Baked Tilapia

February 19, 2025

Baked tilapia is a light and healthy seafood dish that’s incredibly easy to prepare while offering great flavor. Known for its mild taste and flaky texture, tilapia is a versatile fish that pairs well with various seasonings and sides, making it a perfect choice for a quick weeknight dinner or a lighter meal. Whether you’re a seafood lover or just looking for a simple protein, baked tilapia is a dish that’s both delicious and nutritious.

To make baked tilapia, start by choosing fresh or frozen tilapia fillets. The key to a great baked tilapia is in the seasoning. A simple combination of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and pepper is all you need to bring out the fish’s natural flavor. You can also add fresh herbs like parsley, thyme, or dill to enhance the taste, or even sprinkle a bit of paprika or cayenne pepper for a subtle kick. For added depth, a light drizzle of melted butter works wonders.

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare a baking dish by lightly greasing it or lining it with parchment paper. Place the seasoned tilapia fillets in the dish, ensuring they are spaced out evenly for even cooking. Bake the fish for 12-15 minutes, or until it flakes easily with a fork. The result is perfectly cooked, tender tilapia that retains moisture and flavor.

Baked tilapia is incredibly versatile and can be served with a variety of side dishes. Pair it with steamed vegetables, roasted potatoes, or a fresh salad for a light and healthy meal. You can also serve it over rice or quinoa for a more filling dish. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice on top right before serving adds brightness and enhances the flavors even more.

This simple baked tilapia is a go-to recipe for anyone looking for a quick, healthy, and flavorful dinner that’s easy to make and sure to please.

Tilapia can be a healthy choice if sourced properly! It’s low in calories and good for protein. Just be mindful of where it comes from.

I don’t know about that. I heard that tilapia isn’t as nutritious as other fish like salmon. Is any fish actually healthy??

I followed it exactly and it turned out okay, but the seasoning seemed heavy on the paprika for me. Like, I could taste it a LOT. Still edible and fast.

    1. User avatar arnoldo.stamm says:

      4 stars
Yeah, smoked paprika can hit way harder than expected. Next time I’d cut it to like 1/2 tsp or mix it with a little extra pepper/garlic so it’s more balanced. Still, 20 minutes is a win.

I used lime instead of lemon and the taste was awesome! Change it up!

  31. User avatar aurora.kulas says:

Made this tonight and it was honestly so simple. The paprika + lemon combo tastes way more “restaurant” than I expected. Mine took like 18 minutes but that might be my oven—perfect flake test though!

    1. User avatar jean.von7 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That paprika + lemon combo seriously sounds way fancier than it is. I’ve made similar flavors on chicken and it always hits. Glad you nailed the flake test too 🙌

    2. User avatar zackary.mcclure says:

      4 stars
18 min seems believable—my oven runs hot too. I’m surprised it’s only tilapia and spices though; does it come out kinda dry for you? I might try covering with foil first.

  39. User avatar shakia.bashirian98 says:

    5 stars
So easy! I made this for my kids and they cleaned their plates. A miracle!

    1. User avatar gregory.balistreri says:

      3 stars
Miracle? More like a regular fish dish. I dunno, kids usually don’t like fish… was it really that good?

    2. User avatar steve_maga says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome to hear! Kids can be picky, so I’m glad this recipe worked out for you. I’m definitely trying it next week!

  40. User avatar joshua.okuneva1962 says:

    5 stars
This is such an easy weeknight dinner. I served it with rice and roasted broccoli and it was restaurant-level. Olive oil drizzle = everything.

  41. 2 stars
Too much garlic powder for my taste. I prefer it simpler.

    1. 3 stars
I love garlic! The more, the better! But everyone has their own taste, I guess.

    2. User avatar ranae.ondricka says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean, garlic can be overpowering! Maybe just use half a teaspoon next time?

  42. 2 stars
Followed the recipe but overcooked it. Oops! Still edible tho.

    1. User avatar joe_banana says:

      4 stars
Hey, it happens to the best of us! At least you were able to salvage it. What sides did you serve it with?

  43. User avatar lawrence.frami1985 says:

    4 stars
Baked tilapia is always a hit! I added some herbs from my garden and it was divine!

    1. 5 stars
That sounds amazing! I love using fresh herbs too. What kind did you add?

  44. 4 stars
Baking fish? Really? I thought I’d have to fry it for it to taste good! But this was actually decent.

    1. User avatar Treebeard says:

      5 stars
Baking fish is the best! It’s healthier than frying and tastes great too! I’m glad you tried it.

  45. User avatar allan.lockman56 says:

Found this recipe on Pinterest. Glad I tried it!

  46. User avatar kirk.gottlieb2000 says:

    5 stars
This is the easiest “real dinner” recipe I’ve found. No complicated steps, just toss on seasonings and bake. My picky kid ate it without complaining (rare!).

  47. User avatar ozella.hammes77 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical at first. Tilapia fish? Really? But wow, adding lemon juice made it less fishy. Good one!

  48. User avatar carli.mayert31 says:

    5 stars
Yum! Perfectly flaky, I never thought cooking fish could be this simple.

  49. User avatar marguerite.auer87 says:

    2 stars
I forgot to preheat the oven (my bad). It still cooked through, but the texture was less “flaky” and more just… firm. Lesson learned: preheat means preheat.

  50. User avatar erasmo.cummings1971 says:

    2 stars
I’m skeptical about baking fish with just oil + spices. It felt too simple. Also, 0.5 tsp salt for 4 fillets seems like basically nothing, so mine was under-seasoned.

  51. User avatar joesph.huels62 says:

    2 stars
Meh. Fish is fish. My dog loved it tho. Better than the kibble, I guess. Also, did I use garlic powder?

  52. 5 stars
Made this tonight and it was super flavorful without being complicated. The smoked paprika really came through. Mine needed like 23 minutes since the fillets were thick, but it turned out perfect.

  53. User avatar Android 18 says:

    3 stars
400°F for 20 minutes is too much for my thin fillets—mine dried out a bit. I’d recommend checking at 12–15 min.

    1. User avatar allen.ritchie says:

      4 stars
Hmm I always do 400°F 20 min and it comes out fine for me, but maybe depends how thick the fillets are. Next time I’ll try 15 mins.

    2. User avatar Sabre Cat says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—tilapia is so lean. I’d start checking early and pull it as soon as it flakes. Dry fish is the worst.

  54. User avatar Stockwell says:

    1 star
Tasteless! I don’t know what the hype is about tilapia, this was bland. Need to add more spices.

  55. User avatar Michael83 says:

    4 stars
Super easy! I threw in some extra spices. My kids loved it! 💕

  56. User avatar Dr. Tomas Price says:

Does tilapia have bones? I hate fish with bones, scared to try. Can someone tell me?

    1. User avatar byron.grady25 says:

      3 stars
I think there might be some small bones sometimes? Just be careful. Maybe try salmon instead?

    2. User avatar arden.boehm says:

      5 stars
Yes, tilapia fillets are usually boneless. They’re pretty easy to eat! You should give it a try!

  57. User avatar Galadriel says:

    5 stars
This recipe is fantastic! The tilapia turned out so tasty and flaky. Definitely a keeper!

  58. User avatar gerardo.stroman1967 says:

Isn’t tilapia a bad fish? Heard bad things about it.

    1. User avatar Mr. Popo says:

      5 stars
Who cares? Looks yummy! Going to try this recipe anyway!

    2. 4 stars
I’ve heard that too, but tilapia can be fine if sourced properly. Try to buy wild-caught if possible!

  59. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    3 stars
I followed every step but mine was overcooked. Maybe my oven runs hot?

    1. User avatar kristina.sipes23 says:

      4 stars
Maybe try reducing the baking time by a few minutes? I’ve had success doing that when my oven runs hot too.

    2. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

      2 stars
Overcooked? I never had that prob with this recipe. R u sure u set the temp right? 🤔

  60. User avatar Granville Mills says:

    2 stars
Mine came out super dry. What did I do wrong?

  61. User avatar mel.littel59 says:

    4 stars
I wasn’t a fan of tilapia before, but this was surprisingly good! The garlic and lemon really make a difference.

  62. User avatar berry.torphy71 says:

    3 stars
Too much lemon for my taste, next time I’ll use less. But overall it’s decent.

  63. User avatar meghann.zemlak14 says:

Delicious! My husband ate two servings. Who knew he liked fish!

  64. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

    5 stars

  65. 4 stars
I substituted tilapia with salmon because that’s what I had, and it turned out great! 👌🏻

  66. User avatar silas.corkery1975 says:

    3 stars
Baked? Should just fry it! More flavor that way, trust me. My grandma always said frying is the best.

  67. User avatar contessa.prohaska says:

    3 stars
Okay not gonna lie, my tilapia came out a tiny bit dry. I think my fillets were thicker than average. Still good though—juicy in the middle once we flaked it.

    1. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      5 stars
Oof, thicker fillets will definitely dry out—20 minutes can be perfect for thin ones but too long for chunkier cuts. Next time try adding 2–5 minutes less and check at the 15-minute mark, or bake until it just flakes.

  68. User avatar terrance.conn says:

    3 stars
I followed exactly. It tasted fine but kinda bland for me personally. I even double-checked the salt/pepper. Maybe my paprika is weak?

  69. User avatar Elsa D'Amore V says:

    4 stars
This is the kind of meal I can do on a busy weeknight. Also, tilapia is kinda cheap here so it doesn’t hurt the budget. Simple and tasty!

  70. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    5 stars
Yum! I added some chili flakes for an extra kick. Will make again!

  71. User avatar edgar.sipes19 says:

    5 stars
My kids ate this without fuss, so I’m calling it a win!

  72. 3 stars
Not bad at all, but mine came out a little dry. I think my fillets were thinner, so 20 minutes was probably too long. I’ll reduce time next go-round.

  73. User avatar clorinda.larkin24 says:

    4 stars
Can confirm this works—thawed tilapia, 20 minutes, flaked easily. Olive oil + paprika combo is legit.

    1. 5 stars
Nice—20 minutes really does nail it. I’ve been doing this exact paprika + olive oil combo too and it comes out so flaky.

  74. 3 stars
Easy to make, but I found it a bit bland. Needs something more.

  75. User avatar andres.bruen93 says:

    5 stars
Used frozen tilapia and it still turned out great! Didn’t have paprika, used cayenne instead. Just wow!

  76. 4 stars
Really simple and quick. Perfect weeknight dinner!

  77. 5 stars
Smelled amazing while baking! Tasted great, too.

  78. User avatar teena.schmitt74 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about baking tilapia without any breading—usually it gets bland. But wow, the lemon + paprika combo really works. Will keep this recipe in rotation.

  79. User avatar karin.bergnaum22 says:

    4 stars
Thought it was gonna taste bland. Was surprised at how yummy it was! 👌

  80. User avatar Jerilyn Toy DVM says:

This is the easiest fish recipe I’ve tried. Cleanup was quick, and the fish flakes so nicely. I served it with rice and roasted broccoli—restaurant vibes!

    1. User avatar Nakita Walsh says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—20 minutes and it’s done! The lemon + smoked paprika combo is so good. I did a quick garlic butter drizzle after baking and it still cleaned up easy 😄

    2. User avatar halflife4 says:

      4 stars
I tried this but mine didn’t flake that nicely at 20 min… maybe my fillets were thicker. I ended up adding like 8 more minutes. Still tasty though, not gonna lie. Also I used regular paprika and it was fine.

  81. User avatar irmgard.gleichner36 says:

    5 stars
Wow! The lemon zest makes the whole thing smell amazing while it bakes. I served it with rice and roasted broccoli and everyone went back for seconds.

  82. User avatar rick.donnelly74 says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it came out super flaky! The smoked paprika is legit—makes it taste a lot fancier than it is. I added a little chopped parsley at the end and would absolutely do again.

    1. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

      3 stars
I’m glad yours turned out flaky. Mine was kind of dry (maybe I baked it too long?). Next time I’ll watch the time closer and use fresh lemon zest—smoked paprika sounds great though.

    2. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Love hearing this—smoked paprika really does make it taste restaurant-y. Parsley at the end is a perfect finishing move.

This recipe is super easy! My family loved it!!!

  84. User avatar awilda.buckridge83 says:

  87. User avatar erasmo.lakin says:

    4 stars
so easy to make! We loved it. olive oil > butter any day! 👍

  88. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    4 stars
Pretty easy and flavorful. I used thawed tilapia and it still cooked perfectly in 20 minutes. Next time I might bump the garlic powder slightly because I like more punch.

  89. 4 stars
Would’ve been a 5 but I accidentally used regular pepper (not freshly ground). Also, 400°F seems high? My oven runs hot though. Still turned out good.

    1. User avatar refugio.koepp says:

      5 stars
Honestly 400°F isn’t crazy for tilapia—it’s a pretty delicate fish, so 20 minutes is usually spot on. I’ve got the same issue with pepper; still tastes great though!

    2. 4 stars
I get it—400 seems high to me too, but tilapia cooks fast. If your oven runs hot, maybe start checking around 15 min so it doesn’t dry out. Regular pepper should be fine.

  90. 5 stars
Baked it for 20 minutes and it was perfec!!! ❤️

  91. 4 stars
Had to make some adjustments, couldn’t find lemon zest. Used a whole lemon and it turned out fine! 🙂

  92. User avatar myrtie.kautzer69 says:

    5 stars
Super simple but SO GOOD! Will make again for sure. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  93. User avatar reynaldo.hand says:

    3 stars

  94. User avatar sonya.kerluke24 says:

I’ve never cooked fish before and I didn’t know what to expect. It was kinda bland to me… but I guess that’s fish for ya?

Smell in the kitchen was AMAZING. I served it with rice and roasted broccoli and it was restaurant-level.

Tilapia is really fishy, I don’t like it that much. I prefer salmon more!

I don’t like tilapia, but this recipe was easy and it didn’t stink up the house! Not my fave, though.

Pretty good but I thought the tilapia could use more seasoning. Maybe I’ll add some lemon pepper next time.

I totally agree! A bit more seasoning would elevate it for sure. Lemon pepper sounds like a great idea!

I forgot to preheat the oven, and it took longer to cook. Still turned out fine. 😂

Haha, I’ve done that before too! The fish still tastes great regardless. Glad it turned out fine! 😊

But… how could you forget to preheat? 😳 I would be too nervous about it cooking right.

This was bland for me. I followed the recipe exactly and didn’t get much lemon flavor—maybe my lemon zest was weak? Idk, fish was still tasty but needed more seasoning.

Hmm that’s frustrating. If you used pre-ground lemon juice or the zest was from a less fragrant lemon, it can totally come out muted. I usually do a bit more zest (like 1–2 tbsp) and bump the pepper/salt right before baking.

What even is tilapia? Is it like a catfish? 🤔

I accidentally used regular paprika instead of smoked and it tasted kinda flat. Still ate it all, but I’d definitely get the smoked version. The lemon zest is key.

Looks too plain to me. Fish with no sauce? Nah, I think I’ll pass. Sorry!

I get you, but sometimes simple is best! A squeeze of lemon after baking can really brighten it up. Just try it, you might be surprised!

Not bad but mine was a little dry. I think my fillets were thicker than expected, so 20 minutes wasn’t enough (or I overbaked by a minute or two, idk). Flavor was good though.

Dry fish is the worst. 20 min is kinda aggressive if your pieces were bigger. Next time try checking at 15 min and maybe cover it with foil for the first half of baking.

Yeah that tracks—thicker fillets definitely need more time. I usually go closer to 22–28 min depending on thickness, and I pull it as soon as it flakes (not one minute later 😅).

Made this tonight—super fast and smelled amazing. The paprika + lemon combo is perfect. Mine needed like 2-3 extra minutes to flake fully, but otherwise spot on.
