Cola Chicken

February 1, 2024

Cola chicken is a surprisingly delicious dish that combines the bold flavors of soy sauce and garlic with the sweetness of cola to create a sticky, savory glaze. It’s an easy-to-make recipe that’s packed with flavor, perfect for a weeknight dinner or when you’re craving something a bit different.

The beauty of cola chicken lies in its simplicity. You start by cooking bone-in chicken pieces (like thighs or drumsticks) in a hot pan until they’re crispy and golden brown. The skin crisps up beautifully, providing a nice contrast to the tender, juicy meat.

Then comes the magic, pour in cola, soy sauce, garlic, and a touch of ginger, and let the mixture simmer. The cola caramelizes, infusing the chicken with a rich sweetness while the soy sauce adds savory depth. A little sugar helps to enhance the glaze, creating a sweet and salty flavor that sticks to the chicken perfectly.

As the sauce reduces and thickens, it creates a luscious, glossy coating on the chicken, making each bite even more flavorful. The resulting glaze is both sweet and tangy, with hints of umami from the soy sauce and a slight kick of garlic and ginger. It’s a simple, but satisfying combination that makes the chicken irresistibly good.

Serve cola chicken over steamed rice or alongside roasted vegetables to soak up all that delicious sauce. The sweet, savory, and slightly sticky coating makes this dish a hit with kids and adults alike. You can even make it ahead and reheat for an easy meal prep option.

Cola chicken is a fun and unique way to switch up your usual dinner routine. It’s flavorful, tender, and offers a comforting sweetness that makes it an easy favorite in any household. Whether you’re looking for something new or just want to try a different take on chicken, cola chicken is a must-try!

Not bad, but I feel like it could use something else, maybe some hot sauce?

I think hot sauce would be a great touch! Spicy food is the best! 🍽️

Yummy chicken! 😋 Never thought of using cola this way, it worked!

  3. 3 stars
Hmmm, never thought about cola with chicken. I got some left over cola from BBQ party, hm…🤔

  4. 2 stars
I’m not a fan of mixing sweet stuff with meat. It was too weird for me. Sorry but no thanks!

    1. User avatar shellie.corkery56 says:

      2 stars
Honestly, chicken with cola? That sounds gross. I’m sticking to my BBQ sauces!

    2. User avatar exie.bogan81 says:

I get what you mean, mixing sweet and savory can be a bit strange! But I love this recipe! The cola adds a unique flavor!

  5. 2 stars
Is it really safe to use cola like this? I thought sugary stuff was bad for meat?

  6. 4 stars
Tastes like a sweet barbecue! Reminds me of summer cookouts!

  7. 3 stars
I don’t like ginger, can I leave it out? Will that ruin the dish?

I made this for dinner and it was a hit! Easy recipe and cleanup was a breeze. Totally recommend!

I skipped the ginger because I didn’t have any, but it still turned out great!

    1. User avatar milan.wunsch says:

      4 stars
I’m glad it turned out well for you! Ginger does add a nice kick, but sometimes you gotta work with what you have. What did you serve it with?

  13. User avatar Chaurus Hunter says:

    4 stars
Yummy and easy! But a bit too sweet for my taste. Next time, I’ll skip the brown sugar.

  14. User avatar vonda.farrell81 says:

    5 stars
I added some chili flakes to spice it up. Fire! 🔥

  15. 3 stars
It was ok, but my chicken came out dry. Maybe I baked it too long.

  16. 3 stars
Way to easyyy! I kinda burnt it tho…still tasty. 🍗🔥

Made this tonight—surprisingly tasty. The cola + ketchup combo makes a sticky, almost BBQ-style glaze. I marinated overnight and the garlic/ginger really came through. Will do again!

    1. 5 stars
Yes! That sticky cola-ketchup glaze is the best part. I’m glad the garlic/ginger came through—mine always smells so good before it even goes in the oven.

  19. User avatar blair.gorczany says:

    5 stars
This was surprisingly good! Who knew cola could make chicken so tasty?

    2. 2 stars
Sounds nice, but cola? Really? I don’t think that combo makes sense. Can’t imagine how that would taste.

  21. User avatar GOPster says:

    5 stars
    Chicken! Yummy!!!

  22. User avatar ching.miller1956 says:

    3 stars
The instructions are simple, but 35-40 min feels short depending on your thighs. Mine needed like 50 minutes to be fully cooked. Check temp, not time!

    1. 4 stars
35-40 min was never enough for me either. I’d say mine took around 50 like you. The sauce gets sticky but the inside needs more time—so yeah, check temp!

    2. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—ovens and thigh thickness vary a lot. I go by temp too. Mine was closer to 45 min until it hit the right doneness.

  23. User avatar carrol.haley94 says:

    5 stars
This was surprisingly good! I didn’t think cola would work in a chicken recipe, but it adds a nice sweetness. Will definitely make again!

  24. User avatar gertrude.hodkiewicz says:

    4 stars
Simple and nice! Took me longer than 40 minutes tho, my oven can be a bit slow.

  25. 3 stars
Y’all are gonna think I’m crazy, but I added a cup of cola instead of a quarter. It was a lil too sweet but still tasty! 😋

  26. User avatar josue.bode29 says:

Cola chicken? Sounds weird! But i can’t judge till i try it… Maybe i’ll give it a shot, but sounds risky!

Cola chicken?? This sounds like something my grandma would make when she ran out of real drink. 😂

  32. 3 stars
Sounds easy but what if you don’t have ketchup? Can you just use barbacue sauce instead? Asking for a friend… lol

  33. 1 star
Cola and chicken just don’t mix. Why would anyone do this? I only gave it a 1 because the chicken cooked well.

  34. User avatar jennette.gottlieb says:

Didn’t have cola, used root beer instead, whoops! Still tasted nice tho.

    1. User avatar Dian Schneider II says:

  49. User avatar jarrod.kuhic says:

Made this last night—sweet-salty combo is legit. The sauce really thickened by the end and the chicken stayed juicy. I used regular cola and it still slapped.

  50. User avatar micah.abshire2012 says:

    5 stars
Delicious recipe! My kids ate all the chicken in one go. Thanks for sharing!

Super easy to make! I used diet cola because it’s what I had and it turned out fine. My kids totally loved it!

  52. 2 stars
Not my favorite. It was too sweet for my taste. Trying to add more salt might help.

  53. 5 stars
This was so easy and delicious! My family loved it! 5 stars!

  54. User avatar rick.blanda6 says:

  55. User avatar muoi.kshlerin says:

    2 stars
I didn’t have cola, so I used different soda… maybe not the best idea. It was weird.

  56. 2 stars
Okay, but can someone explain why anyone would put soda on meat? That’s bizarre!

    1. User avatar Renetta Nienow MD says:

      2 stars
Sounds strange tbh. I’d rather use spices than some fizzy drink. Can’t imagine it tasting good.

    2. User avatar jovita.blick97 says:

      5 stars
I used to think that too, but the cola actually tenderizes the meat and adds a unique sweetness! You’ve gotta try it!

  57. User avatar jay.bashirian says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe but it was a little too salty for my taste. Next time I’ll cut the salt and maybe add more ginger. Still good though.

  58. User avatar gale.zulauf77 says:

    2 stars
Not sure about the baking time. I baked 40 minutes and it wasn’t fully cooked in the middle, so I had to go another 10. Also, “thickened” didn’t happen for me until the last few minutes.

  59. 5 stars
Yum! Just made it! It was finger-licking good!

  60. 1 star
Not a fan of the taste. The sweetness is just too much for me. Sorry.

Sounds weird! Coca-cola on chicken? Idk about that! Gonna stick with my BBQ sauce.

    1. User avatar hermine.dibbert19 says:

      5 stars
I was skeptical too, but trust me, the cola adds a sweet tang you wouldn’t expect! Give it a shot!

  65. User avatar brenton.mertz says:

    4 stars
I dunno, it felt kinda weird to use cola. I thought it would ruin it but my family loved it!

  66. 3 stars
I dunno about this combination. Seems like it could be a flop? I might try it but only if I have nothing else to cook.

  67. User avatar janyce.cummings1996 says:

OMG so good and so easy! Even my husband who doesn’t cook enjoyed helping out with this!

  70. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    2 stars
Not sure about the cola part. It made my kitchen smell like a soda fountain, and the sauce was okay but not amazing. Could be better with less sugar.

    1. User avatar walker.denesik2021 says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean about the cola smell—mine definitely turned sweet-soda-y too. I’ve had better results using a smaller splash of cola and letting it reduce longer so it doesn’t end up tasting sugary. Maybe start with 2–3 tbsp instead of 1/4 cup?

    2. 2 stars
Huh, I disagree. Cola is literally what makes it taste like that sticky glazed chicken. If yours was “okay but not amazing,” maybe your ketchup/soy ratio was off or you used extra brown sugar. Also 375°F for 35-40 min sometimes leaves thighs kinda bland—try higher heat or longer bake.

  71. User avatar Hasimir Fenring says:

    2 stars
Looks simple but no way my chicken is going in cola. Can’t trust it. 2 stars for effort.

    1. User avatar leonardo.fahey says:

      4 stars
I understand your hesitation! Cola does sound weird, but it can add a nice sweetness. Have you ever tried cooking with soda before? It might surprise you!

  72. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    5 stars
I used diet cola and it was still amazing. Highly recommend!

  73. User avatar cammy.lockman says:

I dunno, kinda gross if you ask me. Who puts soda on chicken? Doesn’t sat well with me.

  74. User avatar samuel.boyer says:

I was skeptical about using cola, but it turned out surprisingly good. Will make again!

    1. User avatar Madam MeowMeow says:

  77. User avatar reena.beier59 says:

Seems kinda weird… like why ketchup + soda? I might try it once, but I don’t trust sweet marinades with chicken. Idk.

  80. 3 stars
Really easy recipe. I forgot to marinate it overnight but it still turned out fine. 😉

    1. User avatar valeria.ferry26 says:

Ketchup and soy sauce together? I don’t think that sounds good. Just stick to BBQ!

  83. User avatar reginald.batz says:

Whoa, cola in chicken? Sounds strange. Are you sure this will taste good?

  84. User avatar mauricio.kessler77 says:

Simple and delicious! My kids loved it. I will definitely make it again but with more garlic!

  85. User avatar Thufir Hawat says:

    4 stars
The flavor combo is weirdly perfect. Soy + ketchup + cola tastes like it shouldn’t work, but it does. I used chicken breasts instead and still came out juicy.

  86. User avatar sharda.waters says:

    3 stars
Not sure what I expected, but it tasted more like sweet soy glaze than actual “cola.” Still decent, my family ate it, so win?

    1. 5 stars
That makes total sense—cola’s mostly adding sweetness + dark flavor, so it ends up closer to a cola-soy glaze than true soda taste. I think it’s still the right direction though; glad your family ate it!

  87. User avatar golda.hauck2006 says:

    5 stars
This was surprisingly good! I was skeptical about cola as a marinade, but it really worked! I’ll make it again.

  88. User avatar sharmaine.gerhold62 says:

    3 stars
Instructions were clear but the cooking time seemed off. I had to bake it longer. Kind of frustrating.

  89. User avatar jamar.miller1997 says:

    4 stars
This is giving “I have cola in the fridge so I’m making dinner” vibes lol. Still turned out good though. Next time I’ll marinade longer than 1 hour.

    1. User avatar latisha.pagac85 says:

      5 stars
😂 “cola in the fridge” is exactly the energy. Glad it still worked out though—marinating longer definitely helps the flavor sink in more.

  90. 3 stars
I replaced cola with sprite and it still turned out okay! But where’s the ketchup flavor?

  91. User avatar laurie.russel says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about putting cola in chicken… but wow. The sauce thickened nicely and the flavor is way better than I expected.

  92. User avatar lanita.lind says:

    1 star
    why cola???? lol

  93. 4 stars
Interesting idea with cola in the marinade. I was skeptical but the flavor is kinda tangy and sticky. Next time I’ll add a pinch of chili flakes though.

    1. 4 stars
Cola marinade sounds kinda weird ngl. But the sauce being tangy makes sense. I might cut the ketchup a bit though so it’s not too sweet.

    2. User avatar felix.heller93 says:

      5 stars
I tried something similar with cola once—totally agree it gets sticky. I added chili flakes and a squeeze of lime and it really popped. Great idea!

  94. 5 stars
This recipe is a total game changer! The cola adds such a unique flavor, my kids loved it! 🤩

    1. User avatar jonell.corwin says:

      5 stars
I tried it and my kids were all over it! Definitely making it again. 🤗

  95. User avatar mindy.schowalter28 says:

    4 stars
Super easy and tasty! But I forgot green onions. Still good!

  96. User avatar ema.dickinson says:

    2 stars
Wasn’t a fan. The cola made the chicken too sweet for my taste. Maybe cut down on the sugar next time.

  97. 3 stars
Mine came out a little too sweet even with the 1 tbsp brown sugar. Could be my ketchup brand (pretty sugary). Still tasty, just needs balancing—maybe less sugar or more pepper.

    1. User avatar Loonquawl and Phouchg says:

      5 stars
Yeah, ketchup varies a lot—some are basically dessert. I’d try cutting the brown sugar to 2 tsp and upping the pepper a bit like you said.

  98. User avatar loren.breitenberg54 says:

    5 stars
Marinated for a whole day and best decision ever! Juicy chicken, thanks!

    1. User avatar lois.sanford4 says:

      5 stars
You’re right! Marinating really does make a huge difference. I never thought about using cola, but it sounds delicious!

  99. User avatar lois.schmitt53 says:

    3 stars
Chicken thighs? Aren’t those fatty? I prefer chicken breast for a healthier dish.

  100. User avatar lazaro.zboncak says:

    5 stars
Made this last night—sweet, sticky, and the ginger/garlic really comes through. I didn’t even bother with extra glaze at the end and it still looked great.

    1. User avatar jada.hahn says:

      5 stars
Nice! I always worry that without the extra glaze it won’t caramelize, but if it still came out sticky then that’s a win. Next time I’ll skip it too 😄

  101. 2 stars
I followed it exactly and the sauce got kinda burned on the edges… maybe my oven runs hot. Flavor was nice though. Could use foil or a lower temp.

  102. User avatar nola.bechtelar87 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly, but mine got a little too salty even though I used low-sodium soy sauce. Maybe 1/2 tsp salt is a lot for some brands?

  103. User avatar halflife4 says:

    4 stars
This is the weirdest combo I’ve ever seen but surprisingly good! The cola adds a nice sweetness.

Pretty good, though mine was a bit too salty. I think I measured the salt wrong or reduced it down too much. Flavor’s still solid—just be careful with the salt.

Thanks! I’m glad the flavor held up even if it was a little salty. I usually start with slightly less salt since the soy sauce already brings a lot of salt—might be why yours got too salty if the salt got overmeasured.

Mine came out salty too 😅 Next time I’m gonna cut the 1/2 tsp salt in half. Also are we supposed to reduce the cola in the pan or just bake it straight? I think I might’ve skipped something.

This was mid. The sauce thickened but the chicken didn’t brown much in my oven. I ended up broiling for a few minutes—then it got better.

Mid? Hmm. Did you bake with the dish uncovered? I feel like 375F is too low to brown thighs unless you use higher heat or switch to the broiler from the start. Also I always let it sit longer than an hour—overnight makes a difference. Not saying yours was wrong, just trying to troubleshoot 😅

Thanks for the real-world note! I’ve had the same issue when I don’t broil—oven heat can be gentle and the chicken stays pale. I’m glad broiling helped get it better 👍

Made this last week—sweet, sticky, and honestly super easy. I reduced the cola a bit on the stove first and the sauce turned out thicker. Great weeknight dinner!

I was skeptical about using cola, but the sauce thickened nicely in the oven and the chicken stayed juicy. Next time I’ll add a little chili flakes for some heat.

That’s awesome—cola totally sounds weird at first, but I love that it actually thickened and kept the chicken juicy. Chili flakes next time is a great move!

375°F for 40 mins was perfect for me, but my thighs were smaller so I checked at 30. Also don’t skip pouring the marinade over—makes it taste richer.

Cola chicken sounds kinda weird ngl. Like why not just BBQ sauce? I tried it and didn’t love it, sorry. Didn’t taste like cola at all.
