Baked Stuffed Shells

February 13, 2025

Baked stuffed shells are a beloved Italian-American dish that combines tender pasta shells with a rich and flavorful filling, all topped with melted cheese and marinara sauce. This hearty, comforting meal is perfect for family dinners, special occasions, or any time you’re craving a satisfying dish full of savory goodness. The combination of cheese, pasta, and marinara sauce makes it a timeless favorite that’s sure to please everyone at the table.

The star of baked stuffed shells is the large pasta shells, which are carefully filled with a creamy ricotta cheese mixture. The ricotta is typically combined with other cheeses like mozzarella and Parmesan, along with a blend of herbs and spices such as garlic, basil, and oregano. This mixture creates a rich, flavorful filling that complements the soft pasta shells perfectly.

Once the shells are stuffed, they’re arranged in a baking dish and smothered with marinara sauce. The sauce adds a tangy, slightly sweet contrast to the rich cheese filling and helps to keep the pasta shells moist during baking. A generous sprinkle of shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on top creates a golden, bubbly crust as the dish bakes in the oven.

Baked stuffed shells are a versatile dish that can be easily customized to suit your tastes. You can add ground beef, sausage, or vegetables to the filling for added flavor and texture. For a lighter version, you can use a combination of spinach and ricotta to create a vegetarian option that’s just as satisfying.

This dish is perfect for serving with a side of garlic bread and a simple salad, making it a complete meal that’s both comforting and indulgent. Whether you’re feeding a crowd or enjoying a cozy dinner at home, baked stuffed shells are sure to be a hit.

These are AMAZING! I made them for dinner and my whole family loved it. Will definitely be making again!

  2. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz says:

They turned out a bit mushy for me. Maybe I overcooked the shells? Not sure if I’ll try it again.

    1. User avatar Dwarven Shpere says:

      4 stars
I find that if you cook them a little less, they turn out better! Don’t give up on them! 😊

    2. User avatar Hillman Hunter says:

      2 stars
Mushy? Are you sure you cooked them right? It’s pasta, not rocket science. 😒

  3. 2 stars
I tried making these but used ricotta from the tub instead of fresh – BIG mistake! Tasted different. Next time, I’ll do it right.

  4. User avatar marcos.ward30 says:

    4 stars
Yummy! Plus easy to make. 10/10 recommend… but how many cups is 12 ounces of shells? Anyone know?

  5. 3 stars
I tried this and it turned out okay. A bit too cheesy for my tastes but my kids loved it.

  6. User avatar Siona Atreides says:

    3 stars
Why do you put an egg in there? Isn’t that for baking cakes? Seemed weird to me but still came out alright.

  7. User avatar Ms. Audrey Homenick says:

    5 stars
I can’t cook, but even I managed this! Pretty easy! Thanks for the recipe!

    1. User avatar Chi Shenlong says:

That’s awesome to hear! Cooking can be intimidating, but it’s all about following the steps. Happy you enjoyed it! 🍽️

  8. User avatar williams.hackett says:

    5 stars
Five stars. So cheesy and filling! My kids ate it all and asked for seconds. Will make again for sure.

  9. 3 stars
Mine came out a bit dry even with the extra mozzarella. Maybe my marinara was thicker? Still tasted decent, but the texture wasn’t as creamy as I hoped.

  10. User avatar Dexter Nitzsche DVM says:

    3 stars
It’s good but too much work for a weeknight dinner. Takes forever to stuff shells!

  11. User avatar timothy.volkman1986 says:

    2 stars
Not the best. I think there are too many cheeses. I prefer my pasta with meat.

  12. User avatar Margot Fenring says:

    4 stars
I added some spinach in the ricotta mix and it turned out great! 😍

    1. User avatar Tricia McMillan says:

      5 stars
That sounds delicious! 😋 I bet the spinach added a nice twist. I’ll have to try that next time!

    2. User avatar bobby.dietrich says:

      2 stars
Spinach? Seriously? I don’t think that belongs in baked shells. Just stick to the original recipe!

  13. User avatar willie.strosin36 says:

    5 stars
These shells were amazing but I ran out of cheese! Next time, I’m buying extra mozzarella just to be safe.

  14. User avatar Tawnya Kemmer says:

    5 stars
Made these last night and they came out super cheesy and comforting. The marinara soaking in a bit makes them so flavorful. Will definitely bake again.

  15. 4 stars
Never made stuffed shells before but this was easy! Will definitely make again. Happy cook here! 😊

  16. User avatar Android 18 says:

    5 stars
Simply yummy! I added some spinach to the ricotta mix, made it even healthier! 🌱

  17. User avatar Draugr Wight says:

    5 stars
These stuffed shells are my absolute favorite! So cheesy and delicious! I can’t wait to make them again. 😍

  18. User avatar bea.leannon says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe but my shells fell apart. I don’t think it should have been that hard…maybe my pasta was too old?

    1. 4 stars
I know the struggle! Sometimes it’s tricky to get the shells just right. Maybe try using fresher pasta next time? It really makes a difference!

    2. User avatar leonel.okuneva says:

      3 stars
Old pasta? Nah, could be the way you cooked them. Did you let them cool a bit before filling? That might help hold them together better!

  19. 5 stars
SO GOOD!! My kids loved it! Gonna make it again this weekend!

  20. User avatar Mrs. Lin Kemmer says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! I think 20 shells was a little optimistic though, some broke on me. Next time I’ll cook them a minute less so they don’t get too soft while filling.

  21. 4 stars
Yum! I added some ground beef to the filling for extra flavor and it was a hit! Will definitely make this again.

  22. User avatar olene.gaylord8 says:

    1 star
No way this is as good as it looks, I mean really?? How can it be?!

  23. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    3 stars
I’m not sure about the 9×13 sauce amount—mine seemed thicker than the photos I’ve seen online. Also, 25 minutes with foil felt short in my oven, so I added a few more minutes uncovered.

    1. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

      5 stars
Yeah, the sauce amount is the one thing I’ve also noticed. 2 cups can look “thin” in photos, but ovens and marinara thickness vary a lot. I usually add a little extra if the dish looks dry when I spoon it in.

  24. User avatar darron.zieme says:

    3 stars
I wasn’t really sure about using egg in the filling. Is there a way to do it without it? Asking for a friend!

  25. User avatar yolonda.mills35 says:

    2 stars
Just okay. I’ve had better stuffed shells at an Italian restaurant. Won’t make this again.

  26. User avatar trenton.braun1960 says:

    5 stars
This is like restaurant-level baked shells! I even meal-prepped leftovers and they reheated super well in the microwave (covered).

    1. 4 stars
I tried something similar but my shells turned out kinda hard in the middle. Did you cook them to al dente like the recipe says? Maybe I under-drained.

    2. User avatar donna.davis says:

      5 stars
Yes!! The covered microwave reheat is the key—I’m glad it held up for you. Restaurant vibes for sure 🙌

  27. User avatar Lunkwill and Fook says:

    5 stars
Easy and actually makes the kitchen smell amazing. I used homemade sauce and it made a big difference. Family asked for seconds.

  28. User avatar Arnoldo Boyer DVM says:

    2 stars
Meh. The shells stuck to the dish even with my spray, and the filling was kinda thick like paste. Tasted okay though.

  29. User avatar renetta.nienow says:

    4 stars
I accidentally used regular pasta shells and they were harder to fill (obviously). Still, the cheese mixture was great. Definitely recommend jumbo shells.

  30. User avatar Storm Atronach says:

    4 stars
Worst part was stuffing them—so messy lol. But once baked, wow. The edges got a little crispy and the filling stayed creamy. I’d give 4 stars if it was less work.

  31. 5 stars
Made these for dinner and they turned out super comforting. The ricotta filling stayed nice and creamy, and the bubbly cheese on top is exactly what you want. I might add a pinch of garlic next time but honestly great as-is.

    1. 5 stars
These sound perfect for weeknights—comforting and cheesy is my love language 😄 The ricotta staying creamy is the best part!

  32. User avatar Théoden says:

    2 stars
I don’t know what I did wrong, but mine came out super dry. Maybe I overbaked it? 🤔

  33. User avatar jerrell.greenfelder30 says:

    1 star
Food good, but too much work for me. Next time I’ll just buy frozen ones.

    1. User avatar James Schumm says:

      4 stars
Totally get that! Cooking can be a lot of effort. But these stuffed shells are soooo good! Maybe try it once for the experience?

    2. User avatar issac.wilderman54 says:

      3 stars
Frozen isn’t the same, man! You miss out on the yumminess of fresh cheese and all that. Just give it a shot!

  34. User avatar rosia.abshire44 says:

    3 stars
Honestly, wasn’t that impressed. The ricotta is too bland for me. Maybe add some garlic?

    1. User avatar violeta.crist14 says:

      5 stars
I think garlic would be a great addition! I always add it to my ricotta mix for more flavor. Don’t give up on this recipe yet!

  35. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

    5 stars
This was amazing! I added some spinach and it was still to die for! Yummm!!!

  36. 3 stars
I followed the recipe exactly, but I found it a bit bland. Maybe more seasoning next time?

  37. User avatar Gail Andrews says:

    5 stars
Love baked stuffed shells. This recipe gives a nice balance between ricotta and marinara. I also added chopped spinach and it made it feel restaurant-level.

  38. User avatar anamaria.spencer2018 says:

    5 stars
These turned out so comforting! The shells were perfectly stuffed and the sauce stayed nice and flavorful. I added a little extra garlic to the marinara and it was a hit.

  39. User avatar corie.wintheiser says:

    2 stars
Not sure about this. 15 oz ricotta for 20 shells seems like a lot and it felt heavy. Also, I ran out of marinara after covering—maybe I’m bad at measuring lol.

  40. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    4 stars
How many servings does this make? I made half but I could eat the whole thing by myself!

    1. 5 stars
This recipe makes about 4 servings if you fill each shell well! It sounds so yummy, I can understand wanting to eat it all yourself!

  41. User avatar waylon.mitchell2007 says:

    2 stars
This recipe is a lie! It says 20 shells but I only had 18. What gives? 🤨

    1. 4 stars
I’ve had that happen too! Maybe the shells were bigger than they should be? 🤷‍♂️

  42. User avatar derick.ohara says:

    2 stars
Not great. The shells fell apart, and the sauce was too salty for my liking. Would not recommend.

  43. User avatar brian.farrell91 says:

    5 stars
These shells came out amazing! Such a hit at dinner! 🎉

  44. 5 stars
These are absolutely delicious! The flavors were perfect, and my whole family loved them.

    1. 5 stars
So glad to hear that! They really are a family favorite. Did you.change anything in the recipe?

    2. User avatar glayds.reinger71 says:

      2 stars
I found them kinda bland. Maybe need more spices or something? Not sure I would make again.

  45. User avatar cruz.herman1995 says:

    5 stars
    wow

  46. 2 stars
I dunno, just didn’t seem that special. Like, shells are just shells.

    1. User avatar robert.funk41 says:

      4 stars
Honestly, I think stuffed shells have a lot more potential than just being shells. The flavors in this recipe sound amazing! Give it another try with some spices or veggies.

  47. User avatar lionel.murray62 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but mine came out a little salty. Next time I’ll reduce the salt or taste the ricotta mix first. Still, the cheese pull was awesome.

    1. 5 stars
Good call on tasting the ricotta mix first—salt can definitely sneak up on you, especially with store-bought marinara and parmesan. Next time I’d start with a half tsp salt and adjust after mixing.

  48. User avatar lionel.brakus says:

    4 stars
So easy to make! I accidentally used penne instead of shells, but it still turned out great! 😂

    1. User avatar simon.monahan1999 says:

      5 stars
Glad to hear it still turned out well! Pasta’s pretty forgiving. 😂

    2. 3 stars
Penne? Really? That ain’t the same, but if it worked, why not? 🤷‍♂️

  49. User avatar Magrathean sperm whale says:

    3 stars
Too much cheese for me, I think! Next time I’ll reduce it. Cheese overload lol.

  50. 4 stars
Sounds yummy but 9×13 pan with 20 shells felt tight. I ended up with extra shells anyway and had to fit them like a Tetris game 😅

  51. 3 stars
Not gonna lie, it felt a little salty for me with 1 tsp salt plus parmesan. I’d reduce salt next time or use low-sodium ricotta.

  52. 5 stars
Made these last night—so comforting. I used homemade marinara and didn’t skimp on the extra mozzarella. The shells held together way better than I expected.

  53. User avatar lionel.hettinger62 says:

    5 stars
These stuffed shells are incredible! I loved the cheesy filling. Will definitely make again!

  54. 3 stars
I prefer penne pasta instead of shells. Just a personal preference! 🥲

    1. User avatar klara.reynolds says:

      3 stars
I dunno, penne just seems so boring compared to these big shells! They hold more stuff, right?

    2. User avatar dionne.rau1955 says:

      5 stars
Penne is good too! I used it last week, but these shells are the best for stuffing! 😋

  55. User avatar Heimerdinger says:

    3 stars
Flavor is solid, but 15 oz ricotta felt like a lot and I had filling left over. Also I may have used slightly too much sauce—still yummy though.

  56. User avatar rudolph.rohan43 says:

    5 stars
Followed it exactly and it worked first try. I like that it’s not overly fussy—just bake and enjoy. Next time I’ll toast the top for a few more minutes for extra browning.

  57. User avatar adam.sporer says:

    2 stars
Not bad, but it felt kinda salty for my taste. I might cut the salt in half next time. Also I think 1 egg was enough but the filling could’ve used a bit more parsley.

  58. User avatar layne.langworth6 says:

    4 stars
Solid recipe, but I had to bake about 15 extra minutes to get them fully bubbly. Next time I’ll make sure the shells aren’t too undercooked. Still delicious.

  59. 2 stars
375° seems right… but I accidentally baked for 45 minutes cuz I got distracted. Still edible, kinda dry. Would not recommend my mistake.

    1. 2 stars
Oh no 😅 375°F for 25 minutes is already pretty spot-on—45 is definitely what would dry them out. Next time just add a little extra sauce so they don’t get crusty.

  60. User avatar jefferey.mcdermott52 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about using store-bought marinara, but I tried it and it was fine. Maybe it depends on the brand—mine was just average at first but baked down nicely.

  61. 4 stars
I was skeptical about baking time, but 25 min covered + 10 uncovered was perfect. Next time I’ll add more parmesan because I love it.

  62. User avatar misti.shields67 says:

    5 stars
    so easy. yum!

    1. User avatar blair.doyle7 says:

      3 stars
“So easy” for real? I feel like mine always turns out watery… maybe I underbaked? Any tips? Also I used whole milk ricotta once and it was kinda weird.

    2. User avatar Max Quordlepleen says:

      5 stars
Right?! I love when stuffed shells are actually doable. The marinara + cheese combo is perfection 😍

  63. User avatar izetta.langosh7 says:

    1 star
1/2 cup parmesan felt way too little to me, like where’s the flavor? I added more and it still tasted kinda bland. Won’t make again as written.

  64. User avatar alene.bruen says:

    3 stars
Mine came out a little watery. I think my marinara was too thin. Still tasty, just needed longer in the oven or thicker sauce.

  65. User avatar osvaldo.legros1980 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I think 25 minutes covered was a bit short for my oven. The filling was warm, but not super hot all the way through. Still tasty though.

  66. User avatar anja.kling68 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is awesome! So cheesy and delicious. My family loved it! 😍

    1. 5 stars
So glad to hear that! It’s a family favorite at my house too! 😄

  67. User avatar russ.hagenes9 says:

    2 stars
I tried it and honestly it was kinda bland. I know it has salt and pepper but I think it needs more seasoning—like Italian seasoning or chili flakes. My family said it needed “something.”

  68. User avatar Gail Andrews says:

    3 stars
I followed it, but my cheese layer didn’t get very bubbly—more like just melted. Maybe I should’ve used more mozzarella on top or cooked a bit longer.

  69. User avatar susannah.corkery2016 says:

    3 stars
The flavor is solid but the texture was meh—mine didn’t get that bubbly cheese crust. I think I should’ve used more mozzarella on top.

  70. User avatar yahaira.rau3 says:

    5 stars
These shells turned out so creamy inside—exactly what I wanted. I used homemade marinara and it really made a difference. The bake time was spot on too.

  71. 3 stars
I followed the recipe and it worked… mostly. My shells were a bit overcooked because my package said 10 min but I think it needed less. But overall tasty and comforting.

    1. User avatar Elinore Kuvalis II says:

      3 stars
Mine usually needs like 15 min total for the shells? So if yours was overcooked, maybe you didn’t drain soon enough or the water was boiling hard the whole time. Either way, sounds good though.

    2. User avatar al.pfeffer94 says:

      5 stars
Ugh I hate when the package cook time lies 😅 Next time I’d start checking the shells a minute or two early—“al dente” is the key. Glad it still came out tasty!

  72. 4 stars
Really good flavor, but my shells tore a bit when I tried to fill them. Next time I’ll undercook by like 1 minute and let them cool more before stuffing.

  73. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about “jumbo shells” like will they actually fit right? Mine were a little hard to stuff but the flavor was great. Sauce-to-cheese ratio felt spot on.

  74. User avatar lottie.murphy58 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid recipe. I followed it mostly, but my shells were a little harder to manage when filling—maybe I cooked them just a tiny bit too al dente. Still tasted delicious with the marinara layer.

    1. User avatar shera.shanahan65 says:

      4 stars
Hmm, I had the same issue before. Next time I’ll par-cook them a minute less? Or maybe rinse them? Also I wonder if jumbo shells vary a lot by brand.

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree—when the shells are even slightly too al dente, they fight back during filling 😂 Love that you still got great flavor with the marinara layer though!

  75. User avatar scott.stanton46 says:

    5 stars
These turned out amazing—super comforting and cheesy. I used homemade marinara and it really made a difference. Definitely making again!

    1. 4 stars
I made these once but my shells tore up—maybe I cooked them too long? What cook time did you use for the al dente part?

    2. User avatar Galaxia Woonbeam says:

      5 stars
Yesss! Homemade marinara really is the secret—glad it worked out that well. Thanks for sharing!

  76. User avatar Frostbite Spider says:

    2 stars
This is okay but honestly I think ricotta shells are overrated. Too much work for what is basically pasta + cheese.

  77. User avatar Feyd-Rautha Rabban says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but my shells took a little longer than package says to get al dente—maybe my brand. Still turned out great, just watch the timing.

  78. User avatar vincenza.ward16 says:

    4 stars
The prep is time consuming, not gonna lie. Stuffing 20 shells takes me forever, lol. But the end result is worth it.

    1. User avatar angela.metz1999 says:

      3 stars
Honestly I don’t get why people struggle with this—just dump the ricotta in between like lasagna layers and bake. Way faster. Still tastes good tho (kinda).

    2. 5 stars
Omg yes 😂 The filling takes forever. I’m always like “I’ll just do a few” and then suddenly it’s been an hour. But when it comes out bubbling it’s totally worth the effort!

  79. User avatar tawanna.gorczany says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about the egg in the ricotta. It actually helped the filling set though—nice texture. Would make again.

  80. User avatar darrell.hand says:

    3 stars
Not sure about baking time—25 min under foil felt short and my cheese wasn’t really bubbly until later. Also I sprinkled parmesan on top, which I know you didn’t say, but it helped.

  81. User avatar Brand-shei says:

    5 stars
Made these last night—super comforting and the shells actually held up. I used homemade marinara and it tasted restaurant-y. Would definitely make again!

  82. User avatar margarett.tromp58 says:

    4 stars
The flavor is good, but wow, stuffing 20 shells is a lot of work 😅. If you have patience, it’s worth it. I used cottage cheese once before and it was worse, so ricotta really matters here.

  83. User avatar dinah.bergnaum says:

    4 stars
The prep is a bit tedious stuffing all those shells, but the payoff is real. My kid requested them again, so that’s saying something.

  84. User avatar julene.williamson76 says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, mine turned out kinda watery. I think my marinara was too thin and I didn’t let it reduce. Taste was okay but texture was meh.

    1. 4 stars
Ugh, I’m sorry—watery stuffed shells are the worst. I’ve had that happen when the marinara doesn’t reduce. Next time, simmer the sauce 5–10 minutes before you pour it in, and make sure your shells are drained really well (al dente + no extra water). Also double-check that you’re not over-pouring the sauce at step 4/6—mine get looser fast.

  85. User avatar tristan.macejkovic31 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly but it tasted kinda bland to me. Maybe I was out of fresh pepper? I added garlic powder next time and it fixed it.
