Chocolate Cream Pie

October 22, 2024

Chocolate Cream Pie is the ultimate dessert for chocolate lovers, offering a rich, velvety chocolate filling nestled in a flaky, buttery pie crust. This decadent treat is made with a silky smooth chocolate custard topped with a generous layer of whipped cream, creating the perfect balance of creamy, airy, and crunchy textures. Whether served at a family gathering, a special occasion, or as a sweet end to a weeknight meal, this pie is sure to satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth.

The base of a Chocolate Cream Pie starts with a buttery pie crust, which can be homemade or store-bought. The crust is crisp and flaky, providing a perfect contrast to the rich, creamy filling. The filling is made with high-quality cocoa powder or melted chocolate, sugar, milk, and eggs. It’s cooked until thickened, then chilled to set, creating a luxurious, dense chocolate filling that practically melts in your mouth. The deep chocolate flavor is both comforting and indulgent, without being overwhelming.

What makes this pie extra special is the whipped cream topping. A generous layer of freshly whipped cream crowns the pie, adding a light, airy sweetness that balances the rich chocolate filling. For extra flair, you can garnish the pie with chocolate shavings, cocoa powder, or even a few chocolate curls for a touch of elegance.

Chocolate Cream Pie is easy to make but feels indulgent, which makes it perfect for any occasion. It’s also incredibly versatile, you can add flavors like vanilla or coffee to the filling for a unique twist or incorporate a dash of liqueur for an adult version. Some people even like to make an Oreo crust instead of a traditional pie crust for extra chocolatey goodness.

This pie can be made ahead of time, as it needs a few hours to chill in the fridge before serving, making it an ideal make-ahead dessert for parties or gatherings. The combination of rich chocolate and smooth, airy whipped cream creates a comforting dessert that is both luxurious and satisfying, offering the perfect sweet ending to any meal.

Could you really call this “pie” if it’s basically pudding? 😂 But yes, it’s tasty and chocolate is strong.

  2. 4 stars
Looks delicious! I can’t wait to try this for my daughter’s birthday next week!

  3. User avatar grisel.weber says:

    4 stars
Not really a fan… thought it would be more chocolatey. Maybe add more cocoa?

    1. 4 stars
I get what you mean! More cocoa could definitely boost the chocolate flavor! 🥳

  4. User avatar rocky.okon2018 says:

    5 stars
Chocolate? YES! Pie? Absolutely! Can’t stop eating it! 😍

  5. 5 stars
Yup, this is definitely my go-to dessert now!

    1. 3 stars
I tried it but found it a bit too sweet for my taste. Maybe less sugar next time?

    2. 5 stars
Glad to hear it! It’s my favorite too. So rich and creamy!

  6. User avatar Anita Keebler IV says:

    4 stars
The pie crust part is important! I used a store-bought one and it stayed crisp after chilling, which surprised me. Filling is rich and creamy, but I thought it could be a touch thicker.

  7. User avatar oren.pollich20 says:

I can’t bake but this was easy to follow! I didn’t believe it would work but it did!

I’m so glad to hear that! Baking can be intimidating, but your success gives hope to those like me who struggle. Can’t wait to try it myself!

I thought this was supposed to be a cake? Why is it in a crust? 🤔

  9. User avatar vance.sporer77 says:

This is my grandma’s recipe! Brought back memories. Love it! ❤️

  10. 5 stars
Way easier than I expected. The “2 minutes after thickened” part was key. Flavor is rich without being too sweet.

    1. User avatar geoWizard says:

      5 stars
I tried this and the “2 minutes after thickened” tip saved it. It finally set like a real cream pie, not pudding. Rich and not cloying—exactly what I wanted.

    2. User avatar marshall.murphy says:

      3 stars
Wait, I cooked it until it thickened but I didn’t do the extra 2 minutes after… so mine was kinda runny. I’ll redo it though, because the flavor is really chocolatey. Thanks for the heads up!

  11. User avatar spring.smitham1985 says:

    3 stars
I thought it was too sweet. Maybe cut down the sugar next time? Not bad, though.

  12. User avatar suellen.miller2020 says:

    2 stars
Not to be that person but my pie never really set. I followed the steps, chilled it overnight too. Maybe my heat was too low or my yolks weren’t enough? Still tasted nice, just runny.

  13. User avatar nathanial.bins says:

    5 stars
Made this for my family and it turned out super silky and chocolatey. The chilling time is key—4 hours minimum! Great balance of sweetness too.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—4 hours really makes the texture. I tried rushing it once and it was way looser. Yours sounds spot on though!

  14. User avatar deandre.fadel26 says:

    2 stars
Not sure if I did something wrong, but mine got lumpy even though I whisked in the milk gradually. Maybe my cocoa was clumpy? Still edible though.

  15. 2 stars
I found the recipe a bit confusing. Not sure if I did something wrong, but mine didn’t thicken. Wouldn’t recommend unless you’re experienced.

  16. User avatar shana.johns16 says:

    5 stars
This is the best chocolate cream pie EVER!! I can’t stop eating it!

  17. User avatar Gurney Halleck says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! Chocolate flavor is nice and rich. Mine took a little longer to thicken, so next time I’ll cook until it truly coats the spoon, not just by time.

  18. 2 stars
Easy to make, but I messed up the crust and it crumbled. Anyone got tips for that?

  19. User avatar leslee.cole77 says:

    3 stars
Too much sugar for my taste. I like it more dark chocolate. Maybe I’ll try adjustin the sugar next time.

  20. 5 stars
This pie was a hit at our family gathering! So rich and creamy. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar woodrow.hills says:

      3 stars
Rich and creamy? But it seems kinda easy. How can it be that good? Not sure, I’ll stick to my apple pie.

    2. 5 stars
Sounds delicious! Can’t wait to try it myself. Glad it was a hit!

  21. User avatar arlie.nitzsche1991 says:

    5 stars
Perfect for gatherings! I added some chocolate shavings on top. Yum!

    2. User avatar joellen.bartoletti1979 says:

      3 stars
Are you sure it’s that creamy? I find many recipes claim that but they don’t match up. 🤔

  23. User avatar giuseppe.weimann56 says:

    4 stars
Chocolate cream pie? Love it but why no fruit? Would be perfect with some berries!

  24. User avatar demetrius.wunsch2011 says:

    5 stars
I made this last weekend and it actually set up perfectly after the 4 hours. The chocolate flavor is rich but not bitter—exactly what I wanted. Will definitely make again!

  25. User avatar Carin Monahan says:

    1 star
I followed it exactly and it turned out bland. Like, chocolate flavor was there but weak. Maybe my cocoa was old? Or I should’ve added more butter? Idk.

  26. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    5 stars
Made this last night—so rich and chocolatey. The “2 minutes after thickened” step was key. Mine set perfectly after chilling too.

  27. User avatar jamaal.okuneva says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe but my filling didn’t thicken at all! I must’ve done something wrong. 😔

  28. 3 stars
I thought the pie needed more cocoa. It was chocolatey but could use a boost, ya know? Next time I’ll add more.

  29. User avatar reyes.wehner says:

    2 stars
This says “let it chill at least 4 hours,” but after only 2 my slice still slid. So yeah, it’s real—needs the time. Also I used sweetened cocoa by mistake once… don’t do that.

    1. User avatar ervin.walsh1966 says:

      5 stars
Yep, chilling time matters a lot. I once cut it too early and it was basically chocolate soup 😅—4 hours is the minimum for sure.

  30. User avatar belle.ohara58 says:

    4 stars
I accidentally boiled it too hard and it still kinda worked? The texture was more pudding-like than pie, but delicious.

  31. User avatar thaddeus.gutmann says:

    2 stars
Not impressed. Tasted kinda bland to me. Maybe add more cocoa?

  32. User avatar joaquina.schmeler63 says:

    4 stars
I made this pie but used almond milk instead. Came out great! Just a lil different flavor.

  33. 3 stars
Why do you need to let it chill for 4 hours? Can’t you eat it right away? Seems silly.

    1. 4 stars
Letting it chill helps everything set properly! If you eat it right away, it might be too runny and not taste as good. Just my opinion!

    2. User avatar arnulfo.strosin20 says:

      2 stars
4 hours? Who has that kind of time? I’d rather just dive in! 😂

  34. 3 stars
I followed it exactly and it turned out kinda bland? Cocoa flavor was there, but I wanted more punch. Maybe my cocoa was weak.

  35. 5 stars
Incredible pie! Used whole milk instead of just milk and it was soooo good.

  36. User avatar sunshine.cronin57 says:

    5 stars
Pie crust? I just used some cookies crushed up for the base instead, lol! Tasted great!

  37. User avatar shasta.stoltenberg1961 says:

    5 stars
This pie is to die for! So rich and chocolatey. Definitely a family favorite now!

  38. User avatar jame.ruecker5 says:

    5 stars
Five stars! The custard thickened fast and the filling is smooth like store-bought. I’m making it again for the holidays.

  39. 5 stars
Chocolate good. I like! Makes me happy. 🥳

  40. 4 stars
Tasted like heaven! Will be making this again! 🍫🥧

  41. User avatar Dr. Sherwood Prosacco says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I think 4 hours isn’t long enough—mine was soft when we cut it. Also I used vanilla paste instead of extract; not sure if that matters.

    1. 4 stars
Good point! I’ve always found that chocolate pies need more than 4 hours for clean slices—mine was definitely softer too. I’d try closer to 6–8 hours next time and see how it cuts.

    2. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      4 stars
vanilla paste vs extract usually ok, but paste can be stronger—could change flavor a bit. as for time… 4 hours might be okay but depends how warm your kitchen is. i’d just chill overnight lol

  42. 5 stars
This pie is sooo good! My kids love it. 💖

  43. User avatar lenna.lang82 says:

    2 stars
Well, I was expecting more chocolate flavor. Disappointed.

  44. User avatar arianna.beier1969 says:

    5 stars
Made this for Thanksgiving and it was a total hit. The cocoa custard sets perfectly after the 4 hours—rich, smooth, not overly sweet. I added a little pinch of salt too and it really boosted the chocolate flavor.

  45. 5 stars
This pie is absolutely amazing! So rich and chocolatey. My family devoured it!

  46. User avatar hortensia.grimes68 says:

    2 stars
Tried this recipe and burned the chocolate yikes! Not my day. 😅

  47. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    2 stars
This is too much effort for pie. I mean, I followed it and it was okay, but I’d rather just buy chocolate pudding. Also my whipped cream deflated by the time I served.

    1. User avatar marvin.okon1965 says:

      4 stars
I totally get it—pie recipes can feel like a whole project. If you’re cool with store-bought pudding, that’s honestly the most time-efficient route. Sorry your whipped cream deflated though—did it maybe sit too long or warm up while the pie chilled?

  48. User avatar devin.mraz48 says:

    2 stars
I didn’t have enough cocoa so I used a mix with chocolate syrup. Honestly it was sweeter than I wanted, but still yummy.

  49. User avatar Dominick Altenwerth says:

    5 stars
This turned out super silky and chocolatey—my family went back for seconds. I chilled mine overnight and it set perfectly.

  50. User avatar Kennith Donnelly says:

    5 stars
Perfect for my chocolate cravings! This is going to be my go-to recipe. 🍫

  51. User avatar Wispmother says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, 2 cups milk + 3 egg yolks feels like it should be more creamy? Mine set, but it was more like pudding than pie filling. Maybe I undercooked.

  52. 3 stars
A little bit sweet for my taste, but still tasty. Will try less sugar next time.

    1. 4 stars
I thought it was perfect! Maybe try dark chocolate next time for richness?

  53. 2 stars
I tried making this and it didn’t set properly. I followed the instructions but something went wrong.

  54. User avatar Mellie Gaylord says:

    4 stars
Delicious! I added some mint extract for a twist and it was a hit at the party!

  55. User avatar caroll.sporer2022 says:

    5 stars
I added some crushed nuts on top and it was a hit! So good!

    1. User avatar Bowerick Wowbagger says:

      5 stars
That sounds delicious! I never thought to add nuts, but I bet it gives it a nice crunch. I’m trying this next time!

    2. 2 stars
Nuts? Really? I thought this was suppose to be a creamy dessert, not crunchy! Not sure if I like that idea.

  56. User avatar lettie.weber52 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe but it didn’t thicken up for me. What did I do wrong?

    1. User avatar Sapphire says:

      4 stars
Maybe you didn’t cook it long enough. It needs to boil to thicken properly.

    2. User avatar bruno.hilpert2014 says:

      2 stars
Idk, sometimes these things just don’t work out. Did you measure everything right?

  57. 5 stars
Absolutely love this pie! It’s my favorite dessert and this recipe is spot on! Can’t believe how simple it was to make!

  58. User avatar regan.ward88 says:

    3 stars
It was okay, but I found it a bit too sweet for my taste.

  59. 5 stars
    Yummmm!! 🤤

  60. User avatar berta.casper says:

    4 stars
This is not a real pie without ice cream! Who puts whipped cream only? Try adding some vanilla ice cream for a real treat!

  61. 3 stars
I only had low-fat milk, so it didn’t thicken as fast and I had to cook a little longer. Not bad though—just more like a thick pudding pie.

  62. 2 stars
Honestly, it tasted a bit too sweet for my liking. Next time, I’ll cut the sugar. 😕

  63. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    4 stars
Super easy to make! I skipped the whipped cream though, too sweet!

  64. User avatar vincenzo.oberbrunner says:

    1 star
Great recipe, but I substituted almond milk and it was a disaster. 😅

  65. User avatar raven.schultz11 says:

    3 stars
Why do we use egg yolks? I thought all you needed was chocolate and cream! 🤔

  66. User avatar holli.hudson2008 says:

    4 stars
I followed it exactly but mine got a little thick too fast before it really came to a boil. Still tasted good though, just more like chocolate custard filling.

    1. User avatar basementDweller says:

      4 stars
Oh no—sorry that happened! Chocolate custard going thick before a full boil is usually from heat running a bit high or the stirring slowing down. Next time try medium-low, whisk constantly (especially near the bottom/edges), and once it starts to thicken, keep it moving until it reaches that gentle boil called for. Even if it got thick early, I’m glad it still tasted good—chocolate custard filling sounds delicious.

  67. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    1 star
Why not just use instant pudding? seems like extra work

  68. User avatar monica.lubowitz27 says:

    5 stars
    So good!

  69. User avatar britney.haley1953 says:

    5 stars
This pie turned out amazing! So rich and chocolatey. My family loved it!

  70. User avatar vernell.ankunding says:

    3 stars
I used skim milk ’cause I was out of whole. It didn’t turn out as good, so maybe stick to whole milk!

  71. User avatar lino.kilback1957 says:

    2 stars
This says “gentle boil” and mine went full boil 😅 Now the texture is slightly grainy. Tastes okay, but I’m blaming the instructions.

  72. User avatar chang.towne30 says:

    1 star
Nah, not my type. Prefer fruity pies over this. Sorry!

    1. User avatar edison.hoeger42 says:

      5 stars
Chocolate is life! Fruity pies can’t beat the decadence of chocolate cream pie. Just saying!

    2. User avatar monte.sporer says:

      4 stars
I totally get it! Fruity pies are the bomb! But have you tried this one? It’s super rich and creamy.

  73. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

    5 stars
I don’t bake much but this recipe was easy to follow. I was proud of myself!

  74. User avatar Garthar says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was worried when it looked thin after step 2. But after the egg yolks step it started coming together. Still, I wish the instructions said “stir constantly” more emphatically the whole time.

    1. User avatar Ma'randru-jo says:

      3 stars
Mine never really thickened right, so I added more flour. Maybe my milk was too hot? Idk, but step 2 is kinda vague—medium heat can mean anything. Also, I chilled mine overnight and it was set, so maybe it just needs time.

    2. User avatar ashely.veum1952 says:

      5 stars
I had the exact same “thin at first” moment 😅. Once the yolks went in it totally thickened up. I do agree though—“stir constantly” should be louder the whole way, not just later.

  75. 2 stars
idk… seems like too much flour for only 3 tbsp cocoa? also 2 cups milk feels like a lot, mine came out thin at first. could be my fault though 😅

  76. User avatar marline.beatty says:

    5 stars
This pie was a hit at our family gathering! So chocolatey and delicious. Will definitely make again. 😍

  77. User avatar monserrate.donnelly says:

    2 stars
Too many steps, can’t you just buy a chocolate pie? Who’s got time for all this?

  78. 5 stars
The instructions are pretty clear, and the pudding part thickened nicely after boiling. I used dark cocoa and it turned out richer than I expected.

    1. User avatar doreatha.gerlach41 says:

      5 stars
Yes! I love when it thickens right after the boil—makes it feel like real pie filling and not “hot cocoa soup.” Dark cocoa is such a good move for extra richness.

    2. 4 stars
Mine did not thicken until I turned the heat up a bit, lol. I think my stove runs cold. Also I used regular cocoa and it still tasted great. 4 hours in the fridge was key.

  79. User avatar elias.kautzer11 says:

    5 stars
This is like a magic pie! I can’t believe I made it. Yass!

    1. User avatar aleisha.ledner51 says:

      5 stars
Wow, that’s awesome! I love how easy this recipe sounds. Can’t wait to try it myself!

  80. User avatar cody.will1 says:

    4 stars
The instructions are clear, but I had to whisk a little longer to get it truly smooth. After that, it thickened nicely and didn’t taste floury at all. Vanilla + cocoa combo is great.
