. Does it really taste that great in there?

  28. User avatar odell.wintheiser29 says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it was seriously so comforting. The sauce turned out silky and the spinach + tomatoes combo felt really fresh. I used a little extra parmesan and it was perfect.

  29. User avatar neville.murazik says:

    5 stars
5/5—like restaurant quality. Fresh cherry tomatoes gave it little pops of sweetness. I also used fresh tortellini and it held up perfectly after tossing.

    1. User avatar david.auer63 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—using fresh cherry tomatoes is such a game changer. I did basically the same thing and it tasted way more “real” than bland jar sauce vibes 😄

    2. User avatar efrain.hill says:

      3 stars
Restaurant quality, huh? I’m skeptical but I’ll try it. My only question: does fresh tortellini sometimes get mushy when you toss it in cream like that?

  30. User avatar richard.raynor75 says:

    4 stars
Super easy to make, made a few changes tho. Used broccoli instead of spinach and it turned out fine!

  31. 5 stars
Wow this is the best thing ive had in ages! My partner devoured it!

  32. 5 stars
This recipe was super easy and delicious! My kids loved it!

  33. User avatar francisca.jones says:

    5 stars
5 stars for sure. So good! Just right for a cozy night in.

  34. 4 stars
I didn’t have tortellini, so I used penne instead. It still turned out pretty good! But I think tortellini would be better.

    1. 3 stars
Really? I think tortellini is overrated. Penne sounds just as good! You should try it with some sausage next time.

    2. User avatar rosalind.ernser1994 says:

      4 stars
I bet penne was still great! Pasta is pasta, right? Just add a little more cheese! 🧀

  35. User avatar gerardo.schiller1 says:

    4 stars
I thought tortellini was supposed to be boiled! You gotta boil it, right? I skipped a step or what?

    1. User avatar dante.vonrueden says:

      5 stars
Yes, you’re right! Boiling the tortellini is super important for it to cook properly. Skipping that step might lead to it being tough. Hope it turns out better next time!

  36. User avatar Death Hound says:

    4 stars
The sauce came out silky, but I had to keep stirring the parmesan or it got a little grainy. Next time I’ll lower the heat. Still delicious though!

  37. User avatar mike.mcdermott says:

    5 stars
This was absolutely delicious! My family loved it. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar van.ankunding5 says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! This recipe is a family favorite of mine too. What sides did you serve with it?

    2. 3 stars
Looks good but can I make it without cream? Excessive calories, ya know?

  38. User avatar carmon.rogahn says:

    5 stars
Sooo goooddd! Best thing I’ve tried in a while! 😍

    1. User avatar logan.harber61 says:

I’m so glad you loved it! It’s one of my favorites too! 🥰

  39. User avatar moises.pfannerstill says:

    3 stars
I mean, it’s pretty good, but I think it needs more flavor… maybe some chili flakes?

  40. User avatar Wonko the Sane says:

    3 stars
Spinach? Eww. I skipped it and it was fine. Still creamy but needed something. Maybe more cheese?

    1. User avatar mitch.stehr says:

      5 stars
More cheese sounds good! Spinach or not, cheese makes everything better. 😋

    2. 3 stars
I dunno, spinach is super healthy! You can barely taste it in this. Why skip it?
