Fried Green Tomatoes

April 24, 2024

Fried green tomatoes are a Southern delicacy that brings together the perfect balance of crispy, tangy, and savory. Whether you’re looking to add a twist to your next meal or craving a nostalgic bite, these golden, crunchy tomatoes are sure to satisfy your taste buds.

The key to making perfect fried green tomatoes is starting with firm, unripe tomatoes. Green tomatoes are less juicy and have a firmer texture than their red counterparts, making them ideal for frying. When you slice them into thick rounds, they hold up well during the frying process and develop a satisfying crunch on the outside while staying tender on the inside.

To get that perfect crispy coating, dip the tomato slices in a seasoned cornmeal and flour mixture. The cornmeal gives them that classic Southern texture and golden color, while the flour helps the coating adhere to the tomatoes. You can add spices like paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to the dredging mixture for extra flavor. If you like a bit of heat, a sprinkle of cayenne pepper works wonders.

Once the tomatoes are coated, fry them in hot oil until they’re golden and crispy on both sides. Be sure to drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil and keep them crispy.

Fried green tomatoes can be enjoyed on their own as a snack or appetizer, but they also make a great side dish for fried chicken, shrimp, or other Southern favorites. For a twist, serve them with a tangy remoulade or ranch dressing for dipping. They also make a fantastic topping for sandwiches, burgers, or salads.

This simple yet delicious dish captures the essence of Southern cooking and is sure to become a favorite in your kitchen. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, fried green tomatoes are a perfect balance of flavors and textures, making them a timeless treat worth trying.

Okay but… do you have to use green ones? I tried this with red tomatoes and it was a disaster lol. Learned my lesson.

  2. 1 star
Fried tomatoes? That’s just wrong. Stick with regular tomatoes people!!!

  3. User avatar Ludie Schowalter says:

    2 stars
Not a fan of these… I thought they would taste better. Kind of bland to me.

  4. User avatar Kiersten Mann PhD says:

    3 stars
Mine got a bit soggy after draining… I think I overcrowded the pan. Taste was good though. Any tips for keeping them crisp?

    1. User avatar carroll.fisher45 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, overcrowding kills the crunch. Fry in smaller batches so the oil stays hot—otherwise they steam and get soggy.

  5. User avatar deandre.buckridge says:

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about green tomatoes frying, but they tasted awesome. 2-3 minutes felt right—golden and not too greasy.

  6. User avatar Leto II Atreides says:

    4 stars
I used thicker tomato slices (like 1/2 inch) because I got lazy and they weren’t as crisp in the center. Lesson learned: slice thinner. Still delicious though.

  7. 4 stars
My coating kept falling off until I pressed harder after dredging. Also make sure the oil is hot—otherwise it just absorbs.

  8. User avatar thomas.crona says:

    4 stars
Fried tomatoes? Sounds crazy! But tried it anyway. Guess what, I actually liked it!

  9. User avatar marlo.schuster says:

    4 stars
I used coarse cornmeal and it gave me this awesome crunch. Also, frying time was closer to 4 minutes for my pan but that might be my stove.

The recipe is simple, but I’m confused about step 4—medium heat… like what, medium high? Mine browned too fast and the insides weren’t warm.

    1. User avatar booker.kshlerin66 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, “medium” is vague 😅 I usually do medium heat (about medium-low to medium, like 325–350°F if you’ve got a thermometer). If it browned too fast, your oil was probably hotter than the recipe means. Try frying a test slice—if it sizzles but doesn’t darken in under a minute, you’re close. Also, 1/4-inch rounds cook through fairly quick, but flipping/turning once and keeping it at a steady sizzle helps a lot.

I was skeptical but gave it a shot… they weren’t too bad! A bit mushy tho.

My mama used to make these, but she never put cayenne pepper. I think it ruins the taste! 🤔

  13. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    5 stars
These turned out super crispy! The cornmeal/flour combo is perfect, and the cayenne gives a nice little kick. I served them with ranch and they disappeared fast.

    1. User avatar mac.howell4 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Crispy is exactly right. I did mine in smaller slices and they came out crunchy like yours—ranch is a must 😄

  14. User avatar albert.padberg32 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! The seasoning is spot on, but mine came out a bit soft in the middle even though they were browned. I think I had the oil too cool.

  15. 3 stars
Just okay. I think it needed some spices or something. Lacked flavor for me. Maybe I needed to season more?

  16. User avatar clotilde.schroeder47 says:

Why do people even eat green tomatoes? They taste weird. I’ll stick to red.

  17. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

I ain’t ever seen fried tomatoes like this before. They look funny but taste great. ‘Merica!

  18. User avatar Micheal Kuvalis says:

Are green tomatoes even a thing? Why not use red ones? Sounds weird.

  19. User avatar Ford Prefect says:

Tried this recipe yesterday and they didn’t come out as crispy as I thought they would. Any tips?

    1. 2 stars
I don’t think they can ever be that crispy. Just eat them anyway! 😄

    2. User avatar kimberli.moen says:

      4 stars
Maybe try frying them a bit longer or at a higher heat? That’s what I do to make them crispy!

  20. User avatar drew.carter11 says:

    5 stars
1/4 inch slices were perfect. I turned once exactly like it says and they browned evenly. Great side dish!

  21. 2 stars
I tried this recipe and it was a total flop. They came out soggy, not crispy at all. What did I do wrong?

    1. User avatar robert.toy72 says:

      4 stars
Sorry to hear that! Maybe the oil wasn’t hot enough? It can make a big difference in getting them crispy.

    2. User avatar tyrone.cassin says:

      2 stars
I dunno, but I’ve never had that problem. Just follow the instructions and maybe it’s the tomatoes’ fault?

  22. User avatar mindi.zieme18 says:

    5 stars
My kids loved these. They kept eating them like fries. I added a little extra cayenne and served with ranch—10/10 would make again.

    Yum!

  24. User avatar rafael.kovacek23 says:

Y’all know these ain’t actual Tomatoes, right? Why fry them?? Just eat ’em fresh!

  25. 3 stars
I followed the measurements, but mine were kinda soggy. I might’ve overcrowded the pan. Still tasted good though—just not that crunchy vibe.

  26. 5 stars
These are so good! Can’t believe how easy it was! 😍

  27. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    5 stars
These were seriously good. The crunch from the cornmeal is perfect, and the little kick of cayenne makes them addictive. Didn’t change a thing—followed the 1/4-inch slices and they cooked evenly.

  28. 5 stars
Yummm! If you fry anything, it will taste good! 👍

  29. 4 stars
Cayenne pepper??? lol I didn’t expect it to be spicy. Still, it kinda works. 2 words: Actually tasty.

  30. 2 stars
This is basically just fried veggie rounds, right? I mean it’s tasty, but not some magical southern secret.

  31. User avatar Barry Manilow says:

    3 stars
I don’t know, they were too oily for me. Might’ve used too much oil. *shrug*

  32. User avatar torri.goldner35 says:

    4 stars
Yum! I’ve never had fried green tomatoes before, but it was easy to make and really tasty. I added some garlic powder too!

  33. User avatar janelle.mohr1987 says:

    5 stars
These were delicious! Made them for my family and they couldn’t get enough. Will definitely make again.

    1. User avatar Great Moblin says:

      2 stars
Delicious? Really? I tried this recipe and it wasn’t that great. Maybe I’m just not a fan of fried green tomatoes.

    2. User avatar sammy.kovacek says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad to hear that! They’re a family favorite in my house too. What dipping sauce did you use?

  34. User avatar Rosie Peach says:

    2 stars
Meh, not great. I think I prefer them with ketchup instead, lol!

  35. User avatar Judith Gleichner says:

    5 stars
Awesome recipe! Used heirloom tomatoes from my garden, they were fresh and delicious. Highly recommend!

    1. 5 stars
Sounds delicious! I love using garden-fresh tomatoes. Can’t wait to try this recipe!

  36. 4 stars
Recipe is solid, but 2-3 minutes felt a bit short for my skillet. I went closer to 4 and they browned better.

    1. User avatar kendal.dibbert1976 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! 2-3 minutes was too fast on my skillet too—closer to 4 got them actually golden and not pale. Love this recipe though.

    2. User avatar jermaine.cartwright92 says:

      4 stars
I dunno, mine browned fine in 2-3, but I had the oil hotter. Maybe it depends on the pan. Still tasted great.

  37. User avatar emmie.feest1969 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly, but mine came out kind of soggy. I think my oil wasn’t hot enough, and I didn’t let them drain long enough.

    1. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      5 stars
Ugh, I’m sorry—soggy fried green tomatoes usually comes from oil temp or not draining long enough. Medium heat can be too gentle; I go closer to medium-high and wait till the oil shimmers. Also, I do 1-2 extra minutes off heat on paper towels (or a wire rack) so they crisp back up.

    2. User avatar emma.dach1950 says:

      3 stars
Maybe you need to dry the tomatoes first? I swear my tomatoes have water in them. Also I think 2-3 mins is too short, mine browns faster. I used regular milk once and it was worse 😅

  38. User avatar giuseppe.zemlak says:

    2 stars
Why buttermilk? Wouldn’t egg do the same thing? I used egg and it was fine, I guess. Not mad, just wondering.

  39. User avatar Gag Halfrunt says:

    4 stars
Super easy recipe! Buttermilk made it moister and I added some garlic powder too. Yum!

  40. User avatar Feral Falmer says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe but they didn’t fry well. Maybe I used too much oil? Not sure what I did wrong.

  41. User avatar kristina.corwin says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have buttermilk, so I used milk + a squeeze of lemon. Honestly it still worked and tasted good.

    1. 3 stars
Wait… lemon can’t really replace buttermilk, can it? 😅 But if you say it worked and tasted good, I guess it’s worth trying. What kind of milk did you use?

    2. User avatar emile.jerde1995 says:

      5 stars
Nice! I’ve done the milk + lemon trick before for similar recipes and it usually mimics buttermilk pretty well. Glad it still came out good.

  42. User avatar antonia.collins13 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about using green tomatoes. But the texture is fantastic and it tastes like a real Southern side dish.

    1. User avatar aaron.wisozk22 says:

      5 stars
Same here—I always thought green tomatoes would be kinda tart and weird, but frying them really turns it around. That cornmeal crust is 🔥. Definitely a Southern side I’d make again.

    2. User avatar San Shenlong says:

      3 stars
I tried this and it was… ok? My coating didn’t stick super well, and I think I cut them too thick. Also my green tomatoes were really sour so it tasted kinda sharp. Still not bad though!

  43. User avatar cristi.hermiston90 says:

    2 stars
Eh. Too much breading for me. Also, why cayenne with tomatoes? I know it’s probably traditional but it tasted kinda spicy for no reason.

    1. 4 stars
I totally get that—there’s a lot of crumb coating. If you want less breading, try a lighter dredge (or only cornmeal) and make sure you shake off the excess before frying.

  44. 5 stars
Yummm!!! This recipe is like heaven! Please try it! You won’t regret it.

  45. 4 stars
Pretty good, but I wish it had instructions for how hot the oil should be. I guessed and some pieces browned faster than others.

  46. 3 stars
Not bad, but 2–3 minutes felt short for my pan. I had to go closer to 4 to get that deep brown color. Maybe my oil temp was off.

  47. User avatar cordell.mcclure0 says:

    4 stars
I never tried fried green tomatoes b4, but this recipe got me hooked! So good!

    1. 2 stars
I don’t know, they seem too weird. Green tomatoes? Really? Idk if I would like them…

    2. User avatar kymberly.kunde says:

      5 stars
Fried green tomatoes are the best! I’m so glad you enjoyed this recipe! 🍅

  48. User avatar Feral Falmer says:

    3 stars
Not sure about frying… I mean, green tomatoes are kinda tart, so with this much pepper it was almost too intense. Maybe scale the cayenne down for sure.

  49. User avatar lenny.rolfson1972 says:

    5 stars
These were amazing! Crispy and full of flavor. Will definitely make again.

  50. User avatar mira.kessler86 says:

    4 stars
Not bad at all! The coating stayed on pretty well, but next time I’ll slice the tomatoes a hair thinner for more even browning.

  51. User avatar timothy.casper33 says:

    5 stars
This is comfort food for sure. I served them with remoulade and it tasted like something from a fancy Southern place. Great ratio of cornmeal to flour.

  52. User avatar Jayson Schuster says:

    1 star
No. Green tomatoes are for pickles. 😅

  53. User avatar Shamika Wintheiser says:

    1 star
Just a waste of good tomatoes… Sorry, but this meal didn’t work for me. 😞

  54. 5 stars
These were shockingly good—crispy outside, tangy inside. I used a bit more cayenne and it kicked up the flavor perfectly.

  55. User avatar lizette.nicolas52 says:

    1 star
Wasn’t impressed, I thought they would be crunchier! More like mushy green circles. 1 star.

  56. User avatar fritz.ratke says:

    3 stars
I used regular milk instead of buttermilk and… it wasn’t the same. Still good, but the tang matters. Don’t skip it.

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree—the tang from buttermilk makes it. I tried skipping it once and it tasted kinda flat to me, like just fried cornmeal. This recipe needs the buttermilk.

    2. User avatar nikki.kub says:

      4 stars
Wait, could I use sour cream + milk instead? I don’t always have buttermilk on hand, but I’m not trying to ruin the flavor. Still, your tip makes sense.

  57. User avatar art.runolfsson says:

    5 stars
So delicious! My grandma used to make these for me. Brings back memories. 😊

  58. User avatar luciana.ebert74 says:

    4 stars
Nothin like fried green tomatos! Tried it for a family gathering and it was a hit! So easy too!

  59. User avatar ethelyn.champlin84 says:

    5 stars
These were amazing! Perfectly crispy and so tasty!

  60. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    4 stars
Tastes like diner food. I served with ranch and it was a whole hit. The cornmeal crust is the best part.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—this does taste like that classic diner comfort food. The cornmeal crust is the star, and ranch really makes it pop. I’ll be making these again for sure.

    2. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

      3 stars
Hmm I tried it but mine weren’t as crispy—maybe I needed hotter oil? Also I only had regular milk so I used that with a little vinegar and it came out kinda… weird. Still tasty though!

  61. User avatar tod.little42 says:

    5 stars
Fried em just like grandma used to! Took me back to my childhood, thank you! ❤️

    1. User avatar alan.lakin24 says:

      5 stars
So glad it brought back those memories! Fried green tomatoes are the best! 🌟

  62. 5 stars
Ok, I’m skeptical of “green tomatoes,” but wow. My family ate them like fries. I served with ranch and it was gone fast.

    1. 5 stars
I was skeptical too—green tomatoes always sounded like a weird side dish—but the buttermilk + cornmeal combo is legit. Crunchy and tangy. 10/10 with ranch!

    2. 3 stars
Wait… you can just fry green tomatoes like normal? My aunt said they have to be super ripe or they taste bitter, so I never tried. How do yours not come out sour?

  63. User avatar tod.beahan30 says:

    5 stars
Wow. First time cooking green tomatoes and I’m converted. My kid ate them without complaining (huge win).

  64. 2 stars
Cornmeal + buttermilk sounds weird to me, but okay. Mine tasted a little bland even with salt/pepper, maybe I need more seasoning in the flour mix.

  65. User avatar Lacy Armstrong says:

    3 stars
They came out golden but not super crispy. I think next time I’ll rest the breaded slices for a few minutes before frying so the coating sticks better.

    1. User avatar inger.little says:

      3 stars
Hmm mine were crispy tho 🤷‍♂️ Maybe it’s the tomatoes? If they’re too wet it wont crisp. I pat mine dry with paper towels. Also 2-3 min felt a bit short for me, i went a lil longer.

    2. User avatar samuel.fisher1954 says:

      5 stars
That makes sense—resting usually helps the coating grab on. I’ve had the same thing happen when I fry right after dredging. Try a short rest while the oil heats up and you’ll probably get crispier edges.

  66. User avatar joshua.runolfsdottir20 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get it, green tomatoes? They’re basically unripe. But okay… I tried and they were better than expected. Would make again, lol.

    1. User avatar jc.spinka1984 says:

      5 stars
Same! I was skeptical at first, but the frying + seasoning really fixes the tartness. 🙌

  67. 1 star
Ugh, this recipe is so basic, everyone knows how to fry things. Get creative!

    1. User avatar Mason Jarr says:

      5 stars
I think it’s a classic for a reason! Sometimes simple is best, especially if you get the frying right. 😋

    2. User avatar johnathon.kshlerin37 says:

      4 stars
Basic? Maybe, but some people just wanna enjoy some good fried tomatoes! Not everything needs to be fancy.

  68. User avatar buster.nader says:

    2 stars
I made this recipe and the tomatoes turned out soggy!! Like, did I do something wrong? I followed it!

    1. User avatar summer.koepp48 says:

      4 stars
It could be the type of tomatoes you used. Sometimes ripe tomatoes can get a bit mushy. Try firmer ones next time!

  69. User avatar Paula Nancy Millstone Jennings says:

    2 stars
Who puts cayenne pepper in fried tomatoes? That sounds weird!

  70. User avatar Questular Rontok says:

    5 stars
These were amazing! Crispy and so flavorful. My family loved them!

  71. User avatar raleigh.hessel59 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and it turned out bland. Maybe my tomatoes weren’t really green (or too thick). Still, the crunch was there.

    1. 4 stars
I’ve had that happen too—if the tomatoes aren’t really “green” or if they’re too thick, they won’t get that punchy flavor. Did you try frying a thicker/fresher batch in a slightly hotter pan? Also seasoning the cornmeal mixture more (or a little garlic powder) can help a lot.

  72. User avatar christen.mayer says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe, but they came out super oily. What did I do wrong?

  73. User avatar jewell.runolfsdottir8 says:

    2 stars
I think you need to salt the tomatoes first or they wont crisp. Also mine stuck a little to the skillet, maybe I didn’t let oil heat fully.

    1. User avatar Daedric Prince says:

      4 stars
Interesting—mine didn’t crisp from salting the tomatoes first, they kind of got wetter. I just make sure the oil is really hot before frying and that I press the coating on good.

  74. User avatar min.hackett30 says:

    5 stars
These were surprisingly good—crispy outside, tangy inside. Followed the 1/4-inch slices and they browned perfectly. Will make again with a little hot sauce.

  75. User avatar alyse.cormier70 says:

    4 stars
Super easy to make! My kids loved it, I’ll definitely be making this again! 😍

  76. 5 stars
These turned out so crispy! I let them sit on the paper towel a minute longer and the coating stayed crunchy. Yum.

  77. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
I think buttermilk is overkill. I had no buttermilk so I used regular milk and lemon juice and it worked, but not as tangy. Still crispy!

  78. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about frying tomato rounds, but they were honestly addictive. Next time I’m adding a little garlic powder to the dry mix.

  79. User avatar ben.feeney46 says:

    3 stars
Just ok. My family didn’t like them. They said they taste like fried mush. Maybe I should stick with regular tomatoes.

    1. User avatar nieves.christiansen6 says:

      2 stars
Fried mush? Like, did you cook them right? They should be crispy! I think you just need better tomatoes or maybe less oil.

    2. User avatar takisha.koepp68 says:

      4 stars
I’m sorry to hear that! I love fried green tomatoes, but they are definitely not for everyone. Maybe you could try a different recipe or seasoning next time?

  80. User avatar albert.harris77 says:

    5 stars
These were amazing! First time trying fried green tomatoes and I couldn’t believe how crunchy they turned out. 5 stars!

    1. User avatar stephen.haag60 says:

I’m glad you loved them! Fried green tomatoes have such a unique flavor when done right.

    2. User avatar Death Hound says:

Never heard of this before! Are they really that good? Sounds kinda weird to me.

  81. User avatar kathaleen.collier1993 says:

Why do people fry tomatoes? Aren’t they suppose to be in salads? This sounds weird.

    1. User avatar Dr. Georgiana Rippin says:

      5 stars
Frying tomatoes is a Southern classic! It’s crispy and delicious. You should give it a try!

  82. User avatar seema.carter says:

    4 stars
Really nice flavor. Mine stuck a bit when I didn’t press the coating in hard enough, so I’d definitely press more next time. Still turned out golden and tasty.

  83. User avatar cruz.bradtke54 says:

    4 stars
Delish! Super easy to make but I think next time I’ll add some garlic powder to the mix.

  84. User avatar delfina.auer37 says:

    5 stars
My family devoured these. I used low-fat buttermilk and it still worked. Definitely a comfort-food vibe.

  85. User avatar Desire Gibson says:

    1 star
I don’t understand why anyone would eat fried green tomatoes. Just eat regular tomatoes, right?

    1. User avatar curtis.jacobson57 says:

Fried green tomatoes have a unique taste! They’re crispy and delicious. You should try making them once!

  86. User avatar salvatore.bailey1978 says:

These are the best fried green tomatoes I’ve ever had! So crispy and delicious.

  87. User avatar Laurice Beahan says:

    5 stars
Honestly never understood fried green tomatoes… until now. The cornmeal crust is the best part. I ate way too many.

  88. User avatar Miss Fortune says:

    5 stars
So I tried it and it was kinda bland at first. Then I realized I forgot the cayenne (oops). With cayenne it’s way better. Will make again for sure.

    1. 3 stars
I feel like green tomatoes are just… kinda sour no matter what. I tried a recipe similar and it still tasted bland to me unless I added more salt. Did you add any extra seasoning besides cayenne?

Haha that cayenne makes total sense. I always underestimate how much the heat boosts the flavor in breading like this—glad it worked out!

Yummy! I served them with ranch dressing on the side. Best snack ever! 🥳

    1. 3 stars
Not sure if green tomatoes are the best snack… fried pickles are better😉.

Ranch dressing sounds awesome with those! I gotta try that. 🤤

This recipe is a classic southern treat! Perfect crunchy texture and the spices were just right. A+!

2-3 minutes seems short—mine took closer to 5 to brown. Could be my stove, but just saying don’t trust the timer blindly.

  92. User avatar noel.haley62 says:

Good flavor, but mine got a bit soggy after a few minutes. Next time I’ll fry closer to serving and maybe keep them on a wire rack instead of just paper towels.

  93. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

I followed it exactly, except my tomatoes were smaller, so they took a bit longer. The coating stuck well, and they tasted like a diner version.

  94. User avatar Rosendo Carroll says:

I’m skeptical about green tomatoes frying… but wow. The cayenne and pepper actually make it. Next time I’ll add garlic powder to the dredge.

Is there any alternative for the buttermilk? I can’t find it where I live.

  96. 2 stars
I don’t know why people like these so much. They taste kinda weird. Not for me.

I tried this recipe but the tomatoes were too soggy. Maybe I did somethin wrong. 🤔

Simple & tasty! Kids even liked it. Will make again! 🙂

Hmm, you sure this is the right way? I always heard to use panko instead of cornmeal, but whatever!

    1. 4 stars
I think cornmeal works great! Panko might be too crunchy for these, but it’s all about preference. Try it both ways! 😊

I don’t know, they looked funny to me. Green tomatoes? Really? I prefer red ones. No thanks.

  101. User avatar Andreas Abbott says:

Not bad, but 2-3 minutes feels short. I had to fry closer to 4-5 min to really brown and cook through.

    1. User avatar Ms. Mathilda Lehner says:

      5 stars
Totally fair—mine also takes longer depending on tomato thickness and pan heat. I usually go by “golden + tender,” not the clock. 4–5 min sounds right.

  102. 2 stars
I followed it exactly and it was okay… just not my thing. The spice level felt too sharp with the cayenne for me, and I prefer them less crunchy. Maybe I’ll try without pepper.

  103. User avatar Teddy Prohaska says:

These are the best fried green tomatoes I’ve ever made! The cayenne gives it a nice kick. Yum!

  104. User avatar ramon.thompson14 says:

I followed it exactly and the coating slid off a few slices. Maybe my tomatoes were too wet? Still ate them, but not as “golden” as the description.

    1. User avatar clayton.jacobs18 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, wet tomatoes will mess with the coating. I usually pat mine super dry (or even let them sit on a towel for 10 min) before dredging, and it sticks way better. Also make sure the oil is fully hot before frying.

    2. User avatar tommy.pagac28 says:

      3 stars
Mine did that too once—turns out I didn’t press hard enough into the cornmeal. Also maybe my buttermilk was watery? I think the “golden” thing depends on high heat and not crowding the pan. Still tastes good though 😅

These are the best fried green tomatoes I’ve ever tasted! I doubled the cayenne for extra kick! 🌶️

  106. 3 stars
I tried it, but my tomatoes were way too thick and the middle was still crunchy raw. Next time I’ll slice thinner for sure.

  107. 4 stars
Pretty good recipe, but I think 4 tomatoes is way too much oil work—next time I’ll use fewer and make thicker slices. Still tasted great though.

  108. User avatar erick.schinner says:

The seasoning is on point—salt, pepper, cayenne. But mine came out greasy even with paper towels. I think my oil heat was too low.

  109. 4 stars
Simple and delicious. The cayenne is a nice kick. Next time I might add a touch of garlic powder to the cornmeal mix.

  110. 3 stars
I followed it exactly, but mine were a bit soggy in the middle. Maybe my oil wasn’t hot enough or I crowded the pan—worth trying again.

  111. User avatar soraya.waters26 says:

    5 stars
These were *so* crispy. I didn’t expect the cornmeal to make that much difference, but wow. My pan got a little crowded so I’ll definitely fry in smaller batches next time.

  112. User avatar frederic.borer says:

One word: yum. 😅 Crispy outside, soft inside—super easy!

  113. User avatar Arthur Philip Deodat says:

    3 stars
Mine stuck to the pan a little and some pieces came out uneven. I think my oil wasn’t hot enough, but overall still tasty. Also, 1/4 inch slices is hard with my knife skills lol.

    1. User avatar jenise.flatley says:

      5 stars
Oof, I’ve had that happen too 😅. If the oil isn’t fully hot, the coating gets soggy and grabs the pan. I usually test with a tiny sprinkle of cornmeal—if it sizzles right away, you’re good. Also, letting them drain a second after dredging helps the crust set.

    2. User avatar antonio.anderson1952 says:

      3 stars
My knife skills are the same lol. I kinda do thicker slices and they still turn out, but yours sticking sounds like the heat or pan surface. Next time try medium-high instead of medium and don’t crowd the skillet. Also, maybe don’t press too hard or it’ll make pasty bits.

  114. User avatar arlie.skiles73 says:

    5 stars
These were amazing with a squeeze of lemon and a dollop of mayo/aioli. The crust stayed crisp way longer than expected too.

  115. User avatar woodrow.torphy1950 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! My first batch stuck a bit, but I think I let the oil get too cool. Once I waited for it to properly heat, they turned out way better.

Made these last night—crispy outside, tangy in the middle. The cayenne is perfect. I didn’t have buttermilk so I used regular milk + a splash of vinegar and it still worked!

    1. User avatar erinn.kris13 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! “crispy outside, tangy in the middle” is exactly what I’m chasing with these. Glad the cayenne worked for you—next time I’ll probably add just a pinch more.

    2. User avatar Columbus Schneider says:

      3 stars
I tried this but I did milk + vinegar too and mine got kinda soggy… maybe I used the oil too low? Still tasted good though. Any tips on keeping it crisp?

  117. 3 stars
Good flavor, but mine got a little soggy in the middle. Maybe my tomatoes were too juicy or I crowded the pan—still tasty though.

    1. 3 stars
Happened to me too 😅 I thought ‘juicy tomatoes’ was the whole issue but mine were also too thick. I’m gonna try thinner slices next time… like 1/8 inch. Still tasty, just not as crispy!

    2. 5 stars
That sounds like the oil temp or spacing more than the flavor. If the pan’s crowded, they steam and go soggy in the middle—try frying in smaller batches and make sure the oil is nice and hot before you start.

  118. User avatar deidre.gislason1991 says:

These turned out so crispy! The cornmeal + buttermilk combo is doing the heavy lifting. I added a little garlic powder to the dredge and it was perfect.

  119. User avatar lilia.graham says:

These came out perfectly golden and crispy. The cayenne is just enough kick without overpowering. 10/10 comfort food!

  120. 3 stars
Very easy to follow, but my tomatoes fell apart when frying. Maybe I did somethin’ wrong.
