Grilled Greek Chicken Gyros

April 25, 2024

Few things hit the spot like a perfectly grilled Greek chicken gyro. It’s the kind of meal that’s packed with flavor, easy to make, and endlessly satisfying. Whether you’re serving them up for a casual weeknight dinner or a weekend gathering, these gyros never disappoint.

The heart of this dish is the chicken, marinated in a blend of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, and a touch of yogurt. This simple marinade works magic, keeping the chicken juicy and infusing it with classic Greek flavors. Grill it until slightly charred and golden brown, then slice it thin for that signature gyro texture.

But the real fun begins when it’s time to assemble. Start with warm, soft pita bread. Lay down a generous portion of the grilled chicken, then top it with a refreshing mix of crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, red onion slices, and tangy feta cheese. Finally, don’t forget the tzatziki, the creamy cucumber-yogurt sauce that ties it all together. You can make your own or use a good-quality store-bought version if you’re short on time.

What makes gyros such a crowd-pleaser is the balance of textures and flavors. The warm, tender chicken contrasts with the cool crunch of veggies, while the tangy tzatziki adds a smooth, zesty finish. It’s fresh, filling, and finger-licking good.

These gyros are also super customizable. Add olives or roasted red peppers for extra flair. Or swap the chicken for grilled shrimp, lamb, or even falafel to mix things up. You can serve them wrapped for a street-food vibe or deconstructed on a platter for a build-your-own style dinner.

Grilled Greek chicken gyros bring the taste of the Mediterranean to your table with minimal fuss. They’re flavorful, portable, and perfect for sharing, a true go-to recipe when you want something both healthy and delicious.

Delicious and flavorful grilled Greek chicken wrapped in warm pita bread with tzatziki sauce, lettuce, tomato, and onion.

Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 4 chicken breasts boneless, skinless
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tbsp Greek seasoning blend
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup dill chopped fresh
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 pita bread
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup red onion sliced

Instructions

  • In a bowl, combine the minced garlic, Greek seasoning blend, olive oil, and salt and pepper. Mix well.
  • Add the chicken breasts to the bowl and toss until they are well coated in the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or overnight for best flavor.
  • Preheat the grill to medium-high heat. Remove the chicken from the marinade and grill for 6-8 minutes per side, or until cooked through and juices run clear. Remove from the grill and let rest for a few minutes before slicing into thin strips.
  • While the chicken is resting, make the tzatziki sauce by combining the Greek yogurt, chopped dill, lemon juice, and salt and pepper in a bowl. Mix well.
  • To assemble the gyros, warm the pita breads on the grill or stovetop. Spread a generous amount of tzatziki sauce on each pita. Top with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, sliced red onion, and grilled chicken strips.
  • Fold the pita in half and serve immediately. Enjoy your delicious homemade Greek chicken gyros!

I omitted the red onion since I hate it, but still turned out great! Who cares about onions?

Simple to follow but I burned the chicken. Yikes! I’ll try again. Maybe less time on grill?

Not gonna lie, my chicken was a little dry. I think I overcooked—next time I’ll pull it when it’s just cooked through.

Not bad! But my tzatziki came out kinda thin—maybe my yogurt was too runny? Still tasted good though.

Made this last weekend and wow—super flavorful! The dill + lemon in the tzatziki is a perfect match, and the chicken stayed juicy even though I grilled it a bit longer than stated.

Not gonna lie, I was worried 6-8 minutes per side would be too fast, but my chicken came out juicy. Good instructions.

The seasoning was too much for me. I prefer simpler flavors. Maybe less garlic next time?

I understand! Some people just like it simple. Have you tried just using lemon and olive oil? So good!

The pita bread turned into a soggy mess for me. How do you keep it from getting wet?

Too much garlic, maybe? My breath wasn’t great after! 😂

    1. 4 stars
Haha, yeah! Garlic can do that! But it’s so worth it for the flavor, right?

I was skeptical about 1 hour being enough, but it turned out great. Next time I’ll marinate overnight for extra punch.

Same here—I didn’t think 1 hour would do much, but the chicken was super juicy. I’ll definitely try overnight next time for even more flavor!

Not to be rude, but 6-8 min per side seems fast for 4 chicken breasts. Mine would’ve been raw, lol. I ended up checking with a thermometer and it needed more time. Still tasty though!

I tried this and the chicken got burnt on the grill 😩. Maybe cool the grill?
