Spicy Black Bean and Mango Burritos

August 9, 2023

If you’re in the mood for something bold, flavorful, and just a little unexpected, look no further than Spicy Black Bean and Mango Burritos. This dish is a celebration of contrasts, blending the smoky heat of seasoned black beans with the tropical sweetness of ripe mango. It’s the kind of combination that surprises you in the best way possible, creating a burrito that’s vibrant, satisfying, and bursting with fresh flavor.

Black beans form the hearty base of this dish. They’re seasoned with spices like cumin, chili powder, and a touch of paprika to bring depth and just enough heat. These beans aren’t just filling, they’re rich in protein and fiber, making the burrito feel substantial without relying on meat. When paired with juicy mango chunks, each bite becomes a dance between spicy and sweet, earthy and fruity.

Wrapped in a warm tortilla, this burrito also makes room for other textures and flavors. You might add a scoop of cilantro-lime rice for brightness, a smear of smashed avocado for creaminess, or a handful of shredded lettuce for crunch. A little crumbled feta or cotija cheese can bring in a salty tang that ties it all together, or you can keep it completely vegan and let the natural flavors shine on their own.

What really makes this burrito stand out is its versatility. It’s ideal for meal prep, quick lunches, or a no-fuss dinner. You can even serve it as a bowl if you’re skipping tortillas. It’s easily adaptable for different diets, and the ingredients are accessible year-round.

Spicy Black Bean and Mango Burritos are more than just a meal. They’re a reminder that the best food often comes from playing with contrasts and thinking outside the usual flavor profiles. The heat of the beans and the sweetness of the mango create a memorable combination that keeps you coming back for more. Whether you’re new to the sweet-and-spicy game or a longtime fan, this burrito is sure to earn a spot in your weekly rotation.

Absolutely delicious! The mango adds such a unique flavor. Will make again for sure!

  2. 2 stars
Honestly, this tasted like a salad in tortilla form. Still good, just not “burrito” enough for me. Needs cheese or something.

  3. 4 stars
Surprisingly tasty for something so simple. The cook time felt a bit short though—my peppers still had a little crunch after 5 min, so I went closer to 8. Still great.

  4. User avatar marc.bednar2007 says:

I was skeptical at first, but these were surprisingly good! A bit spicy, but in a good way. Will try adding avocado next time.

    1. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

      5 stars
I agree! These burritos turned out way better than I expected too. Spicy is the way to go! 😊

  5. User avatar Mystic Gohan says:

    4 stars
Really liked the flavor balance, but my mixture was a bit watery since my mango was extra juicy. Still tasty though—just simmered it longer next time.

  6. 3 stars
Not enough spice for me—like I could barely taste the chili powder. I bumped it up and added jalapeño. Now it’s actually spicy.

  7. User avatar janise.steuber2007 says:

Whole wheat tortillas can be tough to roll without cracking. I warmed mine longer and that helped. Also, chopping the onion/cilantro super fine makes it nicer.

I was skeptical about adding mango to burritos but they turned out surprisingly good! Still think it’s a weird combo tho.

    1. 5 stars
I used to think mango in a burrito was wild too, but now I love it! Give it a try with avocado next time.

  9. 3 stars
I followed it exactly and my beans didn’t really “meld” in 5–7 minutes—felt like everything just warmed up. Maybe my skillet runs cold?

  10. User avatar ellena.jones83 says:

Could someone tell me what cumin is? My burritos didn’t taste like this, maybe I forgot it. I used taco seasoning instead.

    1. User avatar romeo.bosco says:

      5 stars
Cumin is a spice that adds a warm, earthy flavor! It’s probably why your burritos didn’t taste right without it. Taco seasoning can be different.

  11. 2 stars
I’m not sure about the mango. Tastes kinda like salsa meets breakfast… in a weird way. Still ate it though lol.

  12. User avatar jan.bogisich89 says:

    5 stars
Wow, the mango with the chili powder is a really nice combo. Tastes like restaurant food but way cheaper—will make again for sure.

    1. User avatar Effrafax of Wug says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—mango + chili is such a good sweet/heat balance. I made these once and couldn’t stop thinking about them. Definitely on repeat for me too!

  13. User avatar venessa.labadie82 says:

    5 stars
Wow, the smoked paprika makes such a difference. Also, the cilantro at the end is clutch—so fresh.

    1. 5 stars
Yes! Smoked paprika is the secret weapon. I add a tiny bit extra sometimes and it still works great.

    2. User avatar penney.hayes17 says:

      4 stars
Haha cilantro clutch is right. I used dried once and it was… not the same. Fresh makes the whole thing pop.

  14. User avatar Mimi Shields says:

    2 stars
Kinda weird sweet + bean thing… but I ate it anyway lol. Won’t become a staple, but not bad.

  15. User avatar herma.cole78 says:

    4 stars
Yummm! I added a little avocado and it was perfect. Gonna serve these at my next cookout!

  16. User avatar grasshopper says:

    5 stars
Best burrito ever! So fresh and full of flavor! I added a little avocado too. Yummy!

  17. 2 stars
1 cup beans? That seems low for 4 burritos. I had to add extra beans (and maybe corn) to make it feel filling. The spices are solid, just adjust portions.

  18. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    3 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly, but the spice level was kinda mild for me. I would double the chili powder (or add jalapeño).

  19. User avatar nancie.littel56 says:

    2 stars
I dunno… mango in burritos? Sounds weird. The beans better not be mushy!

    1. User avatar Ayma Moron says:

      5 stars
I was skeptical too at first, but the sweet mango actually balances out the spicy beans. Give it a try!

    2. 2 stars
Mango? In burritos? Nah, that sounds like a mess! Just stick with classic fillings, ugh.

  20. User avatar Marcellus Bernier says:

    3 stars
The instructions are kinda basic (like, how hot is medium? lol). Also, do the beans need to be cooked first? I used canned and it came out fine, but I wish that was clearer.

  21. 5 stars
These burritos are AMAZING! I never thought black beans and mango would go so well together! 5 stars!

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! The flavors are just out of this world. I’ve made them twice already! 🥳

  22. 5 stars
These were surprisingly good—sweet mango with the chili heat is a great combo. I added a squeeze of lime and it really popped.

    1. User avatar Dr. Maurice Crooks says:

      5 stars
Yes!! The mango + chili combo is legit. I like to add a little lime too—makes it taste way fresher. Great tip on popping the flavor.

    2. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

      2 stars
Sounds tasty, but I’m not sure about mixing mango with black beans… seems kinda weird to me 😅 Like, won’t it get watery? I’d try it with less mango.

  23. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about putting fruit in burritos, but it actually works. My picky kid ate two!

  24. User avatar trevor.dicki says:

    5 stars
Tried these tonight—so fresh from the mango but still spicy from the chili. The smoked paprika is the secret sauce. Will make again!

    1. 5 stars
Love that combo—mango + chili is such a vibe. Glad the smoked paprika pulled it all together for you!

  25. User avatar dolly.zemlak12 says:

    2 stars
Didn’t really like it, too many flavors clashing. I thought it was supposed to be spicy! Just didn’t hit the spot.

  26. User avatar henry.tremblay31 says:

    3 stars
Way too much cumin for my taste. The recipe is solid, but I’d cut it down and maybe add some cheese or sour cream to mellow it out.

  27. User avatar melvin.walter43 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! My kids ate it, so that’s a win. I omitted the onions though… they always complain about that.

  28. User avatar Storm Atronach says:

    5 stars
Spicy! Hot hot hot! My mouth is on fire, but I can’t stop eating. Love it!

  29. User avatar miranda.lebsack71 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get it—mango + beans feels like salad vibes. Taste was okay, but I’d rather do classic burrito filling.

  30. User avatar Flame Atronach says:

    4 stars
Good quick meal, but I thought 5-7 minutes wasn’t quite enough to soften everything fully. I cooked mine a bit longer and it improved a lot.

  31. User avatar Ms. Jamey Stamm says:

    5 stars
    Delish!

  32. 4 stars
My tortillas cracked when I rolled them. Maybe I warmed them too hot/too fast. Fixing that will make this a 5-star.

  33. User avatar sherill.mills says:

    5 stars
This tastes like restaurant food. Also my kids ate it and didn’t complain (rare!).

  34. User avatar gayle.shields86 says:

    3 stars
I used canned mango (oops) and it turned out kinda watery. However, the spice blend saved it. Fresh mango next time for sure.

  35. 4 stars
Pretty tasty! I added a squeeze of lime at the end and it brightened everything up. The cumin and smoked paprika are doing work here.

  36. User avatar sammy.wisozk60 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about mango in burritos, but it actually worked. My kids ate them without complaining (rare!).

    1. User avatar Mystic Gohan says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome—mango in a burrito sounds weird at first but it makes sense with the black beans and chili. Also “kids ate without complaining” is basically the highest approval rating 😂

  37. 3 stars
I used black eyed peas instead, because I didn’t have black beans. Still turned out okay, but not the same I guess.

  38. 4 stars
Pretty tasty, though mine turned out a bit watery because my mango was super juicy. Next time I’ll drain/salt the mango lightly before mixing. Still worth it.

  39. User avatar georgann.lebsack says:

    4 stars
Easy and fast. I used canned beans to save time and it still worked. Next time I might add corn or a little cheese for extra texture.

  40. User avatar Super Saiyan 2 Vegeta says:

    2 stars
I don’t like beans much, but my family enjoyed these. I just picked the mango out. Good for them, I guess…

  41. User avatar merry.ruecker44 says:

    4 stars
Yum! I added some avocado and it was delicious. Made it for my friends and they loved it too!

  42. User avatar irwin.nitzsche says:

    2 stars
I tried this but it was way too spicy for me. My kids didn’t like it at all. Maybe use less chili powder next time?

  43. User avatar aiko.farrell24 says:

    3 stars
Idk man, I don’t trust beans in wraps. Sounds weird to me. But my friend loves it. I give it 3.

  44. 5 stars
These burritos are a game changer! So fresh and colorful. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar junior.lueilwitz54 says:

      2 stars
I dunno. Black beans and mango? Sounds kinda weird to me. Are you sure it’s not too sweet?

    2. User avatar catharine.vandervort says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! These burritos are so good. I added some avocado to mine and it was even better! 🍴

  45. 5 stars
These burritos are delicious! The sweet mango pairs perfectly with the spicy black beans. Will make again!

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! The mango adds such a nice twist. I’m gonna try it with some avocado next time!

  46. User avatar darius.pfeffer55 says:

    2 stars
1 cup beans is not enough for 4 tortillas imo. I ended up with extra veggies but not enough filling, lol. Could’ve used more beans.

  47. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    5 stars
I was skeptical about mango in burritos but wow. The cumin + smoked paprika gives it that cozy flavor. Great weeknight meal.

    1. 5 stars
Totally with you—mango sounds weird until you try it. The smoked paprika makes it feel like restaurant-level. 😋

  48. 4 stars
Black beans + mango sounds weird but I was surprised—in a good way. I’ll probably add lime juice next time though.

    1. 5 stars
Yes! The lime is the missing piece—brightens the mango and makes the spices pop. I always add a squeeze right before rolling.

  49. User avatar hassan.casper14 says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, I thought it would be weird. But I don’t like mango so much… mine turned out okay i guess? Like, it’s spicy but sweet-ish.

  50. User avatar gladys.johnston1955 says:

    3 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly, but mine was a bit bland. Next time I’ll double the salt or add some hot sauce. Still tasty though.

  51. 4 stars
The ingredient list looks solid, but 5-7 minutes feels short for “melting flavors.” I cooked mine closer to 10 and it tasted better.

    1. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

      5 stars
I agree—5-7 minutes is way too fast. I did about 10 minutes too and the mango and spices actually blended instead of tasting separate.

    2. User avatar fidel.anderson says:

      4 stars
Hmm I tried 5-7 and it was ok? Maybe my pan was hotter. The flavor was good but my onions still had a bit crunch, so next time I’ll go longer.

  52. 5 stars
These came out super fresh and bright—mango with the cumin/chili is such a good combo. I added a squeeze of lime and it totally leveled it up. Will make again!

  53. User avatar sherwood.morar1974 says:

    5 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about mango in burritos, but the balance is actually perfect. Spices are right on, and the filling smells amazing.

    1. User avatar nelida.hodkiewicz68 says:

      5 stars
I was skeptical too, but mango in these just works—sweet + spicy is such a good combo. I added a squeeze of lime and it smelled even better.

    2. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

      3 stars
Man… mango in burritos sounds weird tho lol. I tried it anyway and it was okay? Like, the flavor’s good but my tortillas tore a bit when I rolled them. Next time I’ll warm longer.

  54. User avatar Santo Effertz says:

    4 stars
I don’t know about the spices, but my kids loved it. It was easy and quick to make!

  55. User avatar coreen.heathcote1984 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about fruit in savory stuff… but wow, it actually works. The mango sweetness balances the chili. Pleasantly surprised.

    1. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      5 stars
Right?? I was in the same boat—fruit + spice sounds weird—but mango really levels it out. I usually cut the chili a bit less, though… unless you want it to punch you 😄

  56. User avatar shannon.dach9 says:

    3 stars
Good flavor, but mine turned out a bit watery—maybe my mango was too juicy. I’ll dice it smaller and pat it dry next time.

    1. User avatar lindsey.adams says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—mango can make it watery if it’s extra juicy. Dicing smaller and patting dry is a great fix. You could also simmer the filling a minute or two longer to cook off extra moisture.

  57. User avatar jared.schoen says:

    3 stars
Not bad but a bit too much cumin for my taste. Next time I might cut that down. Overall, a decent recipe.

  58. User avatar jimmie.dietrich0 says:

    4 stars
First time cooking with mango. It was a bit hard to chop. But the taste was nice! Think I messed up measuring the spices though.

    1. User avatar King Zora says:

      5 stars
Chopping mango can be tricky! Maybe try a ripe one next time, they’re easier to work with. Glad you enjoyed the taste though! 😋

    2. User avatar von.conroy39 says:

      3 stars
Spices are hard, lol! But don’t worry, it’s all about trying. Next time measure better or just eyeball it, that’s what I do!

  59. User avatar noel.runolfsson29 says:

    5 stars
Super easy and I like that it’s mostly pantry + fresh produce. I ate two and didn’t regret it. Great weeknight dinner.

  60. User avatar doretta.daniel12 says:

    4 stars
Easy and fresh. Whole wheat tortillas worked great. I used green cilantro stems too (don’t hate)—they added flavor.
