Brownies

May 28, 2024

Few desserts spark as much joy as a warm, fudgy brownie. With their crackly tops, rich chocolate flavor, and dense, chewy centers, brownies have become a beloved staple in kitchens everywhere. Whether you’re baking a batch for a party, a potluck, or just a quiet evening treat, brownies never feel out of place. They’re simple to make, endlessly adaptable, and always comforting.

What makes a perfect brownie is a matter of opinion. Some prefer them cakey and light, others dense and almost gooey. The beauty of brownies is that there’s room for every texture and flavor profile. Adding chocolate chips, swirls of peanut butter, or a handful of chopped walnuts can take a basic recipe to the next level. For the more adventurous, flavors like espresso, sea salt, or chili powder bring exciting depth to the classic.

Brownies also adapt well to different diets and preferences. There are vegan versions made with flax eggs, gluten-free varieties with almond flour, and even high-protein brownies made with black beans or protein powder. No matter the version, they tend to satisfy that universal craving for something rich, sweet, and chocolatey.

Another reason brownies are so loved is their shareable nature. A square pan can yield a dozen servings in minutes, making them ideal for school lunches, bake sales, or last-minute desserts. They travel well, store easily, and taste just as good (if not better) the next day.

Brownies also leave room for creativity. You can layer them with cheesecake, top them with frosting, or crumble them into ice cream. They’re an open invitation to play in the kitchen without fear of getting it wrong. And even when the edges get too crisp or the center turns out slightly underbaked, chances are they’ll still be devoured with a smile.

In a world full of fancy pastries and over-the-top confections, the humble brownie stands tall. It’s a reminder that comfort and indulgence can be found in the simplest of bakes.

I don’t know about 25 minutes—my toothpick came out with more than crumbs. I ended up adding 8 minutes and they finally set.

I followed it exactly but the batter was so thick I almost panicked. They still tasted good, but the center was a bit underbaked when I cut too soon—waiting to cool helped.

  4. User avatar jerrell.mann2004 says:

    5 stars
These came out super fudgy—exactly what I wanted. I used dark cocoa and it tasted like a bakery. The toothpick trick with moist crumbs is legit.

  5. User avatar pierre.macgyver says:

    5 stars
Made these last night and they’re dangerously good. The “moist crumbs” note is spot on—mine would’ve been dry if I baked longer.

  6. User avatar Saruman the White says:

    4 stars
Followed the recipe pretty closely. Texture was great, not cakey at all. Only thing: 1/4 tsp salt felt a bit high to me, so next time I’ll do a tiny pinch less.

  7. User avatar bernardo.auer86 says:

    5 stars
These brownies are the best! Super fudgy and delicious, my whole family loved them!

  8. User avatar eliseo.bernier1977 says:

To be honest, I thought brownies were just for kids, but I tried this recipe and wow! So good!

  9. User avatar derick.lemke says:

    5 stars
I was skeptical about the melted butter + lots of sugar, but wow. Very fudgy. Next time I’ll add an extra pinch of salt because I like it punchier.

  10. User avatar roosevelt.terry94 says:

    5 stars
These brownies are heavenly! So fudgy and chocolaty, I can’t get enough! 5 stars!

    1. User avatar Grìma Wormtongue says:

I agree! These brownies are the best! So rich and delicious! Can’t wait to make them again!

  11. User avatar basementDweller says:

    3 stars
Not bad but 2 cups of sugar sounds like a lot… I halved it next time and they were better for me. Chocolate chips were a nice touch.

  12. User avatar crocodile says:

    5 stars
These brownies came out super fudgy! I used dark cocoa and the chocolate chips really made a difference. Will make again for sure.

  13. User avatar steve_maga says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly, but mine were a bit too dense—like they needed more lift. Maybe I overmixed the flour? Still tasted good though.

    1. User avatar marilou.marks says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—if they’re coming out dense, it usually points to overmixing once the flour goes in (or mixing longer than “just combined”). Next time try folding the dry in gently and stop as soon as you don’t see dry streaks. Also, did you happen to bake a minute or two past 25? Even a little extra time can firm them up too much.

  14. 5 stars
Yum, yum, yum! I can’t wait to make these again. Love the chocolate chips!

  15. User avatar mitchell.hegmann20 says:

    4 stars
I cut them too soon and they crumbled (my fault). After fully cooling they held together better. Flavor is rich—def a keeper.

  16. User avatar roni.dickens41 says:

    2 stars
I tried making these, but they didn’t come out right. Maybe my oven is off?

  17. User avatar jonathan.mitchell2000 says:

    5 stars
Yum! I added peanut butter chips instead of walnuts. Best decision ever! 🍫🥳

    1. 2 stars
I dunno, man. Peanut butter chips? Seems like a weird substitute for walnuts. 🤨

    2. User avatar lanita.langworth57 says:

      5 stars
Peanut butter chips sound amazing! I might try that next time. Thanks for the tip! 😍

  18. 5 stars
These brownies are AMAZING! So fudgy and rich! 😋

  19. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

    2 stars
Kinda boring as written. Like… where’s the baking powder? Also my walnuts sank (maybe my fault, but still). Brownies taste okay though.

    1. User avatar gaston.cole says:

      4 stars
Yeah I get why you’d think that—this recipe is more like a fudgy brownie where the structure comes from eggs + flour, not baking powder. But if your walnuts sank, I’d guess they were too heavy/damp or you didn’t toss them in a little flour before folding.

  20. 5 stars
The walnuts make a difference. They add texture and keep you from eating the whole pan in one sitting. (Almost.)

  21. 3 stars
These brownies taste great, but I’m not a fan of walnuts. Next time I’ll skip them!

  22. 2 stars
Okay but why microwave the butter? I mean it worked, but it felt kinda risky. Also I accidentally added extra flour once and it didn’t forgive me 😅

  23. User avatar pasquale.bins says:

    4 stars
Yum!! 🍫 But walnuts are gross!!!

  24. User avatar reatha.schroeder7 says:

    3 stars
This was too sweet for my taste. Used less sugar and still too Much!

    1. User avatar serena.pacocha says:

      4 stars
I think the sugar is part of what makes brownies so tasty! Maybe try a different recipe next time? 😊

  25. User avatar jacki.klein says:

    5 stars
These brownies are ridiculously fudgy. I used dark cocoa and added extra chips—dangerously good.

  26. 4 stars
I’m not sure about the “toothpick with moist crumbs” part—mine looked underbaked after 25 minutes, but they set up after cooling. So… works, just stressful 😅

    1. User avatar Grìma Wormtongue says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I’ve had that exact thing happen—25 min always feels like it’s “too soon,” but they finish setting while cooling. That toothpick rule is basically dessert science 😅

    2. User avatar alexander.spencer says:

      4 stars
I always get worried with brownies… Mine never “sets” by toothpick time, so I bake longer like 30-35 min and it’s fine. But yours sounds right—moist crumbs after cooling still counts.

  27. User avatar avelina.kassulke51 says:

    2 stars
These use a lot of sugar. Isn’t that bad for health? I’m gonna try a low-sugar version next time.

  28. User avatar Laquanda Effertz III says:

    2 stars
I tried these but didn’t really turn out right. I think I added too many eggs, maybe?

  29. User avatar Blade Brothers says:

    1 star
Tried it once and they were raw in the middle. Oven temp was right but who knows—also I forgot to grease the pan and it stuck like crazy. 😅

  30. User avatar leanna.mraz40 says:

    2 stars
What kind of butter do I need? Unsalted or salted? Seems confusing.

    1. User avatar ela.zemlak says:

      5 stars
You should use unsalted butter for this recipe! It helps control the salt level. Salted butter might make it too salty.

  31. 1 star
Brownies don’t need eggs, right? They can be made with applesauce instead, I think.

  32. User avatar Wellington Yueh says:

    5 stars
Best brownies ever! I added some peanut butter to it and it was divine!!!

  33. 5 stars
    Brownies. Yum. Gonna make!

    1. User avatar Mr. Kelsi Spinka says:

      5 stars
Yesss! Brownies are the best! Can’t wait to hear how yours turn out!

  34. User avatar florida.bernhard2021 says:

    3 stars
The ingredient list is solid, but 4 eggs seems like a lot? I’m not sure what it changes—my batter was thick and hard to spread. Added a tiny bit more vanilla and it helped.

  35. User avatar syble.bernier2017 says:

    3 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but mine were a bit too sweet. Might reduce sugar by 1/4 cup next round or use dark chocolate chips.

    1. User avatar emelia.schamberger says:

      5 stars
Good call—4 cup sugar sounds like a lot, but if yours came out too sweet I’d try cutting it by 1/4 cup or swapping some chips for dark. Also, did you measure the cocoa/sugar by weight or cups? That can make a big difference.

  36. User avatar Caren Carroll says:

    5 stars
Chocolate chips + walnuts combo is elite. The smell while baking was unreal. I served them warm and everyone went back for seconds.

  37. User avatar kyle.windler68 says:

    4 stars
These are so easy to make! I made them for my kids and they loved them! 4 stars!

  38. 3 stars
I dunno, they turned out kinda dry for me. Maybe I overbaked them? But the flavor was alright.

  39. 2 stars
Meh. Tastes fine but my brownies are more chocolaty. Maybe I used dark cocoa powder? Also I forgot the walnuts so idk.

  40. User avatar risa.boyle12 says:

    3 stars
Tried this recipe, but my brownies came out dry. I think I baked them too long. 😔

  41. User avatar luciano.jakubowski says:

    4 stars
Why so much sugar? I used half and added some honey instead. Still good but a lil too sweet for my taste.

    1. User avatar rina.gibson86 says:

      4 stars
I agree, it has too much sugar! The honey is a good idea. Next time I might try it your way!

  42. User avatar lester.yundt46 says:

    2 stars
Not bad but honestly? I expected more chocolate flavor. Also my toothpick came out clean-ish and they still seemed wet. Confusing.

  43. User avatar Questular Rontok says:

    5 stars
How can something so simple be that good? Best recipe ever!!! 🥰

  44. User avatar columbus.fahey79 says:

    5 stars
Baking cha is fun! Love how easy this was. Gonna eat it all!

    1. 3 stars
Sounds good but I wonder if it’s too sweet with all that sugar? 🤔

    2. User avatar eboni.kuhlman1 says:

      5 stars
Yum! Brownies are the best! 🍫 Can’t wait to try your recipe!

  45. 2 stars
I don’t get why people love brownies so much. These were ok but nothing special.

  46. User avatar evon.bartell says:

    4 stars
The instructions are clear, but I wish it mentioned how to know when the butter/sugar is ready—mine looked grainy for a while.

  47. User avatar meaghan.gutmann says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, my batter looked weirdly thick before baking. I thought I messed up the flour, but it turned out fine—just needed the full cool time to cut clean.

  48. User avatar marion.mccullough95 says:

    2 stars
Is it really necessary to melt the butter? Can I just use it straight? 🤷‍♀️ 2 stars for confusion.

    1. User avatar joyce.mcdermott27 says:

      4 stars
Using straight butter might make the brownies greasy. I think melting it helps mix better! 4 stars for the question.

    2. User avatar nathan.abbott says:

      2 stars
Why can’t you just use it cold? Butter is butter! 😅 2 stars for assuming we can’t be lazy!

  49. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    3 stars
350°F for 25 minutes is very optimistic in my oven. The center was runny after 25, so I baked longer. Otherwise, easy recipe.

  50. 2 stars
The instructions are clear, but why melt butter in a microwave? I accidentally overheated it and the batter looked weird. Still saved it, barely.

  51. User avatar joette.wolf83 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have vanilla so I used almond extract—tasted kinda fancy, not gonna lie. Texture was fudgy and the chips stayed melty.

  52. User avatar eldon.labadie says:

    4 stars
Pretty good overall! I might reduce the sugar next time though; they’re a little sweet for me. Also, mine needed like 3-4 extra minutes to set.

  53. User avatar mark.beatty1993 says:

    3 stars
I like brownies, but I’m skeptical about melting butter in the microwave instead of using a double boiler. Mine turned out fine, yet I still feel like it could affect texture?

    1. User avatar lilly.welch54 says:

      3 stars
Wait—doesn’t microwave butter separate? I always do double boiler but maybe that’s just my anxiety 😅. How long did you heat it for?

    2. User avatar elijah.bailey61 says:

      5 stars
Honestly, microwave-melted butter works great for brownies as long as you don’t overheat it. I go for short bursts and stop as soon as it’s just melted—otherwise it can affect the fat structure a bit.

  54. User avatar elijah.mraz1985 says:

    3 stars
I feel like 25 minutes is a guess. My oven runs hot and I pulled them too late—kinda cakey. Flavor is solid though, and the butter/sugar mix smells amazing.

  55. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

    5 stars
OMG these are addictive! I made them for a potluck, and they were gone in minutes! Totally a 5 from me.

  56. 5 stars
    Sooo chocolatey. 10/10.

  57. User avatar santos.johns says:

    5 stars
Solid recipe—simple steps and it actually works. I was worried because the batter felt pretty thick, but once baked it was perfect. Will make again with extra chocolate chips.

    1. User avatar sol.johnston1953 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—mine looked too thick too, but it ended up fudgy and awesome. I also added a handful more chocolate chips and it was a win. Thanks for the clear timing!

    2. User avatar Miles Teg says:

      3 stars
Hmm I might be misunderstanding the thickness part… My batter stayed super stiff after mixing the sugar with melted butter, and I baked 30 min instead of 25—still kinda underdone. Maybe my eggs were small? Either way, flavor was good, but I’d tweak next time.

  58. User avatar aubrey.rogahn37 says:

    5 stars
These brownies turned out way better than I expected—fudgy in the middle and still chocolatey. The “toothpick with moist crumbs” tip is key. I skipped walnuts and it was still perfect.

  59. User avatar ulysses.ruecker says:

    1 star
Brownie recipe? Easy peasy! Took me forever to realize I forgot the chocolate chips lol.

  60. User avatar kenya.rutherford1963 says:

    5 stars
Yum! I added some peanut butter chips instead of walnuts and they turned out amazing!

  61. 5 stars
These brownies are incredible! So fudgy and rich, my family devoured them in minutes! ❤️

  62. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    5 stars
    1 word: Fudgy.

    1. User avatar samuel.murray61 says:

      5 stars
Yes! These brownies are totally fudgy—like dense and rich, not cakey at all.

    2. User avatar samella.watsica says:

      4 stars
Fudgy for sure, but I think 25 min is a gamble… mine came out a bit underdone the first time 😅

  63. User avatar rodger.damore45 says:

    5 stars
Best brownies ever!!! 😍 So fudgy and chocolatey. I didn’t add walnuts but they were still perfect!

  64. User avatar demarcus.auer12 says:

    4 stars
I used salted butter by mistake (oops), and they still tasted good—just slightly saltier. Vanilla amount felt right, and the crumb stayed fudgy after cooling.

  65. User avatar lupe.bergnaum says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly, but mine were a bit too sweet (probably because I used regular cocoa + full sugar). Still tasted good though, just not “deep chocolate” enough for my preference.

  66. 5 stars
These brownies came out super fudgy—exactly the kind I wanted. I used walnuts and the texture is perfect. 25 minutes was spot on for my oven.

  67. User avatar sean.denesik29 says:

    4 stars
Mine cracked on top and I thought I messed up, but they were delicious. Next time I’ll check at 22 minutes instead of 25 because my oven runs hot.

  68. User avatar kiana.hills41 says:

    4 stars
Pretty straightforward recipe. I had to bake like 30 minutes instead of 25 in my oven, but flavor was great and the crust on top was perfect.

  69. User avatar valarie.carter4 says:

    4 stars
I messed up the measurements but they still tasted good… kinda chewy though.

    1. User avatar janell.renner52 says:

      5 stars
Chewy is part of the charm! Sometimes the best dishes come from ‘mistakes’. Glad they still tasted good!

  70. User avatar marina.brown2008 says:

    1 star
I think I will stick to box brownies. This recipe seemed too complicated.

  71. 5 stars
These brownies are AMAZING! So fudgy and rich. I can’t get enough!

  72. 4 stars
Why microwave the butter? I whisk it over a double boiler like normal, and it always works better. That said, the end result here was rich.

  73. User avatar emmanuel.leuschke1985 says:

    4 stars
So delicious! But I think you forgot to mention how to store them. Do they need to be in the fridge?

  74. User avatar Shadowfax says:

    4 stars
I forgot the vanilla! What a bummer, they still taste good but I can’t imagine how amazing they would be with it.

  75. 5 stars
Yum! Chocolate chips really make it great! I added some caramel drizzle on top. 👏

  76. User avatar sean.weber91 says:

    4 stars
Really easy recipe. I was worried about the 25 minutes, but mine looked perfect at that time. Next time I’ll add a pinch more salt because I like the contrast.

    1. User avatar Super Saiyan Vegeta says:

      5 stars
I’m glad you said the 25 minutes works—mine usually takes longer for everything, so I was nervous. Adding a pinch more salt next time sounds spot on. Chocolate + salt is the way.

    2. User avatar dorethea.schimmel25 says:

      3 stars
Mine didn’t look “perfect” at 25 minutes 😅 I baked closer to 30 and they were still a bit fudgy. Also I’m confused—how much is 1 cup cocoa powder in grams? I used 60g like the recipe but maybe I packed it wrong.

  77. User avatar jonathon.hoppe65 says:

    5 stars
    Amazing!!!

    1. 5 stars
Right?? These brownies come out so fudgy and chocolatey 😍

  78. 5 stars
These brownies are dangerously good. Rich, fudgy center, and the chocolate chips/walnuts combo is spot on. I baked mine 2 minutes less than the time and they came out perfect.

  79. User avatar mel.welch says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about melting butter in the microwave instead of doing it gently on the stove. But honestly it still worked—fewer dishes too.

    1. 5 stars
Same here—was totally worried the microwave would make the butter greasy or split, but the brownies came out great. Less cleanup is a win.

    2. User avatar Dremora Lord says:

      3 stars
I still think stovetop is safer, like you can control the heat better. Microwave butter sometimes overheats and then your sugar tastes weird?? But if it worked for you I guess 🤷‍♂️

  80. 2 stars
I found the recipe quite confusing… what do you mean by ‘spreading evenly’? I just dumped it in the pan.

    1. User avatar Golden Chief Cylos says:

      3 stars
I don’t get what the big deal is with spreading. I just dumped it and they came out fine! Why is everyone so picky?

    2. User avatar Gormlaith says:

      4 stars
Spreading evenly is just about making sure the batter is flat in the pan! I used a spatula for that. It helps them bake nice, trust me!

  81. User avatar rod.christiansen says:

    2 stars
Way too sweet for me. I also found melting the butter in microwave made it separate a little—next time I’ll melt gently on low.

  82. User avatar lila.hermann says:

    3 stars
Followed the recipe pretty closely, but mine came out a little too sweet and the center was gooey like it wasn’t done (even after 25 mins). Could be my oven runs hot? Still tasted great.

    1. User avatar gary.ferry91 says:

      4 stars
That sounds exactly like an oven-temp or bake-time issue. If the center was gooey after 25 mins, try baking 5–10 minutes more next time—or check with a toothpick: you want moist crumbs, not wet batter.

  83. User avatar Oolon Colluphid says:

    5 stars
These brownies are AMAZING! I followed the recipe exactly, and they turned out perfect. Thank you!

  84. User avatar nicol.bogisich26 says:

    3 stars
I had a bit of trouble with the baking time. Mine ended up a little too dry. Will try again.

  85. User avatar Flor Vandervort says:

    4 stars
Who needs walnuts? Chocolate chips are enough! I love this recipe as is!

    1. User avatar Super Saiyan Gohan says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Chocolate chips make everything better. Walnuts just get in the way! 🍫

  86. User avatar tyron.heidenreich says:

    1 star
Too much sugar, I think! My teeth hurt just lookin at the recipe. Not making again. 1 star.

  87. User avatar theola.homenick90 says:

    2 stars
Too much sugar for my taste. Also 9×9 pan—mine was slightly smaller so they came out thicker. Not awful, just very sweet and dense.

  88. User avatar lauren.dooley says:

    5 stars
These brownies are delicious! I made them for a party and everyone loved them. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

      2 stars
I don’t think they can be that good. I tried a similar recipe and they burnt. 🤔

    2. User avatar Isaac Mann says:

      5 stars
Yum! Brownies are the best. I’m glad everyone loved them! What kind of chocolate chips did you use?

  89. User avatar vicente.bosco67 says:

    2 stars
Not convinced. Melted butter + sugar is nice, but 1 cup cocoa powder seems like a lot?? Mine tasted a bit dry and the top cracked. Could be my cocoa though.

  90. 4 stars
Brownies are just cookies without the shape! Haha, maybe next time just make cookies.

  91. User avatar Goku Black says:

    4 stars
Does anyone know if I can use gluten-free flour? My friend is celiac. Need to make these for her!

  92. User avatar elsy.huels says:

I don’t like nuts in my brownies, so I just skipped the walnuts. Still turned out yum!

  93. User avatar jeanine.christiansen17 says:

Not gonna lie, 4 eggs felt like a lot, but it gave that chewy brownie vibe. Also, 9×9 is the way—smaller pan = thicker brownies.

I used dark cocoa powder and it came out a little too bitter for my taste. Might be user error, but I think 3/4 cup cocoa is a lot if you’re not sweet-toothed. Still ate them though.

    1. 5 stars
Oof yeah 3/4 cup cocoa can be pretty intense. I’d try cutting it to 1/2 cup next time (or use a sweeter cocoa blend). Glad you still ate them though!

  95. User avatar lindsay.armstrong11 says:

    4 stars
Yummy! But does anyone else think the walnuts make them taste weird? 🤔 I prefer them without.

  96. User avatar ty.nader82 says:

    4 stars
Not bad! I used dark cocoa and it was a little more intense than I thought, but still good. Next time I’d maybe bake 2-3 minutes less because mine were slightly more set than fudgy.

    1. 5 stars
That makes sense about the dark cocoa—mine get richer too. Reducing by 2-3 minutes is a great call if they turn out more set than fudgy.

  97. User avatar carmine.fahey1972 says:

    3 stars
I found the batter too thick… is it supposed to be like that? Not sure if I did it right.

  98. User avatar wilmer.conroy33 says:

    3 stars
I didn’t have cocoa powder, so I used chocolate syrup instead. 🤪 They came out all gooey and messy but still good! 3 stars.

  99. 3 stars
I found these a bit too sweet for my taste. Maybe less sugar next time?

  100. User avatar weldon.cummerata says:

    4 stars
Nice simple recipe, but 4 eggs + 2 cups sugar felt like a lot. I reduced sugar by 1/4 cup and they were still rich.

  101. User avatar cedric.zemlak1958 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and they sank a little in the middle. Not sure if it was my pan size or I underbaked. Still tasted like chocolate heaven.

  102. User avatar kristopher.hills47 says:

    3 stars
Honestly, I made these and they came out too sweet for my taste. I’ll try using less sugar next time.

  103. 2 stars
Can someone tell me what unsalted butter is? I just used regular butter. Did I mess up? 2 stars.

  104. 2 stars
These brownies are alright, but not as good as my grandma’s. She had a secret ingredient. LOL.

    1. 4 stars
Grandma’s secret ingredient? That’s the key! Maybe some cinnamon or a sprinkle of salt? Just trying to help! 😊

  105. 4 stars
The cocoa + flour ratio feels spot on. I didn’t have walnuts, still tasted awesome with just chocolate chips.

    1. User avatar sherril.quitzon says:

      5 stars
Yes! I love when the cocoa-to-flour balance actually delivers. I also usually skip walnuts and just go heavy on chocolate chips—still super fudgy. Thanks for confirming it works!

  106. User avatar jewell.hintz33 says:

    5 stars
These brownies are the best I’ve ever made! So gooey and chocolatey! 😍

    1. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      3 stars
Best brownies? Really? I’ve had better ones at the bakery down the street. 🤔

    2. User avatar freddie.kohler2 says:

      5 stars
I tried making these last weekend and they turned out amazing too! Thanks for sharing the recipe! 🍫

  107. User avatar lynell.cormier says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but the texture was kinda cakey. I might’ve overmixed the dry into wet. The walnuts were a nice touch though.

    1. User avatar tyler.mcdermott97 says:

      5 stars
That makes sense—overmixing the dry into the wet can definitely make brownies go cakey. Next time, I’d mix just until you don’t see streaks of flour (like 15–20 stirs max). Glad the walnuts still worked out though!

    2. User avatar kristin.haley1996 says:

      3 stars
Hmm, I’ve had cakey happen when I bake them a minute too long 😅 I’d try pulling them when they still look slightly underdone. Also, are you sure you used enough cocoa? Mine turned out best when I sifted the dry mix.

  108. 2 stars
I’m skeptical about the cook time—25 minutes for a 9×9 feels short. I checked at 20 and they weren’t set, so I added 10 more.

    1. User avatar kurt.morar51 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, I feel the same. For a 9×9, 25 min can be super optimistic—especially if your oven runs cool or the batter is a bit thicker. I always start checking around 20 too.

  109. User avatar trevor.funk says:

Super easy instructions, and the melted butter + sugar combo smells amazing. Next time I’ll add a pinch more salt because I like that chocolate pop.

    1. User avatar suzanne.rowe7 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—those melted butter + sugar instructions are the sweet spot. I’ll try the extra pinch of salt next time too; I love that little chocolate “pop.”

  110. User avatar lowell.satterfield55 says:

    4 stars
Pretty easy and not too sweet like some box mixes. I baked mine maybe 28 minutes because my oven runs hot, but still turned out great.

    1. User avatar Mrs. Curtis Hodkiewicz says:

      5 stars
Nice! 28 minutes makes sense if your oven runs hot—those brownies are definitely forgiving if you watch for the moist crumbs. Glad they stayed not-too-sweet!

  111. User avatar tania.shanahan24 says:

    5 stars
Followed it exactly and they turned out great. Mine needed like 27 minutes though—oven temps are always a lie.

  112. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    3 stars
Just ok. Kinda dry for my taste. Might have overbaked it.

  113. User avatar julene.bednar16 says:

    2 stars
Not bad, but I found the texture more like a dense cake than brownies brownies. Maybe I overmixed the dry into the wet.

  114. User avatar truman.brekke79 says:

    2 stars
350°F for 25 minutes?? That feels too short. Like I don’t know why people trust toothpicks. Mine came out kind of gooey and I panicked. Maybe I sliced too early.

    1. User avatar steve_maga says:

      5 stars
I totally get the “too short” feeling—25 min sounds like it should be underbaked. But for brownies, 350°F usually *is* about right for that “moist crumbs” stage. If yours were gooey, it might be because your toothpick came out with wet batter instead of just sticky crumbs.

  115. User avatar Ford Prefect says:

    5 stars
These brownies turned out fudgy and not cakey at all—exactly what I wanted. I baked 2–3 minutes less and they were perfect.

  116. User avatar masako.beahan84 says:

    4 stars
I followed it closely and they’re good, but a little too sweet for me. Also mine set a bit more than I expected—maybe my oven runs hot? Still, will make again.

    1. User avatar daniella.pfannerstill74 says:

      5 stars
Glad you liked them! If they seem too sweet, I’d try reducing the sugar by like 1/4 cup next time or use bittersweet chips instead of semi-sweet.

  117. 3 stars
Mine turned out a bit too sweet for my taste—next time I’ll cut the sugar slightly or use dark cocoa. Texture was still good though.

    1. User avatar erwin.tremblay says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—2 cups of sugar can make these skew sweet. I’ve started using a little less sugar (like 1 1/2 cups) and it’s night and day. Dark cocoa also helps a lot, and sometimes I even add an extra pinch of salt to balance it.

  118. User avatar mel.becker1953 says:

    5 stars
Best brownies ever! I added peanut butter chips instead of walnuts and it was fantastic! 👍 5/5

  119. User avatar Russel Hermiston says:

    2 stars
Just ok. Too much sugar for my taste. What if I cut it in half? 🤔

    1. User avatar marisela.schoen2003 says:

      4 stars
Cutting the sugar sounds like a good idea! You might end up with a richer chocolate flavor. Give it a try!

  120. User avatar Gag Halfrunt says:

    2 stars
I tried this and they were great day-of, but the next day they firmed up too much for my taste. Maybe I cooled them too long.

  121. User avatar kassie.kuhn14 says:

    3 stars
I dunno, they turned out kinda dry for me. Maybe I overcooked them? 🤔 3/5

    1. User avatar iliana.ullrich says:

      2 stars
Dry brownies…unheard of! Must be a mistake in the recipe or you just stirred too much. 🤷‍♂️

    2. 4 stars
I think it might be the baking time. I always check them at 20 minutes, just in case! They stay moist that way. 😊

  122. 2 stars
Why microwave the butter? I feel like it changes the flavor?? I used stovetop instead and it was fine. Texture was okay, but not “wow” for me.

  123. User avatar Kelley Shanahan DDS says:

    3 stars
I tried walnuts and they overpowered the chocolate a bit. Also, I accidentally forgot vanilla at first (realized halfway 😩) so I had to correct it. Still good, but not my best batch.

  124. 3 stars
Not bad, but 2 cups sugar felt like a lot to me. I might cut it next time. Also I totally forgot the walnuts lol—still good though.

  125. User avatar mitchel.kuhn says:

Worst instructions. “Pour batter into a greased dish” like I know what thickness—also my eggs got weird when I added them too fast. I added more flour and they turned out edible. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    1. User avatar Arnita Jacobs IV says:

      4 stars
Yeah that’s super vague—“greased dish” and no thickness or spread instructions is why people run into problems. Your fix with extra flour is honestly relatable 😅

  126. User avatar Frost Troll says:

    5 stars
These brownies came out fudgy and rich—perfect cocoa flavor. I used walnuts and the texture is awesome. I’ll make these again for sure!

  127. User avatar ashly.tillman says:

    5 stars
I love how simple this is—melt butter, mix, bake. My kids devoured them. The moist-crumb toothpick test is legit.

  128. User avatar Clair Kuphal says:

    1 star
Nope. Too sweet and the texture was weird for me—like chewy but not fudgy. I followed the steps though, so I don’t get it. Maybe my eggs were off?

    1. User avatar meridith.stracke says:

      4 stars
That texture description (chewy but not fudgy) sounds like they may have been slightly overbaked or mixed a bit too much once the flour went in. I’d try pulling them when the toothpick has *moist* crumbs and not “clean,” and bake 22–24 min in your oven.

    2. User avatar Meriadoc Brandybuck says:

      3 stars
Could be the eggs, yeah. If they were really small or old, the batter can behave weird. Also did you measure cocoa/flour by weight? 3/4 cup cocoa is easy to pack and make it drier/sweeter.

  129. User avatar shayne.nitzsche41 says:

    5 stars
The instruction “toothpick with moist crumbs” is the real MVP. I used it and got a nice gooey center instead of cakey brownies. Great guidance.

    1. 4 stars
Wait… I always thought toothpick should come out clean? 😅 I tried “a few moist crumbs” once and it was fudgier but I was scared it was underbaked. Still, I’ll take it.

    2. User avatar Lunkwill and Fook says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That “moist crumbs” line is exactly what saves brownies from turning into cake bricks. I always start checking a couple minutes early now.

  130. User avatar terra.kirlin says:

Soooo good. Like, no notes. 😅
