Sangria Recipe

November 28, 2024

This Sangria recipe is a refreshing, fruity cocktail recipe that’s perfect for warm-weather gatherings, backyard barbecues, or relaxing evenings with friends. This classic Spanish drink blends wine with fresh fruit, a touch of sweetness, and a splash of something fizzy, creating a vibrant beverage that’s as beautiful as it is delicious.

The base of sangria is traditionally a bottle of red wine, typically something dry and medium-bodied like Tempranillo, Garnacha, or Merlot. The wine is combined with a variety of sliced fresh fruits – common choices include oranges, lemons, limes, apples, and berries. These fruits infuse the wine with their natural sweetness and vibrant flavors as it chills.

To balance the acidity of the wine and add a hint of sweetness, a little sugar, honey, or simple syrup is stirred in. Many recipes also include a splash of brandy, which deepens the flavor and adds a bit of warmth. For a lighter twist, you can substitute the brandy with orange liqueur like Cointreau or Grand Marnier.

Just before serving, sangria is topped off with a splash of club soda, lemon-lime soda, or sparkling water to add a touch of effervescence. This final step brightens the drink and makes it incredibly refreshing.

Sangria recipe is endlessly customizable. Swap red wine for white to create a crisp white sangria, or use rosé for a lighter, fruitier variation. Tropical fruits like pineapple and mango, or herbs like mint and basil, can be added for a creative twist.

Serve sangria over plenty of ice in a large pitcher or punch bowl, letting the fruit float beautifully on top. It pairs wonderfully with tapas, grilled meats, seafood, or simple cheese and charcuterie boards.

Sweet, tangy, and beautifully colorful, sangria is the ultimate crowd-pleaser. It is easy to make ahead, perfect for sharing, and guaranteed to bring a festive touch to any gathering.

This sangria recipe is super easy and delicious! Perfect for summer parties. I made it for my friends and everyone loved it!

I’m glad it turned out well for you! Sangria is definitely a crowd pleaser. 🍹

  2. 5 stars
I love that you chill it 2 hours—honestly that makes a difference. Also, adding club soda right before serving is the move.

    1. User avatar otha.herman32 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—those 2 hours really mellow the wine. I’m doing the club soda right at serving next time!

  3. 2 stars
I had a problem with the taste. Maybe too much brandy.

  4. User avatar hobert.gleason says:

    3 stars
Mine tasted a little too boozy even after 2 hours. Next time I’ll reduce the brandy a bit or use less sugar.

  5. 4 stars
Simple enough, and the citrus combo is spot on. I did add a little extra sugar because my oranges were kinda tart, but overall easy win.

  6. 2 stars
I tried making this for a party and someone said it tastes like punch from a theme park. Ouch. I think I used the wrong orange juice—store-bought was kinda bland.

  7. User avatar rosario.gibson says:

    5 stars
The club soda tip is perfect. I added it right before pouring and it stayed fizzy longer than when I’ve rushed in the past.

  8. User avatar dalene.walker says:

    4 stars
Perfect for a party! Everyone loved it! Will definitely make again.

  9. 3 stars
Mine turned out a bit too sour even though I used fresh orange juice. Maybe my oranges were small? Next time I’ll add a touch more sugar or use sweeter wine.

  10. User avatar son.hessel70 says:

Yummy!! Perfect for hot summer days. 🍊🍋💖

This sounds amazing! Can’t wait to make it myself. Perfect for sipping by the pool! 🏖️

  11. User avatar darrick.brakus says:

Best sangria I’ve ever made. Thanks for sharing! The sugar makes a big difference.

  12. 1 star
I’m not sure about this, is it really sangria without using fruit-flavored vodka? 🤷‍♂️

  13. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    5 stars
Absolutely loved this! Perfect for summer parties. Will make again for sure!

  14. User avatar libby.daugherty says:

    4 stars
Two hours chilling felt a little short for me. I left it overnight and the flavors blended way better. Worth the wait.

  15. User avatar lourdes.kessler says:

    5 stars
Tried this for a small get-together—so refreshing! The orange juice + citrus slices make it taste way more “bright” than the usual sangria I’ve had. I added the club soda and it was perfect.

  16. User avatar frances.bednar says:

    5 stars
Made this last weekend and it was a hit—tastes way more “grown-up” than the boxed stuff. I let it chill closer to 4 hours and the flavors really blended.

    1. User avatar Genghis Khan says:

      5 stars
Yes! Chilling it longer really makes a difference. I’ve found ~4 hours is the sweet spot too—everything tastes more blended and less sharp.

    2. User avatar pasquale.halvorson says:

      3 stars
I made sangria once but mine tasted kinda like cough syrup 😅 maybe I didn’t let it chill long enough. Do you think the brandy is necessary or could I swap for something sweeter?

  17. User avatar fletcher.robel says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I think it needed more fruit. Maybe some berries? Just a suggestion!

  18. 2 stars
The recipe says ‘preferably dry’—I used a sweeter red and it came out cloying. Next time I’ll follow the instruction more closely.

  19. 4 stars
I only had sweet wine and it still came out okay, but I’d say the “preferably dry” part is important. Next time I’ll grab a better bottle.

    1. User avatar alisa.collins7 says:

      5 stars
Yep—sweet wine can make it cloying fast. “Dry” really matters for balance with the orange juice and sugar. Nice save though!

  20. User avatar lenard.gibson says:

    4 stars
I tried it, but my sugar didn’t dissolve at first. Maybe my pitcher was too cold? I ended up stirring longer and it fixed it.

    1. User avatar kristina.bailey14 says:

      5 stars
That makes sense—cold liquid can slow down dissolving. Stirring longer usually does the trick. Next time maybe use room-temp wine first or dissolve the sugar separately in a splash of juice.

    2. 2 stars
I don’t know, sugar should dissolve either way… maybe your sugar was old? Also isn’t sangria supposed to be really sweet? I’d just skip the sugar and use sweeter wine.

  21. User avatar greg.jacobson says:

    3 stars
I tried this but used white wine instead! Didn’t taste as good. Maybe stick to red? 🤔

  22. User avatar Pizpot Gargravarr says:

    4 stars
I left out the sugar and it still tasted great! A little healthier too. 😅

  23. 4 stars
Pretty good base recipe. I used a slightly sweeter red wine and it turned out sweeter than I expected, but still tasty. Next time I’ll stick to dry like it says.

    1. User avatar gerard.swift87 says:

      5 stars
Thanks! Yeah, sangria can get surprisingly sweet with the wrong wine. Dry red is definitely the move—glad it was still tasty though!

  24. 3 stars
Hmm, I think white wine is better for sangria… But this was okay.

  25. User avatar Meriadoc Brandybuck says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about putting lemon and lime in the same batch, but it works. The balance is surprisingly nice. I served it with lots of ice and the flavors stayed strong.

  26. User avatar frances.murazik40 says:

    2 stars
This is not real sangria… where’s the fruit slices?

    1. User avatar arden.moore2006 says:

      4 stars
Actually, there are fruit slices in the recipe! Orange, lemon, and lime. You should check again.

    2. User avatar ahmed.stark43 says:

      3 stars
Who needs fruit slices? I like it simple. Just give me the wine!

  27. User avatar hershel.steuber says:

    2 stars
The fruit slices look pretty but they sink so fast. Also I forgot the sugar dissolved step and it was like crunchy for a bit—still drank it, but… whoops.

    1. User avatar son.hermann25 says:

      4 stars
Oof—been there. The fruit sinking is totally normal once it chills and the juice/wine pulls the slices down. Next time, toss the fruit in right before serving or add a bit more citrus juice so it stays buoyant longer. And yeah, dissolving the sugar matters—without it you get that crunchy “whoa” moment.

    2. 5 stars
That’s what happens when the sugar doesn’t fully dissolve 😅. I usually stir mine longer (like 2-3 minutes) before adding OJ, and I don’t even bother with chunks until after it’s been in the fridge a bit. Still looks pretty though—sangria always forgives us lol.

  28. User avatar jed.reilly says:

    5 stars
This is exactly the vibe I wanted—easy, fruity, and not overly sweet. The 2 hours in the fridge really helps. I added a splash more orange juice and it was perfect.

    1. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I love hearing it’s easy and not syrupy. The 2 hours definitely makes a difference—must try with extra OJ next time.

    2. User avatar geoWizard says:

      3 stars
I did mine like this but I added sugar again cuz I thought it needed it… oops lol. Still tasty though. Would it be better with less sugar if you’re already adding more orange juice?

  29. User avatar zada.jones82 says:

    4 stars
I used a sweet-ish red wine and honestly it still worked, but I’d probably stick to dry like the recipe says. The orange juice + citrus is a great combo.

  30. User avatar Death Hound says:

    5 stars
This sangria recipe is a game changer! So refreshing and perfect for summer BBQs!

    1. User avatar Gail Andrews says:

      3 stars
I’m not sure about the sugar though. Isn’t it sweet enough with the juice? I prefer less sweetness.

    2. User avatar Thalassa says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! This sangria looks so delicious 😍. Can’t wait to try it at my next BBQ!

  31. 3 stars
I think it needs more sweetness—mine tasted a bit tart, probably because my wine wasn’t as sweet as expected. Still good though, just adjust the sugar to taste.

    1. 5 stars
Totally—dry red wine can make sangria taste way more tart. I usually add a splash more sugar or even a little honey syrup and it’s perfect.

  32. 3 stars
Not sure about the orange juice + citrus—felt a bit too tart for me. Next time I’ll either add more sugar or choose a sweeter wine.

  33. 3 stars
This was alright but a bit too sweet for my taste. I think I prefer a more traditional recipe.

  34. User avatar genie.bernier1984 says:

    2 stars
Way too much sugar! I thought it would be sweeter with the orange juice and all. Next time I’ll skip the sugar.

    1. User avatar oscar.lueilwitz96 says:

      4 stars
I actually love the sweetness! But if you think it’s too much, skipping the sugar sounds smart. Everyone has their taste, right?

  35. User avatar brent.nikolaus9 says:

    5 stars
Sangria is my favorite drink! This recipe is a winner, I added strawberries too and it was so good.

  36. User avatar andreas.wehner says:

    3 stars
Tried it exactly as written and it was good, not amazing. Maybe my wine was too sweet? Still, the smell while it chills is amazing.

  37. User avatar peter.feeney0 says:

    4 stars
I used white wine instead. It’s delish! Highly recommend trying. 🌟

    1. User avatar Madam Aroma says:

      4 stars
White wine, huh? That’s a different take! 😄 Might have to give it a shot if I ever run out of red.

  38. User avatar yuette.hane20 says:

    2 stars
Sangria is supposed to be like… fruit soup right? This one tasted kinda normal. Also I skipped the club soda and it was kinda flat, ngl.

  39. User avatar joe_banana says:

    4 stars
I used white wine instead of red and it was still pretty good. Just a lil different.

  40. User avatar genoveva.kunze1984 says:

    2 stars
Sounds fancy, but can I just use any wine? Doesn’t have to be dry, right?

  41. User avatar edwardo.durgan20 says:

    3 stars
Sangria in Spain is different! You should use more fruits.

  42. User avatar kennith.green7 says:

    4 stars
Honestly easy and tastes fancy. I like that it doesn’t call for a bunch of complicated stuff—just wine, citrus, and time.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—this sounds way less fussy than the fancy restaurant versions. Two hours is perfect too. 🍊🍋

    2. User avatar lidia.simonis says:

      4 stars
Not gonna lie, “just wine, citrus, and time” is my kind of recipe 😅. I did make something similar before and used sprite instead of club soda—still kinda worked. Either way, I’m trying this.

  43. User avatar gus.tremblay75 says:

    4 stars
I made it for friends and everyone went back for seconds. I did add the club soda like the recipe says—nice little sparkle.

    1. User avatar parker.keebler40 says:

      5 stars
Love that! Seconds is the best compliment. The club soda fizz really makes it feel more “fresh” than flat sangria—nice call.

  44. User avatar Bill Dollar says:

    3 stars
I’m not sure why my sugar didn’t dissolve right away, but once I stirred longer it turned out fine. Flavor is good, though a bit sweet for me.

    1. User avatar geoWizard says:

      5 stars
That’s totally normal—sugar sometimes takes a minute to dissolve in wine. I usually stir a few extra times or warm the sugar with a splash of orange juice first.

  45. User avatar loren.crooks says:

    4 stars
I tried something similar once and the sugar never fully dissolved—so I appreciate the “stir until dissolved” step. Still, I would measure the sugar better.

  46. User avatar refugio.dare2019 says:

    3 stars
Came out a little too strong for me with the brandy—next time I’ll use less or go with orange liqueur. Still tasty though.

    1. 5 stars
Totally get that—brandy can hit hard. I usually start with 2 tablespoons and taste before adding more. Orange liqueur sounds like a great smoother option!

    2. 4 stars
Mine came out strong too, like boozy booom lol. Next time I’m gonna try orange liqueur or maybe just skip it? Also I think 1/4 cup is a lot for my tastes.

  47. User avatar lucky777 says:

    4 stars
I dunno about putting sugar in it, feels like it defeats the purpose. But my friends loved it.

  48. 3 stars
I tried it, but I’m confused—do you actually need the club soda if you’re already using wine? Feels a bit unnecessary to me.

    1. User avatar lane.becker says:

      5 stars
Yeah, it’s totally optional. The wine + orange juice give you flavor, but the club soda is mainly for fizz (more “spritz” than flat sangria). If you like it less fizzy, skip it.

    2. User avatar dana.sipes1985 says:

      4 stars
I get why you’re asking—wine itself isn’t fizzy. But also, if you add the club soda too early it can go flat, so I always add it right before serving. Kinda makes a difference. Try once without, once with.

  49. User avatar dannie.hills says:

    4 stars
Easy to make! Just mix and chill, can’t go wrong. 👏

  50. User avatar Shadout Mapes says:

    5 stars
This is super refreshing—especially after chilling it long enough. The orange juice makes it taste way less “boozy.” I used triple sec instead of the liqueur and it was still great.

  51. User avatar israel.koch says:

    2 stars
I forgot to chill it for long enough and it tasted kinda harsh. Lesson learned: wait the full 2 hours (or longer).

    1. User avatar ward.walsh76 says:

      5 stars
Ugh, that makes total sense—sangria really does need that chill time for the harsh edge to mellow out. Next time: full 2 hours (or longer) like you said.

  52. User avatar albina.konopelski says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have any soda so I skipped it. Still tasted great!

  53. 1 star
“Sangria” but no chopped apples or berries? Kinda boring, sorry. Still, I guess it’s a lighter style.

  54. User avatar lino.pacocha says:

    5 stars
This sangria is the best! So refreshing on a hot day.

  55. User avatar alvin.schowalter53 says:

    5 stars
Tried this for a dinner party and it was a hit. The freshly squeezed citrus really makes it taste bright, not syrupy.

  56. 3 stars
I made it exactly as written and… the sugar dissolved fine, but it still tasted kinda flat. Adding club soda helped a little, yet I feel like it needs more orange liqueur.

  57. User avatar Mrs. Russel Wyman says:

    2 stars
Honestly? Kinda bland. The fruit flavor didn’t pop until I added more citrus slices than the recipe calls for.

    1. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      4 stars
I hear you. Mine was kind of dull until I bumped up the citrus and let it chill longer—like 4+ hours.

  58. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    3 stars
Not bad. Could be better though—mine got watery because my orange was super juicy. Maybe cut the fruit smaller? Idk.

    1. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

      3 stars
Watery is the worst lol. I’d try not adding extra orange juice at all—just the slices. Also maybe chill it longer so it tastes stronger?

    2. User avatar Shannon Swift says:

      4 stars
Totally agree—juicier oranges can definitely water it down. I’ve had better luck using a bit less orange juice or slicing the fruit a little smaller so it infuses faster (then you can chill and serve sooner).

  59. User avatar Jerome Jenkins says:

    3 stars
Eh, it was okay. I expected it to be sweeter. Not sure if I’ll make it again.

  60. User avatar mirella.hegmann86 says:

    3 stars
Sounds nice, but I don’t have time to wait 2 hours. Can I just drink it right away?

    1. 4 stars
You could drink it right away, but it might taste better if you wait! The flavors really come together after chilling.
