Heart Shaped Homemade Pizza

January 24, 2024

Nothing says “I love you” like a heart-shaped homemade pizza. Whether you’re celebrating Valentine’s Day, hosting a fun family dinner, or just want to add a little flair to your next pizza night, this playful twist on a classic dish will make everyone smile.

The beauty of this pizza lies in its versatility. You can use any pizza dough recipe you love, store-bought or homemade. For a quick shortcut, opt for pre-made dough, which works perfectly for this project. If you prefer to make your own dough, a simple mix of flour, yeast, olive oil, and water will do the trick. Allow it to rise, then roll it out into a heart shape. The trick is to start by rolling your dough into a circle and then gently pulling and shaping the edges into a heart, working with your hands to form the point and the top curves.

Once your heart-shaped dough is ready, it’s time to pile on the toppings. Start with a thin layer of pizza sauce, and then add your favorite cheese – mozzarella is the classic choice, but you can mix it up with provolone, goat cheese, or even a bit of ricotta. Then, go wild with your toppings! You can keep it simple with a classic Margherita, fresh basil and sliced tomatoes, or get creative with pepperoni, mushrooms, olives, bell peppers, or even some fresh arugula after baking for a peppery finish.

Bake your pizza at a high temperature (about 475°F or 245°C) for 10–12 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned. The result is a crisp, cheesy, and fun pizza that’s perfect for sharing.

Heart-shaped homemade pizza isn’t just about looks, it’s about making a meal that’s full of love and personality. It’s perfect for date night, family gatherings, or any occasion where you want to serve something a little extra special. Serve with a side salad, a glass of wine, or your favorite beverage, and enjoy every bite.

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce
  • 1 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Heart-shaped cookie cutter
  • Pepperoni slices

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar.
  • In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for 5 minutes, or until foamy.
  • Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rise for 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into 4 equal pieces.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out each piece into a heart shape using the heart-shaped cookie cutter as a guide.
  • Place the heart-shaped pizza crusts on a greased baking sheet.
  • Spread pizza sauce evenly over each crust, leaving a small border around the edges.
  • Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce.
  • Bake the pizzas in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Remove from the oven and let the pizzas cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
  • Fold a pepperoni slice in half and use a pair of kitchen shears to trim the edges into the shape of half of a heart. Arrange a layer of pepperoni hearts over the pizza dough.

I don’t know about the heart shape… just feels gimmicky. Taste over form, right?

Five stars for vibes. Four stars for taste. But I burned one because I got distracted by the heart shape lol.

Easy to make! But I subbed some ingredients and it didn’t have the same taste. Still pretty good!

This recipe is too complicated for me, just buy a frozen pizza instead! 😩

Looks cute but I’m skeptical about using a cookie cutter for pizza. Dough can spring back—also my cutter stuck. Still, I guess it’s fun for Valentine’s.

Heart-shaped pizza? Sounds silly. Just get a regular pizza! But I guess it’s a fun idea for Valentine’s Day.

Had to substitute half the flour with cornmeal because we didn’t have enough. Ended up a bit crumbly, so watch out!

    1. 3 stars
Cornmeal? Really? That’s not a common swap. You sure it didn’t mess up the taste? The idea is cute tho!

    2. User avatar rosena.runolfsdottir says:

I actually like a bit of crunch in my crust! Maybe I’ll give the cornmeal a try! Thanks for the tip!

The instructions say rise for 30 minutes, but mine took closer to 45. Still turned out great though. Next time I’ll warm the water a bit more and be patient.

Am I the only one who thinks 30 minutes rise is short? I let mine go longer and it was softer. If you rush it, it might be more chewy.

  22. 3 stars
Not gonna lie, 450°F feels too hot for my oven. The crust browned fast, but the inside was okay. I’d probably lower it to 425°F next time.

Best pizza ever! I added a ton of toppings and it still held up! 🍕

A pizza shaped like a heart? Really? Who’s got time for that? 😂

  35. 1 star
Meh, I’d rather order pizza. This seems like too much work for a meal.

  36. User avatar rosanne.orn72 says:

I followed it pretty much exactly and the crust came out a bit chewy (in a good way). 450°F for 13 minutes did the trick for me.

    1. User avatar reynaldo.okeefe1977 says:

      5 stars
Nice! I’ve been chasing that “chewy but still tender” crust for forever. Good call on 450°F for 13 min.

    2. User avatar myra.sporer2 says:

      4 stars
Chewy (in a good way) sounds perfect. Did you bake on a regular rack or the middle shelf? Might try your timing next time!

  37. User avatar yung.jacobi68 says:

This was super delicious! Everyone in my house enjoyed it. Thanks!

My dough didn’t rise, what did I do wrong? I followed all the steps. So frustraiting!

    1. User avatar lupita.cruickshank87 says:

Sounds like your yeast might not have been active. Did you use warm water? It should be warm to the touch but not hot! Keep at it, you’ll get there!

  39. User avatar marcos.macgyver32 says:

    5 stars
Yum! but I didn’t have mozzarella so I used cheddar. Either way, it’s a win!

  40. User avatar cassidy.abshire8 says:

Super easy and quick. My husband loved it! Will definitely make again.
