Grilled Chicken and Avocado Sandwich

March 20, 2024

There’s something so satisfying about a well-made sandwich, especially when it’s loaded with flavor and made with wholesome ingredients. This grilled chicken and avocado sandwich is a go-to for lunch or dinner, it’s easy, filling, and packed with the kind of fresh, feel-good ingredients that make every bite worth it.

Start with the star of the show: the grilled chicken breast. A quick marinade of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and herbs will take your chicken from basic to bursting with flavor. Grill it until it’s beautifully seared on the outside and juicy on the inside. While the chicken rests, you can prep the other layers.

Creamy avocado plays the perfect counterpart to the savory chicken. Slice or mash it with a little lemon juice, salt, and pepper to enhance its buttery richness. Next, choose your bread. A crusty ciabatta roll, hearty whole grain, or sourdough slice works wonderfully. Toast it lightly for a golden crunch that holds up well to the fillings.

Now it’s time to build. Start with a swipe of mayo, pesto, or even a light garlic aioli if you’re feeling fancy. Layer on your grilled chicken, avocado, and crisp toppings like lettuce, tomato, and red onion. Add a slice of cheese, like Swiss, provolone, or mozzarella, for extra indulgence, or keep it dairy-free for a lighter take.

This sandwich is not only delicious but also well-balanced. You’ve got lean protein, healthy fats, fiber, and just the right amount of carbs to keep you energized without feeling heavy. It’s also endlessly customizable. Swap the chicken for turkey or tofu, or add a spicy element with sliced jalapeños or a chipotle spread.

Serve it with sweet potato fries, a side salad, or just a handful of chips for a satisfying plate. Whether you’re enjoying it hot off the grill or packing it for lunch, this grilled chicken and avocado sandwich delivers all the flavor you crave in a no-fuss meal.

Avocados are often referred to as a “superfood” due to their numerous health benefits. In addition to being heart-healthy, avocados contain antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation, promote eye health, and support healthy aging.

Chicken and avocado sandwiches have gained popularity in recent years due to their healthfulness, flavor, and Instagram-worthy appearance. They are frequently featured on restaurant menus and food blogs, often with creative variations and presentations.

This sandwich is delicious! The avocado makes it so creamy. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar carroll.schultz says:

I gotta try this! Avocado really adds a nice touch, doesn’t it? Thanks for sharing!

  2. User avatar isaias.maggio says:

I found the chicken a bit dry. Maybe cook it less? Not sure if I’ll try again.

  3. User avatar rowena.senger90 says:

Honestly the mayo is kinda heavy. I used light mayo and added extra lettuce to balance it out—still good.

    1. User avatar raphael.beahan1954 says:

      3 stars
Hmm. I don’t know, I feel like mayo is the point 😅 Light mayo might make it too dry or not flavorful. Maybe use less mayo instead of more lettuce?

    2. 5 stars
Totally get that—mayo can overpower everything fast. Your tweaks sound spot on with the extra lettuce. I might try light mayo next time too.

  4. User avatar claud.mcdermott says:

    3 stars
Idk about this recipe, if its grilled chicken I prefer it with BBQ sauce. This is just plain.

  5. User avatar Lucas White says:

    5 stars
Yum! Love how easy this is! I added some spicy mayo and it took it to another level. Will make again!

  6. 2 stars
I’m skeptical about cooking chicken on a grill for only 6-8 mins a side. Mine wasn’t even close at that point—had to finish in the oven.

  7. User avatar william.volkman2015 says:

    5 stars
This turned out way better than I expected—juicy chicken and the avocado with mayo is such a good combo. I followed the timing and it was spot on.

  8. User avatar krystin.mante55 says:

    5 stars
My kids loved it! Even ate all their veggies, which never happens! Thank you!

  9. User avatar rodolfo.kutch98 says:

This is my new go-to. Quick weeknight meal, and avocado makes it feel fancy. Also the toast step makes a huge difference. 10/10!

    1. User avatar louie.thiel39 says:

      5 stars
Love this! The avocado + toasted bread combo really does make it feel way more “restaurant” than a regular chicken sandwich.

  10. User avatar Fiddlesticks says:

    4 stars
Yummm! My kids loved it! I skipped the mayo since I’m watching my weight, but it was still tasty!

    1. User avatar shavonda.walsh63 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! I love it when kids enjoy healthy meals. Great job skipping the mayo!

    2. 3 stars
Kids love anything with chicken! But mayo is the best part tho. Are you sure it was tasty without it?

  11. User avatar valeri.bechtelar1988 says:

    3 stars
I dunno, do people really put mayo on sandwiches? Seems weird…I used mustard and it worked fine!

  12. User avatar orlando.leuschke1990 says:

This sandwich is AMAZING! The grilled chicken and avocado pair so well together. 5 stars!

  13. User avatar seymour.dickinson2007 says:

This sandwich is amazing! The chicken is so juicy and the avocado makes it so creamy. Definitely a hit in my house!

  14. User avatar Daka Tuss says:

    2 stars
Honestly, this was just ok. The mayo was too much for me. Next time I’ll skip it.

    1. User avatar felicita.dubuque2014 says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean! Mayo can be overwhelming sometimes. I love using mustard instead for a tangy kick!

  15. User avatar elanor.roberts1991 says:

    4 stars
Yummy!!! 🤤 My kids even liked it!!

  16. User avatar hailey.anderson says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about grilling time—my chicken took longer. Could be my grill, but still, the instructions were a little too confident for me.

    1. User avatar domenic.mueller says:

      5 stars
Yeah I’ve had that happen too. 6–8 min/side felt “too sure” for my grill—thickness and cold chicken matter a lot. I usually go by temp now (like 165°F) rather than the clock.

    2. User avatar florentino.smitham1992 says:

      3 stars
Maybe your heat was lower or the chicken were thicker? Mine cooks fast on max but then again I cut it in half first. The recipe says medium-high, but grills vary—also 6-8 min might be right if they’re thin.

  17. User avatar Cave Bear says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid. I used a little more pepper than it asked and it turned out great. Only thing: my chicken took closer to 9 minutes per side, so watch your thickness.

  18. User avatar raphael.brakus50 says:

    3 stars
It was alright, but I feel like something was missing. Maybe a little spice? Just not that flavorful for me.

  19. User avatar lacresha.howe65 says:

    4 stars
Yummy! But why use whole wheat? White bread is tastier!

  20. User avatar danica.lubowitz88 says:

    5 stars
Just made this for my family and they loved it! So fresh and filling! 🍽️

  21. User avatar Frankie and Benjy says:

    4 stars
I don’t have a grill, can I bake the chicken instead? Seems like it could work too.

  22. User avatar eldridge.huel60 says:

    2 stars
Honestly, this sounds boring. Where’s the spice? Did you consider adding jalapenos?

  23. User avatar betty.kuhlman10 says:

    5 stars
5 stars. Easy weeknight meal and tastes like something from a café. My kid asked for seconds lol

  24. User avatar dorian.powlowski67 says:

    5 stars
Grilled chicken with avocado? Who knew it was that easy? Thanks for sharing!

  25. User avatar shelby.price says:

    3 stars
I’m confused why it says 2 tbsp olive oil but then 1 tsp salt and pepper—seemed like a dry rub situation. Still ate it though, lol. Chicken was flavorful but bread got soggy for me.

  26. User avatar hildegard.olson1952 says:

    5 stars
This sandwich was so good! I’ve made it twice already and my family loves it! 😍

  27. User avatar mollie.dibbert1964 says:

    2 stars
Why toast the bread? I skipped that step and it was still fine, just softer. Might be better toasted but yeah.

  28. User avatar billye.aufderhar says:

    2 stars
I don’t know about this recipe. Is grilled chicken really that good in a sandwich?

  29. User avatar esteban.kiehn23 says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight—super solid flavors. The garlic powder in the olive oil is the move. My chicken stayed juicy even after grilling.

  30. User avatar Shopkeeper says:

    1 star
Grilled chicken and avocado mixed together?! Ugh, no thanks. Not my thing.

  31. User avatar bobbie.thompson68 says:

    5 stars
This sandwich is a game changer! So simple but sooo delicious! 🤤

    1. 5 stars
I love how easy this recipe is! I can’t wait to try it this weekend. 🤩

  32. 5 stars
YUMMM!!! Avocado on anything is a win! 🥑❤️

  33. User avatar jess.haag99 says:

    1 star
Grilled chicken? Isn’t it like the same as fried chicken? What’s the point? 😕

    1. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

      5 stars
Grilled chicken is way healthier than fried! It’s less greasy and has more flavor. You should give this recipe a try! 😋

  34. User avatar tommie.runolfsson says:

    3 stars
Too much bread for me, I like my sandwiches smaller. I guess that’s just how I roll. But the chicken was good.

  35. 3 stars
I tried it but my chicken was too dry. What did I do wrong? Followed the recipe exactly.

  36. 4 stars
    Sandwich = good food.

  37. 4 stars
This is how I like my sandwiches. Simple and fresh! I’ll keep this recipe!

  38. User avatar Melvin Harvey PhD says:

    3 stars
It was ok, but the mayo was a bit much for me. I prefer mine without it.

    1. User avatar eleni.kuvalis0 says:

      4 stars
I totally get you! Too much mayo can overpower the flavors. Maybe try a light spread next time!

    2. 3 stars
What is mayo? Never used it. I think it’s better without. Just grilled chickn and avacado!

  39. User avatar Blade Brothers says:

    3 stars
I tried this but the chicken was dry. Maybe I grilled it too long?

  40. 3 stars
Bland at first bite… I think I under-salted? Next time I’ll do a bit more black pepper and maybe add paprika or something.

  41. 3 stars
I made this sandwich but used regular bread instead of whole wheat. It was okay, but I think whole wheat would’ve made it better.

  42. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! The flavors really pop, especially with the garlic powder. My family loved it!

  43. User avatar shakita.shields says:

    2 stars
Chicken breast? Why not use thigh? Thigh is tastier and it wouldn’t dry out so much!

  44. 4 stars
Tastes great! I was skeptical about the combo but it’s a winner! So glad I tried this.

  45. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    4 stars
I made this but used regular bread and it felt off. Whole wheat is better for sure!

  46. User avatar imogene.huel42 says:

    4 stars
I’m not a big fan of mayo, can I use mustard instead? 🤔

  47. User avatar Miss Dong Wisozk says:

    4 stars
I love the flavor profile—garlic powder + grilled chicken + fresh tomato is perfect. The bread toasted nicely too.

  48. User avatar Ms. Delaine Halvorson says:

    3 stars
    I have no grill… can I use a pan?

    1. 5 stars
Absolutely! Just make sure your pan is really hot. You’ll get a nice sear on the chicken that way.

    2. User avatar keneth.schuppe says:

      3 stars
I guess so, but won’t it be different? Grilled chicken has a smoky flavor or something.

  49. 4 stars
Really good, but I’d cut the mayo a bit next time. Also, I forgot to rest the chicken and it was slightly dry. Still tasted great though!

    1. User avatar Princess Zelda says:

      3 stars
Dry chicken even without resting? Wow, I feel that. I usually just grill it longer to “fix” it but maybe that’s backwards. Mayo I’d probably keep though—whole wheat needs the help lol.

    2. 5 stars
Glad you liked it! Cutting back on the mayo makes sense—4 tbsp is kinda a lot for some folks. Also, resting the chicken really helps with that dryness. Next time: 5 minutes off the grill 👍

  50. User avatar yellowjacket says:

    1 star
This is too healthy for me. Give me butter and bread any day! 😂

  51. 2 stars
I don’t understand why everyone loves this. The chicken was dry and the mayo made it too soggy. Not great.

  52. 1 star
Ok but why is everyone so hype about avocado? It’s just green mush. I don’t get it. 🤷‍♂️

  53. User avatar Ma'randru-jo says:

    5 stars
This sandwich is amazing! The avocado makes it so creamy. I don’t even like mayo but it works here!

    1. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Kwaltz says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! The avocado is the perfect touch. And I usually hate mayo too, but it just works in this recipe. ☺️

    2. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

      2 stars
I think mayo is gross… why would you put it on a sandwich? Might try without it next time.

  54. User avatar benjamin.murphy61 says:

    2 stars
My kids didn’t like it. They said it was ‘too green’ with the avocado. Idk if I’ll try this again. 🤷‍♀️

  55. 2 stars
Too many ingredients! I just wanted a simple sandwich. Mad at myself for trying this 😒

    1. 4 stars
I get it! Sometimes less is more. A simple grilled cheese could’ve done the trick. 😅

  56. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    4 stars
Nice, but where’s the garlic? Didn’t mention it!

  57. User avatar hong.gottlieb says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why you have to toast the bread. Seems unnecessary.

    1. 4 stars
But like, what if it’s a soggy mess without toasting? It just feels better when it’s crispy.

    2. User avatar rolando.marks29 says:

      5 stars
Toasting the bread gives it a nice crunch and makes the sandwich more enjoyable! Trust me, it’s worth it.

  58. User avatar aline.prosacco83 says:

    5 stars
SO GOOD! Plus, avocado and grilled chicken is like, a great combination for health!

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! Avocado and grilled chicken are the best! I can eat this every day!

    2. User avatar fred.cremin says:

      3 stars
It sounds good, but isn’t mayo a bit unhealthy? Maybe try it without?

  59. User avatar lakia.reinger4 says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe and messed up the grilling part. My chicken was dry. Any suggestions on how to fix that?

  60. User avatar elliot.cassin says:

    3 stars
I dunno, the mayo was too much for me. Maybe I would skip that part next time…

  61. User avatar emanuel.runolfsdottir says:

    5 stars
Yum!! Delicious! My new favorite lunch 😋

    1. User avatar sabina.grady10 says:

      5 stars
This sandwich sounds amazing! I need to try this recipe soon. 😍

    2. User avatar margarito.strosin41 says:

      3 stars
Looks good but isn’t grilled chicken kinda dry? Mayonaise helps tho I guess.

  62. User avatar Ms. Grady Swaniawski says:

    2 stars
Not a fan. The chicken was dry and the mayo was way too much for me!

  63. 3 stars
I tried it but my chicken was dry. Maybe I overcooked? Anyone else have that problem?

  64. User avatar jeremy.strosin says:

    5 stars
Wasn’t sure about the avocado but it actually made it taste good! My kids gobbled it up. 😋

  65. 2 stars
2 chicken breasts? I only got one. Will it spoil if I make less? Always confused with servings.

  66. User avatar scottie.cormier42 says:

    5 stars
Made this last night—super tasty. The garlic powder with the olive oil is a great combo, and grilling the chicken thinly makes it easy to bite through.

  67. User avatar Frodo Baggins says:

    4 stars
Not bad! I grilled the chicken a little longer because mine was thick, but the timing idea is solid. Whole wheat toast held up well.

  68. User avatar susie.funk58 says:

    5 stars
Best thing ever! The combination of avocados and chicken is just perfection. Will repeat for sure!

  69. 4 stars
Satisfying meal! I didn’t have whole wheat bread, so I used white. It turned out just fine!

  70. User avatar dee.corwin29 says:

    3 stars
Can I use regular bread? Whole wheat is hard to come by in my area. Also, what’s garlic powder??

  71. 2 stars
Eh, I prefer peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. At least I know what I’m gettin’ there. 😅

  72. User avatar sha.stroman90 says:

    3 stars
The instructions are clear, but I’m skeptical about mayonnaise with avocado—kinda heavy. Ended up using light mayo and it was fine.

  73. 5 stars
10/10! I’m not a cook or anything, but this was super simple and delicious. I feel like a chef lol.

    1. User avatar tami.ryan5 says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad you liked it! It’s really easy to make and such a great combo! 😄

    2. User avatar roy.rohan2014 says:

      2 stars
10/10? Are you sure? I mean, it’s just chicken and some bread. How can it be THAT good?

  74. 3 stars
I made this and forgot to add the mayo. It still tasted fine but I’m sure it would’ve been better the right way.

  75. User avatar Sue-Belle says:

    2 stars
I don’t like avocados, can I use cheese instead?

  76. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    1 star
Too complicated! I just wanted a quick sandwich. The grilling took forever and my bread burned.

  77. 5 stars
This was absolutely delicious! The flavors were perfect, and the avocado made it super creamy. Will definitely make again!

    1. 5 stars
I tried this recipe too, and it was SO good! The avocado really does make it creamy, right?!

  78. User avatar jarrett.langworth47 says:

    4 stars
Grilled Chicken and Avocado Sandwich? Sounds fancy but really easy to make. I like it a lot!

    1. User avatar tonja.weber1963 says:

      5 stars
I love this sandwich! Such a great mix of flavors. 👍

  79. User avatar valerie.mayer46 says:

    2 stars
Looks good, but I don’t think there’s enough flavor. Maybe add some chili or something?

    1. User avatar owen.lueilwitz27 says:

      4 stars
I think the seasoning is fine as is, but chili could add a zing! Worth a try!

  80. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

    4 stars
The mayo + avocado combo is kinda heaven. I added a squeeze of lemon because it felt like it needed brightness, and it totally leveled it up.

    1. 3 stars
I’m not sure about lemon with mayo—seems like it might get a little weird? But hey if it worked for you, I’ll try a tiny squeeze next time.

    2. User avatar graig.metz says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Lemon is such a good call—avocado can taste a bit rich/flat, and that brightness really pops.

  81. User avatar cordia.bailey says:

    3 stars
Pretty good, but I think 1 tsp salt might be a little too much if your chicken breasts are already well-seasoned or if they’re thicker. Mine came out slightly salty. Still ate it all though.

  82. User avatar Arden Orn says:

    5 stars
This was amazing! The flavors worked so well together. I couldn’t get enough!

  83. User avatar adan.mcdermott44 says:

    4 stars
Yumm! Perfect for lunch. I added some spicy mayo for a kick. Highly recommend!

  84. User avatar Thanatos says:

    3 stars
Could be 5-star if it wasn’t so plain. Next time I’ll add red pepper flakes or a squeeze of lemon on the avocado.

  85. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    2 stars
Grilled chicken for 6–8 minutes per side feels risky for me unless you’ve got thin breasts. Mine was thick and I ended up overcooking it. I’d say pound the chicken first.

  86. User avatar dortha.stamm28 says:

    4 stars
Simple and healthy! I love using whole wheat bread. Definitely making this again.

  87. User avatar Falmer Gloomlurker says:

    5 stars
“Let it rest for a few minutes” is real, my chicken was way more tender after. Also I forgot to toast the bread first… still good, but not as good.

  88. User avatar marsha.rowe58 says:

    5 stars
This sandwich was awesome! My kids loved it. Will make again for sure!

    1. User avatar regine.aufderhar says:

      5 stars
So glad to hear that! This recipe is a favorite in my house too!

  89. 2 stars
Too complicated for a sandwich! Just grill the chicken and throw it on bread, what’s with all the extras?

  90. User avatar basementDweller says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have olive oil, so I used butter. Still tasted great! Thanks for the recipe!

  91. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, cutting sandwiches in half is the best part lol. Texture was nice, but mine got a little messy because the avocado was too ripe.

    1. User avatar Prince Ralis says:

      3 stars
Mine did the same thing once… I think it’s because I used mayo too thick and the avocado was basically paste. Also I didn’t toast mine enough so it got soggy 😅 still tasted good but looked messy.

    2. User avatar mikel.prosacco says:

      5 stars
Lol yes—cutting them in half is totally the satisfying part 😄 Sorry about the messy avocado though. Next time I’d use a firmer one (or wait to slice it right before assembling).

  92. User avatar charissa.fisher says:

    4 stars
Okok good. I forgot to toast the bread tho and it was still fine. My bad.

    1. User avatar coreen.grady22 says:

      5 stars
Honestly that happens—glad it still turned out good! Toasting just helps with crunch, but flavor-wise you didn’t ruin anything.

    2. User avatar johnie.lueilwitz says:

      4 stars
Next time toast for sure 😅 whole wheat can get kinda bready/soft if you don’t. But hey, if it was fine then you’re good—just don’t forget again lol.

  93. User avatar jimmy.hauck says:

    4 stars
I liked it, but I wish it had a bit more seasoning on the sandwich itself. The mayo + avocado is good though—feels fresh.

  94. User avatar Anderson Parker says:

    5 stars
Just wow! I made this for dinner and it was better than expected.

    1. User avatar judy.dibbert50 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! I love that combo. What else did you serve with it?

  95. User avatar lynwood.hettinger says:

    2 stars
The ingredient list is so basic. Can’t believe it’s just chicken and some bread. Where’s the fun in that? I need something with more kick!

    1. User avatar Anthony Wisozk says:

      4 stars
Sometimes simple is best! You can always add your own spices or toppings for more flavor. Try some hot sauce, it’ll give it the kick you’re looking for!

  96. User avatar pablo.tremblay says:

    5 stars
This sandwich is amazing! The chicken was juicy and the avocado adds a nice creaminess. Will make again!

  97. User avatar Elvis Franecki says:

    4 stars
I’m usually picky about sandwiches, but this one works. The timing (6–8 min per side) was right for my grill. Next time I’ll maybe use a bit less mayo, but overall it’s a solid, fresh combo.

Totally agree—6–8 min per side feels spot on. I did rest time too and it stayed juicy. Next time I’ll also cut the mayo a bit, but the avocado/lettuce/tomato combo is great.

I tried it but my chicken took way longer, like closer to 12 min a side. Also I accidentally used Miracle Whip instead of mayo (oops) and it was still kinda good? The sandwich was messy though 😅

I tried it without mayo (because calories) and honestly it was kinda sad. Avocado alone didn’t do enough—will make again with mayo for sure.

Totally makes sense—mayo adds that creamy “glue” so the avocado doesn’t end up feeling dry or flat. Glad you’re giving it another go with it!

So easy! I didn’t measure the spices too perfectly and it still turned out great. My kids asked for seconds, lol.

I love avocado on sandwiches, so I was in. Whole wheat bread + toasted = crunchy. Would recommend adding a squeeze of lemon if you like it brighter.

Yummy 😋, but where’s the cheese? Add some cheese and it’s a game changer!

Made this tonight—super easy and the flavors actually pop. The garlic powder + mayo combo is a great sandwich vibe. I rested the chicken a bit longer and it stayed juicy.

I thought the recipe was simple, but the chicken didn’t cook through properly for me. I might try a longer grilling time next time.

I followed the recipe but my chicken came out dry. Was my grill too hot? 🤔

Bleh, this sandwich made me sick. I think the chicken was undercooked. Be careful people!

This sandwich is delicious but messy. The avocado slides out the sides like it has somewhere to be. Would make again for sure.
