Sangria Recipe

November 28, 2024

This Sangria recipe is a refreshing, fruity cocktail recipe that’s perfect for warm-weather gatherings, backyard barbecues, or relaxing evenings with friends. This classic Spanish drink blends wine with fresh fruit, a touch of sweetness, and a splash of something fizzy, creating a vibrant beverage that’s as beautiful as it is delicious.

The base of sangria is traditionally a bottle of red wine, typically something dry and medium-bodied like Tempranillo, Garnacha, or Merlot. The wine is combined with a variety of sliced fresh fruits – common choices include oranges, lemons, limes, apples, and berries. These fruits infuse the wine with their natural sweetness and vibrant flavors as it chills.

To balance the acidity of the wine and add a hint of sweetness, a little sugar, honey, or simple syrup is stirred in. Many recipes also include a splash of brandy, which deepens the flavor and adds a bit of warmth. For a lighter twist, you can substitute the brandy with orange liqueur like Cointreau or Grand Marnier.

Just before serving, sangria is topped off with a splash of club soda, lemon-lime soda, or sparkling water to add a touch of effervescence. This final step brightens the drink and makes it incredibly refreshing.

Sangria recipe is endlessly customizable. Swap red wine for white to create a crisp white sangria, or use rosé for a lighter, fruitier variation. Tropical fruits like pineapple and mango, or herbs like mint and basil, can be added for a creative twist.

Serve sangria over plenty of ice in a large pitcher or punch bowl, letting the fruit float beautifully on top. It pairs wonderfully with tapas, grilled meats, seafood, or simple cheese and charcuterie boards.

Sweet, tangy, and beautifully colorful, sangria is the ultimate crowd-pleaser. It is easy to make ahead, perfect for sharing, and guaranteed to bring a festive touch to any gathering.

This sangria recipe is super easy and delicious! Perfect for summer parties. I made it for my friends and everyone loved it!

    1. User avatar darcie.bartell says:

      5 stars
I’m glad it turned out well for you! Sangria is definitely a crowd pleaser. 🍹

  2. 2 stars
I had a problem with the taste. Maybe too much brandy.

  3. User avatar hobert.gleason says:

    3 stars
Mine tasted a little too boozy even after 2 hours. Next time I’ll reduce the brandy a bit or use less sugar.

  4. 4 stars
Simple enough, and the citrus combo is spot on. I did add a little extra sugar because my oranges were kinda tart, but overall easy win.

  5. User avatar rosario.gibson says:

    5 stars
The club soda tip is perfect. I added it right before pouring and it stayed fizzy longer than when I’ve rushed in the past.

  6. User avatar dalene.walker says:

    4 stars
Perfect for a party! Everyone loved it! Will definitely make again.

  7. 3 stars
Mine turned out a bit too sour even though I used fresh orange juice. Maybe my oranges were small? Next time I’ll add a touch more sugar or use sweeter wine.

  8. User avatar son.hessel70 says:

Yummy!! Perfect for hot summer days. 🍊🍋💖

Best sangria I’ve ever made. Thanks for sharing! The sugar makes a big difference.

  10. 1 star
I’m not sure about this, is it really sangria without using fruit-flavored vodka? 🤷‍♂️

  11. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    5 stars
Absolutely loved this! Perfect for summer parties. Will make again for sure!

  12. User avatar lourdes.kessler says:

    5 stars
Tried this for a small get-together—so refreshing! The orange juice + citrus slices make it taste way more “bright” than the usual sangria I’ve had. I added the club soda and it was perfect.

  13. User avatar fletcher.robel says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I think it needed more fruit. Maybe some berries? Just a suggestion!

  14. User avatar greg.jacobson says:

    3 stars
I tried this but used white wine instead! Didn’t taste as good. Maybe stick to red? 🤔

  15. User avatar Pizpot Gargravarr says:

    4 stars
I left out the sugar and it still tasted great! A little healthier too. 😅

  16. 3 stars
Hmm, I think white wine is better for sangria… But this was okay.

  17. User avatar Meriadoc Brandybuck says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about putting lemon and lime in the same batch, but it works. The balance is surprisingly nice. I served it with lots of ice and the flavors stayed strong.

  18. User avatar frances.murazik40 says:

    2 stars
This is not real sangria… where’s the fruit slices?

    1. User avatar arden.moore2006 says:

      4 stars
Actually, there are fruit slices in the recipe! Orange, lemon, and lime. You should check again.

    2. User avatar ahmed.stark43 says:

      3 stars
Who needs fruit slices? I like it simple. Just give me the wine!

  19. User avatar zada.jones82 says:

    4 stars
I used a sweet-ish red wine and honestly it still worked, but I’d probably stick to dry like the recipe says. The orange juice + citrus is a great combo.

  20. User avatar Death Hound says:

    5 stars
This sangria recipe is a game changer! So refreshing and perfect for summer BBQs!

    1. User avatar Gail Andrews says:

      3 stars
I’m not sure about the sugar though. Isn’t it sweet enough with the juice? I prefer less sweetness.

    2. User avatar Thalassa says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! This sangria looks so delicious 😍. Can’t wait to try it at my next BBQ!

  21. 3 stars
I think it needs more sweetness—mine tasted a bit tart, probably because my wine wasn’t as sweet as expected. Still good though, just adjust the sugar to taste.

    1. 5 stars
Totally—dry red wine can make sangria taste way more tart. I usually add a splash more sugar or even a little honey syrup and it’s perfect.

  22. 3 stars
This was alright but a bit too sweet for my taste. I think I prefer a more traditional recipe.

  23. User avatar genie.bernier1984 says:

    2 stars
Way too much sugar! I thought it would be sweeter with the orange juice and all. Next time I’ll skip the sugar.

    1. User avatar oscar.lueilwitz96 says:

      4 stars
I actually love the sweetness! But if you think it’s too much, skipping the sugar sounds smart. Everyone has their taste, right?

  24. User avatar brent.nikolaus9 says:

    5 stars
Sangria is my favorite drink! This recipe is a winner, I added strawberries too and it was so good.

  25. User avatar andreas.wehner says:

    3 stars
Tried it exactly as written and it was good, not amazing. Maybe my wine was too sweet? Still, the smell while it chills is amazing.

  26. User avatar peter.feeney0 says:

    4 stars
I used white wine instead. It’s delish! Highly recommend trying. 🌟

    1. User avatar Madam Aroma says:

      4 stars
White wine, huh? That’s a different take! 😄 Might have to give it a shot if I ever run out of red.

  27. User avatar joe_banana says:

    4 stars
I used white wine instead of red and it was still pretty good. Just a lil different.

  28. User avatar genoveva.kunze1984 says:

    2 stars
Sounds fancy, but can I just use any wine? Doesn’t have to be dry, right?

  29. User avatar edwardo.durgan20 says:

    3 stars
Sangria in Spain is different! You should use more fruits.

  30. User avatar kennith.green7 says:

    4 stars
Honestly easy and tastes fancy. I like that it doesn’t call for a bunch of complicated stuff—just wine, citrus, and time.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—this sounds way less fussy than the fancy restaurant versions. Two hours is perfect too. 🍊🍋

    2. User avatar lidia.simonis says:

      4 stars
Not gonna lie, “just wine, citrus, and time” is my kind of recipe 😅. I did make something similar before and used sprite instead of club soda—still kinda worked. Either way, I’m trying this.

  31. User avatar loren.crooks says:

    4 stars
I tried something similar once and the sugar never fully dissolved—so I appreciate the “stir until dissolved” step. Still, I would measure the sugar better.

  32. User avatar lucky777 says:

    4 stars
I dunno about putting sugar in it, feels like it defeats the purpose. But my friends loved it.

  33. User avatar dannie.hills says:

    4 stars
Easy to make! Just mix and chill, can’t go wrong. 👏

  34. User avatar Shadout Mapes says:

    5 stars
This is super refreshing—especially after chilling it long enough. The orange juice makes it taste way less “boozy.” I used triple sec instead of the liqueur and it was still great.

  35. User avatar israel.koch says:

    2 stars
I forgot to chill it for long enough and it tasted kinda harsh. Lesson learned: wait the full 2 hours (or longer).

    1. User avatar ward.walsh76 says:

      5 stars
Ugh, that makes total sense—sangria really does need that chill time for the harsh edge to mellow out. Next time: full 2 hours (or longer) like you said.

  36. User avatar albina.konopelski says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have any soda so I skipped it. Still tasted great!

  37. 1 star
“Sangria” but no chopped apples or berries? Kinda boring, sorry. Still, I guess it’s a lighter style.

  38. User avatar lino.pacocha says:

    5 stars
This sangria is the best! So refreshing on a hot day.

  39. 3 stars
I made it exactly as written and… the sugar dissolved fine, but it still tasted kinda flat. Adding club soda helped a little, yet I feel like it needs more orange liqueur.

  40. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    3 stars
Not bad. Could be better though—mine got watery because my orange was super juicy. Maybe cut the fruit smaller? Idk.

    1. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

      3 stars
Watery is the worst lol. I’d try not adding extra orange juice at all—just the slices. Also maybe chill it longer so it tastes stronger?

    2. User avatar Shannon Swift says:

      4 stars
Totally agree—juicier oranges can definitely water it down. I’ve had better luck using a bit less orange juice or slicing the fruit a little smaller so it infuses faster (then you can chill and serve sooner).

  41. User avatar Jerome Jenkins says:

    3 stars
Eh, it was okay. I expected it to be sweeter. Not sure if I’ll make it again.

  42. User avatar mirella.hegmann86 says:

    3 stars
Sounds nice, but I don’t have time to wait 2 hours. Can I just drink it right away?

    1. 4 stars
You could drink it right away, but it might taste better if you wait! The flavors really come together after chilling.

  43. User avatar barrett.grimes98 says:

    5 stars
Tried this for a small dinner and it was a hit. The fruit slices make it taste way fresher than the bottled stuff. I skipped the club soda but still loved it.

    1. User avatar pattie.koelpin says:

      5 stars
So glad it hit for your dinner! Fresh citrus really does make sangria taste way “alive” compared to bottled mixes. Skipping the club soda sounds totally fine—still nice and refreshing.

    2. User avatar nereida.rodriguez says:

      3 stars
I dunno about adding lime tho… but I guess the fruit slices do help. Next time I’ll try without club soda too. Also I used cheap red wine and it was still drinkable 😅

  44. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe but it turned out way too sweet for my taste.

  45. User avatar donte.brakus says:

    1 star
Sangria? More like sad-gria. Not what I expected. Just tasted like juice!

  46. 5 stars
This sangria is amazing! I served it at my party and it was a hit. Will make again!

    1. User avatar albina.roberts says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad you liked it! Sangria really is the perfect party drink. Did you add any other fruits?

    2. User avatar Iona Corolla says:

      2 stars
Really? I found it kinda bland. Maybe my wine was too cheap? Anyway, glad it worked for you.

  47. User avatar clelia.hills24 says:

    5 stars
Made this for friends last weekend—super refreshing. I used Cointreau instead of brandy and it turned out great. The 2 hours chilling really makes a difference.

  48. User avatar vicenta.mayer1986 says:

    5 stars
just add more fruits! like strawberries or peaches, it’s divine!

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree! More fruit makes it so refreshing. Yum!

  49. User avatar erich.luettgen16 says:

    3 stars
The measurements are simple but the “1/4 cup brandy or orange liqueur” felt like a lot in my case. It came out a little boozy for my crowd, but flavor was fine.

  50. User avatar melany.gleichner says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I think the brandy/orange liqueur is a lot for everyday sangria. Maybe half would be better for me.

  51. User avatar efrain.kuhlman says:

    4 stars
The recipe says “preferably dry,” but dry wine can be expensive. I used what I had—worked, just sweeter. Still good!

    1. 4 stars
Dry wine is like $20 where I live so I get it. But sweeter wine changes the whole thing—maybe next time cut the sugar? Also does club soda really do much or is it just for vibes? 😅

    2. User avatar wilfredo.dicki says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—“preferably dry” is more of a guideline. I’ve done it with whatever bottle was on hand and it still tastes like sangria should: fruity and refreshing. 🍊

  52. User avatar augustus.howell says:

    1 star
Sugars in drinks is a scam to get you addicted. I like mine without.

  53. User avatar elisha.kuhic2013 says:

    2 stars
I dunno… I followed the recipe but it just didn’t taste like sangria to me. Kinda bland.

  54. User avatar geoffrey.murphy45 says:

    5 stars
Omg perfect for my dinner party. Everyone asked for the recipe and I just acted like I knew what I was doing 😅

  55. User avatar everett.ortiz21 says:

    5 stars
Absolutely love this recipe! It’s a hit at all my parties. 🍷

  56. User avatar ellamae.flatley50 says:

    3 stars
I made this and it was too sweet for my taste. I think less sugar next time.

  57. User avatar angelo.christiansen says:

    5 stars
This sangria recipe was fantastic! Perfectly refreshing for summer gatherings.

    1. User avatar brad.carroll42 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! This recipe made my BBQ a hit. Everyone loved it!

  58. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    5 stars
Delicious! I used white wine instead and it still came out great. Love it!

    1. 2 stars
Wait, isn’t Sangria only supposed to be made with red wine? Seems kinda off… 🤔

    2. User avatar saul.effertz says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! I’ve never thought to use white wine, I’ll have to give it a try. Thanks for sharing!

  59. 4 stars
This is better than boxed sangria for sure. I’m not a big cook, but stirring sugar into wine actually worked (shockingly).

    1. User avatar crista.harris83 says:

      5 stars
Right?! The sugar dissolving part always sounds fake until you actually do it. Cheers 🍷

  60. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    5 stars
    Very good!!

  61. User avatar carry.kuhn1976 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about adding lemon and lime to red wine, but I tried it anyway. Actually, it’s refreshing and not sour.

  62. User avatar jamie.rowe1957 says:

    4 stars
Isn’t sangria just a fancy way to say fruit punch for adults? 😂 Love it!

  63. User avatar lorenzo.gorczany86 says:

    3 stars
Could be my wine choice, but mine came out a bit sour. I used a bitter dry red and only squeezed one orange, so maybe I should’ve measured better.

  64. User avatar Doug Updegrave says:

    2 stars
I dont have brandy, can I just use more orange juice? like 1 cup more? lol

  65. 5 stars
Super good 😋 but i used grapefruit by mistake and it was still good lol. Next time I’ll do it exactly.

    1. User avatar Ima B. Leever says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Grapefruit in sangria is actually such a vibe—glad it worked out 😄

  66. User avatar gillian.oconner3 says:

    3 stars
The fruit slices are cute but I feel like lemon + lime can get bitter if you slice too thick. Mine was a little sharp.

  67. User avatar Miss Ryan Stokes says:

    5 stars
Great flavor balance—wine + orange juice + citrus is exactly what I want. My only gripe is it disappears too fast at parties.

  68. User avatar wade.shanahan says:

    5 stars
Delicious! But next time I’ll cut back on the brandy. Whoa!

  69. User avatar randi.jenkins1973 says:

    3 stars
Why “preferably dry” like that’s a grocery store option most of us know? I just grabbed whatever red wine was on sale 😅 But it still tasted fine, just sweeter.

  70. User avatar young.corwin34 says:

    4 stars
The measurements are clear, but I wish it said how much ice to use. I know it’s over ice, but different glasses = different vibes lol.

    1. 3 stars
I don’t measure the ice—just dump some in lol. I’ve found if you do less ice the sangria tastes stronger, but if you do more it’s sweeter/colder? Not sure. Different glasses though, yeah.

    2. User avatar adolph.wiza says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—“over ice” is vague. I usually do 3-4 big cubes per glass (or fill it about halfway), and it keeps the flavor without getting too watered down.

  71. User avatar joann.glover1986 says:

    2 stars
Too sweet for my taste! Might try less sugar next time. Can I use lemon-lime soda instead of club soda?

  72. User avatar hoyt.howe73 says:

    5 stars
    Two words: too good. 😅

    1. 5 stars
Two words indeed—this is dangerously drinkable. 😅🍷

    2. User avatar takako.mills8 says:

      4 stars
Ok but does it taste super sweet? I always mess up sangria—like I add too much sugar. Still, I’m intrigued.

  73. User avatar dwayne.oconner1980 says:

    4 stars
Easy steps, and 2 hours chilling actually matters. I used orange liqueur instead of brandy and it still came out great. Next time I’ll maybe add a little extra sugar because my wine was very dry.

  74. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    4 stars
Not bad! I followed it pretty closely, but I think 2 tablespoons sugar is a little low for my taste. Next time I’ll bump it to 1/4 cup.

  75. 4 stars
Nice and simple. 2 hours chilling worked, but honestly I think 4+ hours is even better—the flavors really mellow out. Dry red wine is key.

  76. 5 stars
    Delicious!

  77. 2 stars
I followed the measurements but somehow mine tasted kinda flat and the citrus felt too strong. Next time I’ll probably chill longer and strain out some fruit.

  78. User avatar Randolph Turcotte says:

    2 stars
Took a while to make. More complicated than I thought.

    1. User avatar nikia.sauer55 says:

      2 stars
I don’t think it’s that complicated. Just pour and mix, what’s the big deal? 🤷‍♂️

    2. User avatar Slartibartfast says:

      4 stars
Yeah, it can be a bit tricky if you’re not used to mixing drinks. But the end result is so worth it! 😄

  79. User avatar Margorie Kreiger says:

    3 stars
Easy peasy recipe but I kinda mixed up the pour steps. Does it have to sit for 2 hours? I was impatient. 🙁

  80. User avatar georgene.klocko9 says:

    2 stars
I dunno, sangria is usually not that refined. This is more like “wine + fruit water” to me. Still drinkable tho. Wouldn’t wow anyone.

    1. User avatar delmar.robel36 says:

      4 stars
Honestly I think it’s more than “wine + fruit water.” The brandy and the sugar actually balance the acidity. If you skip chilling, yeah it’ll taste flat, but give it the 2 hours.

    2. 4 stars
I get what you mean, but “refined” isn’t the goal for me—this tastes fresh and easy. The citrus + chilling for a couple hours does the heavy lifting.
