Baked Tilapia with Mediterranean Salsa

February 20, 2024

Greek-style baked tilapia with Mediterranean salsa is the perfect dish when you’re craving a fresh, vibrant, and healthy meal that doesn’t compromise on flavor. This dish combines the delicate, flaky texture of tilapia with a bright, zesty salsa inspired by the Mediterranean’s best ingredients. It’s light, satisfying, and filled with wholesome flavors that make it ideal for a weeknight dinner or a special occasion.

The tilapia is simply seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and dried herbs like oregano, which are staples in Greek cuisine. The fish is then baked until perfectly tender and flaky, absorbing all the aromatic goodness from the seasoning. It’s the kind of dish that lets the natural flavors of the fish shine, without needing too many complicated ingredients.

What truly sets this dish apart is the Mediterranean salsa, which is both refreshing and full of texture. Made with diced tomatoes, cucumber, Kalamata olives, red onion, and fresh herbs like parsley and dill, the salsa is light yet packed with flavor. A drizzle of olive oil and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice ties everything together, creating a vibrant topping that complements the tilapia perfectly.

The combination of the warm, baked fish and the cool, crisp salsa creates an irresistible contrast. The olives add a briny richness that balances the sweetness of the tomatoes, while the cucumbers provide a refreshing crunch. Fresh herbs and lemon bring brightness, making each bite feel like a taste of the Mediterranean.

This dish is as healthy as it is delicious, with lean protein from the tilapia and a medley of fresh vegetables in the salsa. Serve it with a side of quinoa, couscous, or a green salad for a complete, balanced meal that feels both indulgent and nourishing. Greek-style baked tilapia with Mediterranean salsa is a wonderful way to enjoy light, healthy seafood with bold, Mediterranean flavors. It’s simple, quick, and guaranteed to be a hit at the dinner table.

I’m not a huge fish person but this was actually good. My salsa got watery though—maybe my cucumber was too juicy. I’ll pat it dry next time.

    1. User avatar delphine.block19 says:

Totally get it—watery salsa is usually the cucumber (or rinsed tomatoes). Patting the cucumber dry or salting it for a few minutes helps a ton. This looks delicious though!

  2. 2 stars
I followed it exactly and it came out bland. Maybe my oregano was old? I added lemon zest after and it helped.

  3. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! I love how fresh it tastes. My family enjoyed it too!

Looks good but I’m skeptical about 12-15 mins for all tilapia sizes. If you get thick fillets, it might not be “cooked through” in that time. Maybe mention thickness?

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—12–15 min depends a lot on fillet thickness. I’d definitely call that out (like “bake until it flakes easily, ~1/2-inch thickness = ~12 min”).

    2. User avatar dino.schuster says:

      5 stars
Good catch. Tilapia cooks fast, but thick pieces can stay a bit raw inside. Next time I’ll note “thin fillets” or include a thickness guideline.

Simple and delicious! Perfect for a quick dinner. Thank you!

  6. 5 stars
Super easy to make! My family loved it. Will make again!

That’s awesome! I love when something is both easy and delicious. What did your family like most about it?

    2. User avatar charlie.corkery30 says:

      3 stars
Really? It looks simple, but I wonder if the tilapia has enough flavor. I’ve tried other fish dishes that were bland. 😕

  7. User avatar Michael83 says:

I love Greek food! This dish is now a weekly staple for me. 🤤

  8. User avatar Death Hound says:

    2 stars
Kinda bland to me, I had to drown it in extra lemon and pepper. The salsa was better than the fish. Wouldn’t repeat exactly as written.

    1. User avatar linwood.goodwin says:

      3 stars
Mine was also kinda bland at first. I think 1 tsp oregano for 4 fillets feels light? Next time I’ll do more garlic/oregano or add a little feta to the salsa.

    2. 4 stars
I get what you mean—tilapia can be pretty mild. I usually bump the oregano and add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the marinade, plus extra lemon right before serving. Helps a lot.

  9. User avatar geoWizard says:

    5 stars
This was delicious! The fish turned out so flaky and the salsa was fresh. Definitely making this again!

  10. User avatar Frodo Baggins says:

    1 star
Total failure! I overcooked the fish and it was like rubber. Anyone got tips?

  11. User avatar eladia.spencer says:

    3 stars
How do you bake fish? Isn’t it better to fry it? But I tried this and it wasn’t too bad!

  12. User avatar Malzahar says:

    2 stars
Ugh, too much lemon!!! It was like biting into a citrus bomb. Never again! 🙁

    1. User avatar tabetha.konopelski15 says:

      4 stars
Maybe you used too much lemon juice? You can tone it down next time! I love this recipe.

  13. 5 stars
This is sooo good! The salsa adds the perfect touch. Definitely a keeper!

    1. User avatar angelo.von93 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! The salsa is what makes it pop! I also added some feta cheese on top. Yum!

  14. User avatar yong.kuhn says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but my tilapia came out a bit dry at 15 minutes. Next time I’ll check around 10-12 and pull it earlier. Salsa was awesome though—lots of crunch.

    1. User avatar Yooden Vranx says:

      5 stars
Good catch on the timing—tilapia can go from perfect to dry fast. I usually start checking at 10 minutes too. Glad the salsa still saved the day!

    2. User avatar rocky.quitzon95 says:

      4 stars
Maybe your oven runs hot? 400°F for 15 minutes feels like a lot for thin fillets. I’d try lower temp or thinner/more even fillet pieces. Salsa really is the best part though—so crunchy 😋

  15. User avatar robbi.rodriguez55 says:

    3 stars
Not sure I agree with baking the tilapia uncovered—mine dried slightly at the edges. The salsa helped a lot, but I’d probably cover with foil for the first half next time.

  16. User avatar steve_maga says:

    5 stars
This recipe was sooo good! My family loved it, especially the salsa!

  17. User avatar Bernie Pouros says:

    5 stars
This recipe is delicious! The salsa really adds flavor!

  18. 4 stars
I tried this with lemon pepper instead of oregano. It turned out good! 😋

  19. User avatar daniele.morissette says:

    4 stars
This was way better than expected. I didn’t have fresh dill so I used dried (yeah I know), and it still tasted bright. The vinegar in the salsa really pops.

  20. 4 stars
This was super easy! My kids actually ate it without complaint. Will make again!

  21. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

    5 stars
This is a great ‘weeknight’ recipe. I liked how the marinade steps are simple and the salsa is basically chop-and-mix. 10/10 for low effort, big payoff.

  22. User avatar luciano.ritchie36 says:

    3 stars
    I don’t know about tilapia… Isn’t it a bit bland? I used salmon instead.

  23. User avatar leida.waters0 says:

    4 stars
Yum! Simple and easy. I added some feta cheese on top for extra flavor! 😋

  24. User avatar antonia.boyer30 says:

Mmm, too much garlic for my taste. Anyone else feel that?

    1. 4 stars
I actually love garlic! It gives so much flavor to the dish. Maybe try using less next time or even skipping it? Just a thought!

  25. User avatar kandy.watsica says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical but wow! Fish tastes so fresh and yum!

  26. User avatar rolf.wilderman35 says:

Simple and easy to follow! Just like my mom’s recipe but with a twist. My kids loved it too. Thanks for sharing!

  27. User avatar albert.aufderhar says:

Not gonna lie, I got skeptical when I saw 12-15 minutes. Fish can be tricky, but this timing actually worked. I used a thinner fillet and it was done right on time.

    1. 5 stars
That’s reassuring! I always assume fish needs longer than that, so nice to know 12–15 minutes is legit with thinner fillets.

    2. User avatar darius.abernathy2017 says:

      3 stars
I tried this once and my timing was way off—mine turned out a bit dry. Do you think it’s more about fillet thickness than the oven temp?

  28. 2 stars
I don’t know, maybe I did something wrong? The tilapia came out kinda dry.

    1. User avatar dusti.stamm6 says:

      4 stars
Maybe try cooking it a bit less next time? Fish can get dry if overcooked.

  29. 4 stars
Not bad at all. I think 2 cloves garlic is a lot for my taste, so I’ll do 1 next time. Flavors are balanced though.

  30. User avatar kayleigh.cartwright2011 says:

    5 stars
Wow. Greek-ish flavors without the drama. My husband asked what restaurant this was from 😅

  31. User avatar Dewayne Rowe II says:

    Tilapia? More like yuck-apia! 😂 I don’t like fish.

  33. 3 stars
Not bad, but I think tilapia is kinda bland. Maybe try salmon instead?

  34. User avatar sheron.hudson89 says:

    5 stars
Loved the Mediterranean salsa. The tomatoes stayed juicy and the olives added that salty punch. Tilapia cooks fast, so I pulled it at 12 minutes—perfect flake.

  35. User avatar bobbi.treutel2005 says:

    4 stars
The flavors are honestly on point. Lemon + garlic + oregano with the cucumber/olives is a great combo. I did add a pinch of chili flakes because I like a little kick.

  36. User avatar eldridge.heathcote says:

    4 stars
Made it for my family last night. Simple and delicious but I added more garlic.

      3 stars
But like, isn’t tilapia not the best fish? I’ve heard some bad things about it. 🤔

  38. 4 stars
Yay fish! I don’t like the olives tho. But recipe easy to follow. Thanks!

  39. User avatar Frederic Rau V says:

    5 stars
This is the best tilapia recipe I’ve ever tried! Perfectly zesty and fresh! 😍

  40. User avatar lenita.barrows1968 says:

    3 stars
I wanted to like it more, but something tasted off to me. Maybe it was the olives?

  41. 5 stars
Delicious!! But I used frozen tilapia… still worked great!

  42. User avatar lynelle.zieme1951 says:

    4 stars
Nice and healthy. I used tilapia’s cousin, the flounder, because that’s what I had. Good!

  43. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    2 stars
I don’t know why you need olives in everything, it’s too salty! Next time, I’m leaving them out.

  44. User avatar andy.smitham10 says:

    4 stars
I forgot the dill, but still tasted great! Might try it with some cilantro next time.

  45. 3 stars
I forgot to buy dill and used thyme instead. Hope it’s still good!

    1. User avatar Hotblack Desiato's bodyguard says:

      2 stars
I don’t know if thyme works for fish. Dill is really different from thyme, like, what were you thinking?

    2. User avatar tomiko.wolf27 says:

      5 stars
Thyme is a great substitute! I’m sure it’ll still taste amazing. Can’t wait to try it myself!

  46. User avatar krista.collins65 says:

    5 stars
5 stars!!! So easy and fresh, like restaurant quality. My whole family went back for seconds. Definitely adding it to our weeknight rotation.

  47. User avatar evan.flatley2006 says:

Made this tonight—super fresh and not heavy. The salsa tasted like a real Mediterranean salad, and the tilapia stayed flaky (not dry). I marinated closer to 20 minutes and it was perfect. Will repeat.

  48. User avatar elden.nitzsche says:

    4 stars
What if I don’t have dill? Can I use something else?

  49. User avatar winston.rowe29 says:

    4 stars
Never cooked fish before! But this was easy to follow, thanks for the tips!

    1. 5 stars
I’m so glad you found it easy! Cooking fish can be intimidating, but once you get the hang of it, it’s super rewarding. Keep it up!

  50. 2 stars
Fishy. Used cod instead and it didn’t help. Not my favorite meal.

    1. User avatar luke.runolfsson2022 says:

      4 stars
Sorry to hear that! Cod can be different. Maybe try a different fish next time?

  51. 1 star
How do I know if tilapia is fresh? I’m new to cooking and scared of fish!

  52. User avatar Falmer Nightprowler says:

    3 stars
I tried to make this, but the tilapia turned out dry. Maybe I cooked it too long? The salsa was delicious though.

    1. User avatar danuta.davis says:

      2 stars
Dry tilapia? Isn’t it always dry? I never liked fish anyway, I prefer chicken. But hey, salsa sounds good!

    2. 4 stars
It’s easy to overcook fish! Maybe try checking it a few minutes earlier next time. Glad you liked the salsa!

  53. 5 stars
Made this tonight and it turned out super flavorful. The lemon-garlic combo is perfect, and the salsa tastes like summer. I used fresh oregano instead of dried and it was even better.

  54. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    4 stars
    Fish. Salsa. Good combo.

  55. User avatar Quincy Satterfield says:

    4 stars
The ingredient list is solid, but I felt like 1 cup tomatoes + 1/2 cup cucumber was a bit wet. I’d drain the cucumber or seed the tomatoes to keep it from pooling.

  56. User avatar earl.friesen3 says:

    5 stars
This was SO good! My family loved it, especially the salsa. Will make again!

    1. User avatar tomika.balistreri says:

      5 stars
I’m glad to hear you loved it! The salsa really does add a great touch. Did you make any changes to the recipe?

  57. User avatar Android 19 says:

    3 stars
It was ok. The salsa was a little too tangy for my taste. Maybe less vinegar?

    1. 4 stars
I guess everyone has different tastes! Maybe you could try adding some sugar to the salsa to balance it out? Just a thought!

  58. 2 stars
I think tilapia is kinda bland.. maybe try salmon? that’s better.

  59. User avatar china.schmeler says:

    5 stars
Liek this is so good! My kids even ate it with no fuss! Thanks!

  60. User avatar Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings says:

    2 stars
Not bad but kinda sour? Maybe because I used extra lemon. Also I accidentally minced the garlic too small (turned into paste) and it was strong—still edible, just loud.
