Beef and Potato Pie

March 12, 2025

Beef and potato pie is the ultimate comfort food, perfect for cozy dinners and family gatherings. With its rich, savory filling of tender beef, earthy potatoes, and aromatic herbs, this dish brings together satisfying flavors in a flaky, golden crust. The combination of hearty ingredients and the savory depth of the beef creates a filling meal that will leave you feeling both full and content.

The filling of this pie is the heart of the dish. Ground beef is slowly cooked until tender, then combined with potatoes that absorb the flavors of the beef, creating a perfectly balanced mixture. The addition of onions, garlic, and herbs such as thyme or rosemary enhances the savory taste, giving the pie a fragrant and comforting quality. Some variations even include vegetables like peas or carrots, which add sweetness and color to the filling.

The flaky, buttery pie crust adds the perfect contrast to the rich filling, and the golden-brown edges provide a satisfying crunch with every bite. While you can make your own pie crust from scratch, store-bought options work wonderfully as well, saving time while still offering a delicious result.

Beef and potato pie is a versatile dish that can be served on its own or with a side of greens or salad to add freshness and balance. Its satisfying nature makes it an excellent choice for family meals, potlucks, or even as a make-ahead dish for busy days. The pie can be easily frozen for later enjoyment, making it a great option to prepare in advance.

Whether you enjoy it fresh from the oven or reheated as leftovers, beef and potato pie is a hearty, comforting dish that will quickly become a favorite in your recipe rotation.

This recipe was amazing! The beef and potatoes were so flavorful. Will definitely make it again!

  2. User avatar moses.hessel33 says:

    4 stars
Really good flavor, and the prep was pretty straightforward. Mine came out a little runny though, so next time I’ll simmer the filling a couple minutes longer before assembling.

    Delicious comfort food!

  4. User avatar lizbeth.reichel says:

Not sure about cooking flour in step 4 for only 1-2 minutes—feels kinda short to me. Still tasty though.

  5. User avatar casey.walsh0 says:

Solid recipe, but I’d suggest adding a pinch of thyme or rosemary to the beef mixture. Without herbs it tastes a bit flat to me. Still very tasty though—my family asked for seconds.

  6. 3 stars
It was okay, but my crust turned out soggy… what did I do wrong?

  7. User avatar rosanna.wiza2008 says:

    4 stars
I added some carrots and peas, turned out fantastic! Thanks!

  8. User avatar loree.bailey53 says:

I accidentally used sweet potatoes and it turned out weird. Still edible tho!

  9. User avatar lacey.gibson says:

    5 stars
This is delicious! I used leftover mashed potatoes and it still worked—just mashed a little thicker. My family asked for seconds.

    1. 4 stars
Huh, I always thought the mash would mess up the texture. But if it’s still golden on top then I’m sold. Did you still pre-bake the crust for 10 mins too?

    2. 5 stars
Glad it worked for you! Leftover mash is such a good shortcut—thicker mash probably helps it set up nicely without getting runny. Seconds is the best review 😄

  10. User avatar Von Kuphal says:

    4 stars
Why do you mash the potatoes with butter when you already have butter in the filling? Seems redundant, but I guess it helps. Mine looked great, 10/10 would eat again.

I felt like it was missing somethin. Maybe more spices? 🤔

First pie? Wow, that’s impressive! But I wonder, did your beef turn out nice and moist?

Missed the part about pre-baking the crust. Now it’s soggy. Ugh. 😡

  14. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

Fabulous! Comfort food at its best. I can’t stop eating it!

  15. 4 stars
Beef + potato is always a win. I used garlic powder instead of fresh because I’m lazy, and it was still tasty. Wouldn’t mind more pepper next time.

  16. 4 stars
I substituted ground turkey. It turned out great! Less greasy and healthier, I think.

  17. 1 star
Beef and potato pie?! Who made this? I could do better! 😂

  18. 4 stars
Why pre-bake the crust for 10 min? I skipped that and my bottom got soggy. Lesson learned—this recipe is right about that step.

  19. User avatar melodee.jacobs31 says:

    5 stars
I added carrots and peas to mine. Much better with them!

    1. User avatar Eddie Bull says:

      5 stars
I love that idea! Carrots and peas add such nice flavor and color. I might try that next time! 🌟

    2. User avatar Ashanti Zulauf V says:

      2 stars
Nah, I don’t think veggies belong in a beef pie. It’s not a stew! Just stick to the meat and potatoes.

  20. 4 stars
Just made it, but forgot the flour! LOL still turned out okay. 😅

  21. User avatar ulrike.shanahan2016 says:

    4 stars
Good flavor but mine got a bit thick—maybe I simmered too long or my broth was less liquid. Still tasted great though.

  22. 3 stars
My pie crust shrank a little and I panicked for a second 😅 Still came out edible and the family ate it all.

  23. User avatar Dr. Andre Fahey says:

This is such an easy weeknight pie. I used store-bought crust and it still felt homemade. Kids asked for seconds (rare!).

  24. 3 stars
I tried it but it was too greasy for my taste. Maybe use less beef?

    1. User avatar pete.beier96 says:

      3 stars
I found it pretty good, but I guess everyone has different tastes. Maybe try adding more veggies next time!

  25. User avatar steve_maga says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but my pie crust shrank a bit even though I pre-baked it. Next time I’ll dock the crust and maybe reduce the baking time slightly so it doesn’t over-brown.

  26. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

    2 stars
Does this really take an hour? Seems too long for me, I ain’t got time for that.

  28. User avatar Chaurus Hunter says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly, but it turned out kinda bland. Maybe I under-salted? Like the recipe says “salt to taste” so I guess that’s on me. Still ate it all though 😅

  29. User avatar amada.kertzmann90 says:

    2 stars
Not really a fan of the crust. It came out soggy. 🤷‍♂️

  33. User avatar ali.lynch9 says:

I don’t know, I feel like there’s too much beef and not enough flavor. Needs more spices.

  34. User avatar mariam.considine says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have beef broth so I used water and it turned out fine, lol.

    1. 3 stars
Really? Water instead of beef broth? That seems risky. But if you liked it, that’s cool. Just don’t expect the same flavor! 😬

    2. 5 stars
Haha, sometimes you gotta improvise! Water works too, I guess. Glad it turned out well! 😊

  35. User avatar ida.kiehn says:

    3 stars
Uhh, this is just shepherd’s pie with a fancy name, right?

  36. User avatar yung.jenkins says:

Haven’t tried it yet, but it sounds easy enough. 🤔

    1. User avatar shoshana.feil says:

      2 stars
I dunno, sounds kinda bland to me. Where’s the seasoning? 🤷‍♂️

    2. 5 stars
It really is easy! Just follow the steps and you’ll be fine. 🍽️

  37. User avatar jeramy.kohler22 says:

  40. User avatar elwanda.weber2007 says:

The combination of mashed potatoes on top is genius. I used homemade pie crust and it was flaky as heck. Would serve to guests for sure.

  41. User avatar liberal.hero says:

My grandma used to make something like this, but with chicken. Yours looks good too tho! Great recipe.

  42. User avatar gertie.mann35 says:

    3 stars
I don’t know, it was kinda bland. I think I need to spice it up more next time. Add some herbs maybe?

  43. User avatar lanny.armstrong says:

    2 stars
This tastes like a British food or something. Not really my style!

    1. User avatar reiko.hane86 says:

      4 stars
Not everyone likes British food, and that’s okay! Everyone has their own tastes. Maybe try adding some spices to mix it up?

  44. User avatar josefine.pfeffer says:

    3 stars
Just okay. Next time I’ll add some cheese on top. Might make a difference.

  45. User avatar Ione Cummerata says:

    4 stars
The flavor is good, but 1 cup broth might be a little too much or not enough depending on your meat. I had to cook it a bit longer to thicken.

  46. User avatar Saruman the White says:

    5 stars
This came out super comforting. The gravy-like beef filling is so good with the mashed potato topping—golden crust and all. I didn’t change a thing and it tasted like a classic diner pie.

  47. User avatar sacha.schamberger42 says:

    3 stars
Why don’t you just microwave the potatoes? Isn’t that easier?

  49. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    4 stars
The steps are clear and timing was pretty accurate. I used pre-made crust and it still turned out great. Next time I might add a pinch of thyme because I like it, but flavor is already solid.

  50. User avatar helena.hartmann42 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly but my beef mixture never really thickened—maybe my broth was too watery? I ended up cooking it longer until it got more like a sauce. Still tasty.

    1. User avatar nolan.wilkinson68 says:

      4 stars
That sounds super frustrating! Yeah, if the broth was a bit more watery than the recipe’s 1 cup, it can stay thin. Next time you could simmer it a little longer or add an extra pinch of flour (or even a tiny slurry with 1 tsp flour + water).

    2. User avatar Ron Durgan says:

      3 stars
Maybe your beef just had more liquid from the pan? I always drain well after browning, otherwise it won’t thicken right. Also did you stir constantly when adding broth?

  51. User avatar rene.fadel says:

    5 stars
This pie was a hit with my family! So hearty and delicious. Definitely making it again!

    1. User avatar cyril.schulist23 says:

      5 stars
I made this last night and it was devine! My kids loved it so much they asked for thirds!

    2. User avatar marcos.emmerich6 says:

      3 stars
Really? I thought it was kinda bland. Maybe I didn’t add enough spices? 🤔

  52. User avatar lincoln.dietrich70 says:

    4 stars
Made something similar but I skipped pre-baking the crust. Big mistake 😅 This step really helps it not get soggy.

  53. User avatar vera.vandervort8 says:

    2 stars
Could you use chicken instead of beef? Asking for a friend.

  54. 3 stars
I’m skeptical about pre-baking the crust. Mine browned fast and I had to cover the edges with foil. But the filling was tasty!

  55. 5 stars
This recipe was so good! The flavors blended perfectly and my family loved it. Will definitely make it again!

  56. User avatar josephina.ritchie says:

    5 stars
This was soooo good! My family devoured it! Definitely a keeper!

    1. User avatar felton.greenholt19 says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad to hear that! This dish always brings my family together too. What side dishes did you serve with it?

  57. 3 stars
Not bad, but I think it needed a bit more seasoning. Also, the crust was kinda hard. Maybe I did something wrong?

  58. User avatar mauricio.wolf says:

    3 stars
Could you use chicken instead of beef? I think it might be better.

  59. User avatar zelma.strosin64 says:

    4 stars
Yum! But why so much butter? Too greasy for my taste.

  60. User avatar joan.gottlieb says:

    2 stars
Ehh… ground beef + potatoes is fine, but I didn’t get that “wow” moment. Might be the store pie crust—mine shrank and the edges weren’t as pretty.

    1. User avatar kristopher.williamson18 says:

      4 stars
Oof, that’s exactly the kind of thing store crusts do 😅 Mine always shrink too. I usually dock the bottom with a fork and chill the dough before baking so it holds shape better.

    2. User avatar Aaron Padberg says:

      4 stars
Hmm I didn’t have that happen, but I did sub in homemade crust and it came out super flaky. Maybe your pre-bake time was too long or your dish was smaller than the crust?

  61. User avatar mary.hartmann42 says:

    5 stars
The instructions are clear and the times were mostly right. I drained the fat like it said and that made a huge difference.

  62. User avatar debbi.hoeger2003 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, though I think my pie crust shrank a bit during the pre-bake. Flavor was solid and the onions/garlc combo smells amazing. Would recommend letting it cool longer than a few minutes so it slices cleaner.

  63. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but 375°F feels a bit low to me—my crust stayed pale. I ended up baking closer to 40 minutes. Next time I’ll tweak the time/temp.

  64. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, the “1 cup beef broth” and “2 tbsp flour” ratio is kinda weird. My filling was thin for a while, but it thickened after I simmered longer.

  65. 3 stars
I’m skeptical about pre-baking the crust for only 10 minutes—mine browned too much at the edges. Still tasted great though, just watch it.

  66. 4 stars
Pretty good base recipe! I didn’t drain the fat as thoroughly (oops) so it was a bit greasy, but adding extra broth and longer simmer fixed it. Next time I’ll be more careful.

  67. User avatar keli.feeney58 says:

    3 stars
Potatoes and meat in a pie? Is this a real thing? Sounds strange but maybe I’ll try.

  68. User avatar lorine.stanton says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it turned out super comforting—golden top and the filling was actually thick like it should be. My family went back for seconds. I used homemade crust and it was worth it!

    1. 4 stars
I tried something similar once and mine stayed kinda runny. Do you think the key is cooking the flour long enough (step 4)?

    2. User avatar Emilio Rolfson says:

      5 stars
So glad it worked for you! That thick gravy/filling is the whole point 😄 Golden top too—nice!

  69. User avatar Yooden Vranx says:

    5 stars
This turned out so comforting! The gravy-like filling is spot on, and the potato layer makes it feel super homemade. I used homemade crust and it was *chef’s kiss*.

    1. User avatar dominique.pagac says:

      4 stars
I’m glad yours worked! Quick question though—when you say “gravy-like,” did it really thicken with just 2 tbsp flour and 1 cup broth? Mine was kinda thin so I added more flour and it was fine after.

    2. User avatar carmel.rippin31 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That gravy-like filling is exactly what makes it. I did the same potato mash step and it turned out so cozy. Homemade crust really levels it up 😍

  70. User avatar ellsworth.gerlach21 says:

    1 star
I missed the step with the broth. What now? Help!

  71. User avatar brett.lowe57 says:

    2 stars
I mess up the crust, but it still tasted okay. Why is pie crust so tough?!

  72. User avatar Pizpot Gargravarr says:

    4 stars
Really solid recipe. I didn’t pre-bake the crust long enough though, so the bottom was a bit soft. Next time I’ll extend that step and maybe add a little extra pepper for kick.

  73. 3 stars
I’m skeptical about the flour step—“cook 1-2 minutes” sounds vague, like will it thicken or not? Mine was a little lumpy at first but stirring more fixed it. Tastes good though.

    1. 3 stars
Mine never thickened when I rushed the flour step 😅 I think it needs more stirring and maybe a minute longer. Lumps happened too, but once it’s simmering 5 min it usually comes together.

    2. User avatar zachary.buckridge2026 says:

      4 stars
Yeah “1–2 minutes” is definitely vague. I usually wait until the flour smell is slightly toasted and it looks smooth—then the broth thickens way faster.

  74. User avatar jame.graham26 says:

    2 stars
I really wanted to like this… but it was kinda bland. Needs more seasoning!

    1. User avatar ivette.batz says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! I added some paprika and Worcestershire sauce, and it turned out great! Give it a try next time.

  75. 1 star
Nope! This ain’t it, chief! Tasted weird. Not trying again.

    1. 4 stars
Sorry to hear that! Maybe try adding some spices next time? Might help with the weird taste! 🤷‍♀️

    2. 2 stars
Honestly, I think you did something wrong. This recipe is super easy! Can’t be that weird…

  76. 5 stars
So good!! Had it for dinner yesterday and I can’t stop thinking about it.

  77. 3 stars
Flavor was decent but I think my mash got a bit dry. Next time I’ll use a splash more butter or broth. Also needed more salt than “to taste” for me.

  78. 4 stars
Simple and easy. I’m not a great cook, but I managed! Was really proud of myself!

  79. User avatar otis.collins1951 says:

    3 stars
I followed it mostly, but I accidentally cooked the flour too long (kinda browned). Still tasted okay, just not as smooth. Also, I didn’t drain enough fat from the beef and it got a little greasy.

    1. User avatar kermit.graham97 says:

      4 stars
Honestly that sounds still pretty close—browning the flour just makes it a bit thicker/nuttier, and the greasy part is fixable next time (drain more or pat the beef). Good save!

  80. User avatar hertha.gislason says:

    5 stars
My family loved it, especially the cheesy-mouthfeel (lol). I mixed in a pinch of thyme and it tasted fancy without much effort.

    1. User avatar aron.cummerata1990 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That cheesy-mouthfeel comment made me laugh 😂 I’m glad it came out fancy with minimal effort. I bet thyme is such a good upgrade.

    2. User avatar elease.aufderhar58 says:

      3 stars
I tried this but I think my “cheesy-mouthfeel” was just the mashed potatoes 😅 Also I added thyme AND a little oregano, and it was okay. Next time I’ll bake it longer so the bottom doesn’t get soggy.

  81. 5 stars
So much better than my mom’s idea of beef pie (which I didn’t like)!

  82. User avatar sonia.halvorson says:

    2 stars
375F for 25-30 min… my oven laughed. Took way longer to brown. Also I drained the fat but maybe not enough, because the filling was a bit greasy. Still, pretty good and easy.

    1. User avatar boyd.hoeger89 says:

      4 stars
Oh no 😅 ovens always do that. I’m glad it still tasted good though—greasy filling usually means either the beef wasn’t fully drained or the fat hadn’t had time to cook off before thickening.

    2. User avatar lindsey.sauer10 says:

      4 stars
375 for 25-30 is super optimistic, honestly. Mine never browns that fast unless I turn the rack up or crank it a bit at the end. Still, sounds tasty!

  83. User avatar gertha.hoeger68 says:

    5 stars
Made this for my family and everyone went back for seconds. The beef thickened nicely after simmering. I think letting it cool a bit actually mattered—slice held together better.

  84. User avatar ayako.kuphal says:

    5 stars
My husband said this was the best thing I’ve ever made. Not bad for my first pie! Thank you!

    1. 5 stars
Wow, that sounds amazing! I love hearing when home cooking impresses family. Congrats on your first pie!

  85. User avatar Frankie and Benjy says:

    4 stars
My pie crust tore when I tried to fit it in the dish… I pressed it back together and baked anyway. It still tasted good though, so I guess the crust doesn’t have to be perfect 😅

  86. User avatar Colin the Security Robot says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it came out super comforting. The gravy-style filling is actually perfect, and the potato layer makes it feel like a real “pie” instead of just a casserole. Will definitely repeat!

    1. User avatar Brighton Early says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I love how the gravy-style filling keeps it from being dry. The potato layer does make it feel like a proper pie—totally agree. 🙌

    2. User avatar mardell.koepp1976 says:

      4 stars
Made it once and thought it was a little bland, but I’m guessing my salt was off. Do you add more pepper or any herbs?

  87. User avatar dorothea.tromp15 says:

    5 stars
This is basically my childhood pie vibes. I added frozen peas because I can’t help myself. Also, I don’t drain all the fat every time—like, too much effort 😂—but it still worked.

  88. User avatar anitra.jones says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about pre-baking the crust—seems like extra work—but it actually helped a lot. Bottom wasn’t soggy at all. Good call in the recipe.

  89. 2 stars
This was kinda bland for me. I followed it exactly and even used fresh garlic. The beef mixture needed more pepper or like thyme? Maybe my potatoes were watery.

  90. User avatar Falmer Spellsword says:

    3 stars
I ain’t never made a pie before, and this one was alright. Gonna try again!

  91. User avatar catherin.tillman says:

    1. User avatar raymond.fisher41 says:

      3 stars
I’m not sure about thyme in a beef + potato situation… but homemade crust? That I’d try. Did you add the thyme to the beef gravy or sprinkle it on the potatoes?

That sounds so good! Homemade crust really does make pies taste way more “bakery.” I love the thyme addition too—totally agree it makes it feel extra fancy.

Made this tonight and it was super comforting. The gravy part thickened perfectly after simmering, and the mashed potato top made it feel like a real pie-shop meal.

Yes!! That sounds exactly like the kind of comfort food I crave. I love when the gravy thickens right instead of turning watery. Also that mashed potato layer is such a genius pie-shop touch.

Beef? In a pie? Sounds weird. I would never eat this.

Made this last night and it smelled amazing. The filling thickened perfectly after simmering and the potatoes topped it off so nicely. Will definitely make again!

Lucky you 😅 I tried a similar pie once and mine stayed kinda runny—probably didn’t simmer long enough. What brand/store-bought crust did you use?

    2. 5 stars
Yes! That “thickened perfectly” part is the hardest to nail, so nice work. I love when the mashed potatoes come out golden on top—such a comfort meal.

  95. 2 stars
Kinda bland for me. I know it says ‘salt to taste’ but I feel like it needs more seasoning (maybe paprika or Worcestershire). Otherwise decent.

I think this recipe is missing something. I added some cheese on top and it totally saved it.

    1. User avatar lewis.huel43 says:

Adding cheese? Really? I think the recipe is perfect as is! More cheese might just ruin it. Why mess with a classic?

    2. User avatar Hwi Noree says:

Cheese is a great idea! I never thought about adding it to a pie, but it makes sense. It could definitely add a nice flavor. I might try that next time!

This pie was a hit at my family dinner! The flavors melded really nicely. Will definitely make it again.

I dunno, sounds kinda basic to me. Beef and potatoes? How original… 🤷‍♂️

So glad to hear that! I can’t wait to try it myself. Do you think it would taste good with cheese on top?

Low sodium broth is the move. Also, “golden brown” is kinda vague but mine got there after 28 min—pretty solid.

Beef and potato pie? Sounds kinda weird but I’ll try it. Why not?

  101. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! My family loved it! Definitely a keeper.

  102. 2 stars
The flavors are nice, but it felt a bit salty to me. I’d cut salt in half and add more later. Also, I mixed up cups and tablespoons once and it was chaos.

I don’t get why you need to pre-bake the crust? It didn’t seem to make a difference.

  104. User avatar signe.bauch says:

I’m not a huge crust person, but the pre-bake helped a lot. My pie did take closer to 35 minutes though—my oven runs hot/cold for no reason. Still worth it.

Interesting—mine always takes longer too. I’d say if it’s golden on top you’re good, but 25 minutes feels short for a thicker layer of potatoes. Did you use deep dish or regular pie pan?

    2. User avatar Barney Nikolaus says:

      5 stars
Totally agree on the pre-bake—store-bought crust can get soggy fast. And 35 minutes sounds very plausible if your oven’s being moody. Love that you adjusted for it!

This pie was a huge hit at the potluck! Everyone asked for the recipe. Will be making it again for sure!

Beef and potato? More like dough and disappointment. My pie didn’t turn out right.

Not bad at all. I thought it would be bland, but the garlic/onion helped a lot. Next time I might add carrots for more veg.

  108. 3 stars
I followed it mostly, but my sauce got kinda lumpy when I added the broth. Maybe I wasn’t stirring constantly enough. Ended up good anyway after a quick whisk, so no big deal.

    1. User avatar seymour.mayer says:

      5 stars
That sounds exactly like roux/ gravy behavior—lumps happen fast if the broth goes in too quickly. Glad a quick whisk saved it! 🙌

Not bad! But my mashed potatoes were a little gluey (probably over-mashed). Also I thought the filling would be thicker, so I cooked the broth a couple extra minutes and that fixed it.

    1. User avatar anthony.kerluke says:

Glad you figured it out! Over-mashing can definitely make potatoes a bit gluey—next time I’d mash just until smooth and stop there. Your thickening tweak sounds spot-on though.

I followed it mostly, but I burned the flour step slightly. I had to start over and was annoyed. Still tasted nice, but the texture wasn’t the same.

I’m skeptical about the “pre-bake 10 minutes” part—mine started getting too dark. Flavor was still nice though. Also I eyeballed the salt and it probably needed less with the broth.

Made this tonight—super comforting. The beef gravy thickened up perfectly after the flour + broth step. I added a pinch of thyme and it was even better. 10/10 would bake again.

Confession: I forgot to drain the fat and my filling was greasy 😭. Even so, the flavor was good. Will try again and be more careful.

This is basically shepherd’s pie in pie form. Love it. Also easy to meal prep—just reheat slices and it holds together pretty well.

Not bad, but I think 10 minutes pre-bake is maybe too short? Mine got a little soft in the middle. Next time I’ll bake the crust a bit longer.

Honestly, I used chicken instead of beef because it was all I had, and it still tasted great!

This tastes like my grandma’s kind of dinner. I don’t usually measure salt/pepper, but it still worked. The pie crust was the star for me.

  120. 2 stars
I followed it exactly and it came out… kinda bland. Next time I’m doubling pepper and maybe adding Worcestershire or something.
